FOLLOW THE STAR
Matthew Chapter 2, beginning at verse 1, recounts the events following the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod. In this passage, wise men from the East arrive in Jerusalem, inquiring about the whereabouts of the one who has been born as the king of the Jews. They express their purpose for coming, stating that they have observed His star in the East and have traveled to pay homage to Him. The inquiry of these wise men deeply unsettles King Herod and the people of Jerusalem, prompting Herod to convene the chief priests and scribes to ascertain where the prophesied Christ was to be born. The religious leaders confirm that the Scriptures indicate Bethlehem of Judea as the birthplace of the Messiah, fulfilling the prophecy.
As we approach the conclusion of this year, it is essential to cultivate an awareness of the transitions that lie ahead with the arrival of a new year. Each season brings forth unique opportunities and developments, and I am convinced that the year 2020 will herald the commencement of significant changes that will extend into the next decade. It is a time for God to solidify the works He has initiated in our lives while also introducing new ventures that will shape our destinies for the next thirty years. This period calls for introspection and heightened sensitivity to the divine guidance we receive, which is the focus of my message today, aptly titled “Follow The Star.”
As we gather to commemorate the birth of our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, it is essential to recognize that the specific date of His birth, whether in December or another month, is not the focal point of our celebration. What truly matters is that we have dedicated this period to honour His arrival. Many individuals, including my grandparents, often did not know their exact birth dates and instead selected a time to celebrate based on significant events or milestones in their lives. This practice of choosing a time for celebration is entirely valid and reflects a broader understanding of the importance of commemorating meaningful occasions, regardless of the precise timing.
In our contemporary society, it is not uncommon for individuals to celebrate their birthdays on dates that differ from their actual birth dates, and this should not be a source of contention. I find it disheartening when discussions devolve into debates over biblical or historical accuracy, overshadowing the essence of our celebration. Instead, we should approach this time with sensitivity and a deep understanding of its significance. The story of the Magi, wise men from the East who were attuned to the celestial signs, serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of our surroundings and the times we live in. In an age where many are overwhelmed by the challenges of life, it is crucial to cultivate a heightened awareness and sensitivity to the world around us, rather than allowing ourselves to be consumed by the difficulties we face.

This notion points to the idea that outcomes are often determined by chance, specifically by being in the right place at the right time. However, if one acknowledges that nothing escapes God’s awareness, it becomes evident that He always operates with a purpose. The biblical account in Exodus 13 illustrates this principle; when God liberated the Israelites from Egypt, He intentionally chose not to guide them along a seemingly shorter route through the land of the Philistines. Instead, He directed them along a longer path, mindful that encountering conflict might deter them from their journey and compel them to return to their former bondage.

It is ultimately our choice to either pursue His plans or to forge our own paths, recognizing that time and chance can lead us in unexpected directions.
Every aspect of life unfolds within a designated time and season, suggesting that various experiences can lead to distinct revelations of the divine. It is essential not to disregard the different phases of your life, as each occurrence is purposeful and serves to unveil a unique aspect of God’s nature. For instance, without having faced adversity, one may struggle to grasp the concept of Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides. Similarly, without experiencing illness, the understanding of God as a healer may remain elusive. These situations are not mere coincidences; rather, they are divine opportunities for God to manifest Himself in our lives, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of His plans.

It is essential to cease the habit of attributing blame to family members, individuals you have previously assisted, religious institutions, leaders, colleagues, or anyone perceived as conspiring against you. This tendency to point fingers only serves to distract from the reality that God has a divine plan for your life. Embrace the affirmation that God has a purpose for you, and recognize that the individuals He chooses to work through may not always align with your expectations. Often, God selects those who seem unlikely or unqualified, as exemplified by the choice of Mary, a young virgin, to bear Christ. One might question why God would not opt for someone more experienced, yet it is crucial to understand that divine wisdom transcends human reasoning.
As we move forward, particularly into the new year, it is vital to seek God’s guidance and remain open to His methods, which may not always conform to our preconceived notions. The story of the Good Samaritan illustrates that God can use unexpected individuals to fulfill His purposes. Therefore, it is important to maintain flexibility in your expectations of how God may choose to act in your life.
