How To Become That Person Your World Needs

The Elevation Church, Lagos, Nigeria

HOW TO BECOME THAT PERSON YOUR WORLD NEEDS

Could you assist me in addressing your neighbour and conveying the message that their world is in need of them? It is important to point out to someone and affirm that their world requires their presence and contributions. Praise God for this opportunity. Some may wonder about the relevance of this topic, especially if they are seeking assistance in their own lives. For those who have been following along, you are aware that our recent teachings have revolved around the theme of the everyday supernatural. If you are new to this series, I encourage you to access our messages, which are available for download on our MP3 site, or watch them for free on YouTube. Our online church platform also hosts these teachings, allowing you to engage with them at your convenience, particularly as we prepare for the upcoming Accelerate Worship Conference. We anticipate a powerful outpouring of supernatural grace and strength in the lives of all participants as we enter the latter half of the year.

As we conclude this teaching series and transition into the concept of the everyday supernatural, we have drawn attention to Romans 8:14, which states, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” This verse underscores the importance of being guided by the Holy Spirit, a principle we have emphasized throughout our discussions. It is essential for every believer to cultivate an expectation of divine guidance and to actively seek to embody the fruits of the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, gentleness, patience, and long-suffering. Our focus has been on the practical application of these virtues in our daily lives, as God desires for each of us to live out our faith in tangible ways.

In our discussions surrounding the concept of supernatural living, we have previously explored the nature of supernatural acts, highlighting the tendency among many Christians to seek divine interventions from God. However, when the topic shifts to the notion of supernatural living, there is often a reluctance to embrace it fully. This reluctance is sometimes rooted in the belief that such a lifestyle is reserved for pastors, ministers, or those who have been Christians for an extended period. Some individuals even express a sense of inadequacy regarding their spiritual status, claiming that their level of faith does not warrant expectations of supernatural behavior. This mindset reflects a misunderstanding of the Christian journey, as there is no hierarchy in the experience of being born again; rather, God calls all believers to continually cultivate the fruits of the Spirit, which embody the essence of supernatural living.

Jesus’ teachings provide a profound framework for understanding this concept. He instructed his followers to respond to challenges with grace, such as going the extra mile or offering more than what is requested. These directives illustrate the transformative power of the Holy Spirit within believers, urging them to live not in reaction to circumstances but in revelation of their identity as children of God. While some may argue that such responses are impractical in a bustling environment like Lagos, where immediate retaliation is often the norm, the call remains to transcend cultural expectations. Living by revelation means seeking to understand the underlying motivations of others and responding with wisdom rather than instinctive reactions. This approach fosters a deeper spiritual maturity and reflects the true nature of a life led by the Spirit, emphasizing that our responses should be rooted in divine insight rather than mere human instinct.

In the context of a Christian marriage, it is essential to recognize that one cannot simply echo the words of others without contributing one’s own perspective. The notion of responding to a single statement with a multitude of personal opinions undermines the essence of Christian values. It raises the question of where the fruits of the Spirit, particularly patience, are manifesting in our lives. Throughout this series, we have highlighted the importance of embodying a supernatural existence, which may often be tested by the individuals placed in our lives. These encounters serve as opportunities for us to demonstrate the presence of the Holy Spirit within us, particularly in challenging situations. The manner in which we respond to these trials is a reflection of our commitment to living a life that is aligned with divine expectations.

As we conclude this teaching series, it is imperative to internalize the understanding that our world is in dire need of individuals who embody the supernatural. This need extends beyond personal gain; it calls for each of us to recognize our role as representatives of God in a society that often seeks Him solely for material benefits. God, too, has a purpose and is in search of agents who will carry forth His message. The supernatural is not merely a personal advantage; it is a means through which we can effectively communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every true believer is inherently designed for the advancement of God’s kingdom, empowered by the Holy Spirit. This divine coding is not solely for personal success or health, but rather to navigate a world that is increasingly challenged by various adversities, including health crises. Living in good health today is, in itself, a testament to the supernatural, given the pervasive challenges that surround us.

To achieve a life of good health, it is essential to place trust in God, not only for personal well-being but also to fulfill our role as His representatives on Earth.

This divine empowerment enables us to live in a manner that transcends the ordinary, as articulated in Romans chapter 8, verses 14 to 19. The scripture emphasizes that those who are guided by the Spirit of God are recognized as His children. Furthermore, verse 15 reassures us that we have not been given a spirit of fear or bondage; rather, we have received the spirit of adoption, which allows us to call upon God as “Abba, Father.” This concept of adoption, as highlighted in the Passion Translation, is described as the spirit of mature sonship, a profound understanding that many Christians may overlook.

In one of the teachings within this series, I elaborated on the significance of this adoption, noting that many believers remain unaware of the full implications of their relationship with God as their Father. It is indeed possible for an individual to be adopted by the Creator of the universe yet continue to live with a mindset of helplessness, primarily due to a lack of understanding of their new identity. This situation is akin to a person in a disadvantaged position receiving adoption papers from a wealthy benefactor, such as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, yet failing to comprehend the benefits and privileges that accompany such an adoption. Consequently, despite being saved and recognized as a child of God, one may experience no transformation in their life due to mental limitations and a lack of exposure to the new life offered in Christ Jesus. The scripture reminds us that we have not received a spirit of fear, but rather the spirit of adoption, empowering us to embrace our identity and call upon God with confidence.

The term “Abba Father” signifies a deep, personal relationship with God, akin to calling Him “Daddy.” This intimate designation is further supported by the subsequent verse, which states that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit, affirming our identity as children of God. This relationship carries profound implications; if we are indeed children, we are also heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. However, this inheritance comes with a condition: we must share in Christ’s sufferings to also partake in His glory. Verse 18 emphasizes that the current sufferings we endure are insignificant when compared to the glory that will be revealed within us, setting the stage for the anticipation expressed in verse 19.

Verse 19 articulates the eager expectation of creation, which awaits the revelation of the sons of God. This expectation is not merely abstract; it encompasses the people in our lives—colleagues, friends, and acquaintances—who are longing for our true manifestation as children of God. Their deliverance and salvation are intricately linked to our willingness to embrace our identity in Christ. The more we suppress our true nature and the workings of the Holy Spirit within us, the longer these individuals will remain in their state of waiting. God desires for us to reveal His presence in the world, as underscored in Mark 16:15, where we are commanded to go forth and preach the gospel to all creation. This call to action highlights the urgency of our role in manifesting God’s love and truth to those around us.

The assertion that certain signs will accompany those who believe is a profound declaration of faith. It is emphasized that these signs will manifest in various forms, such as the expulsion of demons, the ability to speak in new languages, the handling of serpents without harm, and the healing of the sick through the laying on of hands. This promise is not merely a passive assurance; it is contingent upon the active engagement of believers who embody and express the divine nature of God. The signs are not intended to follow those who remain inactive or stationary; rather, they are meant to accompany those who are actively engaged in the mission of representing the Kingdom of God. Therefore, if one seeks to experience more supernatural occurrences in their life, it is essential to recommit oneself as an agent of the divine, fully embracing the role of a kingdom representative.

In the context of Mark 16:20, it is noted that the disciples did not confine themselves to their homes but ventured out to share the message of Christ everywhere they went. This includes all aspects of life—whether at work, home, social gatherings, or casual encounters. The term “everywhere” signifies a comprehensive approach to evangelism, where believers are encouraged to engage in conversations about faith and share personal testimonies in any setting. The Lord actively collaborates with those who take this initiative, affirming their efforts through accompanying signs that validate their ministry. If one has not recently experienced signs of divine presence or approval, it may be an indication to enhance their representation of God, becoming a more effective mouthpiece for His message in diverse environments.

It may be necessary for you to engage more actively in the work of the Kingdom of God than you have in the first half of this year, as God is not wasteful with His power. His divine strength is intended for specific missions, and He commissions us to fulfill these tasks, desiring that we accurately represent Him in our endeavors. If you aspire to witness the supernatural on a daily basis, it is essential to commit yourself as an agent of heaven, embracing the role of a Kingdom representative. There are instances where individuals perform their duties in a covert manner; for example, you may be a teacher in a school while simultaneously serving as an undercover agent of heaven, or an architect on a construction site fulfilling a similar role.

A friend of mine experienced a situation that illustrates this concept well. While working as an architect, the principal of the construction company approached him with a curious inquiry, asking whether he was an architect or a pastor. Caught off guard, my friend responded that he was indeed an architect, yet the principal noted that people frequently sought him out for counsel. My friend humbly attributed this to the gifts bestowed upon him by God. It is indeed a positive reflection when individuals seek guidance or prayer, especially in a world where emotional struggles, failing marriages, and pervasive hopelessness are rampant. The Bible reminds us that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world; thus, if we wish to see God’s hand at work in our lives in extraordinary ways, we must position ourselves as vessels that He can utilize effectively.

Many individuals fail to grasp the divine design of the world, particularly in relation to their own needs. It is essential to understand that God does not desire for us to approach life with a sense of desperation or a mindset focused solely on our deficiencies. Instead, we are encouraged to adopt a more constructive perspective. The world, in its essence, responds not to our needs but to the seeds we plant. This metaphorical notion suggests that just as one cannot expect to cultivate a harvest by burying their needs in the ground, we must instead invest our efforts into sowing seeds—representing our talents, gifts, and contributions. When we approach our circumstances with this understanding, we unlock the potential for growth and abundance.

Furthermore, it is crucial for Christians to recognize that fixating on personal needs can hinder the manifestation of God’s supernatural power in their lives. The earth is designed to yield results based on the seeds we sow, not the needs we express. When we present ourselves as vessels of potential rather than as mere embodiments of neediness, we align ourselves with the divine principles that govern abundance. Our gifts, graces, and values serve as the seeds that, when sown, can lead to the fulfillment of our needs. Thus, while it is natural to have personal needs, it is vital to shift our focus from these needs to the seeds we can offer, allowing God to work through us and meet our needs in ways that transcend our expectations.

It is essential to present oneself as an individual who possesses the means to fulfill a need rather than as someone who is merely in need. This concept is illustrated in Mark 16:20, which states that the disciples went forth to preach everywhere, with the Lord accompanying them and affirming their message through signs. The individuals described in this passage did not appear as those who were desperate or lacking; rather, they were proactive in their mission to save souls, meet needs, and transform lives. While they undoubtedly faced their own challenges, they did not allow these difficulties to overshadow their purpose. The principle conveyed here is that one should not focus on their own needs but rather on the potential they have to contribute positively to others. By bringing forth one’s own resources, or “seed,” one can find that their own needs will be addressed in the process.

Furthermore, the notion of spiritual gifts, as articulated in 1 Corinthians 12:7, emphasizes that each individual is endowed with unique abilities to assist one another. These gifts are not merely for personal gain but are intended to foster mutual support within the community. It is crucial to recognize that the purpose of receiving these spiritual gifts is to empower us to help others, thereby creating a cycle of giving and receiving. When we acknowledge the gifts bestowed upon us, we can better understand our role in uplifting those around us. This realization encourages a shift in perspective, prompting individuals to recognize the importance of their contributions rather than fixating on their own needs. By affirming this understanding with those close to us, we reinforce the idea that we are all equipped to support one another in our journeys.

In the previous service, I highlighted a common tendency among individuals to easily voice complaints regarding situations they have the power to change. To illustrate this point, I often reflect on my own experiences within my family, where I tend to be the primary source of complaints. I possess a unique ability to identify issues and shortcomings, which can sometimes be perceived as a gift. Those who work alongside me are well aware that my initial focus upon entering any environment is to pinpoint what is not functioning properly. This inclination has prompted me to seek divine assistance in achieving a more balanced perspective, allowing me to also recognize the positive aspects of my surroundings. Over time, I have made progress in this area, yet the reality remains that my first instinct is to notice deficiencies. For instance, upon entering a venue, I can quickly count the number of burnt-out light bulbs, and my mind instinctively begins to evaluate the overall organization and presentation of the space.

This tendency, while potentially beneficial in certain contexts, can also have detrimental effects, particularly in personal relationships. I often find myself as the chief critic in my household, voicing concerns and complaints. However, I have been guided by a higher power to understand that an excessive focus on negativity can hinder rather than help. It is essential to strike a balance with this gift, using it to foster improvement rather than to criticize destructively. There are moments when I feel compelled to confront my wife about perceived shortcomings, but I am reminded to consider constructive actions instead. For example, rather than lamenting her tardiness in getting ready for church, I could take the initiative to prepare her clothes the night before, thereby eliminating any excuses for being late. This shift in mindset emphasizes the importance of using one’s insights to uplift and support others, rather than merely to express dissatisfaction.

I have provided assistance, and I am uncertain whether you fully grasp the essence of my message. This is precisely the point I am addressing; you have already foreseen potential issues, so why not take proactive measures to address them? In the context of marriage, some individuals tend to procrastinate, often placing the blame on others for delays. It is evident that you are aware of the factors that could lead to tardiness, so what steps have you taken in advance to mitigate this? Some may argue that it is not their responsibility to perform certain tasks, such as ironing clothes for a partner, claiming it is not their role. However, it is essential to recognize that everyone will eventually encounter their own responsibilities and challenges. The gifts bestowed upon us by God are intended for the benefit of others, as indicated in the scriptures. We are called to utilize our talents not solely for personal gain but to uplift those around us.

The Bible elaborates on the diverse spiritual gifts granted to individuals, emphasizing that these abilities are meant to serve the community. For instance, some are endowed with the capacity to offer wise counsel, while others receive special knowledge or profound faith. Additionally, there are those who can communicate in unknown languages and interpret these messages. Each of these gifts plays a vital role in fostering a supportive environment, whether in the workplace, among friends, or within the church community. It is crucial to acknowledge that your unique talents can significantly contribute to the well-being of others. The world is in need of your contributions, and it is imperative to embrace this calling. As we continue to utilize our gifts, we must maintain a broader perspective, understanding that our actions can have a profound impact on the lives of those around us.

The overarching purpose behind the gifts and resources bestowed upon me by God transcends personal benefit; it is fundamentally about serving others.

This notion is supported by Romans 8:19, which articulates that the creation eagerly anticipates the revelation of the children of God. In this context, it is essential to recognize that the supernatural empowerment granted by Christ to His disciples was intended for active engagement in the world. Rather than remaining passive recipients of divine grace, they were commissioned to extend that grace to others, healing the sick and cleansing the lepers, embodying the principle of giving freely what they had received. This call to action is a profound reminder of our responsibility to share the blessings we have been given, and it is with great reverence that I proclaim glory to Jesus for this divine mandate.

As I conclude, I wish to highlight three significant aspects of our supernatural mission. It is crucial for every believer to grasp that the world’s most pressing issue is not merely poor leadership, inadequate education, or political strife; rather, it is the pervasive problem of sin. In response to this fundamental crisis, God manifested Himself in the person of Christ, who became the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s transgressions. As His representatives, we bear the responsibility of communicating this message of hope and redemption. The Scriptures remind us that repentance cannot occur without the proclamation of the Gospel, and it is imperative that we actively share this message. While initiatives such as providing educational resources are valuable—evidenced by the recent opening of our shelter for street children—our primary mission remains the dissemination of the Gospel, ensuring that all have the opportunity to hear and respond to the transformative power of Christ.

The various initiatives and efforts being undertaken are commendable, as evidenced by the footage and images I received last night. Observing these moments fills one with a sense of fulfillment, particularly knowing that this mission is making a significant impact. The children in the shelter are set to receive scholarships, enabling them to pursue their education, which is a remarkable achievement. The emotional responses from some parents, who were seen in tears of gratitude, further highlight the profound effect of these efforts. Additionally, the decision to cover school fees for individuals is another noteworthy aspect of this mission. However, amidst these positive developments, there exists a unique responsibility that only we, as believers and born-again children of God, can fulfill: the imperative to witness Christ.

It is essential to reflect on the question of what true profit is if one gains the entire world yet forfeits their soul. While we may construct schools and empower individuals through various means, these efforts are rendered incomplete if they do not lead to spiritual salvation. Many individuals, regardless of their beliefs, can engage in philanthropic activities such as sponsoring events or providing housing for the less fortunate. I have witnessed numerous organizations, including those associated with the Ikoyi Club, actively participating in various charitable endeavors. However, it is crucial to recognize that only believers and their enterprises can dedicate their resources to the preaching of the gospel. Therefore, we must remain vigilant in our commitment to contribute what is rightfully God’s—our time, finances, and networks—toward the advancement of the gospel. Philanthropy devoid of the gospel lacks completeness; our efforts to sustain life should ultimately aim to lead others to a relationship with God, ensuring a more meaningful existence beyond this life. This serves as an important consideration for all of us, particularly those in the business community.

As you allocate resources within your business, it is essential to engage in meaningful endeavors while also allowing your financial contributions to reflect your values and beliefs. It is imperative to dedicate a portion of your time, finances, and platforms to God, as these acts serve not only as a testament to your faith but also as a challenge to others in your community. Last month, we discussed the concept of honor and the distinction between seed and bread, emphasizing the importance of giving to Caesar what is due and to God what belongs to Him. I recall sharing the poignant story of the woman who anointed Jesus with costly perfume, a gesture that some criticized as wasteful. However, Jesus defended her actions, highlighting that her offering was a preparation for His burial, underscoring the significance of prioritizing spiritual commitments over material concerns.

In evaluating your time and resources, it is crucial to discern how they can serve the gospel. Reflect on your daily activities and consider how they align with the mission of advancing God’s kingdom. A life lived outside this framework lacks relevance in spiritual matters and fails to contribute meaningfully to the divine purpose. To cultivate a more impactful life, it is vital to develop a profound sense of compassion—an unusual compassion that prompts you to ask what truly stirs your heart. This introspection will guide you in making decisions that not only benefit your business but also resonate with your spiritual obligations, ensuring that your contributions are both significant and aligned with the teachings of the gospel.

The profound sense of compassion I feel for those who have yet to embrace salvation is a driving force in my life. This compassion is rooted in the belief that the Kingdom of God will flourish when we prioritize our mission above all others. In a world filled with various agendas—political, social, and otherwise—many individuals dedicate their time and resources to advancing these causes. However, our focus should remain steadfast on a singular agenda: the call for repentance and the desire that none should perish. When a person’s heart undergoes transformation, they gain clarity in their moral choices. My aim is not to engage in debates over personal lifestyles but rather to guide individuals toward a relationship with Jesus Christ. An encounter with the Holy Spirit can be transformative, and it is this experience that I wish to facilitate for others.

Our commitment to this mission requires a foundation of genuine compassion, as it is through this lens that we can effect real change in people’s lives. Throughout history, God has often used individuals as instruments of His will, much like angels in biblical narratives. For instance, Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, received divine guidance through an angelic visitation, urging him to support Mary and the holy child she bore. In a similar manner, you may find yourself in a position to offer encouragement and hope to someone in distress, reminding them of God’s ongoing purpose in their relationships. You might be the only messenger of hope they encounter, and your voice could resonate more profoundly than any celestial being. A church devoid of compassion will struggle to engage in the supernatural, as it is through empathy and understanding that we can truly connect with the needs of others and witness the miraculous work of God in their lives.

The Bible illustrates the profound gift of the Holy Spirit, which enables individuals to possess an innate understanding that guides their actions, often driven by compassion. During the first service, I found myself seated at the back, a position I often choose when I am not actively teaching. This allows me to absorb the message and observe the congregation. In this era of masks, my presence may go unnoticed unless one is familiar with me. As I sat quietly, I noticed a woman who appeared to be in distress, leaving the service momentarily before returning. In that moment, I felt a strong prompting in my heart, a nudge from the Holy Spirit urging me to approach her, greet her, and offer my company.

Upon sitting beside her, I inquired about her well-being, to which she initially responded that she was fine. However, she soon revealed that she was struggling deeply within her heart. I assured her that I understood, as it was precisely why I felt compelled to sit with her. In a matter of minutes, just before we concluded the service, she confided in me about a troubling situation that threatened to unravel her marriage and family. I took her hand, prayed with her, and shared some words of wisdom. This experience highlights the importance of responding to the Holy Spirit’s promptings with compassion, especially in a time when many have become inward-focused due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The isolation many have experienced has led to a narrow perspective, often causing individuals to overlook the broader world and the myriad of needs that exist beyond their immediate surroundings.

I developed a concept that I refer to as the “wheel of compassion,” which serves as a personal reminder of the various directions in which I feel God is guiding my heart at any given moment. This tool encourages me to remain aware that divine inspiration can lead me to focus on different areas of need. At times, I find myself compelled to pray for those who are suffering, particularly the sick and those in pain. During the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, I reached out to my friends, asking them to share the names of anyone they knew who was affected by the virus. My intention was to pray for them, even if I could not be physically present. I remember calling individuals in isolation every day, lifting them up in prayer, and extending my intercessions to their families and loved ones. Remarkably, every member of our congregation who entered an isolation ward during that time emerged safely, which I attribute to the power of collective prayer and faith.

The importance of prayer cannot be overstated, especially for those who are feeling lost or hopeless. In moments when a friend confides in you about their struggles, such as the pain of losing someone close, it is crucial to respond with empathy and support rather than simply offering a brief acknowledgment. Engaging in acts of compassion means being willing to hold their hand, encourage them, and actively seek ways to assist them. Furthermore, to experience a life filled with supernatural occurrences, one must commit to fervent and continuous intercession. It is not enough to possess a compassionate heart; one must also be dedicated to the practice of prayer. This dual approach of compassion and intercession can profoundly impact the lives of those around us, fostering a community of support and hope.

It is essential for individuals to engage in prayer consistently and to remain steadfast in their spiritual journey, as emphasized in scripture. Some may argue that this message is directed towards exceptionally devout Christians; however, it is important to recognize that every believer, regardless of their current spiritual maturity, is called to deepen their prayer life. If your prayers are predominantly focused on personal desires and needs, it may indicate that you are still in the early stages of your spiritual development. As we transition into the latter half of the year, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the desire to cultivate a more robust prayer life, one that includes intercession for others and a commitment to being a vessel for God’s work.

The biblical account of Abraham’s intercession for Sodom and Gomorrah serves as a profound example of the power of prayer and the importance of standing in the gap for others. When God contemplated the destruction of these cities, He sought out Abraham, granting him the chance to plead for their salvation. Through a series of negotiations, Abraham implored God to spare the cities for the sake of the righteous, demonstrating the essence of intercessory prayer. This narrative illustrates that prayer is not merely a personal endeavor but a communal one, where the act of praying for others can lead to divine intervention. As believers, we must consider who is praying for us and, in turn, who we are lifting up in prayer. The principle remains that when we actively support others through prayer, we create a reciprocal relationship where God raises individuals to intercede on our behalf, often in ways we may not even recognize.

It is crucial to remain engaged in our mission today, as the message we carry holds immense significance. I cannot stress enough the importance of sharing and proclaiming the gospel with both joy and a sense of urgency. Signs and wonders are intended for those who actively communicate the word of God and share the gospel. You do not need to rely solely on scripture to convey your message; even if you are unfamiliar with many verses, your personal testimony can be a powerful tool. Simply inquiring if someone knows Jesus, offering to pray for them, or reassuring them of Jesus’ love can serve as a form of preaching. By sharing your experiences, you are already fulfilling the call to spread the gospel.

Without the proclamation of the gospel, we cannot expect to witness consistent manifestations of the supernatural. The courage to declare the gospel is often rooted in personal encounters with the Holy Spirit. When you experience God’s intervention in your life, it is essential to share that with others. If you have received healing or support in times of need, let others know about it; this is how we effectively preach the gospel. In a world filled with fear, it is imperative that we, as the church, embody boldness. We must be willing to confront challenges, pray for others, and speak life into situations, even amidst adversity. I invite you to join me in raising your hands today as a symbol of our commitment to this mission.
