The terms “chosen,” “royal,” and “special” carry profound meaning, suggesting that while all individuals are valued, some are designated for a unique role in God’s plan. This introspection may lead us to reassess who occupies the VIP section of our lives, potentially replacing those who have become toxic with new, uplifting individuals. God has indeed set apart His chosen people for His purposes, and it is crucial to surround ourselves with those who will support and enhance our spiritual journey.

The act of using these items, such as referring to a cup as “daddy’s cup” or a plate as “daddy’s plate,” was often met with disapproval, and in some cases, could even lead to punishment, particularly in African cultures. This notion parallels a biblical principle found in the scripture, which states that in a large household, there are various vessels, some designated for honor and others for dishonor. The scripture emphasizes that if an individual chooses to cleanse themselves from dishonorable practices, they will be sanctified and set apart for honorable use. For those who have attended a private university or are still in their youth, the experiences I am about to describe may not resonate fully.
Picture a scene where students, buoyed by the spirit of camaraderie, gather to sing and indulge in alcoholic beverages, their voices growing progressively louder as the night unfolds. These undergraduates, often sent to pursue their studies by well-meaning parents, seem to find their own unique form of enjoyment in such revelries. This particular narrative revolves around a specific university, which I shall refrain from naming to maintain discretion. The students often embark on what they refer to as “weekend gyration,” a tradition where they travel to another university for a weekend filled with palm wine, singing, and various forms of merriment, only to return, perhaps a bit worse for wear, on Sunday night or Monday morning, ready to face their academic responsibilities despite the lingering effects of their indulgence.
On one such occasion, a member of a Christian fellowship was also preparing for a journey to the same university, intending to collaborate with another missions team in a nearby village to engage in soul-winning activities. Unfortunately, this individual arrived too late to catch the bus organized by his fellowship, which had already departed. However, he found himself in the company of the Kegites, who were still waiting for their inebriated friends to arrive before they set off. As he expressed his frustration over missing the bus, one of the Kegites approached him, extending an invitation to join their group, assuring him that they too had a commitment to serve God, albeit in a different manner. After some contemplation, the individual decided to accompany the Kegites to the university, with the intention of seeking out the missions team upon arrival, hopeful that he could still fulfill his original purpose despite the unexpected detour.
As the bus journey progressed, the atmosphere became increasingly lively, with the boys energetically dancing and enjoying themselves. It was evident to anyone passing by that these were students from Kegites, reveling in their outing. However, amidst the revelry, one brother, who initially resisted the temptation, found himself swept up in the excitement. By the time they arrived at the university, he was intoxicated and had completely forgotten about his mission team responsibilities. Instead of fulfilling his role, he spent the entire weekend indulging in the festivities. While this may seem amusing to some, it was a serious matter for him and his fellow mission team members, as he ultimately became a mission field himself. The following week, they faced the challenging task of guiding him back to his faith, a situation that arose simply because he chose to join the bus without considering the potential consequences.
This experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of being vigilant about what we allow into our lives. The concept of tolerance can often be misleading, as it may lead us to accept behaviors and ideologies that are contrary to our values. When one comes to know the truth, they assume the role of a steward, safeguarding it with diligence and integrity. This stewardship requires discernment, as one must navigate the complexities of life without compromising the truth. It is essential to approach the truth with seriousness, avoiding any trivialization or manipulation that could lead to moral or spiritual peril.

In Matthew 22:36-40, when questioned about the greatest commandment, Jesus responded by emphasizing the importance of loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind, followed by the command to love one’s neighbor as oneself. While God loves humanity, He disapproves of the corrupt systems and temptations that pervade the world. Remember that God has set you apart for His purpose, and it is your responsibility to live in accordance with that calling. If you are in an environment that is detrimental to your spiritual well-being, such as living with someone who engages in harmful behaviors, it is time to earnestly pray for deliverance. Just as Pastor Debo shared his experience of seeking God’s intervention to escape a toxic living situation, you too can ask the Lord to guide you out of circumstances that threaten your integrity and spiritual growth.
