This month, our outreach initiatives are designed to emphasize the importance of nurturing a spirit of humility, encouraging us to adopt a posture of servitude. A poignant example of this is found in the actions of Jesus, who, in one of his final acts, washed the feet of his disciples. This act was not merely a ritual but a profound demonstration of what it means to live a Christian life. By girding himself with a towel, a symbol of servitude in his time, Jesus illustrated the role of a servant, which was particularly significant in a culture where wealthy individuals employed servants to perform the task of washing the feet of their guests. This was a necessary practice in the arid climate where people traveled dusty roads, and the act of washing feet was a mark of hospitality and respect.
The exchange between Jesus and Peter further highlights the transformative nature of this act. Peter’s initial resistance to having his feet washed stemmed from a misunderstanding of the servant-leader dynamic; he believed that such an act was beneath Jesus, who he viewed as his superior. However, Jesus countered this notion by asserting that unless Peter allowed him to wash his feet, he could not be part of their shared mission. This moment serves as a powerful reminder that true leadership often requires humility and a willingness to serve others, regardless of one’s status. As Christians, we are called to reflect on our own willingness to step down and serve, whether it be in our communities or in the broader context of humanity. Embracing this call to service is essential to our faith and the advancement of God’s kingdom.
Jesus articulated that the path to true greatness lies in servitude, emphasizing that those who aspire to be the greatest must first become the servants of all. The Elevation Church is dedicated to making greatness accessible to everyone, and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is by encouraging collective service. Engaging in acts of service allows individuals to unlock their potential and witness the unfolding of greatness within themselves, often leading to a sense of astonishment at their own capabilities. This morning, I would like to delve into the numerous benefits of service, drawing insights from the biblical account found in 2 Kings chapter 4, beginning at verse 8, which recounts the story of the prophet Elisha and a notable woman from Shunem.
In this narrative, we observe the profound impact of service through the actions of a distinguished woman who was far from ordinary. Her ability to provide hospitality to Elisha, a holy man of God, illustrates her exceptional status, as she possessed the means to construct a dedicated space for him within her home. This notable woman recognized the significance of Elisha’s presence and took the initiative to create a comfortable environment for him, demonstrating her commitment to service. As we explore this passage further, it becomes evident that her actions not only benefited Elisha but also enriched her own life, highlighting the reciprocal nature of service. Let us take a moment to encourage one another by affirming that it is indeed time to serve, as we reflect on the lessons embedded in this powerful story.
Whenever he visited, he would often retreat to the upper room, where he would lie down and rest. On one particular day, he instructed his servant Gehazi to summon the Shunamite woman. Upon her arrival, she stood before him, and he inquired through Gehazi about her well-being, acknowledging her consistent kindness and care towards them. Elisha, recognizing the depth of her generosity, offered her a unique opportunity, akin to receiving a blank check from God, suggesting that she could request anything she desired. This metaphorical blank check represented the profound relationship she had cultivated with the divine, allowing her to ask for assistance or favor in her life.
Elisha, having established himself as a prominent prophet with significant influence, had the ability to intercede on her behalf with powerful figures such as the king and the commander of the army. His reputation as a spiritual leader was formidable, as he had performed numerous miracles and carried a double portion of Elijah’s anointing, which further amplified his authority. When he presented the Shunamite woman with the opportunity to request anything, it was as if he were saying he could leverage his connections for her benefit. However, she humbly responded that she was content with her life among her own people, indicating her satisfaction with her circumstances and her lack of desire for further intervention or assistance.
The conversation revealed a profound concern for the well-being of both the woman and Gehazi, who, despite his flawed character, played a pivotal role in the unfolding events. Gehazi, acknowledging the woman’s plight, informed the prophet Elisha that she was childless and her husband was advanced in age. Elisha then summoned her, and as she stood at the doorway, he proclaimed that within a year, she would embrace a son. The woman, however, expressed her disbelief, cautioning Elisha not to raise her hopes with false promises. Her previous disappointments had made her wary, and she conveyed her contentment with her circumstances, even if they meant remaining childless. Yet, despite her reservations, the prophecy came to fruition, and she conceived and bore a son at the appointed time, as foretold by Elisha.
This narrative underscores the woman’s deep connection to the divine, illustrating that her affection for the prophet stemmed from her love for God. It is essential to recognize that genuine love for God’s messengers is rooted in a profound love for God Himself. The woman’s actions went beyond mere hospitality; she demonstrated a commitment to ensuring the prophet’s comfort and effectiveness in his ministry. The scripture highlights that she provided not only a place for Elisha to rest but also essential items that would facilitate his mission. Her selfless dedication exemplifies a true servant’s heart, one that prioritizes the needs of God’s work and the well-being of His representatives, thereby reflecting her unwavering faith and devotion to the divine purpose.
When individuals embark on a job search, they often become acutely aware of the various incentives that employers offer to attract talent. Human Resources professionals frequently curate attractive benefit packages, enhancing them based on the candidate’s background and expectations. This strategic padding of compensation packages is designed to entice potential employees, who are typically drawn to the allure of benefits such as company cars, travel allowances, and exclusive memberships. The promise of flying first class or enjoying other luxurious perks can lead individuals to make job changes for seemingly trivial reasons, driven primarily by the appeal of these material advantages.
In contrast, the rewards of serving God transcend mere material benefits and offer a deeper fulfillment that outlasts temporal gains. When divine intervention occurs in an individual’s life, it often addresses profound needs that may remain unspoken, revealing a level of contentment that surpasses worldly possessions. God understands the innermost desires of our hearts, including those hidden longings we may not share with others. For many, the key to unlocking significant breakthroughs lies in prioritizing their relationship with God and actively seeking opportunities to contribute to His kingdom, rather than focusing solely on personal or familial welfare. This shift in perspective is essential for spiritual growth, as emphasized in Matthew 6:33, where Jesus instructs believers to seek the kingdom of God first, promising that all other necessities will follow.
The concept of additions implies that certain elements are supplementary rather than central to the core message.
When discussing the essence of what is released from heaven, it is crucial to recognize that this divine provision is accessed through the pursuit of the kingdom. Jesus emphasized the importance of prioritizing the kingdom by stating, “Seek ye first the kingdom.” Throughout our lives, we engage in various activities that contribute positively to humanity, which undoubtedly pleases God. However, it is essential to reflect on our specific contributions toward advancing the kingdom. Jesus proclaimed His intention to build His church, assuring us that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Therefore, we must consider our roles in fostering the kingdom, not merely in terms of physical structures but in ways that actively promote and expand the reach of the gospel of peace. Ultimately, the gospel serves as humanity’s beacon of hope, prompting us to evaluate our individual involvement in the mission of the Kingdom.
While many individuals engage in humanitarian efforts, which are commendable, it is vital to intertwine these actions with the proclamation of the gospel. For instance, I am a member of my alumni association from Government College Ibadan, a prestigious institution. Recently, during a significant anniversary celebration, I received communications regarding contributions to support the school. Despite being recognized as a prominent figure, I humbly questioned the classification of my status within my class. Nevertheless, our collective efforts are directed toward meaningful projects, such as the renovation of the ICT lab, which we plan to officially inaugurate in September. This initiative exemplifies how we can blend our commitment to humanitarian causes with the overarching goal of advancing the gospel, ensuring that our actions resonate with the mission of the Kingdom.
Engaging in various activities is a common practice among us, particularly for those who are members of different clubs. While these endeavors may bring a sense of fulfillment and joy, they remain incomplete without the essential elements that contribute to the salvation of souls and the transformation of human hearts. The true essence of the kingdom lies in the renewal and regeneration of the human spirit. It is important to recognize that God appreciates our efforts, as illustrated by the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized the significance of caring for those in need. He stated that neglecting to visit the imprisoned, clothe the naked, or assist the homeless reflects a lack of compassion that is contrary to the values of the kingdom.
I envision a future, not too distant, where our church will take significant steps to provide housing for the homeless, a venture that is not commonly undertaken in our community. We are already in the process of saving funds for this initiative, and I have observed interest from a few individuals who share this vision. Our commitment to this cause is evident, as we have begun to allocate resources towards it. I firmly believe that this project will come to fruition within the next few years, as our efforts to set aside funds have been met with divine affirmation. It is crucial that our actions reflect our dedication to promoting the kingdom of God, not merely as a means of showcasing our goodwill, but as a genuine expression of our faith. Serving the kingdom brings numerous benefits, including the promise of good health, as stated in Exodus 23:25, which assures us that serving the Lord will lead to blessings and the removal of sickness from our lives.
You are called to serve the Lord your God, and in doing so, He will bless your sustenance and remove illness from your presence. One of the profound benefits of serving God is the assurance that He is always by your side. While others may face health crises and various challenges, such as financial downturns or personal struggles, those who are dedicated to God’s kingdom experience a unique peace that transcends their circumstances. This divine assurance fosters a sense of well-being, allowing you to maintain your health even when those around you are overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. The faithfulness of God, who has called you into your vocation, guarantees that He will support you throughout your journey, providing the necessary strength and guidance to navigate life’s challenges.
Moreover, serving the purpose of the Kingdom also brings with it the promise of elevation and advancement. The story of Joseph, as recounted in Genesis, exemplifies this principle. Joseph’s journey from imprisonment to prominence illustrates how his unwavering commitment to service, even in the most trying circumstances, led to his eventual rise. While in prison, he was entrusted with significant responsibilities, demonstrating that his dedication to serving others was recognized and rewarded. This pattern of service leading to promotion is evident throughout Joseph’s life, as he consistently excelled in every role he undertook, whether in Potiphar’s house or the prison. His story serves as a powerful reminder that those who serve faithfully will ultimately be elevated, as God honors their commitment to His purpose.
Joseph faced a significant temptation, yet he firmly asserted his position by stating that while he was in charge of everything in the household, he would not act against the wishes of his master, who was the husband of the woman in question. His commitment to God was paramount, and he recognized that his life had a divine purpose that transcended momentary desires. This unwavering dedication to his faith and the kingdom of God guided his actions, even when he found himself wrongfully imprisoned due to a false accusation. In prison, Joseph encountered Pharaoh’s butler and baker, who appeared troubled. Rather than harboring bitterness or resentment towards them for their previous positions of privilege, Joseph’s heart of service compelled him to inquire about their sadness, demonstrating his innate desire to help others despite his own dire circumstances.
When the butler and baker revealed their dreams, Joseph did not seek personal gain or compensation for his assistance; instead, he humbly stated that the interpretation belonged to God. His willingness to serve without expectation opened the door to a pivotal moment in his life. By interpreting their dreams, Joseph not only provided comfort to his fellow prisoners but also laid the groundwork for his eventual connection to Pharaoh. This act of service was instrumental in changing the trajectory of his life, illustrating that serving others can lead to significant opportunities and relationships that may otherwise remain unattainable. Thus, the essence of service is not merely about fulfilling duties; it is about fostering connections that can lead to transformative experiences.
For those who find themselves single today, it is essential to pay close attention to the opportunities that may arise in your current environment, particularly in the context of service.
Engaging in activities that align with a noble purpose, whether it be for the betterment of the community or in support of a greater cause, can serve as a fertile ground for meeting potential partners. The narrative of Ruth and the account of Rebecca from the Bible illustrate this principle effectively. In Genesis 24, we encounter the story of Abraham, who, recognizing his advancing age, instructs his servant to return to his homeland to find a suitable wife for his son, Isaac. This journey is not merely a quest for companionship; it is imbued with a sense of divine purpose and intention.
Upon arriving in the city, Abraham’s servant earnestly prays for guidance, seeking a sign to identify the right woman for Isaac. His prayer, as recorded in Genesis 24:13-20, reveals a profound reliance on divine intervention. He asks for a young woman who would not only offer him water but also extend her kindness to his camels. Remarkably, before he concludes his prayer, Rebecca appears, fulfilling the very criteria he had set forth. Described as beautiful and untouched by any man, she embodies the qualities of grace and service. When the servant approaches her, her immediate response is one of generosity, exemplifying the spirit of service that he sought. This interaction underscores the notion that when one is engaged in meaningful service, opportunities for connection and partnership may manifest in unexpected yet profound ways.
The woman did not inquire about the identity of the stranger who approached her for water; rather, she begrudgingly offered her assistance, indicating a sense of obligation rather than willingness. Her demeanor suggested a reluctance to engage, as she instructed him to take the water and allow her to continue with her day. However, the significance of her offer transcended mere hospitality; it was imbued with a sense of honor. By extending this gesture, she not only provided sustenance but also elevated the act to one of respect and dignity. This principle of serving others with honor is a cornerstone of our community’s outreach efforts, particularly evident in our soup kitchens, which began in December 2010. As we prepared for our inaugural event, we made a conscious decision to treat those we served with the utmost respect, setting tables adorned with beautiful tablecloths and ensuring that every detail reflected our commitment to dignity.
In a similar vein, the narrative of the servant who approached the woman with ten camels illustrates the importance of addressing challenges head-on. The servant’s approach was strategic, presenting the issues of Abraham’s household upfront, thereby setting the stage for a meaningful interaction. The woman’s willingness to serve without complaint, despite the burdens presented, marked her as an ideal match for Isaac. This theme of loyalty and commitment is further echoed in the story of Ruth, who chose to accompany her mother-in-law Naomi back to Bethlehem, despite the hardships they faced. Ruth’s dedication to Naomi, even in the face of adversity, exemplifies the profound strength of character that is often required in service to others. Such narratives remind us of the value of honor and dignity in our interactions, reinforcing the belief that true service is rooted in respect and compassion.
Upon their arrival, Ruth expressed her desire to go to the fields the following morning to glean, ensuring that her mother-in-law would have sustenance. Orpah, the widow of Ruth’s deceased husband, chose to depart, but Ruth resolutely declared her commitment, stating that she would follow Naomi wherever she went. She pledged that Naomi’s God would be her God and that Naomi’s people would become her own. This profound dedication to her mother-in-law led Ruth to the fields, where she began to glean. The scripture notes that she happened upon the field owned by Boaz, a man of considerable wealth and significance, who was part of the lineage that would ultimately lead to Christ. Ruth’s selfless act of service positioned her in a place of divine favor, as Boaz took notice of her and was willing to pay the price to make her his wife, recognizing the shared lineage that connected them.
Had Ruth chosen to remain passive, contemplating her own needs or lamenting her situation, she might have missed the opportunity that lay before her. Instead of focusing on her own potential loneliness or the possibility of finding a new husband, her primary concern was to serve Naomi, ensuring that the elderly woman would not face her twilight years in solitude. This selfless attitude not only transformed Ruth’s circumstances but also led her to a significant relationship that would redefine her destiny. The narrative illustrates that through acts of service, individuals can uncover their true gifts and purposes, as exemplified by Queen Esther. Initially an ordinary woman, Esther was challenged by her cousin Mordecai to recognize her potential role in saving the Jewish people from destruction, highlighting that even in seemingly mundane situations, one can discover a higher calling.
Her readiness to instruct her people to fast, alongside her own commitment to do the same, exemplifies a profound act of courage and determination. She resolved to present herself before the king, fully aware of the potential consequences, stating, “If I perish, I perish.” Despite her royal status, she recognized that her life would hold little value if it did not align with her purpose. In this pivotal moment, she unearthed her destiny and sense of purpose, illustrating that it is through our service in the house of God that we often uncover hidden strengths and abilities. The divine often reveals itself in our willingness to act, as seen in the story of David, who, driven by his passion for God’s kingdom, confronted Goliath without seeking external validation or guidance.
David’s encounter with Goliath was not merely a personal battle; it was a confrontation against a threat to the very identity of Israel as God’s chosen people. While King Saul and others were paralyzed by fear, David, though young and seemingly insignificant, recognized the power he possessed. He rejected the heavy armor offered by Saul, understanding that true strength lies not in worldly defenses but in one’s own capabilities. Armed with only a sling and five smooth stones, David approached the giant, demonstrating that even the most humble resources can lead to monumental victories. His triumph over Goliath not only resolved a national crisis but also marked the beginning of his journey toward kingship, revealing that serving God’s purpose can unlock divine revelations and guide us toward our true calling.
When individuals are engaged in service roles, such as those in hotels or restaurants, they often find themselves in a position to overhear conversations that provide insight into the lives of the guests they serve. This proximity allows them to gain an understanding of the discussions taking place, which can be likened to how divine intervention occurs in our lives. It is essential to recognize that one cannot fully serve God while remaining oblivious to the personal challenges they face. God has a unique way of revealing Himself during acts of service, as illustrated in the biblical account of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. While fulfilling his duties as a priest and burning incense for the people of Israel, Zechariah, who had long struggled with barrenness, experienced a divine visitation. An angel appeared to him, proclaiming that his wife would conceive a son named John, demonstrating that in moments of dedicated service, God often intervenes to provide revelation and guidance.
Furthermore, serving God can position individuals for significant breakthroughs in their lives, as evidenced by the story of Peter in Luke chapter 5. When Jesus approached Peter while he was at the lake, He requested to use Peter’s boat to address the crowd. Peter willingly complied, allowing Jesus to preach from his vessel. After the sermon, when Peter was preparing to pack up his fishing nets, Jesus instructed him to launch out into the deep waters for a catch. This command led to an extraordinary abundance of fish, illustrating that acts of service can lead to unexpected blessings and breakthroughs. The narrative emphasizes that through service and obedience, individuals can experience transformative moments where God opens doors and provides for their needs in remarkable ways.
Peter expressed that they had exerted considerable effort throughout the night in search of a place within your life, your home, and your business. He emphasized the importance of sharing time with God and serving the purpose of the kingdom, which can lead to breakthroughs that surpass any connections, qualifications, or skills one may possess. Despite being seasoned fishermen who had worked diligently during the optimal fishing hours—when the nets would not cast reflections on the water, causing the fish to flee—they returned empty-handed. However, Peter demonstrated remarkable wisdom by deciding to cast the net once more at the command of Jesus. The outcome was extraordinary; the nets were filled to the point of breaking, and the boats began to sink, marking a breakthrough of unprecedented magnitude. This illustrates the profound impact of allowing God space in one’s life and business.
The call to action is clear: one must create space for God, akin to the examples set by Peter and the Shunamite woman. It is essential to make room for divine expression and kingdom service. Consider Obed-Edom, who welcomed the Ark of the Covenant into his home when King David hesitated due to fear of its power. Obed-Edom’s decision to house the Ark resulted in immense blessings over a mere three months, showcasing that those who invite God into their lives experience transformation beyond measure. Therefore, the imperative remains to make space for God in all aspects of life, including time, finances, and personal resources, as this commitment to service will yield remarkable results.
Creating a dedicated space for God is essential; it is important to intentionally carve out an area specifically for His presence. One should emulate the Shunamite woman, who acted out of her own free will, unencumbered by external pressures or coercion. She chose to welcome the prophet Elisha into her home, ensuring that he had all the necessities—food, a study area, and a comfortable bed. This act of hospitality was not merely a gesture but a profound commitment to serving God’s purpose. Tragically, the child that God had blessed her with fell ill and died, yet it was on the very bed she had prepared for Elisha that she laid her son. When Elisha came and laid upon the boy, he was miraculously revived. This narrative illustrates that when one receives blessings from God through the fulfillment of His purpose, those blessings are safeguarded. The individual remains connected to the source of their blessings, understanding the divine intention behind them, and can always return to God, who has the power to restore and resurrect what has been lost.
