BUILDING RESILIENT RELATIONSHIPS

The focus this month is on building resilient relationships, which we have aptly named “Shatterproof.” Last week, we delved into the characteristics of the end times, as mentioned in the Scriptures. It is foretold that people will become lovers of themselves, boastful, stubborn, rebellious, and quick to sever ties. The Apostle Paul also warned about perilous times that will bring treacherous spirits into relationships, making it challenging to maintain faithfulness. However, it is crucial for us to be aware of these prophecies without succumbing to them, as we are not under the dominion of the devil.

The spirit of the end of the age is often associated with the Antichrist, characterized by deception and deceit. In today’s world, we witness a rise in divorce rates and various challenges in relationships, but we are urged not to be troubled. Instead, we are encouraged to seek wisdom and trust in God’s plan for our lives. Psalm 133 emphasizes the beauty of unity among brethren, likening it to the anointing oil on Aaron’s head. Despite the turmoil in the world, we are reminded to hold onto faith and seek guidance in navigating the complexities of relationships.

As we continue to explore the theme of building resilient relationships, it is essential to remember that God’s plan surpasses the challenges we face. While the world may be filled with deception and turmoil, we are called to stand firm in our faith and seek wisdom in our interactions with others. By understanding the characteristics of the end times and the spirit of the Antichrist, we can navigate relationships with discernment and grace, trusting in God’s ultimate purpose for our lives. Let us hold onto the promise of unity and faithfulness, knowing that God’s plan for our relationships is greater than any challenges we may encounter.

The Message Translation emphasizes the importance of unity and togetherness among brothers and sisters, likening it to costly anointing oil. It highlights the fact that many individuals pray for anointing, yet fail to realize that true anointing comes from fostering strong relationships and working together in harmony. The Scripture mentioned in the text underscores the idea that unity and synergy are essential in attracting the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It draws a parallel between the anointing oil flowing down Aaron’s beard and the power of togetherness in commanding spiritual blessings.

The text also points out that mere prayers and songs for anointing are not enough if they are not accompanied by efforts to build vital relationships and promote unity. It stresses the importance of taking action and working towards unity, as faith without corresponding actions is deemed ineffective. The concept of providential help being invested in unity and togetherness is highlighted, indicating that collaboration and synergy are key elements in achieving success and fulfillment in various aspects of life.

Furthermore, the text draws a parallel between the principles of collaboration in the business world and the significance of unity in personal relationships and family dynamics. It suggests that just as big companies thrive through mergers and acquisitions, individuals and families can also benefit from celebrating unity, connectedness, and vital relationships. By acknowledging the value of working together and honoring relationships, one can tap into the divine design of unity that is inherent in human nature and essential for personal growth and fulfillment.

Today, we will delve into the intricate dynamics of resilience and fragility within relationships. We will explore the factors that contribute to the disposability and breakability of certain relationships, as well as the reasons behind the durability and resistance of others. It is essential to understand why some relationships are easily broken while others remain steadfast in the face of challenges. The concept of resilience and fragility in relationships is akin to the analogy of a three-fold cord, as mentioned in the Bible, which signifies strength and resistance to being easily broken. This analogy sheds light on the importance of resilience and the detrimental effects of fragility in relationships.

Consider the analogy of fragile items being labeled for careful handling during travel. Similarly, some relationships are labeled as fragile due to their vulnerability and susceptibility to being easily broken. For instance, a marriage of ten years may be perceived as fragile, requiring delicate handling and care. The question arises as to when such a relationship will transition from fragility to strength and resilience. The danger of perpetuating fragility in relationships is highlighted, as it makes them susceptible to being devoured by adversities, akin to low-hanging fruits that are easily targeted. This danger extends beyond marriages to encompass business partnerships, where unresolved issues are swept under the carpet, leading to the eventual downfall of the partnership.

The tendency to rely on crutches and temporary fixes, rather than trusting in divine healing and restoration, perpetuates fragility in relationships. Many individuals become complacent with fragility, contrary to the will of God, which emphasizes strength and resilience in relationships. It is imperative to recognize the detrimental effects of over-celebrating fragility and to shift towards fostering resilience and durability in relationships. By addressing underlying issues, trusting in divine intervention, and relinquishing reliance on temporary fixes, relationships can transition from fragility to strength, in alignment with the will of God.

The passage in Matthew 7, verse 24 from the Amplified Classic Translation emphasizes the importance of not only hearing the words of Jesus but also acting upon them. Jesus uses the analogy of two builders, one who builds his house on a rock and the other who builds on sand. The wise man who builds on the rock represents those who hear and obey the teachings of Jesus, resulting in a strong foundation that withstands the storms of life. On the other hand, the foolish man who builds on sand symbolizes those who hear but do not act upon Jesus’ words, leading to a weak foundation that collapses when faced with challenges.

Jesus’ message in this scripture is a call to be intentional and deliberate in our actions and choices. It serves as a reminder that the decisions we make, the values we uphold, and the foundation we build our lives upon will determine our ability to withstand the trials and tribulations that come our way. By emphasizing the importance of building on a solid foundation, Jesus highlights the need for wisdom, prudence, and foresight in our daily lives.

The analogy of building a house on a rock versus building on sand serves as a powerful metaphor for the fragility or stability of our lives. Just as a house built on sand is vulnerable to collapse in the face of adversity, a life built on shaky principles or values is prone to disintegration. Jesus’ teachings urge us to prioritize building our lives on a firm foundation of faith, obedience, and wisdom, so that we may weather the storms of life with resilience and strength. By heeding these words and taking intentional steps to fortify our spiritual and moral foundation, we can navigate life’s challenges with grace and steadfastness, ultimately avoiding the pitfalls of fragility and instability.

As a trained engineer, the ability to see beyond the surface is a crucial skill that is instilled in us through rigorous training and education. When walking around a site or inspecting an underground mine, it is imperative to pay close attention to details and not simply walk away when cracks or potential safety hazards are observed. The training received in Mining Engineering emphasizes the importance of being vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of not only oneself but also of others who may be affected by any oversight.

In industries such as Solid Minerals, Oil, and Gas, the emphasis on safety is paramount. Whether working underground, on the surface, on a rig, or in a houseboat, safety protocols must be strictly adhered to in order to prevent any potential disasters that could endanger lives. The rigorous training and experience gained in these critical environments underscore the importance of always prioritizing safety first, as even the smallest oversight can have catastrophic consequences.

Just as in professional settings, the same level of attentiveness and care should be applied to personal relationships. It is essential to address any cracks or issues that may arise in relationships, as ignoring them can lead to fragility and potential breakdowns. Cultivating enduring and positive relationships requires a willingness to confront challenges head-on and seek the wisdom and guidance of God to navigate through difficult situations. By acknowledging the presence of cracks and actively working towards strengthening relationships, individuals can build a solid foundation based on mutual respect, understanding, and love.

The origins of fragility in relationships can stem from various sources, such as miscommunication, lack of trust, or incompatible values. These factors can weaken the bond between individuals and make the relationship vulnerable to breaking. It is essential to identify these sources of fragility in order to address them effectively and strengthen the connection between parties. By acknowledging and understanding the root causes of fragility, individuals can work towards building a more resilient and enduring relationship.

There are certain aspects that can diminish the strength of a relationship, including neglect, dishonesty, and unresolved conflicts. These negative elements can erode the foundation of a relationship over time, leading to distance and disconnection between individuals. It is crucial to pay attention to these factors and actively work towards resolving issues in order to maintain a healthy and strong relationship. By addressing these challenges head-on, individuals can prevent further damage and foster a more positive and supportive connection.

In order to assess the durability of a relationship, it is important to consider the materials used as metaphors for the strength of the bond. Just like tissue paper, some relationships may be fragile and disposable, while others may be more resilient like paper or plastic. However, the strongest relationships are akin to steel, unyielding and resistant to bending or breaking. By reflecting on the material of one’s relationship, individuals can gain insight into its strength and make necessary adjustments to ensure its longevity and stability. It is essential to be aware of the current state of the relationship and be open to transformation in order to cultivate a strong and enduring connection with others.

The verses from Proverbs 24 and Psalm 90 emphasize the importance of wisdom in building a strong foundation in life. It is mentioned that wisdom is not necessarily tied to age, as it should ideally come with growing older. The prayer is for God to multiply wisdom in individuals so that they do not remain brittle and fragile. The concept of numbering our days to gain wisdom is highlighted, indicating that wisdom is a valuable asset that should be sought after diligently.

Growing up is distinguished from growing old, with the former being associated with wisdom and the latter with age. The text emphasizes the significance of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in establishing enduring relationships. It is mentioned that conflicts are inevitable, much like the winds and waves that come, but having wisdom and knowledge can strengthen relationships and help navigate challenges effectively.

The verses from Proverbs 24 underscore the idea that through wisdom, a house is built, and through understanding, it is established. Knowledge is highlighted as a key component in filling rooms with precious and pleasant riches. The text stresses the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge from God to fortify relationships and face the trials that come our way. By understanding the sources of fragility, such as conflicts, individuals can better equip themselves to build lasting and meaningful connections with others.

It is essential to understand that the challenges we face in our homes are often mirrored in the broader society. When dealing with financial difficulties, it is crucial to remember that you are not alone in your struggles. Thousands, even millions of people, are going through similar situations. Therefore, it is important not to overly personalize your circumstances. As stated in First Corinthians 13 and First Corinthians 10:13, there is no temptation that is unique to you. God is faithful and will not allow you to face more than you can handle. He will provide a way out of every temptation so that you can endure it.

Relationships are complex, and conflicts are inevitable. Jesus himself acknowledged that offenses would arise, emphasizing the certainty of conflict in Luke 17:1. While conflict may be unavoidable, it is crucial to approach it with wisdom to minimize its impact. By gaining grace and strength, we can better manage conflicts when they arise. It is important to recognize that conflict is a natural part of relationships, and our focus should be on handling it effectively rather than expecting it to never occur.

Each individual is unique, and this is reflected in the way we approach various aspects of life, including relationships and responsibilities. Understanding and respecting these differences is key to navigating conflicts and challenges effectively. For example, in the scenario described, the husband and wife have different approaches to their roles and responsibilities. While the husband may be more flexible and adaptable, the wife has a specific focus and dedication to her tasks. By acknowledging and appreciating these differences, they can support each other in their individual endeavors and work together to overcome any conflicts that may arise.

I made the decision to take a bath, and as I immersed myself in the water, I began to pray, asking the Holy Ghost to touch my daughter’s heart so that she would accompany me to church. My intentions were pure, as I wanted to pray for her well-being. It was an opportunity for me to show my love and care for her. Reflecting on my relationship with my wife, I realized that surprises were not necessary. After years of marriage, I understood her preferences and desires. Instead of planning surprises, I would simply ask her what she wanted to make an occasion special for her.

Every home is unique, and it is essential to understand the person you are dealing with to avoid misunderstandings. In my case, I knew that my wife preferred to know where she was going rather than being surprised. This knowledge helped me navigate our relationship smoothly and avoid unnecessary conflicts. Wisdom plays a crucial role in handling conflicts effectively and minimizing misunderstandings. By understanding each other’s preferences and communicating openly, conflicts can be resolved peacefully.

Reflecting on a recent discussion with my wife, I realized the importance of handling situations with care and understanding. If I had not approached the conversation well, it could have led to unnecessary conflict. It is crucial to communicate openly and honestly in relationships to avoid misunderstandings and hurt feelings. By being vulnerable and sharing my thoughts, I hope to emphasize the significance of understanding each other’s perspectives and preferences to maintain harmony in relationships. It is essential to prioritize open communication and mutual respect to build strong and lasting relationships.

After completing my bath, I returned to sit beside her and expressed my desire to attend church. I mentioned that she was scheduled to preach in Ikoyi, and while I understood that was her calling, I wanted to be in church to pray with her on her special day. She agreed to come to church with me, but pointed out the effort it took to convince her. She warned that surprising her in such a manner could lead to conflict, which she likened to friction – a natural consequence of use, action, and interaction. Conflict, she explained, indicated that something was happening, that life was present. Without conflict, she suggested, one might not truly be living together, as misunderstandings and lack of communication could lead to conflict.

She emphasized the importance of investing heavily in forgiveness and apology to minimize the impact of conflict and reduce its occurrence. Conflict, she reiterated, was a sign of use, action, and interaction, highlighting the need for understanding and communication to prevent conflicts from escalating. She stressed the significance of forgiveness and apology in maintaining harmonious relationships, underscoring their role in resolving conflicts and fostering understanding between individuals. By investing in forgiveness and apology, she believed that conflicts could be managed effectively, allowing relationships to thrive and grow stronger over time.

Recalling a story shared by a mentor many years ago, she recounted an incident involving her in-laws that occurred about two decades prior. During a visit to her parents-in-law, a simple dinner escalated into a heated argument, causing embarrassment to all present. Despite their best efforts, the conflict could not be diffused, leaving her and her wife feeling uncomfortable and helpless. The mentor’s story served as a reminder of the importance of effective communication, understanding, and conflict resolution in maintaining healthy relationships. It underscored the need for open dialogue, forgiveness, and mutual respect to prevent conflicts from arising and escalating, emphasizing the value of investing in forgiveness and apology to nurture strong and lasting relationships.

The scene unfolded in a serene manner as everyone quietly left the dinner table and retired to bed without uttering a word. The following morning, to his complete surprise, the man of the house was the one who roused everyone from their slumber, busily preparing for the day ahead. He was seen loading bags into the car, cleaning and warming it up, all the while reminding the rest of the household that their mother was departing on a trip. The man’s actions were met with amusement and affection from his wife, who emerged dressed and ready for the day. Together, they shared a moment of laughter, exchanged kisses, and decided to pray before embarking on the journey to the airport.

The couple’s display of unity and understanding left an impression on the onlookers, who observed the scene with a sense of bewilderment. The husband’s proactive approach to ensuring a smooth departure for his wife, despite the early hour, showcased a level of care and consideration that was not lost on those witnessing the exchange. The seamless coordination between the husband and wife, as they prepared for the trip together, highlighted the strength of their bond and the importance of mutual respect in a relationship. It was evident that their actions were guided by a deep sense of love and commitment to each other.

The narrative served as a poignant reminder of the value of wisdom and maturity in handling conflicts within relationships. The couple’s ability to navigate a potential disagreement with grace and understanding prevented the situation from escalating into a deeper rift. The speaker emphasized the significance of prioritizing forgiveness and love over ego and pride in order to maintain strong and enduring relationships. By approaching conflicts in a mature and scriptural manner, couples can build shatterproof marriages that withstand the test of time. The anecdote underscored the importance of fostering a foundation of mutual respect and communication to ensure that relationships thrive and endure.

It is crucial to recognize the significance of not allowing fragility to seep into our relationships due to constant friction. These challenges are normal and serve as tests to the foundation of our connections. It is essential to communicate that you are okay, even when faced with conflicts or misunderstandings. By addressing these issues head-on and not letting them fester, we prevent minor disagreements from escalating into major problems that overshadow the positive aspects of our relationships.

In today’s digital age, it is common to witness the breakdown of relationships through impersonal means such as WhatsApp messages. The ease of sending a quick message to end a relationship can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It is important to handle such situations with care and respect, ensuring that communication is clear and honest. Rushing to end a relationship without proper communication can lead to unnecessary pain and confusion for both parties involved.

External challenges can also impact relationships, as seen in the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas in Acts chapter 15. The presence of an external individual, such as John Mark, can strain relationships and lead to conflicts. It is crucial to focus on how external factors affect our relationships and work towards resolving these challenges together. By acknowledging and addressing external influences, we can strengthen our relationships and prevent unnecessary strain caused by factors beyond our control.

In Acts 15, a significant rift occurred between Barnabas and Paul regarding the inclusion of John Mark in their missionary journey. Barnabas was determined to take John Mark with them, but Paul strongly opposed this idea. Paul insisted that they should not take John Mark with them due to his previous departure from them in Pamphilia and his failure to join them in their work. This disagreement led to a sharp contention between Barnabas and Paul, ultimately resulting in their separation. Barnabas then took John Mark and sailed to Cypress, while Paul chose Silas as his companion and departed.

This incident in Acts 15 serves as a cautionary tale about the impact of external factors on relationships and partnerships. John Mark’s actions disrupted the longstanding relationship and partnership between Barnabas and Paul, highlighting the potential influence of external individuals on the dynamics of a relationship. The narrative underscores the presence of individuals who operate under deceit and seek to sabotage vital relationships. These individuals may engage in manipulative behavior, spreading conflicting messages and causing discord between parties. The detrimental effects of such external factors on relationships emphasize the need for discernment and wisdom in navigating interpersonal dynamics.

The story of Barnabas, Paul, and John Mark in Acts 15 also conveys a broader message about the challenges that external factors can pose to relationships. It underscores the importance of tolerance, wisdom, and patience in addressing external influences that may threaten the stability of relationships. The narrative encourages individuals to seek divine guidance and to exercise discernment in dealing with external factors that could potentially disrupt or destroy the relationships that God has ordained. Ultimately, the story serves as a reminder of the need to prioritize the preservation and nurturing of relationships, even in the face of external challenges, in order to align with the divine purpose for those relationships.

It is a well-known fact that the devil will always try to sabotage any relationship that has the potential to thrive. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to be vigilant and watch out for any signs of the devil’s interference in relationships with great potential. For singles, it is important to not only focus on the current state of a relationship but also on its potential. By assessing the potential of a relationship, one can determine the level of resilience required to navigate through challenges and not hastily jump in and out of relationships.

Challenges and storms are inevitable in any relationship, and sometimes external factors can exert immense pressure on the relationship. The devil will go to great lengths to create discord within families, hindering unity and agreement, especially in prayer. It is essential to emphasize the power of praying together as a couple, as unity in prayer can significantly reduce the impact of external factors that may threaten the foundation of the relationship. By following the scriptural guidance that highlights the strength in unity and agreement in prayer, couples can fortify their bond and shield their relationship from potential destruction.

Furthermore, personal weaknesses and challenges can also pose a threat to the stability of a relationship. It is imperative for individuals to acknowledge their vulnerabilities and work on overcoming personal shortcomings that may impact the relationship negatively. By addressing personal weaknesses and challenges, couples can strengthen their bond and build a solid foundation based on mutual growth and understanding. Taking the time to pray together, seek unity, and address personal vulnerabilities can help couples withstand the storms of life and external factors that may jeopardize the harmony of their home. In essence, by being aware of the devil’s tactics, prioritizing unity in prayer, and addressing personal weaknesses, couples can safeguard their relationship and nurture its potential for growth and longevity.

In the book of Hebrews, chapter 12, verses 1 and 2, the author emphasizes the importance of letting go of the burdens and sins that weigh us down in our relationships. The imagery of a race is used to convey the idea that we must strive to run the race of life with endurance, focusing on Jesus as the ultimate example of faith and perseverance. By looking to Him, we can find the strength to overcome the obstacles that hinder our relationships and prevent us from reaching our full potential.

The text highlights the danger of becoming complacent in our relationships, allowing our personal faults and sins to fester and grow over time. These seemingly minor issues can escalate into major problems that threaten the very foundation of our partnerships, whether in business or marriage. The analogy of leaven spreading throughout the whole lump serves as a warning against the insidious nature of sin and how it can gradually erode trust and integrity in relationships.

The passage also addresses the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and not shifting the blame onto others. Whether it is in a business partnership or marriage, each individual must be willing to carry their own weight and contribute equally to the success of the relationship. Avoiding laziness, dishonesty, or selfishness is crucial in maintaining healthy and strong relationships, as these negative traits can lead to resentment, mistrust, and ultimately, the breakdown of the partnership. By reflecting on the teachings of Hebrews 12, we can strive to let go of the weights and sins that hinder our relationships and work towards building stronger, more fulfilling connections with others.

It is not accurate to attribute the state of being “dirty” to a divine creation, as it is a result of personal choices and actions. The impact of these choices can be detrimental to the dynamics of a relationship, especially when they involve habits such as financial irresponsibility, recklessness, gambling, and substance abuse. The advice to seek counseling, therapy, or rehabilitation is often given by concerned individuals, but it is ultimately up to the individual to acknowledge the negative impact of their actions on their relationship.

The consequences of consistently engaging in behaviors that betray the trust of a spouse can lead to the erosion of the foundation of the relationship. It is important to recognize that growth and change are essential in maintaining a healthy relationship. Refusing to acknowledge the harm caused by one’s actions and expecting the relationship to remain unaffected is unrealistic. It is crucial to understand that accountability and responsibility are integral to building and sustaining a strong family unit.

Creating an environment of openness and accountability within a family is essential for its well-being. Encouraging each member to take responsibility for their actions and choices is a fundamental aspect of fostering a strong family dynamic. It is important to recognize that personal growth and change are necessary for the betterment of the family unit. Embracing accountability and responsibility, especially as a parent, is crucial in setting a positive example for the next generation. Ultimately, acknowledging the impact of one’s actions on the family and taking steps to address harmful behaviors is essential for building a strong and healthy family.

It is essential to address personal weaknesses and faults in order to maintain healthy relationships and marriages. By acknowledging our own shortcomings and working towards repentance and growth, we can overcome the obstacles that may hinder our connections with others.

It is crucial to take the time to reflect on our behaviors and attitudes and make the necessary changes to become better individuals.

This process of self-improvement is not only beneficial for ourselves but also for those around us, especially in the context of romantic relationships.

For singles, it is important to recognize and address any character flaws or tendencies that may cause issues in future relationships. Short-tempered individuals, for example, should work on developing patience and emotional control before entering into marriage. Building emotional resilience and maturity during the single life can help prepare individuals for the challenges they may face in a committed relationship. It is crucial to invest time and effort in personal growth and self-awareness in order to build a strong foundation for future partnerships.

Additionally, it is important to understand that relationships go through different seasons, each requiring unique approaches and adjustments. What may work during the initial years of marriage may not be as effective later on. Recognizing and adapting to these changes is crucial for maintaining a strong and healthy relationship. Neglecting responsibilities during certain seasons, such as caring for children, can lead to increased fragility in the relationship. By being mindful of the evolving needs and dynamics within a relationship, individuals can better navigate the challenges that come with different stages of life together.

It holds great significance, especially for our elderly companions residing in our homes. The aging process is inevitable, and whether we embrace it or not, we all go through it. One of the most challenging periods in certain marriages is the phase of menopause. A man once shared his experience, expressing his surprise at how menopause almost tore his marriage apart after 30 years. The arrival of menopause brought about crises in various aspects of their relationship, including their sex life, causing turmoil and strain.

On the other hand, for younger individuals, there is the season of pregnancy. During this time, doctors may advise refraining from physical intimacy until the baby is delivered to ensure the safety of both the mother and the child. It is a period of anticipation and wonder, where one may reflect on the miracle of life and the responsibilities that come with it. It is essential to understand and respect the unique seasons that each stage of life brings, preparing oneself with knowledge, understanding, and faith to navigate through them successfully.

Transition periods are also prevalent in many marriages, especially for those living apart due to various circumstances. This separation can strain the relationship if not handled with care and understanding. It is crucial to acknowledge the challenges that come with such seasons and to prepare adequately by establishing communication channels, trust, and support systems to maintain the strength and stability of the marriage. By embracing each season with wisdom, faith, and resilience, couples can navigate through the trials and tribulations that may arise, ensuring the longevity and strength of their relationship.

A married couple attends church every Sunday, and they have three children living in three different countries. Despite the physical distance, the family makes it a point to have a two-hour Zoom meeting every Sunday where all the children must come together virtually. During a visit to their home, I stumbled upon this family tradition when they mentioned they were in a family meeting. I politely excused myself, promising to return another time since we live close by.

After leaving their home, the concept of the family Zoom meeting lingered in my mind. It dawned on me that there was wisdom to be gained from their practice of bringing the family together despite the geographical challenges. I realized that as I journey through life, I too will encounter seasons where I will need to adapt and find ways to connect with loved ones who are far away. The couple’s commitment to maintaining family unity through technology inspired me to be proactive in fostering relationships, no matter the circumstances.

Reflecting on the encounter with the couple, I came to understand that wisdom is not something we are inherently born with, but rather something we acquire through experiences and interactions with others. The lesson I learned from observing this family’s dedication to staying connected across borders served as a reminder that wisdom can be found in the most unexpected places. It reinforced the idea that learning from the practices of others can enrich our own lives and help us navigate the complexities of relationships and family dynamics.
