ANYBODY CAN LEAD

Today marks the beginning of a new series of teachings that we have titled ‘Akpos the influencer everyone can lead’. It is a moment of gratitude as we gather to praise God, especially for those who are joining us from outside of Nigeria. Akpos, although just a generic name, holds a special place in the hearts of many. Originating from the Niger Delta region, it is unclear whether it is a shortened version of a name in Itsekiri or Ijaw. However, when you search online, you will come across numerous humorous anecdotes and jokes associated with Akpos.

Akpos has become a symbol representing the average person on the streets of Nigeria. It is fascinating how this name has evolved to embody the essence of the common man. Just the other day, I was browsing the internet and stumbled upon a plethora of Akpos jokes that left me in stitches. One particular category that caught my attention was the ‘Akpos definitions’. These definitions humorously redefined various terms and concepts in a way that only Akpos could.

Allow me to share a joke with you that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Akpos. It revolves around Akpos receiving a birthday message from his girlfriend filled with abbreviations like HBD, LLNP, LYSM, TTYL. Perplexed by the abbreviations, Akpos sought clarification from his girlfriend. Upon learning their meanings, Akpos decided to create his own abbreviation, TFY, which he humorously explained as ‘Thunder Fire You’. This anecdote showcases the wit and humor that Akpos brings to everyday situations, making him a relatable figure to many. Akpos’ unique way of navigating through life and creating his own abbreviations truly sets him apart as a representation of the streets.

The significance of leadership cannot be overstated, which is why the topic is being brought up at this particular moment. The series is aptly titled ‘Anybody can lead – a case for leadership’, with the first message focusing on this theme. Drawing inspiration from Isaiah chapter 9, verse 16, the importance of leadership is underscored from a scriptural perspective. It is crucial to highlight that for those who profess faith in Christ Jesus, belief in the infallibility and sanctity of the holy Scriptures is paramount. The absolute nature of God’s word leaves no room for ambiguity when it comes to the subject of influence and leadership.

The assertion that everything hinges on leadership, as famously stated by leadership expert John Maxwell, is a sentiment echoed throughout human history. The biblical passage in Isaiah further reinforces this notion by highlighting the detrimental impact of misguided leadership. When leaders lead astray, the consequences are dire, leading to the neglect of the vulnerable in society. The passage paints a grim picture of the repercussions of poor leadership, emphasizing the need for responsible and ethical leadership that aligns with God’s principles of justice and compassion.

The passage from Isaiah serves as a stark warning about the dangers of ineffective leadership, which can result in societal decay and moral degradation. The imagery of God’s displeasure towards those who lead others astray underscores the gravity of the issue. It serves as a reminder that leadership is not just a position of authority but a sacred responsibility that carries immense weight and consequences. As individuals entrusted with leadership roles, it is imperative to heed the lessons from scripture and strive to embody the virtues of integrity, compassion, and wisdom in guiding others.

The current situation in Nigeria is quite concerning, with various issues causing unrest and division among the people. There is a sense of anarchy in some parts of the country, with conflicts arising between different tribes and communities. The recent threat that was issued only adds to the tension, and it is clear that something is amiss when one tribe starts to threaten another. This kind of discord and conflict is a clear indication of a lack of effective leadership, as mentioned in the Bible. The scripture highlights the consequences of poor leadership, which leads to the destruction of those who are being led astray. This has resulted in a widespread cry for credible leadership, not only in the church and government but also in the corporate sector and within families.

The need for strong and credible leadership is evident across all sectors, as blame games and distractions have become commonplace. From the church to the mosque, government, and business sector, there is a tendency to shift blame onto others rather than addressing the root cause of the issues. It is crucial to recognize that everything, without exception, hinges on effective leadership. In the church, there is a tendency to prioritize spirituality over leadership, while in politics, the focus is often on appeasing the masses rather than providing strong and decisive leadership. This lack of focus and accountability has led to a situation where the people are easily distracted, much like the personality of a sanguine individual. Nigeria, as a nation, seems to be easily swayed and lacks the necessary focus on important matters.

The current state of affairs in Nigeria calls for a shift towards credible and effective leadership that can address the underlying issues and bring about unity and progress. It is essential for leaders to rise above the blame game and distractions, and instead, focus on providing the guidance and direction that the country desperately needs. This applies not only to the government but also to the church, corporate sector, and families. The younger generation is particularly vocal about the need for credible leadership, and it is crucial for the nation to heed this call and work towards a more unified and focused approach. Only through strong and accountable leadership can Nigeria overcome its current challenges and move towards a brighter and more stable future.

It is possible that we may find ourselves among the top 5 when it comes to adapting to social media platforms. This is particularly true when considering the number of people actively engaged on social media in Nigeria. However, it is important to note that this level of engagement is not universal across all countries. In some places, it may seem as though platforms like Instagram and Facebook do not even exist. For instance, during a recent visit to Kenya, I encountered pastors with significant followings on social media, some of whom I am connected with on various platforms where I have a substantial number of followers.

The presence of strong leadership within a home or a church is crucial in establishing a clear vision and direction for the future. A family with a shared vision that transcends individual members, including parents and children, provides a sense of purpose and unity. Similarly, in a church setting, a vision that extends beyond the current leaders to encompass all members serves as a unifying force. It is not about the individual leader, whether it be a Senior Pastor, lead pastor, pope, or bishop, but rather about the collective assignment and vision that guides the entire community towards fulfilling God’s purpose.

In the absence of effective leadership, chaos can ensue, leading to a lack of vision and direction. Just as the Bible speaks of God bringing light to dispel darkness and establish vision in the creation story, leadership plays a crucial role in illuminating the path forward. Vision serves as a rallying point for individuals to come together, whether in a nation, a church, or a family. Without this guiding vision, there is a risk of aimless wandering and disarray. Therefore, strong and visionary leadership is essential for guiding and unifying communities towards a common goal.

The concept of a rallying point is crucial in any situation where there is chaos or confusion. It serves as a focal point that brings clarity and direction to individuals or groups. Before any action can be taken, there must be a source of light, a vision that everyone can see and rally around. This vision becomes the foundation for leadership to emerge and guide others towards a common goal. Whether it is in personal life, business, or any other area, the presence of chaos signals the need for strong leadership and a clear vision to navigate through the challenges.

When faced with chaos or uncertainty, it is essential to take a moment to assess the situation and identify the areas that require leadership. Chaos can manifest in various forms, such as emotional turmoil, conflicts in relationships, or challenges in professional settings. In such moments, it is important to recognize the need for leadership to bring order and direction. By acknowledging the chaos and embracing the call for leadership, individuals can begin to take control of their emotions and actions, paving the way for positive change and growth.

As a counselor or therapist, the role of shedding light on emotions and behaviors is crucial in helping individuals gain leadership over their internal struggles. By identifying and understanding one’s emotions, individuals can begin to take charge of their responses and make informed decisions. Leadership in managing emotions involves recognizing the root causes of negative feelings and addressing them with clarity and purpose. Through self-awareness and guidance, individuals can navigate through chaos and emerge as leaders of their own emotions, relationships, and lives. Remember, everything rises and falls on leadership, and embracing this truth can lead to personal growth and transformation.

In situations where there is a lack of effective leadership, chaos is bound to ensue. However, the consequences of bad leadership extend far beyond mere disorder. Bad leaders often have a hidden agenda, one that seeks to oppress, repress, and subvert the destinies of those they are meant to lead. This insidious agenda is designed to stifle progress and perpetuate a cycle of negativity and destruction. History is replete with examples of such leaders, whose names are synonymous with tyranny and oppression. One such notorious figure is Adolf Hitler, whose malevolent agenda led to unspeakable atrocities and suffering. It is clear that bad leadership is not merely a matter of incompetence, but rather a deliberate and calculated effort to sow discord and despair.

The insidious nature of bad leadership is further underscored by the fact that it can have far-reaching and devastating consequences. When those in positions of authority are driven by self-serving motives and a desire for control, the entire nation suffers. Instead of fostering positive advancement and growth, poor leadership creates a climate of failure and stagnation. This is evident in the breakdown of systems and the erosion of trust in institutions. Even in religious contexts, bad leadership can have a detrimental impact, as evidenced by Jesus’ condemnation of the Scribes and Pharisees in the book of Matthew. Their hypocritical and manipulative practices led to spiritual decay and the perversion of their followers’ faith. It is evident that the effects of bad leadership are not confined to a particular domain, but rather permeate every aspect of society.

The pervasiveness of bad leadership underscores the urgent need for a concerted effort to counteract its influence. It is imperative that individuals of integrity and moral fortitude step forward to assume positions of leadership, in order to steer the nation and its people towards a brighter future. This requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of the common good. Moreover, it necessitates a collective rejection of the toxic ideologies and destructive agendas perpetuated by bad leaders. By upholding the principles of justice, compassion, and ethical governance, it is possible to mitigate the impact of bad leadership and pave the way for positive transformation. Ultimately, the eradication of bad leadership is not only a matter of political or institutional reform, but a moral imperative that demands the active participation of every citizen.

t is crucial to seek God’s guidance and discernment when navigating through different spaces in life. Not every space is meant for us, and not every job is the right fit. Understanding that there are certain places where we have the power to influence and others where we do not, is essential. God may send us to specific places to make an impact, but there are also environments that are beyond our capabilities. Recognizing this distinction early on is beneficial, as it allows us to align ourselves with God’s plan and purpose for our lives.

Many times, individuals find themselves overwhelmed in toxic environments because they fail to realize that they are agents of God, strategically placed in those spaces. It is important to acknowledge that everyone has the potential to influence others, but it requires a specific mindset, reasoning pattern, and understanding to become an effective influencer. By recognizing the unique position that God has placed us in, we can fulfill our role as influencers and make a positive impact on those around us. This realization is crucial in navigating through challenging environments and situations.

The concept of leadership is fundamental in determining one’s level of effectiveness and impact. Leadership ability plays a significant role in influencing others and shaping the environment we are in. It is essential to assess the leadership qualities within ourselves and those around us to ensure that the right individuals are in positions of influence. There is a growing need for strong leadership in various aspects of society, including churches, economies, politics, and families. By actively engaging in discussions about leadership and asking the right questions, we can contribute to creating a more positive and impactful environment wherever God has placed us.

Throughout the history of mankind, there has been no organization that has surpassed the level of leadership that we have been able to provide. This statement holds true for anyone who has been involved in running an organization, or has had experience in doing so in the past. It is essential to acknowledge the impact that effective leadership can have on the success and growth of any entity, be it a business, a family, or any other organization. While prayer and fasting are important aspects of seeking change and improvement, it is equally crucial to focus on enhancing our leadership skills and wisdom to ensure that we can effectively manage both human and material resources.

The quality of leadership within an organization plays a significant role in determining the destiny and success of the people associated with it. As mentioned in Ecclesiastes 10:16, the scripture emphasizes the importance of having capable and responsible leaders in positions of authority. It warns against the consequences of having immature or incompetent leaders who lack the necessary capacity to lead effectively. The verse highlights the significance of leadership capacity in ensuring that decisions are made at the right time and for the right reasons, rather than being driven by personal interests or shortcomings.

It is crucial for individuals in leadership roles to constantly strive to improve their leadership quotient and seek wisdom to navigate challenges and opportunities effectively. Without a strong foundation of leadership capacity, even the most fervent prayers and efforts may not lead to the desired outcomes. As the scripture in Ecclesiastes 10:16 suggests, a land or organization can face challenges and setbacks when led by individuals who lack the maturity and capacity to lead effectively. Therefore, it is imperative to focus on developing leadership skills and capabilities to ensure that organizations, businesses, and families can thrive and achieve their full potential.

When one’s leadership quotient increases, it has a ripple effect on everything around them. This concept is highlighted in Isaiah 9:16 and Ecclesiastes 10:16, where it is mentioned that the actions of leaders can impact those they lead. The scripture warns about the consequences of having immature or irresponsible leaders, emphasizing the importance of having leaders who possess the qualities of wisdom, self-control, and the ability to delay gratification. A leader’s character and behavior can either bless or curse the land they govern, influencing the overall well-being of the people under their authority.

The ability to feast at the proper time, as mentioned in Ecclesiastes, symbolizes the importance of self-discipline and moderation in all aspects of life. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of giving in to immediate gratification, similar to Esau who traded his birthright for a momentary pleasure. By exercising self-control and delaying gratification, individuals can avoid the pitfalls of indulgence and focus on long-term goals and achievements. This principle extends beyond mere physical appetites to encompass desires for fame, wealth, and other worldly pleasures.

The distinction between strength and drunkenness, as discussed in the scripture, underscores the importance of using one’s resources and abilities for productive purposes rather than mere entertainment or self-indulgence. The call to awaken to God’s calling and focus on building legacies that honor Him challenges individuals to reevaluate their priorities and motivations. By seeking strength for constructive endeavors and resisting the temptations of instant gratification, one can contribute positively to society and leave a lasting impact that transcends material wealth or fleeting pleasures. This message serves as a reminder to prioritize values of integrity, purpose, and service over superficial pursuits that ultimately lead to destruction and moral decay.

As you are present here this morning, ensure that you are attentive and focused on the message being delivered. It is common for individuals to mistakenly attribute the content of a sermon to others, such as their boss or spouse. However, it is crucial to internalize the teachings and apply them to oneself. Rather than passing on the message to someone else, take ownership of the lessons being imparted and reflect on how they can be applied to your own life. By doing so, you demonstrate a sense of responsibility and leadership in your personal growth and development.

Good leadership is indeed a miraculous quality that can greatly impact individuals and communities. The speaker emphasizes the importance of recognizing and appreciating the role of good leadership in shaping one’s life. Whether it be in a family setting, a religious institution, or on a broader scale, effective leadership can bring about positive change and foster a sense of joy and peace. By acknowledging the significance of good leadership and striving to embody its principles, one can contribute to the betterment of society and inspire others to do the same.

The speaker underscores the transformative power of good leadership and the need to uphold this quality in various aspects of life. By committing to enhancing one’s leadership skills and embracing the responsibilities that come with it, individuals can create a positive impact on those around them. Through dedication, perseverance, and a genuine desire to lead with integrity, one can cultivate an environment of growth, harmony, and success. Ultimately, good leadership is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the divine intervention of God in guiding individuals towards fulfilling their potential and purpose.

It is imperative for us, as Africans, to recognize that the miracles of divine intervention, such as opening deaf ears and blind eyes, are not the only miracles that Jesus came to perform. Jesus also came to demonstrate good leadership as a miracle. In a world where selfishness and individualism are often encouraged, Jesus showed us a different way. He emphasized that true greatness comes from serving others. By taking up a towel and a bowl to wash the feet of his disciples, Jesus exemplified humility and servant leadership. This act was particularly significant in the context of the time, where foot-washing was considered a menial task performed by servants at the door of households.

The act of washing the feet of others was a powerful symbol of humility and service. In the days when Jesus lived, transportation was limited to walking, riding animals, or using small boats. It was customary for households, especially those of the middle or upper class, to have someone at the door to wash the feet of guests. By performing this task for his disciples, Jesus challenged the traditional notions of leadership. He showed that true leadership is not about power or authority, but about serving others with humility and compassion. This act of foot-washing was a radical departure from the prevailing attitudes of the time, where leaders were often seen as distant and unapproachable.

Some may argue that they are not leaders or leadership material, but it is essential to redefine the concept of leadership. Instead of associating leadership with power and influence, we should view it as a call to serve others selflessly. Even those who may not consider themselves leaders can still have a significant impact by being influencers in their communities. Just as Jesus redefined leadership by washing the feet of his disciples, we can redefine our understanding of leadership by embracing humility, service, and self-awareness. True leadership, as exemplified by Jesus, is not about titles or positions, but about making a positive difference in the lives of others.

In the story found in Judges chapter 6, we witness the encounter between Gideon and God. Gideon, initially taken aback by being called a mighty man of valor by God, expressed doubt in his own abilities due to his background and upbringing. However, God’s message to Gideon was clear – to go forth in his strength and save Israel from their enemies. This interaction highlights the importance of recognizing the divine call on one’s life, regardless of past circumstances or personal limitations.

God’s message to Gideon serves as a powerful reminder that our backgrounds do not define our potential or purpose. Instead, it is the deposit of God within each of us that holds the key to fulfilling our destinies. Gideon’s initial reluctance and self-doubt mirror the struggles many individuals face when confronted with the call to greatness. However, God’s reassurance to Gideon emphasizes the need to focus on the present moment and the task at hand, rather than allowing past experiences to hinder progress towards a brighter future.

As aspiring leaders, it is crucial to heed the lesson from Gideon’s story and embrace the transformative power of the present. By acknowledging the past but not letting it dictate the future, we can step into the fullness of our potential and lead with confidence. Just as God saw Gideon’s potential beyond his self-perceived limitations, we too must rise above our doubts and insecurities to fulfill the divine purpose set before us. Let us take inspiration from Gideon’s journey and strive to become the leaders that God has called us to be, with a renewed mindset and unwavering faith in our ability to make a positive impact.

Viewing oneself as an influencer goes beyond personal attributes such as charisma, temperament, or social status. Leadership is not limited to individuals with specific personalities or backgrounds. The key factor that determines one’s ability to lead is their mindset. It is crucial not to disqualify oneself from leadership based on preconceived notions. Leadership is more about one’s disposition towards life rather than their position in society.

It is important to recognize that God can use anyone, regardless of their circumstances, to lead in various aspects of life, whether it be at work or within the family. Disposition plays a significant role in leadership, emphasizing the importance of one’s attitude and approach towards different situations. Economic power is not the sole determinant of one’s ability to lead; wisdom, grace, and vision are essential qualities that cannot be bought with money.

In the context of family dynamics, it is crucial to understand the concept of shared leadership between spouses. Both partners have a role to play in leading the household, with the understanding that leadership may shift based on circumstances. Communication, humility, and mutual agreement are key components in effective leadership within the family unit. It is essential to acknowledge and utilize each individual’s strengths and capabilities to lead successfully, regardless of traditional gender roles.

A key aspect of effective leadership is humility. When we look at the example set by Jesus, we see that true leadership involves stooping low and serving others. Regardless of gender, a good leader must be willing to humble themselves in order to connect with and lead those around them. Jesus demonstrated this humility in his actions and teachings, showing that leadership is not about seeking glory for oneself, but rather about serving others with a humble heart.

In addition to humility, a leader must also be spirit-led. This means being attuned to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and aligning one’s actions with the will of God. True leaders understand the importance of submitting to God’s will in their personal lives and in their leadership roles. When faced with challenges or when others are abandoning ship, a spirit-led leader relies on their faith and discernment to stay the course and lead with integrity.

As you reflect on your own leadership style, consider the sphere of influence you have and how you are using it. Every individual has the potential to lead and influence others, whether in the workplace, at home, or in the community. By leading from your sphere of influence with humility, a servant’s heart, and a spirit-led approach, you can make a positive impact on those around you. Remember, true leadership is not about seeking power or recognition, but about serving others and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

In 2 Kings Chapter 5, the story of the Syrian general named Namaan is recounted. Despite being a general, Namaan was afflicted with leprosy. The Bible describes how God began to bring solutions into his life. In verses two and three, it is mentioned that a captive young lady from the land of Israel was brought back by the Syrians and she became a househelp for Namaan’s wife. This young lady suggested to her mistress that if Namaan were with the prophet in Samaria, he would be healed of his leprosy. This shows how a slave girl had a significant influence on the general and his wife, as God had planted her there to lead and bring a solution.

The story emphasizes the idea that one can lead within their sphere of influence, regardless of their position or status. The slave girl’s suggestion had a profound impact, leading Namaan to seek out the prophet in Israel for a potential cure. Even when Namaan arrived in Israel, he had his own preconceived notions about how the miracle would occur. However, in verse 13 of 2nd Kings chapter 5, another servant was positioned to guide him in the right direction. This serves as a reminder that leadership and influence can come from unexpected sources, and one does not have to hold a position of authority to lead and make a difference.

The story of Namaan in 2 Kings Chapter 5 illustrates the power of influence and leadership within one’s own sphere. It highlights the impact of the slave girl’s suggestion and the guidance provided by another servant, demonstrating that leadership can come from unexpected places. This narrative encourages individuals to recognize their potential for influence and leadership, regardless of their age or background, and to be open to guidance from others, even when they may hold a position of authority.

There was an additional attendant present, who approached and addressed him, saying, “My father, if the prophet had instructed you to carry out a significant task, would you not have done so? How much more, then, when he simply advises you to wash and be cleansed? The prophet merely directed the man to go and wash in the Jordan, and he would be cleansed. However, the man refused, claiming that he was of high status and could not enter a dirty pool. Despite his objections, there was a leader appointed by God to guide him, who emphasized that he had the ear of someone important. This servant urged him to stop viewing himself as insignificant and to recognize that those in power are always seeking individuals who can provide guidance and direction. God will always position you beside someone who needs your influence, whether it be a person destroying their home, a man mismanaging his business, or a government official with power but lacking direction. Therefore, lift your hands and ask for help in using your influence wisely and recognizing its impact.

The servant’s words serve as a reminder that influence is not limited to those in high positions, but can also be found in everyday interactions. The ability to lead and guide others is not confined to specific roles, but is present in all aspects of life. The servant’s plea for recognition of one’s influence and the potential to lead better, starting from one’s own family, is a call to action for everyone to acknowledge their impact on those around them. By recognizing and utilizing our influence, we can make a positive difference in the lives of others, whether it be within our families, workplaces, or communities.

The servant’s message is a powerful reminder that each individual has the potential to lead and influence others, regardless of their position or status. By acknowledging and embracing this influence, we can strive to lead better and make a positive impact in the lives of those around us. Through prayer and reflection, we can seek guidance in using our influence wisely and recognize the opportunities to lead and guide others in a positive direction. This message serves as a call to action for individuals to recognize their influence and use it to lead and guide others in a positive and impactful manner.
