From Strength To Strength

FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

The phrase “From Strength to Strength” encapsulates a powerful message of resilience and growth. It encourages individuals to affirm their progress by acknowledging their neighbor and proclaiming that they are advancing in strength. This declaration emphasizes the belief that one’s strength will not wane but will instead transition from one level to another, all in the revered name of Jesus. It is a reminder that the journey of life is characterized by holistic strength, which is attainable through faith and divine support. As one praises God, it becomes essential to recognize the nature of life’s journey, which is more akin to a marathon than a sprint, particularly for those who aspire to lead a long and fulfilling life.

To successfully navigate this marathon, one must develop a strategic plan that encompasses pacing, endurance, stamina, and stability. Reflecting on personal experiences, such as the challenges faced during high school, illustrates the importance of perseverance. In a competitive environment, where peers may showcase their physical prowess, the determination to improve and achieve one’s goals becomes paramount. The journey may be long, but with faith and commitment, what seems unattainable today can become a reality tomorrow. This belief in gradual progress reinforces the notion that obstacles can transform into stepping stones, and with God’s guidance, individuals can continuously elevate their strength and capabilities throughout their lives.

The individuals who seem distant from me today may soon find themselves sharing moments of joy and celebration together before the year concludes. It is essential to recognize that the essence of strength, as bestowed by God, encompasses influence—the capacity to navigate existing systems and engage with those in positions of authority. This influence allows us to effect change and maneuver circumstances that may currently seem insurmountable. The challenges I face today may not define my future; as the scripture suggests, there is hope for those who are alive, for a living dog is indeed preferable to a dead lion. Life brings with it the promise of hope, and with hope comes the strength to overcome obstacles that once appeared daunting. The burdens of sin, which may weigh heavily on my spirit and lead to feelings of condemnation, can be lifted through faith in God’s ability to empower me.

In a conversation with the Pastor of our Mainland Centre, he recounted his own experiences during his secondary school years, particularly regarding cross-country races. Not everyone possesses the innate talent for such events, yet life often presents us with challenges we must face regardless of our preparation. He shared a poignant moment from his final year in school when he decided to participate in a race, motivated by the desire to finish rather than to win. After qualifying alongside approximately fifty others, he found himself on the day of the race, where the reigning champion was also competing. In a moment of camaraderie and strategy, he approached the champion to inquire about his approach to the race, illustrating the importance of learning from those who have succeeded before us. This narrative serves as a reminder that while we may not always be prepared for the races life presents, our willingness to engage and learn can lead to personal growth and eventual triumph.

The individual recounted a conversation where it was suggested that asking questions would yield answers. When inquired about his strategy, he revealed that his approach was to sprint as fast as possible at the start of the race, creating a significant gap between himself and the other competitors. His plan was to maintain this lead until the end, allowing him to set a quick pace initially before slowing down, which would leave the others struggling to catch up. Pastor Debo acknowledged this tactic, expressing that it was acceptable to be in second place, as he intended to start alongside the frontrunner, emphasizing that there was no shame in following closely behind.

Unbeknownst to Pastor Debo, the competitor had honed his skills through rigorous practice, having trained at the University of Ibadan’s international school. He described the route he would take, which involved running from the university to the main gate before entering the town, where enthusiastic crowds would gather to cheer and applaud the runners. However, about 200 meters into the race, he began to regret his decision, particularly as the next 400 meters were lined with spectators. As a final-year student, he was determined not to face embarrassment upon graduation, and thoughts of retreating crossed his mind. Ultimately, he navigated through the crowd, seeking refuge in a secluded corner after passing the gate, embodying the local adage, “I cannot come and die,” which reflects a pragmatic approach to avoiding unnecessary risks.

In life, if one aims to persevere and thrive, it is essential to devise a comprehensive strategy for sustaining and enhancing personal strength.

The journey of growth necessitates a proactive approach to fortifying oneself, ensuring that rather than experiencing a decline in resilience, one can ascend to greater heights. This involves a deliberate consideration of how to cultivate and maintain strength, as many individuals falter due to a lack of planning in this regard. As one progresses through various stages of life, the demand for strength increases; thus, it is crucial to have a well-defined plan to source and replenish this strength consistently. The higher one aspires to reach, the more robust the foundation of strength required to maintain stability and continue advancing.

For instance, an individual may currently be single, harboring aspirations of establishing a loving family and nurturing well-rounded children who will eventually become responsible adults. While this vision is common, it is vital to recognize the immediate need for emotional and mental fortitude to navigate the challenges of single life. The transition into marriage and parenthood amplifies these demands, requiring even greater reserves of strength. The complexities of raising children, particularly during their teenage years, introduce a new set of challenges that necessitate significant emotional resilience. A poignant example of this struggle is illustrated by the tragic story of a consultant who specialized in caring for children with special needs. Despite her expertise and dedication, she succumbed to the overwhelming pressures associated with raising two children on the autism spectrum, ultimately leading to her untimely death. This underscores the critical importance of emotional strength and support systems in managing life’s demands.

Numerous challenges can overwhelm an individual, leading to feelings of despair and hopelessness, as tragically illustrated by the loss of a life that could not bear the weight of its burdens. It is essential to recognize that such a fate is not destined for you, and instead, one must develop a strategic approach to navigate life’s inevitable difficulties. Life does not grant exemptions from its trials; however, the assurance from God remains steadfast: He is always present, ready to support those who engage with Him. This sentiment resonates with the lyrics of a song we sang earlier, emphasizing that it is through divine assistance that we can endure and overcome our struggles. It is crucial to acknowledge that your narrative can transform; by leveraging your relationship with God, you can find the strength necessary to face any circumstance. The scriptures are filled with affirmations of God’s desire to be not just a source of strength, but the very embodiment of strength in our lives.

In Isaiah 40:28, the text poses a significant question: “Have you not known? Have you not heard?” This inquiry invites reflection on the nature of God, the everlasting Creator who does not tire or grow weary, whose wisdom is beyond comprehension. He empowers the weak and revitalizes those lacking strength, illustrating that even the young, who are typically associated with vigor and resilience, can experience fatigue and discouragement. This reality is evident in today’s society, where many young individuals are grappling with various pressures and challenges, leading them to seek solace in unhealthy alternatives. The message is clear: regardless of age or perceived strength, everyone can encounter moments of weakness, but through faith and reliance on God, one can find renewed strength and hope to rise above life’s adversities.

I aim to convey the significance of remaining relevant and aware of contemporary issues, particularly as we observe a trend among the youth gravitating towards science education. This shift often carries connotations of substance abuse, as young individuals experiment with various chemicals, mistakenly associating their academic pursuits with reckless behavior. It is disheartening to witness promising young professionals, perhaps recently employed at prestigious firms like investment banks, succumbing to the pressures of nightlife and substance use. Such behavior reflects a lack of true strength and resilience, as these individuals fail to draw from the ultimate source of empowerment. The notion of being “high” should not be linked to temporary highs from substances but rather to a profound connection with a higher purpose, as exemplified by the teachings surrounding Jesus, who is referred to as the “Son of the Highest.”

Furthermore, it is crucial to recognize that even the most vigorous youth can experience fatigue and challenges. The scripture reminds us that those who place their trust in the Lord will find renewed strength, akin to soaring like eagles. This metaphor emphasizes that life is not merely a sprint but a marathon, requiring endurance and perseverance. As we embark on a new year, it is essential to develop a strategic plan to maintain our strength and resilience in the face of life’s myriad challenges. The promise of renewal and the ability to run without weariness and walk without fainting serves as a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within us when we remain steadfast in our faith and commitment. Let us embrace this journey with determination and gratitude, acknowledging the strength that comes from a higher source.

The passage from Psalm 84, particularly verses 5 to 7, highlights the profound blessings bestowed upon those who derive their strength from the Lord and who are committed to a spiritual journey. It emphasizes that individuals who set their hearts on pilgrimage, particularly towards Jerusalem, experience a transformative journey even through challenging circumstances. The reference to the “valley of Baca” symbolizes a place of sorrow or weeping, yet those who traverse this valley are able to turn it into a source of rejuvenation and hope. The text suggests that while others may be overwhelmed by their struggles, those anchored in faith will find that their trials become opportunities for growth and renewal, as they are sustained by divine strength.

Furthermore, the passage underscores the idea that the faithful will progress from one level of strength to another, ultimately appearing before God in Zion. This journey is marked by resilience, as the autumn rains bring blessings that enhance their spiritual vitality. The notion that what causes distress in others will not affect them in the same way speaks to the unique fortitude that comes from a deep relationship with God. This relationship provides a foundation that allows individuals to maintain a positive outlook and emotional stability, regardless of external circumstances. Thus, the faithful are encouraged to embrace their pilgrimage, knowing that their connection with the divine empowers them to rise above adversity and continue to flourish.

It is the divine intention for individuals to receive strength that encompasses the body, mind, and spirit, creating a comprehensive circle of influence. This strength is not merely physical; it extends to mental fortitude, ensuring that one remains steadfast and resolute in their thoughts. The scripture in Ephesians chapter four, verse 17, addresses the concept of the futility of the mind, which refers to thoughts that lack substance and purpose. Such futile thinking can lead to emotional instability, making it difficult to confront and manage the myriad of thoughts that may arise, often causing agitation and disturbance. Many individuals struggle with the mental capacity to navigate complex issues and to envision a productive future. It is essential to recognize that without preparing oneself for the challenges that lie ahead, one risks succumbing to those very challenges when they arise.

Aspiring to achieve greatness and to lead significant enterprises requires a transformation into the person capable of handling such responsibilities. If one is not adequately prepared, the weight of a new position can lead to failure rather than success. It is crucial to understand that not every breakthrough is beneficial; some may lead to overwhelming pressure and eventual breakdown. The scripture emphasizes that if one falters in times of adversity, it is indicative of insufficient strength. The challenges faced are universal, affecting everyone, which highlights the importance of personal strength rather than the magnitude of the problems themselves. Therefore, individuals must assess their current level of strength and devise a strategic plan to enhance it, often through the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will empower them to rise to the occasion.

In my recent discussions, I have been reflecting on the importance of sustaining strength while pursuing knowledge. I recall an enlightening conversation I had with a protégé, during which I expressed my concerns about his current trajectory. Although he was performing admirably in his role at a financial institution, I cautioned him that merely excelling in his job could lead to a life filled with regret. I pointed out that while he might envision himself advancing to positions such as Deputy General Manager or Assistant General Manager in the next five to ten years, he lacked the qualifications and experience that those currently in such roles possess. I emphasized that if he did not take proactive steps to enhance his qualifications, he might find himself sidelined when opportunities arise.

I urged him to adopt a mindset focused on personal growth rather than merely aiming for a title. For young professionals, I advised that if they have the chance to review their superior’s curriculum vitae, they should do so with the intent of using it as a blueprint for their own career aspirations. It is essential to recognize that achieving such qualifications requires determination and resilience. I reassured him that individuals who hold advanced qualifications are not inherently superior; they simply have made the effort to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge. This conversation was enriched by the insights of an elder, a seasoned author in his late sixties, who contributed valuable perspectives on the pursuit of knowledge and the strength required to achieve one’s goals.

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to read one of his books on systems development, which left a lasting impression on me. When I finally met him in person, I was overwhelmed by the experience. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the chance to speak before him, as individuals of his caliber often dominate discussions, leaving others to merely echo their sentiments. During the event, I delivered my remarks, and later, while in the green room, I was inspired to engage him in conversation. I found myself contemplating what questions to pose, and it suddenly struck me that I had been grappling with a significant decision regarding my future. Just before this meeting, I had received an acceptance letter for an MBA program at Manchester Business School, but I was burdened by the financial implications and the responsibilities of my life at that moment, including caring for my one-year-old daughter and fulfilling my duties as a pastor.

In that moment of uncertainty, I approached him and expressed my confusion, seeking his guidance on whether I should pursue this educational opportunity. He asked me to envision where I saw myself in ten years, to which I replied that I anticipated continuing my pastoral work, albeit with greater responsibilities and a larger congregation. He then inquired whether the knowledge of management and leadership would be beneficial in achieving those aspirations. I acknowledged that it would indeed be valuable. His response was clear and encouraging: he urged me to pursue the MBA, emphasizing that the skills I would acquire would be instrumental in sustaining my future endeavors. This conversation not only provided clarity but also reinforced my belief that following this path was aligned with my purpose.

Upon my return to Lagos, I found myself reflecting during the flight, convinced that God had communicated a clear message to me: I had no alternative but to follow His guidance. I was assured that if He had indeed spoken, He would provide for all my needs. I completed my studies at the institution on schedule, managing to cover all my expenses while frequently traveling to and from Manchester. Throughout this journey, I experienced a remarkable sense of divine provision; various opportunities arose, and I received unexpected financial support from generous individuals. As I recounted these experiences during the first service, I realized that this all took place in January 2008. Many insights I possess today were not available to me then, and it is worth noting that my profile no longer includes an MBA, which reflects the transformative nature of knowledge. This understanding empowers one to make informed decisions and sound judgments, essential for achieving success in life. It is crucial to maintain a steadfast mindset, as life is a marathon rather than a sprint.

To sustain one’s strength, it is vital to wait upon the Lord, as articulated in Isaiah 40:31. The scripture assures us that those who wait on the Lord will have their strength renewed, akin to recharging a battery. This waiting involves engaging in worship, fasting, prayer, and fellowship with fellow believers. Some may wonder what it truly means to wait on the Lord. Consider the experience of dining at a fine restaurant, where attentive waitstaff prioritize your satisfaction above all else. They remain close by, ready to present the menu, serve your meal, and respond to any requests, all with the singular goal of ensuring your enjoyment. In a similar manner, we are called to remain in the presence of God, patiently awaiting His guidance without any ulterior motives—simply seeking His instructions.

Many individuals may not realize that their personal style or approach to life may not be as commendable as they believe, often leading them into challenging situations. In these moments of difficulty, they may turn to God for assistance. However, it is essential to recognize that relying on divine intervention solely during times of trouble is akin to a child who only seeks their parent’s help when in distress. This behavior can be perceived as taking advantage of the parent’s support. If a parent consistently finds their child in trouble, they may eventually become exasperated, questioning what the issue is this time. This dynamic mirrors how some individuals interact with God, waiting until they face adversity before seeking His guidance.

This Wednesday marks our first worship experience of the year, yet some may offer excuses for their absence, prioritizing work or other commitments over attending church. It is concerning that some individuals only feel compelled to worship when a well-known figure, such as Pastor Nathaniel Bassey, is scheduled to appear. This raises the question of whether their worship is directed towards God or merely the celebrity. It is crucial to shift away from this mindset, as the focus should be on the divine message rather than the messenger. The essence of worship lies in engaging with God’s word, regardless of who is delivering it. When participating in worship, one should seek to absorb the blessings and strength that come from God’s presence, leaving the service rejuvenated and empowered to face life’s challenges with renewed joy and peace.

Engaging with the presence of God is essential for experiencing true joy and strength. If you find that negative thoughts arise and dampen your spirit after you have sought God’s presence, it may indicate a lack of genuine engagement. The Bible assures us that in His presence, there is fullness of joy, and at His right hand, there are pleasures forevermore. This testimony emphasizes the importance of focusing on God rather than being distracted by the presence of others. Many individuals attend church with the intention of socializing rather than seeking a divine connection, which can lead to a lack of spiritual strength. Those who truly engage with God’s presence will find themselves rejuvenated and empowered, while those who do not may leave feeling unfulfilled.

It is crucial to remember that our gathering in His presence is not for the purpose of seeking recognition or connection with others, but rather to honor Jesus, who sacrificed Himself for our salvation. The pastor or any church leader cannot replace the significance of Christ’s sacrifice; they can only offer support and prayer. When John the Baptist referred to Jesus as the Lamb of God, he was making a profound statement about the impending sacrifice that Jesus would endure for humanity’s sins. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder that the act of worship and communion with God should be centered on His glory and the redemptive work of Christ, rather than on social interactions or personal agendas.

Those who were present in the vicinity when John the Baptist made his proclamation were acutely aware of the impending fate that awaited Jesus, the singular figure who sacrificed Himself for humanity’s sins. The acknowledgment of His divine power is a testament to His glory, and it is imperative to remain steadfast in waiting upon the Lord. This journey involves a continuous pursuit of knowledge, encompassing both worldly understanding and the profound wisdom found within the Scriptures. As articulated in Hebrews 5:13-14, individuals who only consume the basic teachings of the faith remain inexperienced in the principles of righteousness, akin to infants. In contrast, those who mature in their spiritual journey are equipped to discern between good and evil, having developed their faculties through consistent practice and engagement with the Word.

As we embark on this new year, we are excited to announce the introduction of various courses designed to deepen your engagement with God’s Word and His presence. These offerings will range from the Alpha course to specialized sessions focused on discipleship, biblical interpretation, and effective study methods. It is essential to participate in these courses, as they will significantly enhance your spiritual growth and understanding of the Scriptures. Furthermore, it is crucial to cultivate a personal relationship with the Bible; relying solely on digital applications can be limiting. Owning a physical copy of the Bible ensures that you have access to the Word at all times, especially during moments when technology may fail. The pursuit of spiritual strength requires moving beyond the elementary teachings of the faith, as remaining in a state of spiritual infancy offers little resilience.

It is essential to draw upon the testimonies of the faithful when reflecting on the works of God, as these accounts serve as a reminder that God is capable of even greater deeds. Hebrews Chapter 12, verses 1 to 4, emphasizes the significance of the “cloud of witnesses” who have preceded us, including Jesus Christ, who, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross and disregarded its shame, ultimately taking His place at the right hand of God. This narrative encourages us to persevere in our own journeys, inspired by the experiences of others. For instance, consider the testimony shared earlier about a woman who survived a harrowing car accident, emerging unscathed alongside her son. Such stories reinforce our faith, reminding us that we can confront fears and doubts with confidence, declaring that we are protected and accompanied by Jesus in our endeavors.

Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that the battle against fear and doubt often begins in the mind. In 1 Samuel 17, David recounts his past victories over the lion and the bear, illustrating how personal experiences of divine intervention can empower us to face formidable challenges, such as Goliath. David’s confidence stemmed from his history of being delivered by God, which fueled his emotional and spiritual resolve. In a similar vein, believers today are encouraged to seek strength from the Holy Spirit, who is an indispensable source of support and guidance. It is vital for Christians to cultivate a consistent relationship with the Holy Spirit, as reliance on His presence is essential for navigating life’s trials and tribulations.

In John 14, particularly from verses 15 to 18, Jesus emphasizes the essential role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, indicating that success cannot be achieved in isolation from this divine presence. He articulates that the challenges faced when attempting to navigate life without the Holy Spirit can be overwhelming, leading to detrimental consequences in various aspects of life, such as personal relationships, family dynamics, and moral integrity. The pursuit of success devoid of spiritual guidance often results in significant sacrifices, as individuals may prioritize their ambitions at the expense of their marriages, children, and core values. Jesus reassures His followers by promising the gift of a Helper, underscoring that the Holy Spirit is not merely an optional addition but a vital companion for enduring the marathon of life.

Furthermore, Jesus’ assertion that the Holy Spirit will abide with believers forever highlights the continuous support and strength that this divine presence provides. The Holy Spirit serves as a source of emotional, spiritual, and mental fortitude, offering comfort and empowerment during times of weakness. When believers face emotional turmoil, the Holy Spirit acts as the oil of joy; in moments of spiritual fatigue, He becomes the spirit of might. Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Spirit of Truth, signifies a profound relationship that transcends worldly understanding, as the world cannot recognize or accept Him. This promise foreshadows the transformative event of Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit would be fully manifested among the believers, equipping them for their journey ahead.

The presence of the Holy Spirit is a profound assurance for believers, as it signifies that God is not only with us but also within us.

If this scripture were to be articulated in contemporary terms, it would emphasize that He resides with you and now within you. The promise that we are not left as orphans is crucial, as some individuals may exhibit behaviors reminiscent of abandonment, failing to recognize the constant companionship of the Holy Spirit. This divine presence is essential; without it, believers may navigate life feeling isolated and vulnerable, akin to orphans wandering the streets. The neglect of the Holy Spirit can lead to unnecessary struggles and hardships, resulting in emotional and spiritual scars that could have been avoided.

The Holy Spirit serves as a vital source of support and guidance, enabling believers to rise above their challenges and soar like eagles. Engaging with the Holy Spirit allows for a transformative experience, where the burdens of life become lighter and the path clearer. It is imperative to acknowledge that the scars we bear from life’s battles can be minimized through this divine assistance. Some may find themselves tempted by worldly influences, such as cults, yet the call to remain steadfast in faith is paramount. The Holy Spirit is the helper that Jesus promised, and by aligning ourselves with His guidance, we can navigate life’s complexities with grace and strength. Embracing this relationship is essential for spiritual well-being and fulfillment.

In examining verse 18 of John 14 in the Amplified Bible, one can discern the profound assurance provided by the Holy Spirit, who reassures us with the promise, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will not leave you comfortless, desolate, bereaved, forlorn, or hopeless.” This declaration emphasizes the unwavering presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, as Jesus articulates His intention to petition the Father for the provision of another Comforter. This Comforter is not merely a passive presence but embodies multiple roles, including that of Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. Each of these titles reflects the multifaceted support that the Holy Spirit is designed to offer, serving as a source of strength and guidance in our spiritual journey.

The Holy Spirit’s role extends beyond mere companionship; He is our Strengthener and Helper, interceding on our behalf and shielding us from malevolent influences. In moments of emotional turmoil or mental distress, when overwhelming thoughts threaten to lead us astray, the Holy Spirit intervenes, illuminating our hearts with clarity and fortitude. He stands as our advocate in the heavenly courtroom, countering the accusations of the adversary with the voice of mercy. Thus, when the enemy seeks to condemn, it is the Holy Spirit who asserts our case before God, ensuring that we are upheld and supported in our struggles. This divine advocacy is a testament to the grace and love that permeates our relationship with the Holy Spirit, affirming the glory of Jesus in our lives.
