It’s Time To Reorder

IT’S TIME TO REORDER

In the narrative found in Luke chapter 10, beginning at verse 38, we encounter the poignant story of Jesus’ visit to the home of Mary and Martha. The scripture reveals that as Jesus traveled, He entered a village where Martha, a certain woman, graciously welcomed Him into her residence. Martha had a sister named Mary, who chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, attentively listening to His teachings. However, Martha found herself overwhelmed by the demands of hospitality, as indicated in verse 40, where it is noted that she was “distracted” by her many tasks. In her frustration, Martha approached Jesus, expressing her discontent that Mary had left her to manage the serving alone. She implored Jesus to instruct Mary to assist her, revealing her sense of injustice and burden.

Jesus’ response to Martha was both gentle and profound, as He addressed her by name, emphasizing her state of worry and distraction. He pointed out that while she was troubled by numerous concerns, only one thing was truly necessary, and Mary had chosen the better path by prioritizing spiritual nourishment over the demands of service. This passage serves as a rich source of reflection, highlighting the importance of our responses to challenging situations. Martha’s reaction, marked by blame towards both Jesus and her sister, illustrates a common tendency to seek fault in others when faced with stress. Instead of fostering a spirit of cooperation and understanding, her approach led to further discord. This narrative encourages us to examine our own responses in times of difficulty, urging us to adopt a more constructive and peaceful demeanor rather than resorting to accusations.

It is essential to communicate to her that, at times, taking the right course of action is necessary, especially when we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed. In such moments, it is not uncommon for individuals to direct their frustrations towards God, attributing their misfortunes to divine intervention. Some may even choose to blame others for their circumstances. There are individuals present here today, as well as those watching online, who, if asked about their greatest desire for the first quarter of the upcoming year, might express a wish for God to intervene in their professional relationships, particularly with their bosses. A more spiritually mature individual might articulate a desire for God to soften their boss’s heart, while others may harbor a more vindictive wish for God to take punitive action against their superior, hoping that such consequences would lead to greater respect and acknowledgment of their contributions.

This tendency to seek divine retribution is not limited to workplace dynamics; it extends to personal relationships as well.

For instance, some women may pray for their husbands’ businesses to face challenges, believing that such adversity will prompt their partners to become more responsible and considerate. Conversely, there are men who might find themselves wishing for their wives to experience setbacks in their careers, under the misguided belief that this would lead to greater submission and harmony within the marriage. When confronted with the question of why their relationships are faltering, these individuals often point fingers at their partners, failing to recognize that personal growth and resolution can be achieved independently of the other person’s actions. This notion resonates with the biblical account of Martha, who was taken aback when Jesus indicated that the issue at hand was not about Mary, but rather about her own perspective and choices.

It is essential to recognize that misaligned priorities can hinder our progress as we approach the new year. The purpose of gathering this morning is to encourage a re-evaluation of our lives—physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. This reordering is crucial to ensure that the most significant aspects of our lives are not overshadowed by trivial matters. Currently, many individuals find that their focus is misplaced, allowing less important concerns to dominate their attention. This misalignment can lead to a situation where vital elements of life, such as personal relationships and spiritual commitments, are neglected in favor of distractions that hold little value.

The example of Martha, who became overwhelmed by her responsibilities, illustrates how even acts of service can detract from one’s relationship with God. It is possible to become so engrossed in serving others—whether in a church setting, within the family, or in the community—that one loses sight of the foundational relationship with God. This disarray can lead to spiritual peril, as individuals may inadvertently jeopardize their salvation by allowing their service to become a distraction. Jesus emphasized the importance of prioritizing our love for God above all else, stating that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all one’s heart and mind, followed by loving one’s neighbor. This simple yet profound directive serves as a reminder that God should take precedence, followed by family and work, establishing a clear hierarchy that fosters a balanced and fulfilling life.

It is acknowledged that numerous factors exist, and time constraints prevent a thorough exploration of all these elements. Some may inquire about the role of extended family or the appropriate placement of parents within one’s life. While arrangements can be made for such family members, it is essential to prioritize one’s immediate family, particularly if one is currently unmarried. The hierarchy of responsibilities should be clear: God takes precedence, followed by oneself, family obligations, and friendships, with work positioned beneath these priorities. This raises a critical question regarding the nature of work itself—should it be viewed merely as a means to an end or as an end in itself? The purpose of work is to enhance one’s quality of life, and if life becomes disordered despite financial success, one must reflect on the true value of that success. It is imperative to maintain focus on fulfilling one’s purpose and engaging in vocations that empower personal growth and provide necessary resources, rather than allowing work to dictate one’s existence.

From the discussion thus far, it is evident that significant introspection is required. Individuals must confront the questions surrounding their grievances, particularly regarding events from the past year. Who is being held accountable for the disappointments experienced in 2018? Are there lingering feelings of resentment towards others, similar to Martha’s blame directed at Mary and God for perceived injustices? It is possible that some listeners harbor bitterness over missed opportunities, such as a promotion, attributing their frustrations to a supervisor they perceive as obstructive. However, it is crucial to consider whether one is truly examining their own life and making necessary adjustments. The call to action is clear: one must take responsibility for their circumstances and strive to reorder their life in a manner that aligns with their true purpose and values.

In every phase of life, there exists a singular focus that can significantly alter our circumstances, prompting us to reassess our priorities and the individuals we hold accountable. Reflecting on the teachings of Jesus regarding Mary, it becomes evident that each season presents us with a critical choice—an opportunity to concentrate on what truly matters. To effectively navigate the complexities of life, it is essential to grasp the underlying purpose of each season and identify what should take precedence. For instance, as we approach the year 2019, it may be imperative for some individuals to devote more attention to their children, particularly if they are at a pivotal developmental stage. Neglecting this crucial time could lead to long-lasting regrets, emphasizing the importance of being present and engaged during these formative years.

As we transition into 2019, it is vital to maintain clarity regarding our priorities in light of the season we are experiencing. When faced with decisions, such as a job offer that requires extensive travel versus one that allows for greater presence at home, understanding the significance of our current circumstances can guide our choices. If the focus is on nurturing relationships, whether with children or within a young marriage, it becomes clear that certain opportunities may not align with our immediate priorities. A successful marriage, much like any worthwhile endeavor, demands intentional investment and effort; it is not a guarantee but rather a result of conscious dedication. By recognizing the importance of prioritizing relationships during this season, we can make informed decisions that foster growth and fulfillment in our lives.

In certain seasons of life, it becomes essential to focus on nurturing your marriage, yet one may find themselves drawn to individual pursuits such as traveling or embarking on personal adventures. This inclination to prioritize various activities over the foundational relationship can lead to an imbalance that detracts from the essential connections in life. Reflecting on the biblical account of Jesus visiting Martha and Mary, it is evident that Jesus emphasized the importance of recognizing the purpose of the moment. He pointed out that while Martha was preoccupied with hospitality and meal preparation, Mary chose to sit at His feet, absorbing the wisdom and grace He offered. This interaction illustrates that in times of spiritual significance, the focus should shift from mundane tasks to deeper, more meaningful engagements.

As we approach a new year, it is crucial to assess and realign our priorities according to the season we are in. Each phase of life presents unique opportunities and challenges that require discernment to understand what should take precedence. The call to reflect on one’s purpose and the current season is vital, as distractions can easily arise when clarity is lacking. The adage that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop serves as a reminder that without a clear focus, one may become susceptible to diversions that lead away from fulfilling one’s true potential. Therefore, as we enter 2019, it is imperative to seek understanding of our priorities and to ensure that our actions align with the divine purpose set before us.

A man who fails to recognize the significance of his current phase in life and remains idle, with his priorities misaligned, is inadvertently inviting temptation from negative influences. This individual lacks clarity regarding his focus and purpose, making him susceptible to distractions that can lead him astray. It is essential to have a clear understanding of one’s objectives and the season of life one is navigating. Each person may have a unique timeline for what is essential, whether it be a matter of one year or several years. Identifying and prioritizing this singular need is crucial for personal growth and fulfillment.

As I reflect on my own life, I am acutely aware of the passage of time, particularly as my daughters grow older; my eldest recently turned 14, while my younger daughter is now 12. This realization prompts me to prioritize spending quality time with them and nurturing my relationship with my wife. It is becoming increasingly evident that once our daughters leave home, we must not find ourselves merely coexisting without a meaningful connection. I recall a story shared by a friend about an elderly couple who, despite their age, demonstrated a deep bond through simple acts of care and companionship. This serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cultivating relationships, as neglecting to do so may leave one feeling isolated and disconnected in the future.

It is essential to recognize that the notion of sharing intimate moments, such as having someone cut your toenails while you enjoy a meal together, is not a spontaneous occurrence that simply materializes as one ages. Wisdom suggests that such experiences require intentionality and mindfulness; they do not automatically manifest in one’s sixties or seventies. The image of a future where I can share leisurely hours with a partner, indulging in a good series while being cared for, remains vivid in my mind. This vision represents a relationship goal for me, where we can enjoy each other’s company without distractions, such as children, who are thriving in their own lives. However, achieving this ideal requires a conscious effort and a clear understanding of the life stages we navigate.

As I mentioned previously, it is crucial for individuals, particularly young men, to recognize the season of life they are in, especially when contemplating the establishment of a family. If one feels a calling towards settling down, it necessitates a reevaluation of priorities and lifestyle choices. Entering a new year while clinging to past habits, such as late nights out at clubs, is counterproductive for those aspiring to build a stable home. The adage that to become a millionaire, one must think like a millionaire applies equally to relationships; to become a committed partner, one must adopt the mindset of a married individual. This shift in perspective is vital for fostering the kind of meaningful connections that lead to lasting companionship.

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending a worship event at The Experience House On The Rock, where I share a good rapport with Pastor Paul. The atmosphere was filled with reverence as I engaged in worship, and I departed around 4 AM. As my personal assistant and I were navigating the streets of Victoria Island, we encountered a situation where someone was removing a traffic cone to allow us to park. This prompted me to reflect on the nightlife in Lagos, as I found it curious that people were still out and about at such an early hour. It struck me that there are distinct lifestyles within the city; while some individuals engage in daytime activities, others thrive in the vibrant nightlife. This dichotomy often leads to a shift in focus, where certain aspects of life may be neglected in favor of others.

For the young men among us, I want to emphasize the importance of living wisely. My intention is not to criticize those who enjoy nightlife, but rather to encourage a reevaluation of priorities. If you aspire to be a devoted family man and wish to nurture your marriage, it is essential to reconsider the frequency of your clubbing activities. Balancing a commitment to family with a lifestyle centered around nightlife is challenging and often unsustainable. I urge you to take a step back and reorder your life accordingly. Additionally, it is crucial to cultivate trust in God, recognizing that when challenges arise, the fault lies not with Him but with our own choices. Embracing this mindset can lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.

It is essential to place our trust in God, especially during moments of overwhelming stress. In such times, it is unwise to question God’s intentions or to seek explanations for our circumstances, as Martha was tempted to do when she considered asking God why Mary was not assisting her. God’s response emphasizes His eternal sovereignty, asserting that He remains God both before our existence and after we are gone. The underlying issue is not about God or Mary, but rather the disarray in our own lives. Feeling overwhelmed often indicates that we are focusing on trivial matters rather than addressing the core issues that lead to a chaotic existence. It is crucial to identify the sources of this imbalance and to confront the clutter that distracts us from what truly matters.

As we approach the new year, it is vital to take proactive steps to restore balance in our lives. Reflect on the areas where you feel discomfort or a lack of control, whether they pertain to finances, relationships, or other significant aspects of your life. Inviting God into these areas can facilitate a reordering that allows you to regain control. It is futile to gather in prayer for the upcoming year without a clear understanding of what needs to be set in order. Sometimes, it may seem as though God is not responding to our prayers, but this can stem from praying without proper guidance or from a place of disorder. The biblical account in Genesis illustrates how God brought order from chaos, beginning with the declaration of light amidst darkness. This serves as a reminder that divine intervention can transform our lives when we seek clarity and alignment with God’s will.

The concept of light symbolizes clarity and understanding, yet many individuals seek intervention without considering the principles of sustainability. As a pastor, I have come to recognize that while charitable actions are commendable, they must be approached with a long-term vision. When we initiated the PISTIS Foundation, I pursued training abroad to deepen my understanding of effective philanthropy. A pivotal resource I encountered during this journey was the book “Charity Detox,” which I highly recommend to anyone interested in charitable endeavors. This book was suggested during one of my training sessions, and I subsequently shared its insights with the manager of our foundation. We created a summary of its key points to distribute among our team members, emphasizing the importance of informed and sustainable charitable practices.

In many developing regions, there exists a pervasive mindset that external aid will miraculously resolve their challenges, leading to a reliance on temporary solutions rather than sustainable change. This mentality often manifests in desperate pleas for assistance, as individuals seek immediate relief akin to emergency responses to disasters. While it is true that some lives may appear to be in a constant state of crisis, it is crucial to recognize that the underlying issues stem from a systemic organization that perpetuates chaos and poverty. Instead of attributing blame to external factors, it is imperative to shift our focus towards sustainable solutions that foster long-term development. Just as the biblical account of creation illustrates, the initial state of the earth was one of formlessness and darkness, yet the divine response was not to merely fill the void with random acts but to establish order and purpose. This serves as a reminder that our approach to charity should similarly prioritize structure and sustainability over mere palliative measures.

It is quite common for individuals to appear in times of need, often leading to a chaotic situation regarding housing arrangements. The current state of disarray in managing house rent reflects a lack of structure and organization. When we advocate for a more systematic approach, emphasizing the importance of establishing sustainable solutions, we often encounter disinterest from many. This disinterest is a significant factor in the ongoing cycle of poverty, as it indicates a reluctance to engage in meaningful discussions about long-term solutions. As a pastor, I have reached a point where I can no longer be swayed by fleeting emotions. In the past, individuals would approach me with their concerns, and I would direct them to the appropriate resources. However, it has become evident that many are not prepared to embrace the structures we have worked diligently to establish; instead, they seem to prefer a haphazard existence, reminiscent of the unpredictable nature associated with the African deity Sango.

When we propose a structured approach to life’s challenges, the response is often one of indifference.

Many individuals are focused solely on immediate gratification, such as the need for food, rather than engaging in discussions about sustainable living. This mindset hinders progress and perpetuates disorder. Reflecting on the biblical account of creation, when God observed that the earth was formless and void, His first act was to command light into existence. This illumination is crucial, as it allows us to understand our circumstances and begin to impose order. Without light, the path to organization remains obscured. I earnestly hope that this morning, the light of divine revelation will shine upon someone, guiding them toward a more ordered and fulfilling life in the year 2019.

In the beginning, when light emerged, God proclaimed the separation of land from water, followed by the distinction between day and night. This divine order illustrates the importance of structure in creation. Imagine the chaos that would ensue if seeds were sown indiscriminately in a mixture of land and water; the outcome would yield no fruitful return. This analogy serves as a reflection of how some individuals choose to navigate their lives, devoid of the balance that day and night, land and water provide. God’s initial command was to establish light and then to create a firmament that separates the waters, emphasizing the necessity of order. It is through this structured approach that plants can flourish and humanity can thrive, highlighting the expectation that we, too, should lead our lives with intention and sustainability.

As we seek divine intervention, it is crucial to approach it with a mindset geared towards creating lasting structures that foster order and sustainability. This principle is foundational not only in our personal lives but also in the way we build our communities and businesses. By prioritizing sustainability and establishing effective frameworks, we can harness the favor and power of God to achieve our goals. If you find yourself overwhelmed in a chaotic work environment, it may be prudent to take a step back and reassess your situation. Consider making recommendations for improvement, and if necessary, contemplate taking a break at the start of the new year. Such a pause could lead to transformative opportunities that may redefine your future. Remember, we are not meant to live as slaves to our circumstances; instead, we should be open to the plans that God has in store for us, even if it means leaving behind unfavorable environments.

Understanding the divine plan for one’s life often requires a profound realization of the significance of both one’s existence and the role of a higher power. It is essential to acknowledge that life is a singular journey, and while the divine holds immense importance, so too does one’s own life. This recognition compels individuals to establish order within their lives, particularly when faced with environments that threaten to disrupt their well-being and familial stability. Many may find themselves in situations where their lives have spiraled into chaos, marked by detrimental habits or substance abuse, not merely limited to over-the-counter medications but extending to more severe dependencies. The frantic pace of life can be overwhelming, and it is crucial to prioritize personal and familial well-being over any job or external pressures that contribute to this disorder.

In moments of realization, as exemplified by Martha, the path to restoration often begins with seeking divine guidance, even if approached with a sense of frustration. It is vital to approach such moments with the right mindset, setting aside blame and focusing on personal accountability. Instead of attributing one’s struggles to external factors, individuals should seek clarity on their priorities and the steps necessary for improvement. Imagining a scenario where Martha approached Jesus with her concerns, one can envision a response encouraging her to pause and reflect rather than act impulsively. This serves as a reminder for all to seek divine wisdom in times of turmoil, asking for direction on what truly matters in their lives, rather than allowing external circumstances to dictate their path.
