How To Unleash Contagious Joy

HOW TO UNLEASH CONTAGIOUS JOY

In our ongoing teaching series, we emphasize the theme of unleashing contagious joy, as we believe this is a pivotal season in which God is renewing our purpose in the world. He does not send us forth empty-handed; rather, He equips us with the gift of joy that can be shared with others. It is essential to explore the concept of joy and understand how we can effectively disseminate this contagious joy during these challenging times. The prevalence of depression is widely acknowledged, compounded by economic downturns that affect communities globally. The troubling economic indicators, coupled with the myriad of issues that disrupt families and lead children astray, paint a grim picture of our current reality. Businesses are facing significant challenges, and in Nigeria, for instance, there is a palpable sense of hopelessness as we approach a governmental transition, with uncertainties surrounding the upcoming elections.

As we navigate these turbulent waters, it is natural to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of change and the potential for increased suffering under a new political regime. Such thoughts can lead to a state of despair, making it difficult to envision a brighter future. However, it is crucial to recognize that one’s future is not determined solely by geographical location but rather by the divine revelation that guides one’s path. Even if one were to leave Nigeria, it is vital to understand that true hope and purpose lie in the revelation of God’s presence, not merely in the physical environment. When we find ourselves in a place by divine revelation, we can encounter God and experience His joy, which transcends our circumstances. Thus, it is imperative to focus on the joy that God provides, as it is this joy that can transform our outlook and empower us to uplift those around us.

The narrative of Abraham, often referred to as the father of faith, alongside his son Isaac, serves as a profound illustration of divine guidance and obedience. God instructed Abraham to journey to a location that He would reveal in due time. When Isaac reached a pivotal moment in his life and expressed a desire to travel to Egypt, God intervened decisively, instructing him to remain in Gerar. This episode underscores the significance of revelation in understanding God’s will, emphasizing that true insight is granted when one maintains a vital connection with the divine. This morning, it is essential to recognize that joy plays a crucial role in fostering this connection, as it is through joy that we can deepen our relationship with God.

In Isaiah chapter 12, verses 3 to 6, we find a powerful affirmation of joy and praise. The passage states that with joy, one will draw abundantly from the wellspring of salvation, and on that momentous day, a song of gratitude will be sung. The lyrics encourage believers to thank the Lord, proclaim His deeds among the nations, and celebrate His mighty works. This call to worship extends beyond geographical boundaries, inviting all people—from Lagos to London, from Belgium to Canada—to join in joyful praise for the Holy One of Israel, who dwells among His people. It is important to note that during the time of Isaiah, God’s presence was manifested among His people, but with the arrival of the New Testament and the events of Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit transformed this relationship, allowing God to reside within believers. Thus, the divine presence is not merely external but internal, enriching the lives of those who embrace it.

This morning, as you entered this gathering, you brought the presence of God with you. In such a collective assembly, there exists a profound convergence of grace and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We have come together in the spirit of the just, those who have been made perfect, alongside an innumerable company of angels, as described in the book of Hebrews. This gathering is often referred to as Mount Zion, the sacred mountain of the Lord. Within this spiritual atmosphere, we encounter the spirit of judgment, and various divine occurrences unfold. However, it is essential to recognize that even in solitude, the presence of God resides within us. The Holy Spirit dwells in every believer, and as New Testament followers, we possess a greater understanding than those who lived in the time of Isaiah, who prophesied about God’s presence among them. We are not merely recipients of God’s presence; we carry Him with us, and this truth empowers us against the challenges of the world.

The adversities we face in our lives may attempt to hinder our experience of His divine presence, yet we must resolutely declare that nothing can diminish the joy of the Lord within us. The scripture encourages us to share this joy with the world, proclaiming the greatness of God’s deeds. It instructs us to express gratitude, to praise His name, and to inform the nations of His mighty works. We are called to sing of the wonderful things He has accomplished and to make His praises known globally. The New King James Version of Isaiah 12:3 beautifully articulates this sentiment, stating, “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” This metaphorical “wells of salvation” signifies the covenant promises and the assurances found within God’s Word, inviting us to partake deeply in the richness of His salvation.

The Scriptures can be likened to a well of salvation, serving as a source from which we can draw the profound benefits of redemption. Just as a well provides water, one must possess the means to extract it, and in this context, joy is the instrument through which we access these blessings. The benefits include peace, divine protection, longevity, and the favor of God. However, it is essential to recognize that merely having God’s promises does not guarantee their realization in our lives. There must be a connection that enables us to actively engage with these promises, allowing us to fully experience the richness of what God has in store for us.

Many individuals may express frustration, claiming that the word of God is ineffective or that His promises have not materialized.

This perception often arises from a lack of understanding of the necessity to labor in faith and to assert the victory of Jesus Christ in our lives. One significant way to do this is by cultivating joy, which serves as a divine link to the miraculous works of God. Conversely, negative emotions such as fear and anxiety can tether us to despair and the adversary. To illustrate this, I recently shared an analogy with a young woman who has a fondness for dogs. I explained that dogs can detect feelings of anxiety and fear; when a person exhibits these emotions, the dog’s behavior often intensifies. However, when one approaches with calmness and confidence, the dog’s demeanor typically shifts. This reflects the biblical principle found in Romans, which emphasizes that we have not been given a spirit of fear but rather one of adoption, affirming our identity as children of God who are led by His Spirit.

I am currently engaging with the Amplified Classic version of the Bible, not to instill fear, but to emphasize the profound truth that we have received the spirit of adoption, which fosters a sense of sonship. This spirit allows us to joyfully cry out, “Abba! Father!” It is essential to understand that one should not feel intimidated by any presence, akin to a dog, within the safety of their father’s home. Many individuals identify as believers in Christ; however, they often fail to fully embrace and exercise the spirit of sonship. This spirit signifies access, a fundamental aspect of belonging to a family. In my household, my children enjoy unrestricted access to all areas, with the simple requirement of knocking on a door. If there are spaces they cannot enter, it indicates a lack of familial connection.

The essence of the spirit of sonship, as articulated in Romans 8:15, is that it is bestowed upon us through the Holy Spirit. This spirit does not merely provide comfort and healing; it also grants us access to the divine treasures of God. The joy that emanates from this spirit is crucial for us to claim the promises outlined in Scripture. The joy of the Holy Spirit acts as a vital lubricant, facilitating our connection to God’s promises, independent of external circumstances. Thus, the relationship between a believer and the fulfillment of God’s promises is intricately linked to the joy that the Holy Spirit imparts, which remains steadfast regardless of the surrounding environment.

The concept of joy, particularly in the context of adversity, is profoundly significant. In Job 22:29 of the King James Version, it is articulated that when individuals experience despair, there is a promise of upliftment. This scripture serves as a reminder that during times of widespread discouragement, believers are called to proclaim a message of hope and elevation. It is essential to recognize that this declaration is not merely a cliché; rather, it is rooted in a deep understanding of faith and the transformative power of joy. As believers, we are tasked with the responsibility to embody this joy, especially in environments where negativity and gloom prevail. Engaging in conversations that solely revolve around the challenges and misfortunes of life can lead to a sense of futility, particularly in contexts where such discussions do not yield any constructive outcomes.

It is crucial to acknowledge that the ability to share joy and hope is contingent upon possessing these qualities oneself. A believer cannot authentically convey a message of upliftment without first experiencing it internally. Therefore, the cultivation of joy within the believer’s life is of utmost importance. It is not a matter of striving to attain joy; rather, it is about recognizing that joy is inherently present, even when external circumstances threaten to diminish it. The challenge lies in resisting the forces that seek to rob us of this joy. By maintaining a steadfast commitment to our faith and embracing the joy that comes from it, we can effectively serve as vessels of hope and encouragement to those around us, transforming conversations from mere exchanges of despair into opportunities for spiritual edification and renewal.

Joy is not merely a goal for believers to strive towards; rather, it is an inherent quality that exists within them, waiting to be expressed. According to Galatians 5:22, joy is one of the fundamental aspects of the Holy Spirit’s presence in a believer’s life. It is important to note that many individuals profess to possess the Holy Spirit and identify as Christians, yet they often overlook the manifestations of this divine presence. While speaking in tongues is a significant experience for Pentecostal and charismatic Christians, it is essential to recognize that the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work extends beyond this singular act. The scripture emphasizes that the Holy Spirit cultivates various fruits in our lives, including joy, peace, love, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness. Therefore, if the Holy Spirit resides within us, we must grant Him the freedom to cultivate these qualities.

The experience of joy is not contingent upon external circumstances or the happiness of those around us. In my own journey through marriage, I have learned to nurture the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, even during challenging times when my spouse may not be in a cheerful mood. Early in our marriage, I expressed my dissatisfaction, feeling that happiness was elusive. My wife, however, pointedly reminded me that she was not responsible for my emotional state. This exchange highlighted a crucial lesson: true joy is an internal state that should not be swayed by external factors. By focusing too much on our surroundings, we risk stifling the joy that is already present within us. It is vital to cultivate this inner joy, allowing the Holy Spirit to manifest it, regardless of the circumstances we face.

My wife possesses a gentle and kind nature, yet she also exhibits a remarkable firmness and directness, qualities that I find essential in a partner. It is crucial to align one’s expectations appropriately, recognizing that the transformative work of the Holy Spirit within us should not be solely placed upon our spouses. Instead, we must understand that while we may desire our partners to fulfill certain emotional needs, it is ultimately the Holy Spirit that cultivates joy and fulfillment in our lives. This realization extends beyond personal relationships; for instance, one might feel discontented with a boss, yet it is vital to choose joy independently of external circumstances. The ability to find joy is a personal choice, rooted in the work of the Holy Spirit, rather than being contingent upon the actions of others.

I have come to understand that my happiness should not be solely reliant on my wife, despite her many admirable qualities. Early in our relationship, I recognized that seeking joy from another person can lead to frustration and disappointment. Many individuals inadvertently place unrealistic expectations on their partners, hoping they will provide a sense of completeness that only God can offer. This can lead to a draining dynamic, where one partner feels overwhelmed by the other’s demands for emotional sustenance. It is essential to remember that while we may look to others for support, our ultimate source of joy and peace is found in God. As we navigate the complexities of life, especially in challenging times, it is imperative to continually remind ourselves of this truth, ensuring that our focus remains on the divine source of our well-being.

Joy serves as a vital force that not only liberates individuals but also establishes a foundation for meaningful engagement with the tenets of the gospel. It is through this joy that believers can fully access the promises outlined in the Word of God. Without this joy, many of the covenant promises may remain out of reach for the faithful. It is crucial to highlight the significance of Isaiah 61, particularly verse three, which articulates the divine intention to comfort those who grieve in Zion. This passage emphasizes the transformative power of God’s provisions, offering beauty in place of ashes, joy in lieu of mourning, and a garment of praise to replace the spirit of heaviness. Such exchanges are designed to cultivate a community of righteousness, where believers are planted by the Lord for His glory.

The term “Zion” refers to the collective gathering of God’s faithful, a concept that resonates throughout both the Old and New Testaments. It acknowledges that even within this community, individuals may grapple with feelings of depression and despair. As articulated in Galatians 5:22, the Holy Spirit seeks to cultivate qualities that counteract external negativity, equipping believers to confront the challenges that threaten their mental and emotional well-being. The passage underscores the role of the Holy Spirit as a source of consolation, providing the oil of joy to those who mourn and offering a garment of praise to alleviate heaviness. This divine intervention is essential for fostering resilience and hope within the faith community, enabling believers to navigate their struggles with renewed strength and purpose.

Heaviness often manifests as a subtle temptation, gradually enveloping individuals rather than striking them suddenly. For those who may be experiencing the burden of heaviness during this service, it is important to recognize that the hand of God is reaching out to you at this very moment. This heaviness will dissipate by the conclusion of this gathering, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is essential to understand that heaviness develops incrementally, as one thought leads to another. Many years ago, the Holy Spirit guided me in addressing this heaviness, revealing its nature through my experiences in ministry and the responsibilities that arose after my marriage. As I navigated the complexities of managing a household, I found myself increasingly weighed down by various concerns.

Often, I would awaken to thoughts centered on unresolved issues, such as the prolonged wait for a promotion. This anticipation would trigger a cascade of worries, linking my aspirations to financial struggles, such as paying rent or school fees. I would envision how a promotion could alleviate these burdens, perhaps even covering my expenses. However, this line of thinking would lead me to dwell on perceived obstacles, including individuals I believed were hindering my progress. In turn, I would reflect on my spouse’s role in this situation, attributing my lack of advancement to their insufficient prayers. This intricate web of thoughts would accumulate, making it increasingly difficult to rise above the heaviness, as I found myself carrying the weight of numerous concerns and individuals. The Holy Spirit once illuminated this pattern for me, demonstrating how easily my mind could spiral into a cycle of burdensome thoughts.

The second entity attempts to integrate itself into the situation, but I firmly reject this intrusion, asserting that nothing shall diminish my joy. If I allow myself to dwell on the negative aspects, I will only compound the issues at hand, attributing blame to various individuals. This cycle of negativity can lead to a state where one feels incapable of prayer, as the weight of despair grips them tightly. Today, I declare that anyone under the influence of this spirit of heaviness will experience liberation; the grip of such heaviness is broken in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. While this heaviness may manifest in various forms, many individuals find themselves ensnared in a web of negative thoughts, failing to recognize the blessings that God is bestowing upon them. This mindset fosters a spirit of despondency, which can become overwhelmingly oppressive, akin to a heavy chain placed around one’s neck and then being cast into the depths of the ocean, leaving no chance for survival.

The adversary seeks to ensnare individuals in a tumultuous world, burdening them with numerous challenges that lead to feelings of despair and hopelessness. The current climate is fraught with crises, contributing to an unprecedented rise in depression, as many struggle under the weight of their burdens. Marriages falter, businesses decline, and individuals grapple with the heavy yoke of sorrow. However, the encouraging truth remains that the power of God, which lifts burdens and destroys yokes, is still accessible today. By resisting the negativity and reclaiming our joy, we can experience a profound transformation. I proclaim that joy is being restored to you in the name of the Lord Jesus; when the enemy cannot reach your spirit, it resorts to attacking your emotions.

It is crucial to remain vigilant against the influence of the spirit of heaviness as you navigate through this week. I urge you to remind those around you not to succumb to this oppressive spirit. Engage with your peers and affirm your commitment to reject the spirit of heaviness. It is essential to personalize this declaration, asserting, “I will not tolerate the spirit of heaviness.” For those participating online, I encourage you to express this sentiment in the chat, reinforcing your resolve. It is of utmost importance to consciously choose to resist the spirit of heaviness, as it thrives on negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, bitterness, regret, anger, and shame. These emotions serve as gateways for the spirit of heaviness to infiltrate your life, and it is imperative to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to identify and address these detrimental feelings.

When faced with challenging circumstances, it is easy to grant oneself permission to feel sorrowful, often thinking that if no one else is grieving, one should be entitled to their sadness. While acknowledging the reality of difficult situations is valid, it is vital to recognize that allowing oneself to dwell in sadness can inadvertently open the door to the spirit of heaviness. In the spiritual realm, once a door is opened, it remains so, and malevolent spirits are ever-watchful for such opportunities. Regardless of the trials you may be experiencing—be it marital strife, issues with children, or a difficult work environment—you possess the power to choose joy. Embracing joy invites the movement of the Spirit into your life, while negative emotions pave the way for the adversary’s influence, particularly through the spirit of heaviness, which can lead to debilitating conditions such as depression and anxiety attacks.

Individuals often find themselves incapacitated, unable to perform even basic tasks such as driving, particularly when faced with sudden emotional or psychological attacks. While therapists may provide explanations for these experiences, I, as a pastor, assert that these challenges stem from spiritual influences. It is crucial to recognize that individuals can inadvertently open themselves to these spiritual attacks. Therapists typically guide their clients through a process of identifying the origins of these vulnerabilities, effectively helping them to close the doors that have been opened. This therapeutic approach is valuable, and I fully support it; however, within the context of a church that delivers messages infused with both anointing and spiritual insight, there exists a unique opportunity for healing that transcends conventional therapy.

In this environment, I emphasize the importance of actively engaging with one’s thoughts, particularly when negative ones arise. It is essential to confront these thoughts immediately, binding them and invoking the protective power of Jesus’ blood over one’s mind. Passive acceptance of these thoughts can lead to a cycle of negativity that is difficult to break. While therapists assist in tracing the roots of these thoughts, the spiritual guidance offered in a church setting can provide a more profound level of healing. For those currently undergoing therapy, I encourage you to continue, as it is beneficial. However, I firmly believe that if one allows the Holy Spirit to take precedence in their life, they may find that the need for therapy diminishes over time. The Holy Spirit can serve as a source of strength and healing, and while I do not dismiss the value of medication, I advocate for the transformative power of spiritual intervention. To illustrate this point, I recall a conversation with a friend who shared a significant experience with me during my visit to another country earlier this year, which further underscores the impact of spiritual support in overcoming life’s challenges.

He experienced a significant period in his life during which he is currently undergoing restoration by God. His wife had either left him or he was asked to leave, a situation that reflects a cultural difference; in more developed nations, it is often the man who departs from the relationship. In contrast, in this context, it is common for men to be told to leave their homes. As society progresses, there is a hope that men will take on more responsibility, carrying their burdens with dignity. This notion of joy and development is essential, but it is a topic for another discussion. My friend embarked on a business venture with a partner, yet they faced numerous challenges that hindered their success. Despite their relentless efforts, both partners, who hailed from different countries but met in this one, encountered personal crises as their marriages crumbled. Tragically, one partner succumbed to despair and took his own life, while the other chose to persevere.

I recall my friend’s visits to Nigeria, where he would come to see me, and I would pray with him, often after services. During his brief stays, he would seek blessings and encouragement, especially after his wife had sent him away, leaving him feeling despondent. I reminded him to remain focused, suggesting that perhaps this was a divine opportunity for him to move forward. At one point, he expressed interest in a woman he had befriended, seeking my counsel to ensure accountability. I met with her, prayed with them, and reassured them that God’s will would ultimately prevail. Deep down, I sensed that God still had a purpose for my friend, and I encouraged him to trust in that divine plan.

A struggling business was ultimately sold for millions, and during our conversation, he expressed his regret that his friend had not held on a little longer. He recounted the tragic moment when he received the news of his friend’s suicide, revealing that his friend had taken his own life by hanging. I was present when he reached out to the widow, taking on the responsibility of supporting her and the children. In a poignant display of his commitment, he transferred tens of thousands of dollars for their school fees right before my eyes, demonstrating his newfound ability to provide for them. He remarked, “See, God has blessed us; now I can take care of his children,” yet his joy was overshadowed by the sorrow of losing his friend. This narrative serves as a reminder that we must share our own stories, just as we recount the tales of biblical figures like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In conclusion, it is essential to recognize that one cannot give what one does not possess.

Each individual has something valuable within them that must be acknowledged. Our world is in dire need of joy, and we are called to spread the gospel through the infectious joy that comes from the Holy Spirit. As we focus on reaching out to our neighbors and those who have yet to hear the message, we must understand that we can utilize the joy of the Holy Spirit as a powerful tool for evangelism. Ephesians 5:18 advises against drunkenness, urging believers to be filled with the Spirit. When filled, one is empowered to express joy through songs and hymns, fostering a spirit of gratitude towards God. This is a time for us to embrace and share the joy we have, as it is a vital resource for transforming lives and communities.

The consequences of permitting intoxication from the realm of glory are significant, particularly when one considers the necessity for external substances to evoke joy. In this context, it is essential to clarify that the joy I refer to is not derived from the use of substances or temporary pleasures. Instead, the true source of joy for a believer is the Holy Spirit, whose presence can profoundly influence one’s life. When one allows the Holy Spirit to work within, He can reach the deepest parts of the heart, igniting a joy that is divinely inspired. This joy is not contingent upon external circumstances; rather, it is a steadfast assurance that can be shared with others, making the act of preaching the good news a natural and effortless endeavor.

When one experiences the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, the inclination to share personal triumphs becomes overwhelming. For instance, receiving a promotion at work can evoke a sense of elation that compels one to share the news with friends, family, and even acquaintances. This exuberance is not merely a reflection of personal success but rather an expression of the joy that comes from recognizing God’s active role in one’s life. Even in challenging times, as illustrated in Habakkuk 3:17, the ability to maintain a joyful demeanor despite adverse circumstances can prompt inquiries from others. Such moments provide an opportunity to convey the source of that joy, which is the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, thereby spreading a contagious sense of happiness and hope to those around.

As a pastor, I have encountered a myriad of circumstances that require the delicate task of comforting those who are grieving. Whether it is a parent mourning the loss of a child, an individual grappling with the death of a loved one, or someone facing the devastation of losing a business or a home, I have witnessed a spectrum of reactions to such profound sorrow. One particularly poignant experience involved a woman whose daughter was brutally murdered in their own residence. When I held her hand, I was struck by the overwhelming intensity of her grief; it was a pain unlike anything I had ever encountered. Her cries resonated with a depth of anguish that seemed to threaten her very existence. In that moment, I found myself invoking the power of the Holy Spirit, recognizing that even amidst such despair, there exists a divine peace that transcends human understanding—a peace that cannot be purchased or replicated by any earthly means.

The transformative power of the Holy Spirit is a gift that believers must actively share with the world around them. It is essential to recognize that while substances like heroin or cocaine may offer fleeting relief, they ultimately fail to address the root of suffering and can lead to further destruction. The joy and comfort that the Holy Spirit provides are profound and lasting, offering true solace in times of distress. As followers of Christ, we have a responsibility to convey this message and to demonstrate the genuine hope that comes from faith. By doing so, we can encourage those who are lost in their search for fulfillment to turn away from temporary fixes and embrace the lasting joy that only the Holy Spirit can provide. It is through this divine connection that we can uplift others and guide them toward a more meaningful existence, free from the shackles of despair.
