FOLLOW THE STAR

Matthew Chapter 2, beginning at verse 1, recounts the events following the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod. In this passage, wise men from the East arrive in Jerusalem, inquiring about the whereabouts of the one who has been born as the king of the Jews. They express their purpose for coming, stating that they have observed His star in the East and have traveled to pay homage to Him. The inquiry of these wise men deeply unsettles King Herod and the people of Jerusalem, prompting Herod to convene the chief priests and scribes to ascertain where the prophesied Christ was to be born. The religious leaders confirm that the Scriptures indicate Bethlehem of Judea as the birthplace of the Messiah, fulfilling the prophecy.

As we approach the conclusion of this year, it is essential to cultivate an awareness of the transitions that lie ahead with the arrival of a new year. Each season brings forth unique opportunities and developments, and I am convinced that the year 2020 will herald the commencement of significant changes that will extend into the next decade. It is a time for God to solidify the works He has initiated in our lives while also introducing new ventures that will shape our destinies for the next thirty years. This period calls for introspection and heightened sensitivity to the divine guidance we receive, which is the focus of my message today, aptly titled “Follow The Star.”

As we gather to commemorate the birth of our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, it is essential to recognize that the specific date of His birth, whether in December or another month, is not the focal point of our celebration. What truly matters is that we have dedicated this period to honour His arrival. Many individuals, including my grandparents, often did not know their exact birth dates and instead selected a time to celebrate based on significant events or milestones in their lives. This practice of choosing a time for celebration is entirely valid and reflects a broader understanding of the importance of commemorating meaningful occasions, regardless of the precise timing.

In our contemporary society, it is not uncommon for individuals to celebrate their birthdays on dates that differ from their actual birth dates, and this should not be a source of contention. I find it disheartening when discussions devolve into debates over biblical or historical accuracy, overshadowing the essence of our celebration. Instead, we should approach this time with sensitivity and a deep understanding of its significance. The story of the Magi, wise men from the East who were attuned to the celestial signs, serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of our surroundings and the times we live in. In an age where many are overwhelmed by the challenges of life, it is crucial to cultivate a heightened awareness and sensitivity to the world around us, rather than allowing ourselves to be consumed by the difficulties we face.

The essence of the matter lies in awakening our sensitivity to the divine actions that are about to unfold. The biblical narrative indicates that individuals resided in Bethlehem of Judea and in Jerusalem, where the Jewish communities thrived. However, it was those from distant lands who recognized the significant events initiated by God. Their journey was marked by determination and diligence as they traversed various terrains, all in pursuit of the star that signified a momentous occurrence. This star serves as a beacon of hope, symbolizing the promise of salvation, deliverance, and transformation. It embodies the assurance that change is imminent and that God remains invested in His people, with a divine plan that is set to be realized.

The wise men experienced immense joy upon witnessing the star, a sentiment that we too should embrace as we look forward to the miracles awaiting us in the forthcoming seasons of our lives.

It is crucial to cultivate an attitude of anticipation, rather than allowing past experiences to drain our enthusiasm and hope for the future.

When asked about their expectations for the next decade, many may respond with a passive acceptance of whatever God has in store. However, such a mindset lacks the fervor that drives individuals to pursue their aspirations with vigor. To truly follow the star, one must foster an atmosphere of expectancy that contrasts sharply with previous disappointments, igniting a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for what lies ahead.

It is essential to recognize that God consistently has a plan, a fundamental truth that I wish to emphasize this morning. This divine plan encompasses not only my life but also yours, extending to our families, our children, and even the broader community and generations to come. God’s intentions are far-reaching, encompassing our personal aspirations, our professional endeavors, and the paths we tread in our vocational lives. While we may sometimes feel adrift in the unpredictability of life, particularly in the context of recent events in Nigeria, it is crucial to remember that there is a divine blueprint at work, even when it seems obscured by chaos.

In times of uncertainty, it is common for individuals to feel isolated, leading to a mindset of self-reliance where trust in others diminishes. This sentiment is particularly prevalent when past disappointments have fostered a reluctance to engage in partnerships, prompting many to adopt a solitary approach to their endeavors. However, the scripture from Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us that God has plans filled with hope and purpose for each of us. It is a reminder that, despite the randomness we may perceive in our circumstances, we can find solace in the knowledge that God is listening and present in our lives. Let us leave this gathering today with renewed confidence in the understanding that God indeed has a plan for our lives, our families, and our work.

The process of understanding our life experiences often requires us to reflect on the past, as it is through this retrospective lens that we can discern the presence of a divine plan.

When we examine our journeys, we recognize that if there were no guiding purpose, we would not have encountered certain individuals or found ourselves in specific circumstances at pivotal moments. For instance, the schools we attended, the friendships we forged, and the workplaces we chose all seem to align in a way that suggests a higher orchestration at play. The relationships that blossom from our first jobs, which often feel like family, further illustrate this notion. It raises the question of why we ended up in those particular environments if not for a greater design.

Reflecting on personal experiences, such as the day I embarked on my National Youth Service in Delta State, reinforces the belief in a purposeful plan. I recall boarding a bus at a location in Yaba, where I met a fellow traveler who would become a lifelong friend. Such encounters prompt us to consider the intricate web of connections that shape our lives, leading us to acknowledge that these moments are not mere coincidences. The biblical reference from Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, which speaks of the designated seasons for every activity, serves as a reminder that God has a plan for each phase of our lives. However, it is easy to fall into the trap of viewing life as random, especially after enduring challenging experiences. This mindset can diminish our expectations of the divine workings that are unfolding according to God’s timing and purpose.

In Ecclesiastes chapter 9, verse 11, the text presents a profound observation regarding the unpredictability of life under the sun. It highlights that the swiftest runner does not invariably emerge victorious in a race, nor does the mightiest warrior always triumph in battle. Furthermore, it suggests that wisdom does not guarantee sustenance, and skill does not necessarily equate to wealth. The verse emphasizes that even those who are well-educated do not always lead prosperous lives. This notion points to the idea that outcomes are often determined by chance, specifically by being in the right place at the right time. While this perspective may initially seem to endorse a view of life as random, a deeper examination reveals that the scripture is not merely validating such a notion. Instead, it underscores that life operates according to divine principles and intentions, which may not always align with human expectations.

The assertion that events occur by chance is not indicative of randomness in the divine sense; rather, it reflects a divine orchestration that governs the universe. The principles established by God, such as the law of seedtime and harvest, provide a framework that makes life more predictable. This understanding invites individuals to seek a closer relationship with God, as doing so may unveil principles that can guide them through life’s uncertainties. By recognizing that time and chance are part of a greater divine plan, one can appreciate that nothing occurs without God’s awareness or purpose. Therefore, the apparent randomness of life is, in fact, a manifestation of God’s sovereign design, encouraging believers to trust in His overarching plan and to seek His guidance amidst the unpredictability of existence.

There exists a sovereign authority over time and chance, which is God. What we perceive as time and chance is, in the divine perspective, a manifestation of divine orchestration. Often, our limited viewpoint leads us to interpret events as mere coincidences or random occurrences. However, if one acknowledges that nothing escapes God’s awareness, it becomes evident that He always operates with a purpose. The biblical account in Exodus 13 illustrates this principle; when God liberated the Israelites from Egypt, He intentionally chose not to guide them along a seemingly shorter route through the land of the Philistines. Instead, He directed them along a longer path, mindful that encountering conflict might deter them from their journey and compel them to return to their former bondage.

This narrative underscores the meticulous nature of God’s planning for His people. The Israelites, unaware of the divine strategy at play, may have perceived their situation as a mere wandering in the wilderness, believing that God had led them out of Egypt only to leave them in a state of uncertainty. However, God’s intention was far from leading them aimlessly; He was acutely aware of their fragile state after years of enslavement. By choosing a route that offered the potential for comfort and encouragement, He aimed to prepare them for the challenges ahead. This deliberate approach reflects God’s understanding of human nature and His desire to guide His people toward their ultimate destination, the Promised Land, while safeguarding them from the immediate threats that could jeopardize their faith and resolve.

God’s plans for us often manifest in ways that may not align with our expectations.

There are moments when we doubt our own strength to confront the challenges that God believes we can manage. This lack of faith can hinder our ability to face adversities that God has already addressed in His divine plan. In verse 21, we see that God provided a unique form of guidance and protection for His people, represented by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. These pillars served dual purposes: the cloud shielded them from the harshness of the sun, while the fire illuminated their path and offered warmth. This divine provision exemplifies not only climate control but also a navigational system that is far superior to any outdated technology we might rely on today. The pillar of fire continuously moved, guiding them until it was time to rest, demonstrating God’s unwavering presence and direction.

Reflecting on this, it is essential to acknowledge that God indeed has a plan for each of our lives, and it is crucial to align ourselves with that plan. I recall my early days of faith when I read “Following God’s Plan for Your Life” by the late Rev. Kenneth Hagin, a prominent faith teacher. This book profoundly impacted my spiritual journey, prompting me to revisit it annually for course correction and to ensure I remain on the right path. Many individuals become ensnared in the chaos of life, losing sight of the fact that God has a specific purpose for them. It is ultimately our choice to either pursue His plans or to forge our own paths, recognizing that time and chance can lead us in unexpected directions.

Every aspect of life unfolds within a designated time and season, suggesting that various experiences can lead to distinct revelations of the divine. It is essential not to disregard the different phases of your life, as each occurrence is purposeful and serves to unveil a unique aspect of God’s nature. For instance, without having faced adversity, one may struggle to grasp the concept of Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides. Similarly, without experiencing illness, the understanding of God as a healer may remain elusive. These situations are not mere coincidences; rather, they are divine opportunities for God to manifest Himself in our lives, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of His plans.

As we navigate through life’s complexities, it is crucial to remain adaptable and open to God’s guidance. Are you actively seeking to align your life with God’s intentions during this season? As you contemplate the upcoming year, consider how you can engage with His plans rather than adopting a passive attitude toward the future. The path to fulfillment and eternal life is illuminated by Jesus, who declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). This truth not only leads to everlasting life but also to a life of abundance. As we approach the New Year, let us not venture forth aimlessly; instead, we should seek direction and clarity, ensuring that we are attuned to God’s ongoing work in our lives and prepared for the blessings that lie ahead.

As you embark on the journey of establishing a business, it is essential to recognize that a divine plan is already in place. It is advisable to align your efforts with this plan rather than relying solely on your own understanding. When you earnestly seek guidance from God, you will begin to receive insights and inspirations that transcend your own thoughts. These revelations will serve as confirmation of a higher purpose, illustrating that the ideas you receive are not merely products of your imagination but rather divine interventions. This process of seeking and desiring God’s direction is crucial, as it opens the door to a deeper understanding of your mission and the path you are meant to follow.

In the biblical context, the lamentation of Jesus over Jerusalem serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of failing to recognize divine timing. In Luke 19:41-44, Jesus expresses sorrow for a city that exists without awareness of its spiritual significance and the plans laid out for its peace. His tears reflect the tragic reality that, despite outward appearances of stability, the city is blind to the impending challenges it faces due to its neglect of divine visitation. The prophecy of destruction highlights the dangers of living in ignorance of God’s purpose, as it leads to vulnerability and suffering. This narrative underscores the importance of being attuned to divine guidance, as neglecting such awareness can result in dire consequences for individuals and communities alike.

It is profoundly enlightening to recognize that God possesses a divine plan, and it is imperative for us to actively engage in realizing the fullness of that plan. As I endeavor to clarify this concept, I wish to highlight several key points that may arise in the minds of those pondering their role in this divine scheme. One might wonder, having acknowledged that God has a plan, what actions should be taken? How can one position themselves to follow the guiding light, akin to the star that led the wise men? It is crucial to differentiate oneself from those who were oblivious to the significance of Christ’s birth, particularly the Jewish leaders of that time. The wise men, in contrast, were perceptive and aware, recognizing the importance of the event even when prominent figures, including the king, were not. The king’s reaction to the prophecy of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, which he discovered through the scriptures, was one of fear and hostility, as he perceived the newborn as a threat to his reign. However, God’s foresight ensured the child’s safety through a means that would remain concealed from the unobservant, revealing the necessity of discernment in understanding divine intentions.

To effectively position oneself to follow the star, one must engage in both vigilant observation and earnest prayer. In contemporary times, the emphasis on prayer has become increasingly significant, and many have participated in various prayer initiatives, including online gatherings. Recently, we have been involved in a series of prayer meetings, culminating in the eighth session this Friday, with plans to continue into January with a dedicated 21-day period of prayer and fasting. This collective effort not only fosters a deeper connection with God but also heightens our awareness of His workings in our lives. It is essential to remain alert and attuned to the movements of God, as this sensitivity will guide us in aligning ourselves with His divine purpose.

Numerous individuals engage in prayer, yet they often neglect the importance of vigilance. In Luke chapter 12, verses 54 and 56, the scripture highlights this disconnect by illustrating how people can easily interpret natural signs, such as the rising of clouds or the direction of the wind, to predict weather changes. Jesus addresses the crowd, calling them hypocrites for their ability to discern the physical signs of nature while failing to recognize the spiritual significance of the times they are living in. This lack of awareness is a critical issue; it emphasizes that prayer alone is insufficient if one does not remain observant and attuned to the surrounding circumstances and the broader context of their lives.

Furthermore, Mark 13:33 reinforces the necessity of both vigilance and prayer, urging individuals to “take heed, watch, and pray,” as the timing of events remains uncertain. The distinction between merely praying and actively watching lies in the awareness of one’s environment, including developments within various sectors, workplaces, and the national economy. Jesus’ admonition to watch and pray serves as a reminder that prayer should be accompanied by discernment and inquiry. By observing the signs and asking pertinent questions about their implications, individuals can better understand the unfolding events and respond appropriately. Thus, the call to watch while praying is not merely a suggestion but a vital practice for those seeking to navigate their spiritual and worldly responsibilities effectively.

In the narrative of the Good Samaritan, we observe the profound truth that God often utilizes unexpected circumstances and individuals to manifest His mercy and provision. The Samaritan, a figure of no esteemed lineage, becomes the instrument through which God’s grace is revealed. This serves as a reminder that, in the midst of life’s trials, it is essential to recognize that God may be using these very situations to unveil His presence and purpose.

Instead of fixating on who has acknowledged our struggles or who has failed to offer support, we must remember that God has a divine plan in motion.

It is crucial not to be overwhelmed by adverse circumstances; rather, we should focus on celebrating recovery and the hope that emerges from our challenges.

Moreover, failing to perceive God’s hand at work can lead to a missed opportunity to witness His blessings. Individuals may find themselves in distressing situations, surrounded by those who seem indifferent or unhelpful, yet it is vital to understand that God remains steadfast in His intentions. The man who fell among thieves lamented the lack of compassion from those he expected to help, such as priests and Levites. However, it is essential to shift our perspective and recognize that God has positioned others, like the Samaritan, to assist us in our time of need. When faced with adversity, we may question God’s presence, but He assures us that He is always there, ready to provide support. It is often our own expectations that blind us to the help that is available, urging us to look beyond our immediate circumstances to see the divine assistance that surrounds us.

It is essential to cease the habit of attributing blame to family members, individuals you have previously assisted, religious institutions, leaders, colleagues, or anyone perceived as conspiring against you. This tendency to point fingers only serves to distract from the reality that God has a divine plan for your life. Embrace the affirmation that God has a purpose for you, and recognize that the individuals He chooses to work through may not always align with your expectations. Often, God selects those who seem unlikely or unqualified, as exemplified by the choice of Mary, a young virgin, to bear Christ. One might question why God would not opt for someone more experienced, yet it is crucial to understand that divine wisdom transcends human reasoning.

As we move forward, particularly into the new year, it is vital to seek God’s guidance and remain open to His methods, which may not always conform to our preconceived notions. The story of the Good Samaritan illustrates that God can use unexpected individuals to fulfill His purposes. Therefore, it is important to maintain flexibility in your expectations of how God may choose to act in your life. Sometimes, profound insights can emerge from conversations with those you might initially dismiss as unimportant or trivial. In moments when you least expect it, wisdom may arise from the most unlikely sources, reminding us to remain vigilant and receptive to the ways in which God communicates and works through others.

When reflecting on the spiritual nature of many Christians, it is essential to recognize that our understanding of God’s actions should not be confined to our past experiences or interpretations. The Bible provides numerous accounts of God’s interventions, such as the story of Elijah and the widow, which may lead us to expect similar patterns in our own lives. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that God operates beyond our limited expectations and cannot be restricted to our preconceived notions of how He should act. Instead of searching for specific scenarios or outcomes, we must remain open to the diverse ways in which God may choose to work in our lives, embracing the mystery of His divine plan.

Furthermore, the pursuit of knowledge through inquiry is vital for spiritual growth. As illustrated in Daniel 9:2, Daniel gained understanding through diligent study of the scriptures, which allowed him to comprehend the prophetic timeline concerning the Jewish captivity. This emphasizes the importance of asking meaningful questions and seeking wisdom through the right resources. It is not merely about questioning our circumstances, such as the state of our marriages or personal challenges, but rather about seeking insight into God’s purpose and direction for our lives. By focusing on constructive questions, such as how to improve our relationships or discern God’s will, we position ourselves to receive profound answers that align with His divine intentions. Therefore, let us commit to seeking knowledge with intention and purpose, trusting that God will reveal His plans to those who earnestly seek Him.

The jailer inquired of Paul and Silas about the steps he could take to attain salvation, highlighting the importance of asking the right questions in pivotal moments. It is essential to adopt a proactive stance when seeking guidance, particularly regarding one’s career trajectory in the year 2020. By engaging in prayer and reflection, individuals can become attuned to the subtle ways in which divine intervention may guide them toward their goals. This process often involves remaining open to unexpected opportunities and insights that may arise from seemingly unlikely sources.

Today, there is an invitation for individuals to earnestly seek a deeper connection with God. By raising one’s hands in supplication, one can express a desire for divine assistance in preparing emotionally, mentally, and spiritually for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This act of surrender and openness can facilitate a transformative journey, allowing individuals to align themselves with their purpose and navigate the complexities of life with renewed strength and clarity.
