Throughout the month of July, we have been exploring a series of messages under the banner “God at Work,” during which we have engaged in prayer and shared various insights. Her delivery of God’s word was truly inspiring, and I invite you to join me in expressing gratitude for her efforts.
In our exploration of “The Holy Spirit and Me,” we draw upon Philippians 2:12-13, which states, “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. My experiences in the boarding house were pivotal, and while I acknowledge the potential challenges, I also recognize the positive aspects of that environment. It is crucial, however, to ensure that children are sufficiently mature to navigate such settings. My journey began with a rocky start, but it ultimately led to a positive outcome. In the boarding house, I formed a close-knit group of friends, and one of them, who returned from a visit home with a substantial amount of money, became a significant influence on me. This sparked a competitive drive within me, as I felt compelled to surpass his achievements. However, it was during this time that I truly understood the transformative power of faith when the Holy Spirit captured my heart and redirected my path.

Jesus stated that He would petition the Father to send another Helper, a Comforter who embodies various roles such as counselor, intercessor, advocate, strengthener, and standby. This Helper is intended to remain with us eternally, providing support and guidance throughout our lives. Embracing this promise can significantly alter our approach to challenges, as we recognize that we are not alone in our struggles; rather, we have divine assistance available to us at all times.
It is essential to grasp the context in which Jesus spoke these words. He was addressing his disciples with the understanding that he would soon be departing from them. Picture a scenario where I am speaking to a group of about twelve individuals seated in the front row, representing my disciples. I would convey to them that I am relocating to a distant place, such as Australia, and that they would not see me again. However, I would assure them that I would send someone in my stead. For instance, if I were to announce to this entire congregation that I have received a new calling in New Zealand, I might introduce one of my colleagues, such as Pastor Ttunde, Pastor Emanuel, Pastor Deji, or Pastor Lulu, as my successor. This situation would evoke a range of emotions, as the congregation would reflect on the various roles I have played in their lives—be it as a pastor, a friend, a prophet, or a prayer partner.
In this hypothetical scenario, the congregation would likely respond with well-wishes, expressing their blessings for my journey to New Zealand while simultaneously acknowledging their contentment in Lagos. This reaction mirrors the sentiments of the disciples when Jesus informed them of his impending departure. Conversely, if your experiences with male supervisors have been less than favorable, you may find yourself hoping for a female replacement. This instinct to seek clarity about the new supervisor’s identity reflects a broader human tendency to associate past experiences with future expectations.

This is distinct from “heteros parakletus,” which would imply a helper of a different kind. He reminded them of the miracles He had performed, such as reviving Lazarus, emphasizing that the new Comforter would possess the same divine power to bring life and restoration to what may seem lifeless or hopeless.
