ABOUNDING IN GOOD WORKS
The teaching series that was initiated some time ago, the Abundance Blueprint, is being continued. As we gradually progress through the Abundant Blueprint, the focus this morning is on the subject of abounding in good works. This is based on the reading from Second Corinthians chapter 9, verse No. 8. The message is to encourage everyone to believe that in December, they will abound in good works, as it is the will of God for them. The emphasis is on personalizing this belief and declaring it together, both online and in the room.
The second reading comes from first Timothy chapter 6, verses 17, 18, and 19. The approach to reading this passage is as if a pastor has received an instruction from God or an authority figure and is relaying it to the congregation. This is similar to how Paul was writing to Timothy, his younger prodigy, giving him admiration and instruction about what to say to the members of his church. The reading is from the New Living Translation, and the message is to convey the importance of the instructions to the congregation.
The emphasis is on the personalization of the message and the declaration of faith in the abundance of good works. The readings from Second Corinthians and first Timothy are meant to inspire and encourage everyone to believe in the abundance of good works and to declare it together. The approach to reading the passages is to convey the authority and importance of the message, as if it is a direct instruction from God or an authority figure, to be taken seriously and applied in the lives of the congregation.
The passage from the New Living Translation emphasizes the importance of teaching those who are wealthy not to be prideful and to place their trust in God rather than in their riches. It is a reminder that material wealth is temporary and unreliable, while God provides everything we need for our enjoyment. The message is clear – use your wealth to do good, be generous to those in need, and always be ready to share with others. This is a call to live a life rich in good works, storing up treasures for the future and experiencing true life through acts of kindness and generosity.
The Apostle Paul’s instructions to Pastor Timothy in the book of 1 Timothy highlight the significance of living a life filled with good works. By being generous, sharing with others, and using wealth to do good, individuals can lay a solid foundation for the future and truly experience the richness of life. The concept of abundance is not just about material wealth, but about the abundance of good works that one can do to make a positive impact on the world around them. It is a reminder that true fulfillment comes from giving back and helping those in need.
The teachings of Paul in both 1 Timothy and 2 Corinthians emphasize the importance of living a life of abundance through good works and generosity. By following these instructions, individuals can experience true life and fulfillment. The message is clear – wealth should be used to benefit others, to be generous to those in need, and to store up treasures through acts of kindness and compassion. Living a life rich in good works is the key to experiencing true abundance and fulfillment according to the teachings of the Apostle Paul.
We have explored various ways in which abundance can manifest in our lives, including our interactions and activities online. Last Sunday, we hosted a discussion featuring individuals who have achieved a certain level of wealth through the application of biblical principles. Our intention in doing so was not to instill a desire for abundance for its own sake. We firmly believe that without a clear purpose, the pursuit of abundance can lead to misuse and exploitation. Instead, we seek to emphasize that the purpose of abundance, whether it be wealth or influence, is rooted in the concept of equality. God desires to establish an ecosystem where everyone has access to a minimum level of resources, thereby promoting a sense of equality and well-being for all.
The mindset that drives this pursuit of abundance is one of generosity, rooted in the values of the kingdom. Proverbs 11:24 highlights the importance of generosity, stating that those who are generous will see an increase, while those who withhold unnecessarily will experience lack. The message translation of this verse underscores the significance of generosity, emphasizing that the world of the generous expands, while the world of the stingy contracts. Therefore, the true purpose of abundance, as ordained by God, is to foster a spirit of generosity. It is this generosity that ensures that abundance is not mismanaged or abused, but rather used for the betterment of all.
As we continue to place our trust in God for abundance, we urge you to shift your focus away from self-centered desires and towards a mindset of generosity. By doing so, we can work towards securing our future, recognizing that ultimate security lies in the hands of God. It is through God’s provision and our commitment to generosity that we can ensure a future that is not only secure for ourselves, but also for those around us. Therefore, let us embrace the purpose of abundance, which is to promote equality and generosity, and in doing so, prevent any potential misuse or abuse of the blessings that God bestows upon us.
It is essential to understand that no matter how much wealth one accumulates, it cannot ensure eternal life or even a long life. Ultimately, it is believed that God, especially if one has a covenant with Him, is the one who orchestrates everything in life. Therefore, the pursuit of material possessions and personal desires should not be the sole focus. Instead, individuals should question themselves if they can use the abundance they have been blessed with to worship God and fulfill His will. By shifting the focus from self-centered survival to a broader perspective that encompasses the needs of others, one can identify opportunities to engage in acts of kindness and generosity.
Delving deeper into the concept of good works, it is evident that those who are solely preoccupied with their own survival and basic needs often overlook the chances to contribute positively to the world around them. By being overly fixated on personal concerns, individuals may miss out on the joy and fulfillment that come from helping others and making a difference in their communities. It is crucial to recognize that the ability to engage in acts of kindness and generosity does not depend on having an abundance of resources. Instead, it is about starting from where one currently stands and utilizing whatever means are available to make a positive impact.
Many people tend to postpone practicing values such as generosity and compassion, believing that they will do so once they have accumulated enough wealth or achieved certain milestones in life. However, it is important to realize that life is driven by values, and these values need to be cultivated over time. Waiting for the perfect moment or circumstance to start giving back or helping others may result in missed opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment. Therefore, it is crucial to begin practicing acts of kindness and generosity with whatever resources and capabilities one possesses at present, rather than waiting for an ideal situation in the future. By honing these values in the present moment, individuals can lay a strong foundation for a life filled with purpose and meaning.
It is essential for me to develop a strategy to attract resources into my life that align with the values I have established for myself. Life can be compared to sailing on the high seas, where setting sail against the wind allows for correction and navigation in the desired direction. Just like sailing, affluence and influence work together to project and manifest the values that are ingrained within an individual. By building the right values based on the teachings of God, one can trust in divine guidance to lead them towards a fulfilling life.
Looking back at the challenges faced during the pandemic, it is evident that many believers struggled due to a lack of foundational principles in their faith. The inability to attend physical church services led to a decline in spiritual strength for thousands of individuals. This highlights the importance of establishing solid doctrines rooted in the word of God, rather than relying on man-made traditions. By focusing on core beliefs and values, believers can navigate through difficult times with resilience and unwavering faith.
An example of such a foundational principle is the act of generosity towards God, such as giving tithes and offerings. This practice should not be limited to Sunday church services but should be a consistent part of one’s life throughout the week. By adhering to this doctrine, one can ensure that God’s portion is returned to Him faithfully, regardless of external circumstances. This unwavering commitment to spiritual principles not only strengthens one’s faith but also ensures a solid foundation for navigating life’s challenges with grace and integrity.
For the past three decades, I have been living my life in accordance with certain biblical doctrines and principles. It has been over 30 years since I was saved, and for the last 28 years, I have been following these teachings. I firmly believe that one’s faith should not be shaken by external circumstances, such as being unable to attend church for a few weeks. It is important to maintain a steadfast and unwavering spirit, rather than becoming cantankerous and combative towards others. This is in line with the biblical concept of allowing Christ to be formed within oneself, as mentioned by Paul in his teachings.
When it comes to the pursuit of material abundance, it is crucial to examine one’s motives. While there is nothing inherently wrong with desiring material wealth, the intention behind it is what truly matters. Many individuals seek riches not for practical reasons, but rather to flaunt their wealth and compete with others. I can recall a time when I was promised a brand new official car, and my initial thought was that it would elevate my status in the community. However, upon receiving the car, I realized that my motives were misguided, as the reaction from those around me did not align with my expectations.
This experience served as a valuable lesson, highlighting the importance of examining one’s intentions and motives. It is essential to ensure that the pursuit of material wealth is not driven by a desire to show off or compete with others. Instead, the focus should be on using one’s resources for meaningful and positive purposes, such as contributing to the well-being of others and engaging in acts of kindness. By allowing Christ to be formed within oneself, the pursuit of material abundance can be aligned with virtuous intentions, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
The motivation behind attending multiple prayer meetings and constantly asking for blessings from God should not be to show off to others, whether it be siblings or friends. It is important to remind ourselves that the purpose of abundance is not to flaunt material possessions or achievements, but rather to live a purpose-driven life. In a society where oppression of the poor and less privileged is prevalent, it is crucial to understand that true abundance comes from using our blessings to help others and make a positive impact in the world.
Living in an environment where there is a lack of basic necessities like stable power supply can be challenging, especially in third world countries like many parts of Africa. Those who are fortunate enough to afford their own power generators may face situations where others come seeking refuge during power outages. However, it is essential to remember that the purpose of affluence is not to hoard resources or deny others access, but rather to share blessings and spread kindness. It is an opportunity to show gratitude and generosity towards those in need.
Irresponsible enjoyment and accumulation of wealth beyond measure can lead to negative consequences, such as corruption and greed. In many third world countries, corruption is rampant, driven by the fear of poverty and the desire for material wealth. Some individuals engage in stealing and unethical practices without truly understanding the impact of their actions. It is crucial to recognize that true abundance comes from using our resources wisely, helping others in need, and living a life guided by purpose and integrity. Wealth should not be hoarded for personal gain, but rather shared to uplift others and make a positive difference in society.
There are individuals who engage in stealing, yet they do not find any satisfaction in the ill-gotten gains. This behavior is reminiscent of the biblical account of Achan, who took a Babylonian garment in the book of Joshua chapter 7. Achan’s actions led to disastrous consequences as he brought the cursed item into Israel. Similarly, many people today covet vast sums of money without understanding the purpose behind it. They resort to theft, only to realize that they cannot derive any benefit from the stolen wealth. This pattern reflects a cursed mindset that can plague individuals’ lives.
It is crucial to recognize that reckless enjoyment of wealth can lead to detrimental outcomes. Some individuals constantly seek pleasure, indulging in parties and extravagant lifestyles without considering the consequences. Even if one is a shareholder in a club or establishment, it is essential to reflect on the true purpose of money. Money should not be squandered on frivolous activities, as its intended use is to build a foundation for future generations. Engaging in irresponsible spending and excessive partying can result in a life devoid of true fulfillment and purpose.
Fear-based hoarding is another detrimental behavior that some individuals exhibit. The constant fear of scarcity drives them to accumulate possessions beyond what is necessary, ultimately leading to poverty. Additionally, the pursuit of wealth can become an idol in one’s life, overshadowing the true blessings that come from a relationship with a higher power. While it is not wrong to desire material possessions, it is essential to prioritize values that align with a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. Seeking wealth for the sole purpose of acquiring extravagant items is a misguided pursuit that can lead to spiritual emptiness.
I am unaware of the identity of the individual I am addressing this morning, but I hold the belief that God is prompting certain individuals to repent. This pertains to our thought processes and perspectives, and it is when we engage with the word of God that this transformation should occur rapidly. The opportunities to engage in acts of kindness and generosity should be plentiful. The first Sunday of December 2021 marks the occasion for opportunities to abound in good works. As we approach Christmas, the spirit of giving should be at the forefront of our minds. I am issuing a challenge to this congregation today, urging everyone to make this Christmas a memorable one for someone else. Let us strive to ensure that someone experiences the best Christmas of their life thus far, all because of the kindness and generosity that we have chosen to extend.
Is this challenge a worthy one? I believe it is. Glory be to Jesus. In the book of Luke, chapter 10, we encounter the parable of the Good Samaritan. Although time does not permit me to read the entire passage, I trust that you are familiar with the story. This Christmas, in December, God desires for each of us to embody the spirit of the Good Samaritan. Whether it is someone in our neighborhood, a colleague at work, or a complete stranger, God is calling us to be a source of kindness and assistance to those around us. Proverbs 19, verse 17 in the Amplified translation emphasizes the importance of extending a helping hand to the poor. It states that those who are gracious and lend a hand to the poor are, in fact, lending to the Lord. The Lord, in turn, promises to repay them for their good deeds. Giving to the poor is not only a responsibility but also a significant aspect of the abundance that God bestows upon us.
The purpose of the abundance that God has blessed us with is, in part, to give to the poor. This act of generosity not only sets individuals up for angelic assistance but also positions them for divine appointments in the unfolding of God’s plan. Acts chapter 10 provides an example of this principle in action. When Cornelius had an encounter with God, one of the commendable traits mentioned about him was his generosity towards the poor. The angel that visited Cornelius informed him that his alms giving had come as a memorial before God. Therefore, it is evident that giving to the poor is not only a commendable act but also one that attracts divine favor and intervention.
In the book of Acts, chapter 10, verse 1, the story of Cornelius, a man from Syria, is recounted. Cornelius was a Centurion in the Italian Regiment, a position that held great authority and responsibility. Despite not being a Jew or a Christian, Cornelius was described as a devout man who feared God. He was known for his generosity towards others, regularly giving alms to those in need and praying to God consistently. This dedication to living out his values of generosity and faithfulness did not go unnoticed.
One day, around the ninth hour, Cornelius had a vision where an angel of God appeared to him. Startled by the sight, Cornelius asked the angel what message he had brought. The angel conveyed to Cornelius that his prayers and alms had been recognized by God and had come up as a memorial before Him. This divine encounter marked a turning point in Cornelius’ life, as he was instructed to send for a man named Peter in Joppa.
When Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, he witnessed the power of God moving among the Gentiles, a sight that was unexpected and groundbreaking. This event highlighted the importance of good works and generosity in the eyes of God. It serves as a reminder that acts of kindness and compassion towards others can lead to divine encounters and blessings. Therefore, it is crucial to remain sensitive to the needs of those around us and to continue to show love and generosity, as these actions can pave the way for miraculous interventions in our lives and the lives of others.
Living in a bustling city like Lagos comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to dealing with scammers. It is not uncommon to encounter individuals who will spin elaborate tales in an attempt to extort money from unsuspecting victims. These stories often seem too good to be true, leaving one feeling skeptical and questioning the motives behind such narratives. The constant exposure to such deceitful practices can harden one’s heart and diminish their capacity for empathy.
However, despite the prevalence of scammers, it is essential to maintain a balance between being cautious and compassionate. While it is crucial to exercise discernment and not enable dishonest behavior, it is equally important not to let cynicism cloud one’s ability to empathize with those in genuine need. Striking this delicate balance requires a level of wisdom and prudence to navigate through the complexities of a city like Lagos, where trust can easily be exploited for personal gain.
As the Christmas season approaches, it serves as a timely reminder of the importance of generosity and compassion towards others. Just as God gave his best gift in the form of his son, Jesus Christ, during Christmas, it is an opportunity for individuals to reflect on how they can give their best to those less fortunate. Drawing inspiration from biblical teachings that emphasize the importance of helping the poor and foreigners, it is a call to action to extend a helping hand to those in need and embody the spirit of giving during this festive season.
The divine instruction given to Israel emphasized the importance of generosity towards the less fortunate and foreigners among them. It was a reminder that even though they had worked hard for their possessions, they should not forget to share with those in need. This act of leaving some crops deliberately for the poor and foreigners reflected God’s desire for compassion and kindness to be shown to all, regardless of their social status or background.
When reflecting on the cultural differences in tipping practices between the Third world and other regions like North America, it becomes evident that generosity plays a significant role in societal interactions. The speaker at the conference encouraged attendees to tip generously, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the service provided by others. This culture of generosity extends beyond monetary transactions and serves as a reminder to show gratitude and kindness towards those who serve us in various capacities.
Engaging in acts of kindness and generosity not only benefits the recipients but also enriches the giver’s life. By carrying out good works within one’s family and community, individuals can make a positive impact and contribute to the well-being of those around them. It is a reminder that blessings are meant to be shared, and by extending a helping hand to others, one can cultivate a culture of generosity that fosters unity and compassion in society.
It is crucial to highlight the importance of helping those in need within your family and community. Whether it’s a cousin, a long-time friend, or someone else that God puts in your path this Christmas, it is essential to extend a helping hand. As mentioned in Corinthians 8 verses 14 and 15 in the Passion Translation, the idea of sharing abundance is emphasized. Your surplus can meet someone else’s need, and vice versa, creating a fair balance. This concept of equality and fair balance is something that Christians should embody, especially during the holiday season.
The story of Nehemiah in chapter 2 illustrates the significance of being aware of the needs of your community. Nehemiah’s concern for the state of his city and his desire to rebuild and repair it is a powerful example of taking action to make a positive impact. Just like Nehemiah, we should be attentive to the needs of our family, community, and society at large. This Christmas season, let us be inspired to be repairers and rebuilders in our own communities, following the example set by Nehemiah.
Beyond the holiday season, it is important to remember that the purpose of abundance is not just for personal gain, but to be able to help others in need. Whether it’s within your family, your community of faith, or the larger society, there are always opportunities to make a difference. Let us strive to create a culture of giving and support, where everyone has their needs met and where we actively work towards building a fair and balanced society. This Christmas, let us commit to being agents of change and compassion, spreading love and kindness wherever we go. Amen.
It’s interesting how some people, when asked to contribute to their community, immediately dismiss the idea because they live in a wealthy area like Banana Island. They seem to think that because they live in a nice place, they don’t need to do anything to help others. It’s as if they’ve forgotten that they came from a village and that they have the ability to make a difference. For example, there’s an estate called Nicon Town across the road from us, and while it’s a nice place to live, there’s still work to be done in the neighboring Jakande area. As a church, we’ve been involved in helping the people in Jakande, providing health insurance and access to medical care. We believe that it’s not enough to just pray; we also need to take action and do good works.
We believe that it’s important to make connections and build bridges within our families and communities so that the gospel can have a positive impact. God wants us to be able to build bridges that the gospel can ride on, rather than just consuming everything for ourselves. At The Elevation Church, we have set up the Pistis Foundation, our social intervention arm, to address various social issues. We support initiatives such as the Ubumi outreach, scholarships for kids from the streets, and a shelter for children. While it may seem like a small start, we believe that every effort counts, and we hope to expand our impact in the future.
We understand that it’s not enough to just focus on our own comfort and well-being. We have a responsibility to help those in need and work towards ending poverty. We believe that by taking action and supporting initiatives like the Pistis Foundation, we can make a real difference in the lives of others. We hope that others will join us in our efforts to build bridges and create positive change in our communities. By working together, we can make a lasting impact and bring abundance to those in need.
The purpose of abundance is to do good works, as there will always be those in poverty, as Jesus mentioned that the poor will always be present. It is crucial to understand the significance of spreading the gospel to these places, as it is through the message of Jesus that people can be lifted out of poverty. When individuals encountered Jesus, they witnessed miracles and heard the good news, which has the power to transform lives and provide hope for those in need. By sharing the gospel, we can offer a new beginning to those living in poverty, giving them a chance to improve their circumstances and find a renewed sense of purpose.
As we look towards the future, it is essential to consider ways in which we can make a difference in the lives of those struggling with poverty. One impactful approach is to start an NGO or create entrepreneurial opportunities that can empower individuals to lift themselves out of poverty. Education is also a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty, as seen in the transformation of children who, within a few months, were able to read and write after receiving proper education. By investing in education and entrepreneurship, we can help change destinies and provide a pathway for individuals to overcome poverty.
Sending the gospel to nations is a fundamental aspect of utilizing wealth for a greater purpose. By spreading the message of Jesus and planting churches in different regions, we can reach those who may not have had the opportunity to hear the good news. It is important to consider how our resources can contribute to mission work and church planting, as this is a powerful way to impact communities and bring hope to those in need. As we reflect on the enduring righteousness of God, let us strive to disperse our abundance abroad and send the gospel to nations, fulfilling the purpose of wealth in sharing the message of Jesus with the world.
As a socialite, you have the opportunity to sponsor various events such as shows, golf competitions, and chess competitions. While these activities are not inherently bad, it is crucial to remember that above all, you are a child of God and a part of His kingdom army. The most important thing to God on this earth is human beings and the redemption of their souls. It is through the preaching of the gospel that individuals find redemption. Therefore, it is essential to consider whether your financial contributions are supporting the spread of the gospel and leading people to make decisions for Jesus.
It is important to reflect on where the gospel will be preached because of your abundance and who will come to know Jesus because of your generosity. This introspection is a significant question that each of us must be willing to answer. Ensuring that your financial resources are directed towards missions, churches, and para-church ministries that actively preach the gospel is crucial. It is not about waiting for specific requests to give, but rather allowing God to move your heart based on the teachings you have received.
Additionally, giving to authority figures is another way to abound in good works. In Matthew chapter ten, verses 40, 41, and 42, Jesus emphasizes the importance of receiving authority figures. By supporting and giving to those in positions of authority, you are participating in good works and aligning yourself with the teachings of Jesus. Therefore, as you consider your financial blessings, it is essential to think about how you can contribute to spreading the gospel, supporting ministries, and giving to authority figures in a way that reflects your faith and values.
When discussing the importance of honoring and respecting authority figures, it is crucial to begin with one’s parents or parental figures. Especially during the holiday season, such as Christmas, it is essential to consider how you can practically show love and appreciation to your parents, whether they are still alive or have passed away. This could involve thoughtful gestures, such as spending quality time with them, giving them gifts, or simply expressing gratitude for their role in your life. It is a time to reflect on how you can be a blessing and honor those who have played a significant role in shaping who you are today.
In some cases, individuals may find themselves in a position where their parents have passed away, leaving behind other family members, such as uncles and aunties, who may be in need. This Christmas season presents an opportunity to consider how you can support and assist these relatives who may be less fortunate or in need of care. It is a time to reflect on the values of compassion, generosity, and kindness, and to consider how you can make a positive impact on the lives of those around you, especially those who may be vulnerable or in need of support.
It is important to remember that showing respect and honor to one’s parents or parental figures is not solely about material gifts or financial support. It is about recognizing the sacrifices they have made, the love they have shown, and the wisdom they have imparted. Even if your parents or parental figures may not express their needs or desires openly, it is essential to find ways to show appreciation and care for them, whether through small gestures or meaningful acts of kindness. By honoring and respecting those who have guided and supported you throughout your life, you not only fulfill a moral obligation but also create a sense of fulfillment and warmth in your own heart.
It is of utmost importance to pay attention to the fact that we are discussing authority figures in this particular passage of scripture. Jesus also addressed the people, emphasizing the significance of being a blessing to others. In Galatians 6, verse 6, Paul writes, instructing those who are taught in the word to communicate with those who teach, sharing all good things. It is crucial to note that the intention is not to solicit or canvass for personal gain, as Paul clarifies that he has never asked for anything from the church members. He emphasizes that God meets his needs and uses the people He chooses. The message is clear that those who are blessed should recognize that part of their abundance should be used to minister to those who teach and bless them.
Furthermore, the passage highlights the importance of reciprocating the blessings received from others, especially during the Christmas season. It is an opportunity to express gratitude and reciprocate the blessings that have been bestowed upon individuals. The emphasis is not solely on the speaker, but on all authority figures who have played a significant role in the lives of others. The message is a reminder to be mindful of those who have made a way for others, whether in their careers, personal lives, or spiritual journeys. It is a call to demonstrate gratitude and reciprocate the blessings received from authority figures, acknowledging the role they have played in one’s life.
In essence, the passage serves as a reminder to maintain a balanced perspective on giving to authority figures. It is not about fulfilling an obligation or duty, but rather about honoring and demonstrating gratitude towards those who have been instrumental in one’s life. Giving to authority figures is not solely for their benefit, but it also serves as a means of honoring and demonstrating gratitude, ultimately leading to a reward. The message emphasizes the importance of reciprocating blessings and acknowledging the role of authority figures in one’s life, highlighting the significance of gratitude and honor in the act of giving.
Today, I want to encourage you to consider creating a monthly budget for charitable works. It’s important to start with a defined percentage, especially as we approach the new year. By allocating a specific percentage of your income to good works, you can make a meaningful impact in the lives of those around you. Whether it’s helping the less fortunate, blessing people in your community, or assisting family members in need, the act of giving can be a source of great blessing. Imagine the joy of being able to provide for someone’s education or helping them overcome financial challenges. As Christmas approaches, I urge you to make plans to give to others, aligning with the teachings we’ve discussed today. This is an actionable step that you can take to make a positive difference in the world.
In addition to creating a monthly budget for good works, I encourage you to develop a Christmas giving list and budget more generously than ever before. Consider giving to those around you and think about how you can extend your generosity in the coming year. As you pray during this Christmas season and take time to plan for 2022, consider incorporating a good works budget into your business and personal finances. By doing so, you’ll be aligning with the purpose of God for your life and making a tangible impact on the world around you. Let’s make a commitment to abound in good works and embrace the spirit of generosity. Remember the words of Proverbs 11:24, which reminds us that the generous will prosper, while the stingy will suffer.
