THE  S-FACTOR

In this new series, we are examining the concept of the blessed man. Who is this blessed individual, and what does it truly mean to be blessed? Furthermore, how can one consistently lead a blessed life? I initiated this discussion on Wednesday, focusing on the themes of decision-making and indecision, and their connection to the notion of blessing. The blessed man, as described in scripture, is someone who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked; this implies that he possesses the ability to make sound judgments. His decisions are not merely appropriate but are imbued with wisdom. I encourage those who were unable to attend the service on Wednesday to seek out the message, as it contained a wealth of information packed into the forty to fifty minutes of preaching. Feedback indicated that many found the content profound, suggesting that revisiting the message could be beneficial.

To further elaborate on the characteristics of the blessed man, it is essential to recognize that he enjoys certain advantages and receives guidance in various aspects of life. This morning, I would like to remind us that humanity is fundamentally a tripartite being, consisting of spirit, body, and soul. As stated in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, the Apostle Paul expresses a desire for the God of peace to sanctify us entirely, ensuring that our spirit, soul, and body are preserved blamelessly until the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. From Paul’s writings, we can conclude that the essence of man is spirit. In 2 Corinthians 5:1, he refers to the body as an earthly tent, emphasizing that just as one cannot venture to the moon without a spacesuit, our physical bodies serve as a means for us to be recognized in this world. The distinction between fully realized spirits and humanity lies in the fact that humans possess a spirit, which is integral to our existence.

The essence of a spirit is that it exists without a physical form, which is a fundamental distinction that we must recognize. In our current existence, the Bible indicates that we have approached the realm of the righteous, those who have been sanctified and elevated to a prophetic status. We find ourselves in the assembly of the firstborn, at the sacred site of Mount Zion. This gathering is not merely a physical congregation; it encompasses a multitude of angels, whose presence is significant yet invisible to us due to their non-corporeal nature. It is crucial to understand that while we may not perceive these spiritual beings, they are indeed present, reinforcing the idea that humanity is fundamentally spiritual in nature.

When we discuss blessings, it is imperative to grasp that their origin lies in the spiritual realm before they manifest in the physical world. The tangible blessings we often recognize are merely the effects of deeper spiritual causes. Many individuals tend to focus solely on these visible manifestations, neglecting the underlying spiritual principles that give rise to them. For instance, when observing a fan in operation, one might mistakenly attribute the blessing to the fan itself, overlooking the essential electrical power that enables its function. Thus, while material wealth is beneficial, it is not the essence of true blessing. As articulated in Luke 12:15, Jesus cautions against greed, emphasizing that the quality of life is not determined by material possessions but rather by spiritual awareness and connection. A truly blessed individual is one who is attuned to the spiritual realm, fostering a profound connection rather than a disconnection from it.

The truly blessed individual is one who experiences spiritual abundance and actively engages in a positive spiritual life. While material possessions may be present, a lack of spiritual awareness and connection can hinder one’s ability to cultivate and nurture what they possess. The scriptures caution that wealth can be fleeting, as illustrated by the notion that it may develop wings and vanish. It is essential to recognize that true blessings extend beyond familial ties, despite the value of a supportive family. A strong family unit is merely a manifestation of deeper blessings. The essence of blessing lies not in one’s social standing or position, as highlighted in Psalm 75:6, which states that promotion and recognition do not originate from earthly sources but are determined by God, who has the authority to elevate or diminish individuals. Thus, the real blessing is found in having a relationship with the divine, who governs all matters of elevation and demotion.

Furthermore, it is crucial to understand that blessings are not synonymous with intelligence, even though intellectual capability is commendable. While it is beneficial to engage with knowledgeable individuals and pursue education, one must not lose sight of the ultimate source of wisdom, which is God. Proverbs 3:5 emphasizes the importance of placing trust in the Lord rather than relying solely on one’s understanding. When human intellect is allowed to overshadow divine guidance, one risks missing out on the profound blessings that transcend mere knowledge. Intelligence can only take an individual so far; the true essence of blessing lies in recognizing that there exists a realm beyond intellectual achievement, where spiritual depth and divine favour reside.

When discussing the concept of a blessed individual, one must consider the spiritually aware person who understands that their essence is rooted in their spirit. This individual acknowledges that God is a spirit, and as such, true worship must be conducted in both spirit and truth. In the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus found in the third chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus articulates a profound truth: that which is born of the flesh is merely flesh, while that which is born of the spirit is spirit. This rebirth in the spirit occurs when one surrenders their life to Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to enter and awaken their spiritual consciousness. Although every person exists as a spiritual being, the Bible speaks of being “dead in trespasses and sins,” indicating that without an encounter with Jesus, one’s spiritual essence remains dormant.

Furthermore, it is essential to recognize that humanity has the capacity to engage with both positive and negative supernatural forces. The natural world is inextricably linked to the spiritual realm, which serves as its foundation. This connection is particularly resonant within the African context, where many have grown up with an inherent understanding of the supernatural. The teachings presented today aim to enhance awareness of the positive aspects of the supernatural, as articulated by Jesus, and to facilitate a deeper interaction with God in meaningful ways. While it is certainly beneficial to present oneself well in the physical realm, it is crucial to prioritize spiritual well-being, as superficial appearances hold little significance in the face of spiritual realities. Ultimately, the recognition of one’s spiritual identity is paramount, as external attributes do not influence the recognition of spiritual forces.

The truly blessed individual is not solely defined by their physical appearance; rather, it is their spiritual standing that distinguishes them, even recognized by malevolent forces.

The essence of this blessing is articulated in Psalm 1, which emphasizes that the blessed person is one who is aware of the paths of the wicked and the company of the scornful, yet consciously chooses to avoid such influences. This decision is not merely a result of personal aversion but stems from a profound divine support that empowers them to resist the temptations of the flesh. It is this supernatural assistance that enables them to navigate life’s challenges without succumbing to base desires, highlighting the importance of spiritual fortitude over mere physical attributes.

In our daily lives, it is essential to reflect on how we allocate our time and energy, particularly concerning our appearance. Many individuals invest significant effort into grooming, fashion, and personal presentation, often prioritizing these aspects over spiritual development. While it is commendable to prepare thoroughly for professional engagements and to present oneself well, one must also consider the state of their spirit. The true measure of a blessed individual lies not in their outward appearance or the success of their endeavors but in the spiritual alignment that ensures all things work together for their benefit. It is crucial to recognize that success is not guaranteed by speed or strength alone; rather, it is the depth of one’s spiritual foundation that ultimately determines the outcome of life’s pursuits.

In verse 17 of Daniel chapter 1, it is noted that God endowed this young man with profound knowledge and exceptional skills in literature and wisdom, granting him insight into all visions and dreams. Daniel’s role can be seen as that of an administrator, illustrating how divine blessings can manifest in one’s professional life when one allows God to guide and accompany them. This openness to spiritual influence can lead to significant advantages and assistance in various endeavors. While some may interpret this as merely a means to combat spiritual adversities, it is essential to recognize that the blessed individual, such as a software developer, may not confront demons directly but rather requires supernatural insight to create solutions that address organizational challenges.

The biblical account of Solomon further exemplifies this principle. In the book of First Kings, Solomon’s request for wisdom is met with divine favor, resulting in extraordinary discernment. A notable incident occurs when two women present a dispute regarding their newborns, leading to a situation where one child dies due to an unfortunate accident. Solomon’s ability to discern the truth amidst their conflicting narratives showcases the profound wisdom granted to him by God. This story underscores the necessity of spiritual discernment in navigating complex human interactions, as it enables one to distinguish between truth and deception. Thus, the omniscient nature of the Spirit of God is evident in the wisdom bestowed upon Solomon, which serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for divine guidance in our own lives.

The situation at hand required a decisive resolution, and all that was necessary was for one party to acknowledge the claim of motherhood. The two women both asserted their rights to the child, leading to a proposed solution that was both drastic and revealing. The suggestion was made to divide the baby in two, allowing each woman to take half. However, one woman immediately opposed this idea, expressing a preference for the child to be given to the other rather than suffer such a fate. This reaction was pivotal, as King Solomon discerned that the true mother would rather relinquish her claim than see her child harmed. This profound insight into human nature and maternal instinct showcased a level of wisdom that transcended ordinary reasoning.

Such wisdom, however, is not commonplace, particularly in an era devoid of the extensive analytical frameworks that modern business education provides. Unlike today, where one can draw parallels from historical business cases and apply learned strategies, Solomon’s judgment was inspired and instinctual, reflecting a deep understanding of human emotions and relationships. This kind of discernment is akin to the recognition of divine wisdom in individuals like Daniel and Joseph, who were acknowledged by rulers for their extraordinary abilities, attributed to the spirit of God. Their insights were not merely products of their environment but rather manifestations of a higher understanding that set them apart in their respective contexts. Thus, the ability to navigate complex human dilemmas with such clarity is a testament to the extraordinary nature of wisdom that is often divinely inspired.

It is essential to refrain from expressing dissatisfaction with your managing director, particularly when the divine influence of the Holy Spirit begins to manifest in your life. It is important to recognize that the challenges posed by your managing director cannot compare to the historical tyranny of figures such as Nebuchadnezzar. Indeed, even in his most irrational moments, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged the extraordinary qualities present in Daniel, which led him to entrust Daniel with significant responsibilities. As believers, it is crucial for us to realign our priorities appropriately, placing emphasis on the spiritual dimension, often referred to as the “S factor” or the supernatural element, which is vital for the successful execution of our divine assignments. The role of the Holy Spirit is indispensable; without His guidance and support, the blessings we receive remain incomplete. It is only through actively engaging with the Holy Spirit that we can experience the fullness of these blessings in our lives.

Furthermore, it is imperative to understand the transformative power of the Holy Spirit when we allow Him to operate freely within us. Many individuals fail to grant the Holy Spirit the necessary space to work, which hinders their spiritual growth and fulfillment. In John 14:16, Jesus promises the arrival of another Comforter, emphasizing the importance of this divine assistance. The Holy Spirit is not merely a helper in the conventional sense; He is an advocate and a source of strength for believers, ensuring that we are never alone in our endeavors. The true blessed individual is one who recognizes the Holy Spirit as a vital ally, capable of guiding us through challenges that exceed our own capabilities. When we sing about the Holy Spirit as our helper, it is crucial to understand that this relationship transcends the ordinary notion of assistance; it is about divine empowerment in areas where we are unable to act on our own.

He communicated to the disciples that He would send them another advocate. The term “advocate” in the original Greek is translated as “parakletos,” which signifies a helper or one who intercedes on behalf of another. This individual is akin to a legal representative, someone who takes on the burdens of another and argues their case. Jesus was essentially assuring His followers that they would receive someone who would assist them in the same manner He had been doing, someone who would champion their cause and advocate for their well-being. This notion of advocacy is deeply rooted in the spiritual realm, as the Bible illustrates the importance of having such support, particularly in the face of accusations. It is stated that if God were to hold us accountable for our transgressions, none could withstand the scrutiny without the intercession of the Holy Spirit.

In the spiritual landscape, there exists a constant battle of litigation, with the accuser of the brethren standing before God, making accusations day and night. The terminology of accusation is inherently legal, emphasizing the serious nature of these spiritual confrontations. The devil is not merely characterized as an evil entity; rather, he is specifically identified as the accuser, whose primary role is to bring charges against believers, especially after they have transitioned from darkness to light. For those who have embraced faith in Jesus, the devil’s power to harm is diminished, yet his ability to accuse remains potent. It is crucial for believers to recognize that without the Holy Spirit’s advocacy, they may find themselves vulnerable to these accusations. The Holy Spirit serves as a vital advocate, ensuring that believers are supported and defended against the relentless accusations of the enemy.

The believer’s status in the spiritual realm is profoundly articulated in the Scriptures, particularly in Psalm 32:1-2, as rendered in the Amplified Translation. This passage highlights the blessedness of an individual who continually seeks forgiveness for their transgressions, emphasizing that such a person is fortunate and worthy of envy. The text further elaborates that the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit is indeed blessed. For those who have accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior, this scripture serves as a foundational affirmation of their standing before God. They are assured of their blessed status, as their sins have been forgiven, despite the adversary’s attempts to challenge this divine standing.

Moreover, the role of the Holy Spirit is crucial in reinforcing this status, particularly in moments of weakness and uncertainty. Romans 8:26 illustrates that the Spirit assists us in our weaknesses, especially when we struggle to articulate our prayers. The Holy Spirit acts as our Comforter, providing solace during times of distress, such as the loss of a loved one or a job. In pastoral experiences, it is evident how the Holy Spirit’s comforting presence can transform despair into joy. For instance, individuals grappling with grief or disappointment often find themselves uplifted, singing praises to God after invoking the Spirit’s ministry of comfort. This transformative power of the Holy Spirit not only restores hope but also creates an atmosphere conducive to divine intervention, leading to rejoicing and renewed faith in God’s faithfulness.

I recall an incident involving a woman approximately a decade ago who was employed at an IT firm in Victoria Island, Lagos. At that time, I was serving as a pastor at Daystar. During our conversation, she expressed her frustrations quite vehemently, even resorting to rudeness. She proclaimed her financial contributions to the church, stating, “Pastor, I pay my tithe here, I support this ministry, and I have made vows.” Her tone suggested a deep-seated discontent, and she questioned the fairness of her situation, implying that her sacrifices were not being acknowledged. Despite my attempts to calm her and provide scriptural reassurance, the conversation did not conclude positively, as she ultimately left in a huff. A few months later, I learned that she had changed jobs multiple times, eventually securing a position at Shell, which was a significant advancement from her previous role where she was earning a meager salary.

This experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of recognizing the divine plan for our lives, even amidst trials and frustrations. It is essential to engage with the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, who possesses insight into our destinies and futures, unlike the adversary, who can only speculate. The scripture emphasizes that what God has prepared for those who love Him is beyond human comprehension, yet it is revealed to us through the Spirit. Therefore, it is prudent to cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit, who has been intricately involved in the planning of our futures, rather than allowing ourselves to be swayed by the uncertainties presented by the enemy. In moments of doubt and confusion, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit can illuminate our paths and help us understand the greater purpose behind our struggles.

The Holy Spirit serves as both a comforter and an advocate, guiding us through our spiritual journey. He plays a crucial role in affirming our identity as children of God, as indicated in the Scriptures. The assurance of our salvation and our relationship with God is deeply rooted in the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. As stated in Romans 8:15, we have not been given a spirit of fear or bondage, but rather the spirit of adoption, which allows us to cry out “Abba, Father.” This term, which translates to “my father,” signifies a profound intimacy and personal connection with God, highlighting the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Understanding our salvation is intricately linked to the work of the Holy Spirit, who continually reassures us of our standing before God. The Spirit communicates with our conscience, providing the necessary conviction that we are indeed saved. This divine presence accompanies us in our daily lives, offering guidance and support, especially in moments when we feel powerless. It is through this relationship with the Holy Spirit that we experience true freedom and the ability to engage with God on a deeply personal level, affirming our identity as His beloved children.
