HOOKED FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 emphasizes the importance of companionship, stating that two individuals are more advantageous than one, as they can share the rewards of their efforts. The scripture highlights that if one person stumbles, the other is there to provide support and lift them up. This notion of companionship is crucial, as it underscores the vulnerability of those who are alone; when they fall, there is no one to assist them. It is a profound reminder that God intends for us to have supportive relationships in our lives. The assurance is given that God will place individuals in our paths to help us during challenging times, ensuring that we are never isolated in our struggles.

The passage further illustrates that God’s design for humanity is rooted in connection rather than isolation. Companionship is not limited to marital relationships; it encompasses all forms of vital connections that can aid us during crises. In recent years, the world has faced numerous challenges, and the impact of these events can often feel personal. Whether the struggles are internal or external, they can have serious repercussions if we neglect to cultivate our relationships. The COVID-19 pandemic has particularly strained many connections, affecting marriages and business partnerships alike. The lingering effects of this crisis will likely continue to shape our interactions for years to come, as fear and insecurity have become prevalent in many hearts, directly influencing the dynamics of our relationships.

Recently, I encountered a scholarly article that highlights several pressing global issues we are currently facing. I categorized these challenges into four main areas: the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, international conflicts, and corruption. Unfortunately, these issues appear to be persistent and will likely remain with us for the foreseeable future. For instance, the ongoing conflict in Europe is causing significant distress across the continent, with some nations facing the prospect of recession due to an energy crisis that leaves them without sufficient gas for heating as winter approaches. This situation has led to a surge of individuals fleeing certain regions in Eastern Europe, illustrating the widespread turmoil. Additionally, there are concerns that the United States may experience a mild recession in the coming year. It is crucial for those who have not been monitoring the global economy to begin doing so, as no region is immune to the ramifications of these crises.

In light of these challenges, the implications for our interpersonal relationships are profound. During a recent webinar titled “Relocating without Dislocating,” we discussed the importance of being prepared for potential upheavals, particularly for those who are considering or have already made significant life changes. It is often the case that individuals neglect to prioritize essential matters until they find themselves in a crisis. While various advertisements may seem irrelevant during stable times, they can take on new significance when difficulties arise. It is essential to recognize that true wisdom comes from a higher source, and the more knowledge one acquires, the better equipped they will be to navigate current challenges. Our church serves as a valuable resource for this wisdom, and feedback from our events consistently reflects their positive impact. Participants often express that their time spent in these gatherings is well invested, reinforcing the notion that preparation and understanding are vital in times of uncertainty.

In my estimation, there are perhaps over 200 individuals present, and I am acutely aware that numerous others are engaged in conversations elsewhere, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine at a friend’s gathering. The video capturing this event is readily accessible online; I encourage you to visit my YouTube channel, Godman Akinlabi Official, or the elevationng YouTube page to view it. It is possible that your partner is located in another country, so I suggest reaching out to them to watch it together. In the video, I have emphasized five or six critical issues that warrant your attention. I will refrain from reiterating these points this morning, but I urge you to take the time to discuss and analyze them together, ensuring that you are both aligned on the path to sustaining your relationship. It is essential to avoid the common pitfall of drifting apart and attributing the disconnection to external forces, as it is often a result of ignorance and a lack of wisdom.

The notion that challenges arise in our relationships is a reality that cannot be overlooked. As articulated in Matthew 7:24, Jesus illustrates the importance of acting upon His teachings. He likens those who heed His words to a wise individual who constructs their home upon a solid foundation, capable of withstanding the storms of life. Conversely, those who disregard His guidance are compared to a foolish person who builds on unstable ground, ultimately leading to their downfall when faced with adversity.

It is crucial to recognize that our struggles, particularly those related to feelings of dislocation or a sense of disconnection, stem not from divine intervention but from our own ignorance.

God, in His faithfulness, provides us with the means to navigate our challenges, and it is our responsibility to seek wisdom and understanding in order to foster resilience in our relationships.

Your home will remain secure, and your businesses will thrive, as will your partnerships, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. However, it is crucial to recognize that God has endowed us with a providential power that flourishes through synergy and unity. This synergy, while powerful, will inevitably face challenges and tests over time. The strength of your relationships, whether they be friendships, partnerships, or marriages, will be subjected to various trials, including external pressures and unforeseen circumstances. These tests can be particularly daunting, especially in light of the global challenges we face today. The lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have strained many marriages, leaving behind a trail of trauma that continues to affect couples. It is essential to reflect on how you are nurturing your companionship. Are you fostering a relationship that is built on a sustainable foundation, or are you allowing it to drift toward a disposable mindset?

The manner in which you approach your marriage or relationship can determine its longevity and resilience. It is vital to assess whether your connection is on a sustainable trajectory or if it is being treated as something disposable. Many individuals may perceive their relationships as disposable, leading to a lack of emotional investment. Just as one would not cherish a paper plate, which is meant to be discarded after use, a relationship treated as disposable will not evoke the same care and commitment as one that is valued and nurtured. In this context, I have titled this message “Hooked For Better or For Worse.” The commitment to remain together, regardless of the circumstances, is essential. However, it is important to understand that God desires our relationships to flourish and improve, rather than deteriorate. Embracing this perspective can lead to a more profound and lasting connection.

The notion that two individuals can achieve more together than alone is a sentiment often expressed, emphasizing that the intention behind such partnerships is not to diminish the quality of relationships but rather to enhance them. The phrase “two are better than one” encapsulates the idea that collaboration and companionship can lead to improved outcomes. However, as relationships develop, they may encounter significant challenges that require diligent protection and nurturing. In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 17, verse 1, it is stated that offenses are inevitable in human interactions. The proximity of individuals can often amplify perceived faults, creating an environment where grievances are more easily noticed. When we are close to others, our shortcomings may become more pronounced, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts that can strain the relationship.

In addition to internal dynamics, external pressures also play a crucial role in shaping relationships. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has left many individuals grappling with uncertainty regarding their desires and needs, which can further complicate marital connections. It is essential to establish a robust foundation built on companionship, vulnerability, and sensitivity to navigate these complexities. As individuals face various challenges, including fears about their professional lives, it is vital to foster open communication and empathy. Without a willingness to be vulnerable, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand and support one another. True empathy requires a mutual exchange of feelings and experiences; without this, misunderstandings can arise, leading to frustration and emotional distance.

It is often the case that individuals endure struggles that remain hidden beneath the surface, as their outward expressions may not reveal the turmoil they are experiencing. In a hypothetical competition for the ability to feign well-being, some individuals would undoubtedly excel, earning accolades for their performances. This façade can lead to significant frustrations within relationships, as the lack of openness creates barriers to understanding and connection.

It is essential to recognize that crises—whether they are internal, external, social, or environmental—can serve as catalysts for strengthening bonds rather than driving individuals apart.

When managed effectively, these challenges can unite partners, allowing them to confront issues collaboratively. For instance, a couple facing the complexities of raising a child with special needs may find that their shared experiences foster a deeper connection, rather than creating distance.

Moreover, when one partner is grappling with difficulties at work, this shared struggle can become a point of unity rather than division. Engaging in mutual support, such as praying together or discussing their challenges, can enhance their emotional connection and provide a common ground against external pressures that threaten their relationship. It is crucial to avoid placing blame on one partner for the issues at hand, as such attitudes can lead to feelings of isolation and resentment. Statements that dismiss a partner’s concerns, such as relegating their struggles to a familial issue or insisting on a lack of interest, can be deeply hurtful and damaging to the relationship. As we reflect on these dynamics, it is vital to remember the commitment to support one another through both the highs and lows, focusing on the potential for growth and improvement rather than succumbing to negativity. The scriptures remind us of the importance of unity in marriage, emphasizing the need to embrace the journey together, with a focus on the positive aspects of the relationship.

Today, I will examine two biblical figures and the lessons we can derive from their interactions, which I believe will resonate with someone here. The first character I wish to discuss is Lot, whose narrative begins in the book of Genesis, specifically in chapter 19, but traces back to Genesis 12 when God called Abraham to leave his homeland and venture to a promised land. Abraham, accompanied by his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot, embarked on this journey. It is intriguing to consider the nature of Lot’s relationship with Abraham, as he was granted the unique opportunity to be part of a divine covenant initiated by God with Abraham. Despite this privilege, Lot’s lack of awareness and appreciation for the blessings he received through his uncle is perplexing. While Abraham was blessed abundantly, Lot remained oblivious to the significance of his connection to such a pivotal figure in biblical history.

The lessons that Lot failed to grasp during his time with Abraham are particularly relevant today. For those who are single, it is crucial to understand that certain qualities and virtues cannot be acquired merely through marriage; they must be cultivated beforehand. Sensitivity, respect, and the ability to prioritize others are essential traits that Lot neglected to develop while living under Abraham’s roof. This lack of insight culminated in a conflict between the herdsmen of both men, where Lot failed to recognize that his prosperity was directly linked to Abraham’s influence. Instead of showing gratitude and wisdom, he allowed discord to arise, demonstrating a troubling lack of maturity. This narrative serves as a reminder that one must actively learn and grow from the relationships and opportunities presented to them, rather than taking them for granted.

It is essential to consider the implications of one’s actions and relationships, particularly when evaluating the dynamics between individuals. If a person is capable of mistreating a close relative, such as an uncle, it raises significant concerns about how they might treat someone who has recently entered their life, such as a spouse. The metaphorical expression regarding disrespect towards benefactors and partners serves to illustrate the gravity of such behavior.

It is crucial to recognize that when one fails to honor those who support them, they inadvertently jeopardize their potential for meaningful companionship.

The manner in which individuals interact with those sent into their lives by divine providence can have lasting repercussions, particularly if they exhibit insensitivity and a lack of respect.

The case of Lot serves as a poignant example of the consequences of neglecting to cultivate a personal relationship with God and failing to honor those around him. Despite living in close proximity to Abraham, who had a profound connection with the divine, Lot did not develop his own spiritual foundation. This lack of awareness ultimately placed him in peril when the angels came to warn him of impending destruction. Had Lot maintained a relationship with God, he would have received the necessary guidance to escape the impending doom of Sodom and Gomorrah. The narrative illustrates that God chose to reveal His plans to Abraham, highlighting the distinction between a familial connection and true friendship with the divine. This underscores the importance of nurturing relationships and honoring those who play significant roles in our lives, as neglecting these principles can lead to dire consequences.

God communicated with Abraham regarding the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, prompting Abraham to take action. He began to intercede not only for Lot but also for the city itself, driven by his concern for Lot and his family. Despite his deep apprehension, Abraham hesitated to press God for mercy, fearing the consequences of his boldness. This internal conflict stemmed from his awareness of the gravity of the situation and his desire to protect himself from divine wrath. Ultimately, the angels arrived in Sodom due to Abraham’s intercession, ready to fulfill their mission of delivering Lot and his family from the impending doom.

In a previous encounter, as recorded in Genesis 14, Abraham had demonstrated his commitment to Lot by assembling 318 soldiers to rescue him from captivity. This time, however, he remained passive, perhaps disheartened by the apparent disregard for his warnings. The narrative illustrates the importance of heeding wise counsel, especially for the younger generation, as Lot was at that time. Eventually, the angels physically removed Lot, his wife, and their daughters from the city, urging them to flee without looking back. As they made their escape, Lot’s wife disobeyed this directive and looked back, resulting in her transformation into a pillar of salt, a poignant reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of unwavering faith in divine guidance.

Brother Lot, it is imperative to recognize your role as the leader of this family. Everyone should align themselves in front of you, while you guide them with clear instructions to remain focused and steadfast. It is essential to maintain a forward gaze and avoid distractions. As you navigate these familial responsibilities, it is crucial to be aware of the emotional needs of your spouse. For instance, she may express frustration over not being able to take her wig, but you can reassure her that a new one will be provided at your destination. Understanding that some individuals have a strong emotional attachment to their past can help you support them through these challenges. It is our duty, as partners, to assist one another in overcoming such emotional hurdles, especially when they may be entangled in difficult situations.

As you reflect on your relationship, consider the possibility that your spouse may be facing struggles that require your sensitivity and support. While it may be tempting to respond with frustration or to suggest separation, it is often more beneficial to extend grace and offer assistance in resolving these issues together. Lot’s lack of awareness regarding his wife’s vulnerabilities serves as a cautionary tale. It is vital to remain attuned to your partner’s needs, offering encouragement and understanding rather than judgment. The scripture reminds us that those who are strong should bear the weaknesses of the weak, rather than seeking personal satisfaction. Lot’s wife’s decision to look back ultimately led to her demise, symbolizing the detrimental effects of losing focus on the family’s collective journey. This pivotal moment marked a decline in their familial unity, underscoring the importance of mutual support and commitment in relationships.

Today, I find myself constrained by time, as I reflect on a significant moment in the narrative of Lot’s daughters. They looked at one another, questioning whether this was truly their fate, pondering the absence of suitable men in their vicinity. In a moment of desperation, influenced by malevolent thoughts, they devised a plan that led to their father becoming intoxicated, resulting in incestuous relations. The offspring of this union gave rise to the Moabites and the Amorites, who would become perpetual adversaries of Israel. This historical account illustrates the dire consequences of insensitivity and poor decision-making, as these descendants continually posed threats to the Israelites, who trace their lineage back to Abraham, while the Moabites and Amorites stem from Lot.

In a different yet equally compelling narrative, we turn to the story of Abigail and her husband Nabal, as recounted in 1 Samuel 25. Nabal, a wealthy man from Maon, possessed vast herds, including three thousand sheep and one thousand goats, which he was shearing in Carmel. Despite his riches, Nabal was described as harsh and unyielding in his dealings, a stark contrast to his wife Abigail, who was both intelligent and beautiful. This juxtaposition raises questions about the nature of character, especially considering Nabal’s lineage as a Calebite, a descendant of Caleb, known for his strength and faithfulness. The story serves as a reminder of the wisdom found in biblical texts, which provide valuable insights and lessons applicable to our contemporary lives, urging us to engage with these narratives for deeper understanding and guidance.

When God acknowledged two of the twelve spies sent to explore the Promised Land, it was Caleb and Joshua who stood out for their faithfulness. Among those connected to Caleb was a man named Nabal, whose very name signifies foolishness, and he often acted in a manner that reflected this trait. In our own lives, we may find ourselves entangled in relationships that are either temporary or strained due to someone’s unwise behavior. In such situations, it is crucial to consider the appropriate stance to adopt in order to protect both the family unit and the relationship, especially given the inevitability of changing circumstances. The narrative of Abigail serves as a poignant lesson in this regard, contrasting her character with that of Lot, who failed to recognize and address his wife’s vulnerabilities and desires, particularly her attachment to Sodom.

In the account involving Nabal and Abigail, we see a significant moment in the life of David, who was then a fugitive evading King Saul. Accompanied by approximately six hundred men, David and his group provided unsolicited protection to wealthy individuals, ensuring their safety and security. When Nabal was celebrating a successful harvest with a feast for his staff, David sent ten young men to approach Nabal with a request for assistance, essentially asking for a gesture of goodwill. The instructions given to these young men were clear and respectful, as David emphasized the importance of greeting Nabal warmly and conveying his well-wishes. This interaction highlights the dynamics of relationships and the importance of wise communication, especially in the face of foolishness, as exemplified by Nabal’s behavior.

I have been informed that you currently have a shearer, and your shepherds have been in our company without any harm coming to them; they have lacked nothing during their time in Carmel. You may inquire with your young men, and they will confirm this. Therefore, I kindly request that my young man finds favor in your eyes and is treated well, as we have arrived on a festive occasion. Please provide whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son, David. Unlike the typical individuals from the Lagos area, who might demand what you possess, David has approached you with humility, acknowledging that you are within your territory. He is merely seeking assistance, as he and his men have been providing protection for you.

Nabal, however, dismissed David’s request with contempt, questioning who David was and belittling his lineage by referring to him as the son of Jesse. His words implied that David was insignificant, suggesting that there are many servants who abandon their masters and cause disturbances. When David’s men returned and conveyed Nabal’s insolent response, a wave of anger surged within David. He declared that by the next morning, there would be no male or animal left alive in Nabal’s household, as he prepared to unleash his wrath with his 600 men. Meanwhile, Abigail, Nabal’s wife, learned of her husband’s reckless words and recognized the need to intervene. Understanding the gravity of the situation, she decided to act decisively, gathering an array of provisions and setting out to meet David. Upon reaching him, she dismounted her donkey, humbly knelt before David, and spoke with the wisdom that contrasted sharply with her husband’s foolishness.

In every individual, there exists both a ruler and a fool; the persona you engage with is the one that will respond to your overtures. Abigail addressed David, acknowledging him as a king, despite her husband’s disparaging remarks that labeled David as insignificant. She emphasized that a true king does not unjustly take lives, urging him to find peace. Abigail presented gifts for David and his men, demonstrating her respect and understanding of his position. Upon her arrival, she immediately took responsibility for her husband’s foolish actions, stating that any offense should be attributed to her. This act of humility and accountability resonated with David, who recognized the significance of her intervention.

The following day, upon returning home, Abigail found her husband inebriated and chose not to confront him immediately. Instead, she allowed him to sleep off his intoxication, waiting for a more opportune moment to address his reckless behavior. When she finally spoke to him, she highlighted the gravity of his actions, explaining that his foolishness could have led to the destruction of their family. Abigail’s wisdom averted her husband’s death although ultimately he later died, after which David married her, illustrating that such sagacity cannot leave one in a state of widowhood for long. Many individuals, however, seek to escape relationships without making an earnest effort to resolve issues.

It is crucial to address the shortcomings of a partner rather than harboring resentment and exiting a relationship in bitterness, as this can lead to prolonged emotional turmoil.

By striving to cultivate strength and grace within a relationship, one can ensure that, even in the event of a separation, they remain in a favorable position, supported by divine favor that paves the way for a brighter future.

Your capacity to endure pain and manage the shortcomings of others appears to be quite limited, resembling that of a child who possesses no tolerance for discomfort. In such instances, even minor provocations can lead to an exaggerated emotional response, akin to a child who, upon facing a trivial issue, may cry and throw a tantrum. This behavior is not uncommon in certain marital dynamics, where individuals react disproportionately to their partner’s flaws. The scripture reminds us that those who are strong should support the weaknesses of the vulnerable rather than seek personal gratification. It is essential to recognize the importance of this principle, as it encourages a more compassionate and understanding approach to relationships.

As we reflect on these insights, it becomes crucial to broaden our perspective beyond immediate grievances and consider the larger context of our relationships. This involves looking at the family unit as a whole and envisioning the potential future of the marriage. If one bases their commitment solely on the missteps of their partner, many would find it challenging to sustain their marriage. Therefore, it is vital to take responsibility for the blind spots of your spouse, fostering a nurturing environment where both partners can thrive. By anticipating and addressing each other’s needs, a strong relationship can flourish, even when personal needs may feel unmet. It is through grace and patience that one can continue to support their partner, trusting that their own needs will eventually be fulfilled, as retaliatory behavior only leads to further discord.

It is crucial not to delegate the responsibility for the family’s success solely to your partner. Some individuals may adopt a mindset that assigns the burden of financial and emotional stability to one person based on traditional gender roles or income disparities. This approach is fundamentally flawed, as it undermines the collaborative nature of a partnership. For instance, Abigail could have confronted her spouse by emphasizing the importance of shared accountability, particularly in challenging situations. Instead of retreating into silence or detachment, she could have asserted her role in the family dynamic, highlighting that both partners must engage actively in navigating crises. By doing so, she would not only protect her son but also reinforce the notion that family success is a collective endeavor, rather than the sole responsibility of one individual.

Furthermore, the importance of open communication and vulnerability in a relationship cannot be overstated. In the biblical narrative of Lot and his wife, had they shared their fears and uncertainties with one another, they might have found strength in their partnership. Lot’s wife expressed her temptation to look back, indicating her struggle with leaving behind their past. Lot could have reassured her, emphasizing that their future held promise and that they could seek support from family or friends. This exchange would have fostered a deeper connection and understanding between them, allowing them to face their challenges together. Additionally, it is essential to remain attuned to how external changes impact both partners in a relationship. Sensitivity to each other’s emotional and psychological states can significantly enhance the bond and resilience of the partnership, ensuring that both individuals feel valued and supported in their shared journey.

Over the past five years, you may have embarked on a business venture alongside a partner who has now experienced a shift in their aspirations and plans. This partner is contemplating relocating their family abroad, while your own family remains in the current location. The financial resources generated from the business are shared, yet communication between you has abruptly ceased. The sudden announcement of their visa approval and impending departure has left you feeling resentful and isolated. It is crucial to recognize that the departure of one party does not necessitate the dissolution of the partnership. Open dialogue can facilitate a mutual understanding of the situation, allowing both parties to navigate their emotions and maintain a constructive relationship.

In this season, it is unfortunate to witness the deterioration of relationships that are divinely ordained, often fueled by bitterness, envy, and jealousy over matters that could be amicably resolved. It is essential to focus on preserving these vital connections, as they are integral to your life. As you reflect on these challenges this week, seek wisdom and guidance, trusting that divine intervention will safeguard every significant relationship you hold dear. May you find reassurance in the knowledge that your home will thrive, and you will be enveloped in wisdom, ensuring that you are never at a loss in your marital journey. Ultimately, may your life reflect the glory of Jesus, bringing peace and stability to your relationships.
