Imagine New Visions, New Dreams

IMAGINE NEW VISIONS, NEW DREAMS

In Genesis chapter 15, we encounter a profound moment in the life of Abraham, where the Lord communicates with him through a new vision. The passage begins with God reassuring Abraham, stating, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield and your exceedingly great reward.” Despite this divine promise, Abraham expresses his concerns regarding his childlessness and the implications for his legacy, as he contemplates that his servant Eliezer of Damascus might become his heir. In response, God clarifies that Abraham’s heir will indeed come from his own lineage, not from a servant. To illustrate the magnitude of the promise, God takes Abraham outside and invites him to gaze at the stars, declaring that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky. This moment solidifies Abraham’s faith, and it is credited to him as righteousness, highlighting the significance of belief in God’s promises.

As we reflect on this scripture, it is essential to recognize the transformative power of faith and the importance of envisioning new possibilities. The narrative serves as a reminder that, like Abraham, we may face uncertainties and doubts, yet we are called to trust in a higher purpose. In sharing a personal anecdote, I recall how my belief in my earthly father’s capabilities instilled a sense of confidence in me. Even after his passing in 2010, I remember the dreams we held as children, fueled by the conviction that he could facilitate our aspirations, such as traveling abroad. This belief led us to take proactive steps, demonstrating how faith in a guiding figure can inspire us to pursue our dreams. As we gather today, let us pray for renewed visions and dreams, allowing the Spirit of God to move within us and transform our lives.

The committee in question consisted of only three members, and I believe it was formed after 1983. The report we received indicated that we should allow him some time, as there were many of us involved, and he was cautious not to offend anyone. Consequently, we were advised to be patient. I recall that some of my older brothers began to travel during that period, but fortunately, it was never my turn to do so under that regime. Nevertheless, I gained invaluable insights from that experience, which have significantly influenced my spiritual journey. This has instilled in me the belief that I should never impose limitations on God. He reassures us that if even earthly fathers, who are capable of wrongdoing, provide for their children when asked, how much more will the Father of all goodness respond to our needs?

In the scriptural passage we examined, God engaged in a dialogue with Abraham, who found himself questioning God’s ability to fulfill His promises. Despite God’s previous interventions in various aspects of his life, Abraham began to doubt when it came to the matter of having children. He expressed concern that, as time passed, he might have to accept that a stranger, Eliezer of Damascus, would inherit his estate. In response, God firmly rejected this notion and emphasized the necessity of establishing a connection with Abraham. This illustrates that for one to receive anything from God, there must be a profound alignment within one’s heart and mind. God’s actions are often contingent upon the visions and expectations we hold within ourselves, highlighting the importance of faith and belief in His capacity to deliver.

Last Sunday, I engaged in a discussion regarding the concepts of memory and imagination, highlighting their distinctions. Memory allows us to revisit and reflect upon past experiences, while imagination empowers us to envision and anticipate future possibilities. According to divine wisdom, both faculties have been bestowed upon us, yet it is crucial to recognize that the more significant of the two, particularly for those seeking a deeper relationship with the divine, is our imaginative capacity to foresee the future. In the divine realm, the constructs of past, present, and future do not exist as they do in our temporal experience; God exists in a fourth-dimensional reality. This understanding aligns with biblical teachings, which state that God calls forth things that do not exist as if they already do, illustrating His omniscience and timelessness.

The narrative of John the Baptist serves as a profound example of this concept. When he proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God that was slain before the foundation of the world,” he was articulating a truth that transcended time. Although Jesus had not yet been crucified, in the divine perspective, His sacrifice was already accomplished. This illustrates the nature of God’s reality, which operates beyond our three-dimensional understanding. God desires for us to engage with Him in this higher realm, as it is through this connection that we can grasp the visions He has for our lives. The absence of dreams signifies a lack of future possibilities, while the presence of new dreams heralds new opportunities. As we enter a new year, it is essential to embrace fresh aspirations and rejuvenate existing ones, allowing divine guidance to inspire us. The biblical verse from Hosea 8:7, which states, “Sow to the wind and you will reap a whirlwind,” emphasizes the importance of intention and action in our pursuits, reminding us that God’s plan is always to connect us with dreams that align with His purpose.

In the narrative surrounding Abraham, a significant moment occurs when God begins to accompany him on his journey. This divine companionship is marked by a pivotal scene where God invites Abraham to gaze upon the stars, an act intended to forge a deeper connection between them. The essence of this connection lies in the ability to envision possibilities beyond the immediate reality. God encourages Abraham to expand his imagination, suggesting that the multitude of stars symbolizes the countless descendants he would one day have. As Abraham gazes upward, he begins to see not just stars, but the faces of future generations, which stirs a profound sense of hope and potential within him. This transformative experience transcends the physical realm, igniting a spiritual awakening that allows him to grasp the vastness of God’s promises.

In Genesis 17, God reaffirms His covenant with Abraham, further enhancing his identity by changing his name from Abram to Abraham, which means “father of many nations.” This renaming serves as a powerful rebranding, reinforcing the vision of abundance that God has for him. Similarly, Abraham’s wife is renamed from Sarai to Sarah, symbolizing a shared journey into their new identities. The act of renaming signifies a profound shift in their lives, as they are now called to embody the very promises that God has bestowed upon them. However, this transition is not without its challenges; Abraham and Sarah may find themselves in situations where the reality of their circumstances—such as dining at a restaurant and being asked about their family—contrasts sharply with the grand titles they have been given. This juxtaposition raises questions about faith and the tangible manifestations of God’s promises, as they navigate the tension between their current state and the future envisioned by God.

The transformation of identity often requires immense courage, particularly when it involves a significant shift in how one perceives oneself and is perceived by others. In the case of Abraham, the act of changing his name to reflect a new identity was not merely a superficial alteration; it was a profound declaration of faith and a rebranding orchestrated by divine intervention. Imagine the reaction of his neighbors upon hearing this news. They might have approached him with skepticism, questioning his sanity and wondering if he had lost touch with reality. Yet, this change was essential for Abraham, as it represented a pivotal moment in his journey towards realizing a greater purpose. God was not only reshaping his identity but also expanding his capacity to envision a future that transcended his current circumstances.

The concept of a “new normal” is crucial in personal development and spiritual growth.

It signifies a shift in mindset, allowing individuals to break free from the limitations imposed by their past experiences and societal expectations. The biblical principle of transformation through the renewal of the mind emphasizes that true change begins internally. Without the cultivation of new dreams and visions, one cannot hope to create a different future. The scripture from Habakkuk underscores the importance of articulating one’s vision clearly, as it serves as a guiding light for action and purpose. The narrative of Abraham, as recounted in Romans, illustrates that embracing a new identity and vision is foundational to achieving one’s destiny, reinforcing the idea that our perceptions and beliefs shape our reality.

The passage in Romans chapter 4, particularly verses 17 and 18, eloquently articulates the profound nature of faith and divine promise. It states, “As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations,” emphasizing the belief in God’s power to bring life to the seemingly lifeless and to call forth existence from non-existence. This scripture illustrates the essence of hope, as it recounts how, against all odds, Abraham maintained his faith, ultimately becoming the father of many nations in accordance with God’s declaration. This narrative serves as a reminder that God seeks to transform the prevailing images within our hearts, especially as we embark on a new year. It is a call for individuals to embrace a fresh perspective, to envision possibilities that may have previously seemed unattainable.

In the context of prophetic insight, Habakkuk chapter 2, verse 1, reinforces the idea that divine communication often manifests through imagery rather than mere audible words. The prophet expresses his intention to stand watch and await God’s revelation, indicating that understanding can come through visualizing what God intends to convey. This notion suggests that perceiving God’s messages may involve imaginative contemplation rather than solely auditory experiences. As we enter a new season, it is essential to recognize that new dreams and visions can emerge through intentional actions, such as sowing seeds of faith and hope. However, it is crucial to approach this with discernment, particularly in light of the challenges faced in society, where some may exploit faith for personal gain. Thus, cultivating genuine aspirations requires both spiritual insight and practical wisdom.

In this congregation, we do not conform to the typical practices often associated with fundraising. It is important to clarify that when I mention the concept of sowing a seed, I am not implying a solicitation for financial contributions. I recognize that some may feel inclined to disengage at this point, anticipating the conclusion of the service. However, I urge you to remain engaged, as our mission here transcends monetary gain; we are dedicated to imparting blessings. This church serves as a conduit for uplifting individuals, and I trust that you grasp the essence of my message. This morning, I am addressing a crucial topic that warrants your full attention, as it pertains to the cultivation of new visions and aspirations.

To illustrate the significance of this concept, I encourage you to consider the act of sowing seeds as a metaphor for nurturing potential. Reflect on a seed, whether it be a maize seed or an apple seed, and ponder the question of how many fruits or crops can emerge from that singular seed. This exercise is not merely an intellectual endeavor; it is a powerful way to ignite your imagination. As articulated in John 12:24, the principle of transformation through sacrifice is evident: a grain of wheat must fall to the ground and die in order to yield a bountiful harvest. It is essential to recognize that the seeds entrusted to us by God are not just physical entities; they symbolize the divine potential for new beginnings and dreams. God, as the ultimate creator, has endowed us with these seeds, and when they are sown into the fertile ground of opportunity, they possess the inherent capacity to multiply and flourish.

The process of multiplication often remains a mystery, yet it is a fundamental principle rooted in scripture. It is my firm belief that the seed I hold today represents the potential harvest of tomorrow. God has endowed us with a diverse array of seeds, each designed to expand our minds and enhance our capacity for greater imagination. Certain concepts may remain elusive until we have sown specific seeds; for instance, exposure itself can serve as a seed, as many ideas will not manifest unless we have encountered them or something akin to them previously. Additionally, acquiring skills can be viewed as a form of sowing; consider the curriculum vitae of a successful CEO. It should inspire you to cultivate your own skills, propelling you toward aspirations of reaching similar heights.

As we approach the year 2016, it is crucial to reflect on the seeds we wish to plant that will ignite our imagination and reveal the path God has laid out for us. When we invest financially, for example, by writing a check in accordance with divine principles, we align ourselves with the promise that, as long as the earth endures, the cycle of seedtime and harvest will persist. God does not impose limitations on the potential returns of our financial seeds, as they can yield results far beyond our expectations. However, it is essential to recognize that without seeds—be they in relationships, skills, or finances—there is nothing for God to multiply. As we move forward, we must cultivate the ability to envision possibilities where none seem to exist, recognizing the potential for greatness within our humble beginnings. Reflecting on 1 Peter 4:10-11, we are reminded of our responsibility to utilize our gifts for the benefit of others, thereby contributing to the greater good.

Every individual has been endowed with unique gifts, and it is imperative that these gifts are utilized to serve one another, acting as responsible stewards of the diverse grace bestowed by God. As articulated in verse 11, if one is to speak, it should be as a representative of God’s message; if one is to serve, it should be done with the strength that God provides. This approach ensures that in all endeavors, God is glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom eternal praise and authority belong. The essence of this teaching encourages individuals to view their talents and resources as seeds, contemplating the potential they hold. It is essential to recognize the skills and abilities one possesses and to seek avenues for their application, as the Bible instructs us to be diligent stewards of God’s manifold grace.

In this context, it is beneficial to engage with those around you, inquiring about their own “seeds,” which may encompass degrees, skills, time, financial resources, or acts of service. God desires to breathe life into these offerings, expanding their impact first within our minds, leading to tangible manifestations in the world. Furthermore, it is crucial to remain attuned to the Holy Spirit, who serves as the custodian of divine visions and dreams. As stated in John 2:28, in the latter days, God will pour out His Spirit upon all people, enabling the young to prophesy and the elderly to dream. The Holy Spirit possesses the authority to unveil God’s intentions and future plans, and by fostering a vital connection with Him, individuals can access new dreams and visions that align with God’s purpose.

In the second chapter of 1 Corinthians, specifically from verses 9 to 14, it is articulated that the profound truths and divine plans that God has prepared for those who love Him are beyond human perception. The scripture emphasizes that these revelations are not accessible through ordinary means; rather, they are disclosed to us through the Holy Spirit. The passage underscores the unique role of the Spirit, which delves into the depths of God’s wisdom, revealing insights that are otherwise hidden from the human heart and mind. It draws a parallel between human understanding and divine understanding, stating that just as a person knows their own thoughts through their spirit, only the Spirit of God can comprehend the thoughts of God.

Furthermore, the text highlights the transformative power of receiving the Spirit of God, distinguishing it from the spirit of the world. This divine Spirit enables believers to grasp the gifts that God has generously bestowed upon them. It is through the Spirit that individuals can align their hearts and minds with God’s intentions, fostering a deeper understanding of their purpose and potential. The message encourages believers to actively engage with the Holy Spirit, as this engagement is crucial for unveiling God’s plans in their lives. The act of waiting on the Holy Spirit is presented as essential for capturing these revelations, suggesting that a deeper relationship with the Spirit will lead to a clearer understanding of God’s will and a more profound realization of the dreams He has for each individual.

In 2 Corinthians 3:18, the scripture articulates that we, with unveiled faces, reflect the glory of God as if gazing into a mirror. This profound passage emphasizes that through the Spirit of God, we undergo a transformation from one degree of glory to another. It is essential to recognize that this transformation requires a period of waiting upon the Lord. Many may wonder how to effectively wait on the Holy Spirit. One practical approach is to dedicate time to fasting, perhaps once a week, and to spend the initial moments of each day in worship and meditation on the Word of God.

The relationship with the Holy Spirit can be likened to a marriage, where outward appearances may suggest closeness, yet true intimacy is lacking. Just as a couple may live together but remain emotionally distant, many believers may attend church and engage in worship without fostering a genuine connection with the Holy Spirit. This lack of intimacy can hinder spiritual conception, preventing new visions and dreams from being birthed in one’s life. It is crucial to cultivate a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, as this intimacy is the key to experiencing the fullness of His transformative power. In 2016, believers are encouraged to seek and enjoy a more profound connection with the Holy Spirit, allowing for spiritual growth and renewal.

Understanding the concept of waiting on the Holy Spirit can be quite profound, as I recently attempted to convey to my nine-year-old daughter. During a car ride, she inquired about the meaning of a steward, prompting me to draw parallels with our dining experiences at restaurants. I explained that the individuals who serve us in these establishments are stewards, dedicated to ensuring our satisfaction. I asked her if she had ever noticed how these stewards maintain a professional demeanor, refraining from distractions such as chatting or laughing on their phones while attending to guests. This led to a discussion about the importance of their role, emphasizing that their primary focus during our meal is to cater to our needs, always ready to check in and ensure everything is satisfactory.

This analogy serves to illustrate the relationship we should cultivate with the Holy Spirit, particularly when faced with significant decisions in our lives. I encouraged her to consider whether she actively seeks guidance from the Holy Spirit, especially during moments that may seem trivial but could influence more critical choices. It is essential to recognize that while the Holy Spirit is always present, ready to assist us, we often become preoccupied with our own distractions, neglecting to listen for divine direction. I posed a challenging question: how can one claim to be a believer while consistently failing to take the time to wait on the Holy Spirit? This reflection invites a deeper understanding of our spiritual responsibilities and the necessity of being attentive to the guidance that is readily available to us.

It is essential to recognize that the true power of Christianity cannot be fully realized without a deep reliance on the Holy Spirit. Reflect on the last time you committed to fasting, not for personal gain or in times of distress, but solely to seek a closer connection with God through prayer. The prevalent attitude among many is to turn to God only in moments of crisis, viewing Him merely as a source of relief rather than as a partner in a sacred covenant. This transactional approach creates a superficial relationship, where God is seen as a tool for achieving personal ends. However, God desires a more profound connection, one that transcends casual interactions and embodies the essence of a covenant—a commitment that is not merely contractual but deeply relational.

Covenant, in this context, signifies a profound agreement sealed not with ink but with the blood of Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God. This blood serves as the ultimate seal of the covenant, establishing a relationship that demands respect and commitment. Yet, many individuals fail to honor this covenant by living carelessly, which can lead to a perception that God lacks power in their lives. It is difficult for God to inspire and guide those who cannot dedicate even a small portion of their day to Him. Nevertheless, I pray that in this new season, the Holy Spirit will ignite a passion within your heart, drawing you closer to God. I declare that you will conceive something extraordinary in your life, and I encourage you to embrace this divine potential with faith and anticipation.

The understanding of pregnancy extends beyond the physical manifestation of a growing belly; it encompasses the moment a woman receives a positive result from a pregnancy test, signifying the beginning of a new life within her. This concept parallels the workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives, who continuously seeks to instill new visions and dreams within us. However, it is common for individuals to doubt this divine influence, much like a woman who may struggle to accept her pregnancy despite the evidence. There are those among us who are already nurturing these new aspirations, yet may find it challenging to believe in their potential due to external circumstances. The example of Abraham serves as a powerful reminder; he placed his faith in God even when tangible results were absent, and this unwavering belief was credited to him as righteousness, elevating him to the status of a friend of God. In this season, it is imperative to embrace a similar dimension of faith, trusting that your dreams will flourish under divine guidance.

Furthermore,

it is essential to recognize that dreams inspired by God are imbued with a purpose that aligns with His kingdom.

If these aspirations are divinely placed in your heart, there is a significant reason behind them. It is crucial to encourage those who may feel isolated in their struggles, particularly those who faced challenges in 2015, whether in launching a business or overcoming obstacles in their endeavors. The fear of failure can be paralyzing, akin to a woman experiencing labor pains who might question her desire to become a mother again. However, it is vital to differentiate between the pain of birthing new possibilities and the despair of stagnation. The journey may be fraught with difficulties, but the promise of new life and purpose is worth the struggle, and with the Holy Spirit’s support, there will be no premature endings to these dreams.

This morning, I invite you to engage in a conversation with someone present, as the discomfort you are currently experiencing is a precursor to a transformative new beginning in your life. Do not shy away from this challenge; remember that His grace is more than adequate to support you. Embrace this moment, for soon you will witness the dawn of a new chapter and an elevation in your circumstances. Many women who have experienced childbirth often declare, “I will not go through this again,” yet, two years later, they find themselves welcoming the experience once more. This is because the pain of labor ultimately gives rise to profound joy, compelling them to return. Similarly, the struggles you face will not culminate in failure; they will not spell the end of your business or career, nor will they jeopardize your marriage, as affirmed in the name of the Lord Jesus. Instead, this pain will usher in a new era filled with immeasurable joy, peace, and progress, all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Let us raise our hands in gratitude to Jesus today and offer Him our blessings.
