GOOD NEWS
In this initial message of the series titled “Good News,” I invite you to share with your neighbor that there is indeed good news awaiting them. Encourage others to spread the word, emphasizing that this season, God is empowering individuals to become carriers of good news. As stated in Luke chapter 4, it is a moment for celebration, and if you feel moved to express your joy, please do so. God is transforming someone in this gathering into a bearer of good news, as affirmed in the name of Jesus Christ. As we embark on this new teaching series, let us reflect on the profound message found in Luke chapter 4, verse 18, which captures the essence of Jesus’ mission. This verse, presented in red in many Bibles, declares that the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him, anointing Him to preach the gospel to the impoverished, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom to the captives, restore sight to the blind, and liberate the oppressed. May the reading of His word bless us abundantly.
On a particular occasion, Jesus entered the temple, and as was His custom, He was handed the scroll to read. This time, He chose to turn to the book of Isaiah, which contains a messianic prophecy that holds significant implications for all of us. It is one thing to read a text, but it is entirely different to engage with what has been written about oneself. This prompts us to consider how we approach the Scriptures. Some may read the Bible as if it were merely a storybook, while others might treat it like a legal document, carefully examining the fine print. Alternatively, some may skim through the text casually, akin to scrolling through social media, without truly absorbing its meaning. This reflection invites us to engage with the Scriptures more thoughtfully, recognizing their relevance and the personal significance they hold in our lives.
It is essential to reflect on the manner in which one engages with the Bible, as there exists a specific approach exemplified by Jesus during a significant moment in His life. In Luke chapter 4, verse 16, it is recorded that Jesus returned to Nazareth, the town where He was raised. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood to read. This act suggests that Jesus may have taken on the role of a lay reader within the community. On this occasion, He was presented with the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Upon opening the scroll, He discovered a passage that spoke directly to His mission and purpose. It is my hope that, during this season, you too will uncover insights within the Scriptures that will illuminate your path, dispel confusion, and provide clarity in your life.
As you delve into the Bible this week, it is crucial to approach it with intention and dedication. If you have not been engaging with the Scriptures regularly, now is the opportune moment to recommit yourself to this vital practice. The urgency of our times calls for a transformation in our attitudes toward the things that truly matter, particularly those that can foster meaningful change in our lives. Just as Jesus made it a priority to read and reflect on the Scriptures, we too should seek out the divine instructions and promises that are intended for us. May this season be one in which you discover profound truths within the Word that resonate with your personal journey and aspirations.
In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 4, verse 18, it is recorded that Jesus identified a passage and read aloud, declaring, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, for He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” After reading, He closed the scroll and returned it, capturing the attention of all present. He then proclaimed that the scripture had been fulfilled in their hearing, indicating that He was destined to enact the very message He had just read. This declaration signified His commitment to effecting transformative change in the lives of individuals, emphasizing His divine anointing for this purpose.
In contemporary society, we find ourselves amidst a pervasive state of turmoil, where crises are rampant and affect individuals across the globe. The challenges faced today are not confined to specific regions; rather, they manifest in various forms, impacting lives in profound ways. The adversary exploits this confusion, seeking to disrupt destinies, fracture relationships, and hinder personal endeavors. Alarmingly, the rates of suicide, particularly among the youth, have surged to unprecedented levels, raising concerns about the mental health of a generation that, in many respects, should be free from such burdens. The trivial matters that preoccupy young minds, such as social interactions or physical appearances, are magnified by negative influences, leading to a distorted perception of their worth and potential. It is crucial to recognize that these fleeting concerns hold no eternal significance, yet they are weaponized by the enemy to instill despair and hopelessness in the hearts of our youth.
The current state of our society reveals that no one is exempt from the challenges we face, regardless of age. Both the young and the old are grappling with various struggles, and hope has become a scarce resource, no longer freely accessible to all. The prevalence of hopelessness is alarming, as it outnumbers the hopeful, leading to a pervasive sense of unrest. In this context, the concept of entropy comes to mind, a term from elementary physics that describes chaotic movements that fail to produce meaningful change. This chaotic state reflects a society where individuals, akin to free radicals, are often driven by their own opinions, particularly in the realm of social media, where the quality of discourse frequently lacks substance. The difficulty in enduring challenges and the constant desire for novelty have led many to engage in trivial pursuits, mistakenly believing that mere activity equates to progress.
In light of these circumstances, it is crucial that we do not remain passive observers in a rapidly deteriorating world. We must recognize the divine purpose in our lives, akin to the acknowledgment of God’s calling as illustrated in Luke chapter 4. This recognition is essential as we navigate through these turbulent times, understanding that we are endowed with an anointing that empowers us to confront the challenges of our era. The world is in dire need of divine intervention, and personally, I find myself yearning for God’s presence more than ever. People are in search of peace, hope, security, and assurance, yet true stability can only be found in the unwavering promises of a God who is steadfast and has proven His faithfulness throughout history.
Hope is an essential element for individuals navigating through periods of uncertainty, and it is the transformative power of the gospel that instills this hope.
This power resides within the church, which encompasses all of us as believers rather than merely the physical structure. A critical question arises: how are we managing our own emotional and spiritual well-being? It is imperative to reflect on whether we possess peace in our hearts, as one cannot extend what they do not possess. The acknowledgment of our collective identity as the church is vital, and it is equally important to recognize that Jesus has already provided for our needs through His death and resurrection. Unfortunately, many individuals are either searching in the wrong places, failing to seek at all, or allowing themselves to be overwhelmed by their circumstances, despite the provisions that have already been made available.
Moreover, it is crucial to understand that many of us already possess the necessary resources to navigate our challenges, yet we remain perplexed, often unaware of our own potential. Jesus proclaimed that the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him, and similarly, we must recognize that we are not in search of the Spirit; we have already been anointed. Our world is in need of our contributions, and it is essential to communicate this truth to one another. There are significant declarations made by Jesus that warrant our attention, especially in times when we must address our internal struggles. By cultivating a positive attitude towards the divine power that can transform our inner world, we position ourselves to be instruments of change in the broader world. Unfortunately, many individuals prioritize the transient distractions of social media over the eternal truths found in the Word of God, which is the true source of life and sustenance. The words spoken by Jesus are not merely informative; they are imbued with spiritual vitality and the promise of eternal life.
One interpretation of the message conveyed is that the words I share with you are derived from my spirit, intended to resonate with your spirit and impart life. When I neglect to focus on this connection, I inadvertently create an opportunity for peace to slip away from me. I pray that today, peace will no longer evade you in the precious name of Jesus. However, it is essential for us to reflect on what we are truly paying attention to. Recently, I observed two news channels, one local and one international, for about fifteen minutes, and rather than feeling a sense of tranquility, I found myself feeling increasingly unsettled. Engaging with trending topics on social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook often leads to a similar outcome; instead of fostering peace, it tends to provoke agitation.
This raises a critical question, particularly for the younger generation, often referred to as digital natives: why do we believe that immersing ourselves in these distractions will help us reclaim our peace? It is concerning that one might spend hours online without even opening the Bible, yet still express dissatisfaction with their emotional state. We must remember the profound truths articulated by Jesus, which are particularly relevant in our current times. In John 9:5, He asserts, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world,” a statement that can be personally interpreted as a call to embody that light ourselves. Furthermore, in John 14:6, He declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” This is complemented by the comforting promise in John 14:27, where He states, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
You find yourself in this service, whether physically present in this room or participating online today, because there is a divine intention for God to engage in a transformative work within your heart. As previously mentioned, it is essential to adopt the mindset of one who is sent. However, when the individual designated as the messenger of good news—the very agent of restoration—requires restoration themselves and is devoid of peace, the fulfillment of God’s work in our world becomes significantly hindered. Let us refer to the New Living Translation of the scripture, which we will read together. Please direct your attention to the screen as we prepare to engage with the first statement.
In this pivotal moment, Jesus proclaims that He is leaving us with a precious gift, and I encourage you to turn to your neighbor and inquire if they have received this gift. The reality is that if you are in Christ and have been born again, you have indeed received this gift, which is peace of mind and heart. As we embark on this new week, I pray for anyone here who is struggling against the forces that disrupt their peace. Together, we stand in faith against these challenges, seeking the restoration of God’s peace within your heart. I invite you to take a moment to reflect on one or two areas in your life where you feel a loss of peace. Raise your right hand to Jesus as a sign of surrender and share these concerns with Him, acknowledging the places where your peace feels compromised. This is an opportunity to engage with God in the midst of this message, as He is actively working to restore your peace right now.
Jesus imparted a profound gift to His followers, one characterized by peace of mind and heart. He emphasized that this peace is unique, a divine offering that the world cannot provide. In a world often marked by turmoil and unrest, it is essential to recognize that true peace cannot be derived from external circumstances. Engaging excessively with the chaos of contemporary life can lead to a depletion of inner tranquility. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on the teachings of the Bible, which asserts that God sustains all creation through His powerful word. This divine word should serve as the foundation of one’s life, especially in challenging times. The scriptures are abundant with promises, prophecies, and assurances that reveal the nature of God and His capabilities. They document His ability to save completely and are filled with covenant promises from an eternal God who remains ever-powerful.
In light of these truths, it is wise to prioritize spiritual insights over worldly distractions to maintain one’s peace, enabling one to act as a conduit of peace in the world. Jesus’ declaration in John 16:33, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world,” serves as a powerful reminder of His sovereignty. This statement implies that He possesses control over all circumstances, including our personal lives and the broader world. Believers are encouraged to enter each week with the assurance that God governs their lives, families, and finances according to His divine will. This conviction fosters a sense of security and peace, allowing individuals to remain steadfast and untroubled amidst external challenges.
There exists a profound sense of confidence that arises from a deep understanding of the word of God, as well as the promises and agreements that govern our interactions in the world. Engaging with these elements requires a level of responsibility akin to that of a discerning businessman who approaches a contract with the utmost seriousness. Such an individual does not skim through the document carelessly; rather, they take the time to settle in, perhaps with a cup of coffee, to thoroughly examine the details, especially when significant stakes are involved. In contrast, many individuals approach the Bible without the same level of seriousness, often dismissing its importance. This lack of engagement can lead to questions about one’s commitment to spiritual growth, as some may even wonder if one must be a pastor to delve deeply into the scriptures. It is essential to recognize that the act of reading the Bible should be approached with the understanding that it holds vital significance for our lives.
As we navigate our spiritual journeys, it is crucial to develop the capacity to recognize our identity in the world and to appreciate our apostolic calling. This calling signifies that we are equipped with a divine purpose that extends beyond our immediate circumstances, such as our jobs. Many individuals find themselves in a state of confusion, mistakenly believing that their entire existence revolves around their employment. However, there is a broader life awaiting discovery beyond the confines of one’s current position. The nature of one’s prayers often reflects their spiritual state; for instance, if someone is solely focused on seeking a new job, it raises the question of how that new opportunity aligns with God’s greater agenda. This alignment is essential, as articulated in Luke 4:18, which speaks to the anointing to address the needs of the world, such as healing the brokenhearted and liberating the captives. By adopting an apostolic perspective in our relationship with God, we can unlock a deeper understanding of our purpose and the myriad possibilities that lie beyond our present challenges.
It is expected that, even during challenging times, individuals should strive to reach beyond their immediate circumstances. This act of extending oneself can lead to the discovery of solutions that are not merely confined to one’s current environment. The gospel serves as the most powerful answer to the myriad of issues and challenges that individuals encounter today. Regardless of the specific difficulties faced by you or your acquaintances, the gospel remains the fundamental and most effective response. While acquiring additional knowledge, enrolling in courses, or undergoing training can certainly enhance one’s skills, the core of addressing profound issues lies in recognizing and appreciating the significance of what God has accomplished, His potential to intervene, and the promises He holds for the future.
In the context of biblical teachings, particularly in Luke chapter 7, there is a significant statement that warrants our attention. When examining verses 19 and 22, we find John the Baptist, who previously proclaimed the coming of Jesus with great conviction, now grappling with doubt amidst his own trials. John, who had once declared Jesus as the Lamb of God and had witnessed divine revelations, found himself in a state of uncertainty, prompting him to send his disciples to inquire whether Jesus was indeed the Messiah or if they should anticipate another. This shift in John’s perspective highlights the human tendency to question faith during times of crisis, illustrating that even those with profound spiritual insights can experience moments of doubt when faced with overwhelming circumstances.
Inquire whether he is indeed the one we have been anticipating, or if we should seek another, as his pace in my life appears to be insufficient. I acknowledge that I have previously discussed him, yet the tangible impact of his presence is lacking. The scripture recounts that when the disciples approached Him, they conveyed a message from John the Baptist, asking, “Are you the coming One, or should we look for another?” In response, the Bible notes that at that very moment, He healed numerous individuals suffering from various ailments, afflictions, and evil spirits, restoring sight to the blind. This illustrates that even when one does not perceive immediate changes, significant transformations may still be occurring.
It is crucial to understand that feelings of hopelessness do not equate to the absence of hope in the world. One must reassess their approach, particularly in relation to the Word and the Spirit of God. As I mentioned earlier, numerous FM radio stations in Lagos are actively broadcasting, yet the reception may vary based on one’s connection. The existence of these stations does not diminish their transmission; similarly, the inability to feel God’s presence does not imply His absence. He continues to operate, and it is essential to align oneself with the frequency of peace rather than the frequencies of worry and anxiety. Jesus, who is referred to as the Prince of Peace, remains ever-present, and it is up to you to establish that connection.
In the context of the inquiry posed to Jesus regarding His identity as the awaited Messiah, it is noteworthy that significant events were unfolding simultaneously. The scripture illustrates that while some individuals were preoccupied with their doubts, others were actively seeking the divine presence and experiencing transformative encounters. For instance, in a recent gathering, testimonies were shared that highlighted miraculous healings and life-changing experiences. One particularly striking account involved a young woman who had only menstruated twice a year for many years. During a service, she was inspired by the testimony of another individual who had received healing from a similar condition. This prompted her to believe that her situation, being less severe, could also be addressed by divine intervention. In a remarkable turn of events, she experienced a miraculous change right there in the service, demonstrating the profound impact of faith and the supernatural.
As the crowd engaged in their questioning, Jesus responded with clarity and authority, directing them to convey to John the Baptist the evidence of His ministry. In Luke 7:22, He instructed them to report the miraculous occurrences: the blind receiving sight, the lame walking, the lepers being cleansed, the deaf hearing, and the dead being raised. Furthermore, He emphasized that the poor were receiving the good news of the Gospel. This response not only affirmed His identity but also illustrated the active work of God among the people. It serves as a reminder that while some may be skeptical or distracted, there are many who are earnestly seeking a connection with the divine, eager to witness and partake in the grace and wisdom that God offers.
Jesus emphasized that while problems may seem overwhelming, they are indeed being addressed. He categorized these issues, but the essence remains that solutions are being found. I wish to encourage anyone who may feel distant from God; He continues to resolve challenges in our lives. If you have not sensed His presence recently, it may be time to reassess your mental and emotional positioning. Consider altering your prayer focus; if you have been seeking answers without success, perhaps God is inviting you to embrace His yoke and burdens. Jesus assured us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light, which encompasses His desire to save souls, mend broken marriages, and support young individuals facing despair. Instead of fixating solely on personal desires, such as seeking a new job, consider reaching out to those in need around you, such as a friend enduring domestic strife.
In light of recent events, including the tragic loss of a well-known gospel musician due to domestic violence, it is crucial to recognize the urgency of our collective responsibility. While it is easy to assign blame, God is actively seeking individuals willing to be conduits of change in the lives of others. Many are preoccupied with their own struggles, waiting for divine intervention in the form of financial blessings, and thus fail to see the opportunities for service that God presents. It is essential to shift our perspective from being mere recipients of God’s grace to becoming instruments of His will. As we embrace a more apostolic mindset, we can allow God to work through us, recognizing our role as saints tasked with sharing the Good News. Those of us called to preach must not shy away from offering the solutions that the world desperately needs.
The Apostle Paul, in Romans 1:16, expresses a profound conviction regarding the gospel of Jesus Christ, declaring his lack of shame in proclaiming it. He emphasizes that this gospel embodies the power of God for salvation, a term that transcends mere spiritual rebirth. Salvation encompasses a broader spectrum, including solutions to life’s challenges, divine establishment, restoration, and healing. It signifies a transformative power that provides divine direction to all who believe. Therefore, it is imperative for believers to recognize that they are bearers of solutions rather than problems, and they must embody this truth in their daily lives. The acknowledgment of this divine empowerment is a cause for celebration, as it reflects the glory of Jesus.
Furthermore, salvation in Christ is intended to facilitate holistic prosperity—spirit, soul, and body. It is the responsibility of believers to allow God to work through them to address the needs of others. While spiritual rebirth is the ultimate goal, the manifestation of God’s power in various aspects of life serves to communicate His love and offer a glimpse of heavenly existence. Jesus exemplified this principle, as His ministry was not solely focused on spiritual matters but also on addressing practical issues faced by individuals. Believers must adopt the mindset of being messengers of good news and agents of restoration, recognizing that their endeavors, whether in the workplace or in business, are part of a divine mission. This perspective is particularly crucial for young people, who may find themselves navigating the complexities of early financial success, which can either be a blessing or a challenge if not approached with the right mindset.
In contemporary society, there is a prevalent desire among individuals, particularly those in their twenties and thirties, to achieve financial success rapidly, often with the intention of enjoying the fruits of their labor in their later years. However, it is crucial to consider whether one possesses the necessary resilience and stability to manage the potential consequences of such wealth. The pursuit of becoming a multi-billionaire within a short timeframe can be enticing, yet it has the potential to disrupt lives if one is not adequately prepared. The purpose of the current discourse is not to deter individuals from their aspirations for financial breakthroughs, but rather to encourage a grounded approach that ensures that newfound wealth does not lead to personal disarray. It is essential to cultivate the right mindset and understanding of one’s responsibilities, particularly in relation to divine expectations.
The experiences of those who have achieved significant financial success reveal a troubling trend: many are ill-equipped to handle the pressures and challenges that accompany their wealth. This phenomenon extends beyond mere financial gain; it encompasses the pursuit of fame and recognition, which many individuals seem to covet without considering their capacity to manage such accolades. A recent speaker at the Vantage Forum emphasized the importance of corporate governance in business, noting that while it may not directly generate income, its absence can lead to financial ruin. This principle applies equally to personal lives, where a strong foundation—akin to corporate governance—can provide the necessary stability and focus. Engaging in the gospel of peace serves as a vital anchor, fostering a sense of purpose and clarity. Individuals are encouraged to share their faith boldly, becoming agents of positivity and restoration, thereby transforming their environments into spaces filled with light and hope rather than negativity.
In Nigeria, the prevailing sense of insecurity is a well-recognized reality, and it is unnecessary to reiterate the challenges individuals face in ensuring their safety amidst such conditions. Furthermore, while inflation is a global issue affecting many nations, the wisdom found in Psalm 23 offers a profound perspective. The verse, “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want,” serves as a reminder that despite the economic hardships and scarcity, God remains our steadfast provider. This assurance is particularly vital in times of uncertainty, as it emphasizes the enduring nature of divine guidance and support. The scripture also warns that in the latter days, darkness will envelop the earth and its inhabitants, yet it reassures us that God will illuminate our paths, underscoring the importance of faith in navigating these turbulent times.
Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that the Great Commission is not merely a suggestion but a divine mandate that calls us to spread our light throughout the world.
This command is particularly significant in areas where lives are at stake, as adherence to instructions can be the difference between safety and peril. Just as medical professionals must follow precise protocols in an operating theater, or pilots must adhere to flight instructions to ensure safe landings, so too must we approach our spiritual responsibilities with the same seriousness. Many individuals mistakenly perceive their participation in God’s mission as optional; however, it is essential to understand that such involvement is integral to personal growth and spiritual fulfillment. The Apostle Paul boldly declared his pride in the gospel of Jesus Christ, recognizing it as the ultimate source of salvation for all who believe. As we embark on this week, let us embrace this calling with the urgency and dedication it deserves, fully aware of the transformative power of the gospel in our lives and the lives of others.
There are three essential actions that we encourage everyone at Elevation Church to embrace during this season: to pray, to preach, and to invite. It is crucial for each member to fully engage in these practices, as they are fundamental to our collective mission. I urge you to capture this message visually; if you are participating online, take a screenshot or save it as a screensaver on your device. This will serve as a constant reminder that this is a pivotal time for us to commit to praying, preaching, and inviting others into our community. Even if you feel uncertain about how to preach, begin with prayer. As we progress through this series, you may discover your own unique way to share the message of Christ with others.
Some individuals may feel hesitant to intervene in conversations, particularly when sensitive topics arise, such as someone expressing distress over personal issues. It is perfectly acceptable to start by simply listening and then encouraging prayer as a response. Do not approach our gatherings with a passive mindset; remember that we are not merely attending a performance, but rather entering into the presence of God. Your active participation is vital, and it is essential to prepare through prayer for both your own involvement and for those whom God intends to bless through our services. Consider identifying two individuals in your life whose circumstances may be dire; your prayers could be the lifeline they need. Prayer has the power to intervene in moments of despair, potentially preventing tragic outcomes, as it can lead to divine connections that offer hope and support when it is most needed.
In a moment of reflection, an individual may find themselves contemplating the idea of taking drastic actions against someone, perhaps even envisioning a scenario where they would resort to violence. However, unbeknownst to them, there exists a network of support and prayer that transcends their immediate circumstances. As they journey home, a phone call or a fleeting social media post may serve as a catalyst for change, prompting them to reconsider their intentions. A simple message urging them to seek peace within their relationships can have a profound impact, softening their heart and redirecting their thoughts. Many individuals have shared their experiences with me, recounting how they have received messages or dreams that provided them with guidance and comfort. These occurrences are not merely coincidences; they are manifestations of the power of prayer and divine intervention, where God utilizes my image to convey important messages to those in need.
The essence of this phenomenon lies in the understanding that when one prays for another, a spiritual mark is placed upon that individual, inviting the presence of the Holy Spirit into their life. This divine marking serves as a beacon, attracting assistance and protection from harm. It is crucial to shift the focus from merely discussing the struggles of loved ones, such as a relative grappling with addiction, to actively engaging in prayer on their behalf. By doing so, we enable the Holy Spirit to accompany them on their journey toward healing and redemption. Our role extends beyond personal worship; it encompasses the responsibility to invite others into the fold, encouraging them to join us in prayer and community. This is not merely a time for solitary worship but an opportunity to extend our reach, inviting others to experience the transformative power of faith, whether in person or through online platforms.
In certain regions of the world, individuals may find themselves in areas devoid of a physical church or a vibrant community of faith. In such circumstances, it is essential to inform them that Elevation offers online services, allowing them to engage with the messages from wherever they are. Encourage them to watch these services and share their thoughts on the messages they encounter. This interaction can lead to meaningful discussions about the teachings, fostering a sense of connection and spiritual growth, which is precisely how God intends for us to operate in this season. For those with children living abroad or in various locations, this is an opportune moment to reach out, inquire about their church attendance, and suggest that they participate in online services. Engaging in conversations about the messages they have watched can deepen their understanding and provide a platform for shared spiritual experiences.
Recently, I reached out to an individual who had been away from church for several weeks. They informed me that despite their absence from physical gatherings, they had been actively participating in our online services and were eager to provide feedback on their experiences. This individual, known for their commitment to spiritual well-being, reassured me that our efforts to enhance our online presence were indeed bearing fruit. It was gratifying to hear that our digital outreach was making a positive impact, reinforcing the importance of maintaining connections with our community, regardless of geographical barriers. For those currently watching online, I encourage you to consider returning to the church in person, as the collective experience of worship can be profoundly enriching.
