WHAT IT MEANS TO BE SPIRITUAL

In Matthew 26:36, we encounter a poignant moment that captures the final hours of Jesus’ earthly ministry, particularly in the Garden of Gethsemane. This passage illustrates the profound emotional turmoil Jesus experienced as he prepared for his impending crucifixion. He arrived at Gethsemane with his disciples and instructed them to remain in one location while he withdrew to pray. Among the twelve, he chose to take with him Peter, along with the sons of Zebedee, namely James and John, indicating a level of trust and intimacy with these three. As he ventured deeper into the garden, the weight of his sorrow became evident, and he confided in them about his distress, expressing that his soul was “exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.” This moment underscores the depth of his anguish and the significance of companionship during times of profound suffering.

As Jesus shared his emotional state with his closest disciples, he urged them to stay awake and watch with him, highlighting the importance of their support during this critical juncture. By leaving nine disciples behind, he demonstrated a selective trust in Peter, James, and John, believing they could provide the vigilance he needed in his hour of need. The gravity of his words, which he reserved for those he deemed trustworthy, reflects the intimate bond he shared with these disciples. This scene not only reveals Jesus’ vulnerability but also serves as a reminder of the human need for companionship and understanding in moments of deep distress. The disciples’ subsequent failure to remain vigilant serves as a poignant contrast to the trust Jesus placed in them, emphasizing the theme of human frailty in the face of divine purpose.

He advanced a bit further, falling to the ground in prayer, expressing, “Oh My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” Upon returning to His disciples, He discovered them asleep and addressed Peter, asking, “Could you not stay awake with Me for one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.” This poignant statement emphasizes the struggle between spiritual resolve and human frailty. Let us recite that last phrase together: “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

At this critical moment, Jesus held expectations for His disciples, particularly the three who accompanied Him further into the garden. He hoped they would be able to pray alongside Him, drawing strength to endure the impending trials. Christ acknowledged His destiny to die for the redemption of humanity, recognizing the immense difficulty of this path. He understood that while the spirit is eager, the physical body often falters. To navigate this challenging situation, one must align with the spirit’s guidance. Jesus was acutely aware of His purpose, having been identified as the Lamb of God destined for sacrifice. Just as John proclaimed Him, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” Jesus was not unaware of the crucifixion that awaited Him. Similarly, those who aspire to follow Christ should have a clear vision of their own destinies, whether it be in marriage, career, or ministry, understanding the beauty and challenges that lie ahead.

In the discourse presented, it becomes evident that the essence of one’s destiny is intricately linked to the alignment of one’s spirit with divine guidance. The notion articulated suggests that to genuinely embrace and fulfill one’s purpose, it is imperative to yield to the spirit rather than succumb to the desires of the flesh. This dichotomy is underscored by the assertion that while the spirit is inherently willing and capable of achieving one’s destiny, the flesh often presents obstacles that foster doubt and reluctance. The challenge lies in recognizing that despite the inherent potential for transformation, individuals may find themselves at a crossroads, grappling with the tension between divine intention and personal limitations.

Furthermore, the struggle between the spirit and the flesh is a recurring theme in the lives of many believers, as illustrated by the reflections of Paul in the epistles. He poignantly captures the internal conflict of wanting to pursue righteousness yet frequently falling prey to contrary impulses. This ongoing battle emphasizes that the journey of walking in the spirit is fundamentally rooted in one’s thought processes. When thoughts are aligned with the teachings of scripture, individuals are empowered to walk in the spirit; conversely, when thoughts are swayed by carnal inclinations, they inadvertently walk in the flesh. Romans 8:5 serves as a pivotal reference, shedding light on the importance of mental alignment with God’s word as a precursor to spiritual living.

In the Amplified Translation of the Bible, Romans chapter 8, verse 5 articulates a profound distinction between those who live according to the flesh and those who are guided by the Spirit. It states that individuals who are influenced by their carnal desires tend to focus their thoughts on pursuits that satisfy those desires. Conversely, those who are led by the Spirit concentrate their minds on pursuits that align with the Holy Spirit’s will. This emphasis on the mindset is crucial; it underscores the significance of one’s thoughts and mental focus in shaping one’s spiritual journey and ultimate destiny. The scripture suggests that the essence of being spiritual is rooted in the inclination of one’s mind towards spiritual matters, rather than merely external appearances or behaviors.

The notion of spirituality transcends superficial assessments based on outward appearances.

While it is commendable for individuals, particularly women, to present themselves in a manner that reflects their faith, such as dressing modestly, true spirituality is not defined by these external factors. The scripture indicates that a genuinely spiritual person is one who actively directs their thoughts towards the things of the Spirit. This understanding challenges common perceptions, especially among young people in various fellowship settings, who may mistakenly equate outward conformity with spiritual authenticity. It is essential to recognize that genuine spirituality is determined by the internal disposition of the heart and mind, rather than mere adherence to societal or cultural standards of appearance.

There exists a group of individuals referred to as “brethren,” often affectionately shortened to “Bre.” When one encounters a “Bre” on their way to class in the morning, it is common to observe them carrying a book, typically a spiritual text or a Bible. In their earlier days, these texts might have been wrapped in newspaper for protection, but as they mature in their faith, they display a newfound confidence, carrying their books openly. They walk with a certain ethereal grace, akin to disembodied spirits. When greeted, their response is often a simple blessing, and they continue on their path. In contrast, others among us may be more exuberant, greeting everyone we encounter, regardless of their attire or lifestyle choices. We engage with all, from those who identify as part of a cult to individuals smoking cigarettes, embracing a sense of freedom in our interactions.

While I identify as born again, I recognize that spirituality transcends mere appearances or social interactions. It is not solely about whom I choose to greet or how I present myself; rather, it is fundamentally rooted in the Word of God that resides within me and the thoughts I cultivate. This understanding aligns with the teachings found in Proverbs 4:20-23, which emphasizes the importance of focusing on divine wisdom and guarding one’s heart, as it is the source of life’s issues. Therefore, I encourage you to engage with your neighbor this morning and reflect on the origins of your thoughts. Consider asking them where they source the raw materials for their mental and spiritual reflections, as this inquiry can lead to profound insights about our inner lives.

The reality is that individuals engage in a multitude of thoughts throughout an average day, with some highly active individuals generating as many as 1,000 thoughts daily.

This cognitive activity is influenced by one’s level of engagement, as the mind can shift focus every few seconds. However, it is crucial to consider the sources from which these thoughts originate, as they play a significant role in shaping our actions. Thoughts are the precursors to actions, and when these actions are repeated, they form habits. Ultimately, these habits define our character and influence our destiny. Therefore, the essence of who we are becoming is rooted in our thoughts.

To illustrate this point, consider the implications of habitual behavior. For instance, one cannot consistently engage in deceitful behavior and claim to be honest; such actions solidify the identity of a liar. The key question then becomes how one can transform into a person who embodies honesty. This transformation is central to our discussion today, as it aligns with the biblical principle found in Romans 12:2, which encourages believers to avoid conformity to worldly standards and instead pursue a renewal of the mind. This renewal is essential for achieving alignment with divine principles, particularly concerning critical aspects of life such as finances, relationships, and business. It prompts us to reflect on whether our thoughts in these areas are consistent with the teachings of the Word of God or merely sporadic considerations.

It is essential to recognize that one’s actions are often dictated by the prevailing thoughts influenced by the word of God. When faced with various situations, if the teachings of scripture do not guide your mindset, you may find yourself simply reacting to circumstances rather than responding with intention. This truth underscores the importance of aligning our thoughts with divine principles, as such alignment can lead to transformative changes in various aspects of life, from financial matters to personal relationships. The journey toward meaningful change begins with a shift in perspective, emphasizing that even the most significant transformations are rooted in the way we think.

This morning, I urge you to reconsider the sources from which you derive your thoughts. It is crucial to avoid negative influences, such as certain popular music that permeates social gatherings, which can detract from a spiritually enriching mindset. Recently, I attended a wedding where the atmosphere was filled with music that, while entertaining, did not contribute positively to my thoughts. Upon arriving at such events, I often find myself compelled to offer a prayer or share a few words, after which I quickly retreat to avoid the mental clutter that can arise from the music played. The scripture in John 6:63 reminds us that the words of God are not merely text but are imbued with spiritual significance, offering life and vitality to our spirits. For those seeking a deeper connection with the divine, it is through the word of God that one can cultivate a life filled with purpose and balance.

A week has passed without engaging with the Bible, yet you have been inundated with various forms of music, news, and other distractions. This imbalance inevitably influences your thoughts and mindset, leading to a spiritual stagnation that is detrimental to your growth as a believer. It is essential to recognize that a life pleasing to God cannot be achieved under such circumstances, as you have not positioned yourself to receive His guidance and wisdom.

The adversary seeks to divert your attention from the Word of God through an array of distractions, worries, and cares of this world, aiming to keep you as far removed from spiritual nourishment as possible.

Many individuals may express feelings of overwhelming depression, claiming that they are unable to pray or read the Bible, which signifies the adversary’s success in his mission. When one reaches a point of despair where even the simplest acts of faith seem impossible, it becomes evident that the enemy has achieved his goal. The persistence of worry and anxiety is a direct result of being distanced from the Word of God, which is the source of spiritual strength and clarity. The Scriptures remind us that the universe was created through God’s Word, emphasizing its foundational role in all that exists. While attending church, one may encounter a diverse congregation, with some equating spirituality to the volume and fervor of their prayers. Although passionate prayer is commendable, it is crucial to discern that true spirituality transcends mere outward expressions, as many exuberant displays may lack genuine spiritual substance.

It is essential to recognize that, at times, the discomfort we experience may simply be attributed to gas rather than any spiritual disturbance. Many individuals may claim that a spiritual presence is at work, but I assert that the truth often lies in the mundane. Ultimately, the essence of spirituality is not merely found in the external expressions or gatherings, but rather in the alignment of one’s thoughts with the teachings of the Scriptures. When I consciously align my thoughts with the Word of God, I cultivate a deeper spiritual connection. The biblical passage from Isaiah 55 emphasizes this notion, illustrating that God’s ways and thoughts are vastly different from ours. The closer we align our thoughts with His, the more we embody His essence and approach a true spiritual existence.

While motivational and inspirational talks can serve a purpose, they must not overshadow the foundational importance of Scripture. The Bible reminds us that while the grass may wither and flowers may fade, the Word of God remains eternal and unfulfilled. True transformation and the realization of one’s divine potential are rooted in the teachings of the Bible. Although I appreciate the value of motivational discourse, it is crucial to prioritize the Word of God as the primary source of guidance and strength. To truly fulfill one’s destiny, one must remain anchored in the Scriptures, allowing them to inform and shape one’s thoughts and actions.
