PRACTICAL WAYS TO ENGINEER NEWNESS

A transformative journey begins at this very moment, and it is fundamentally influenced by how one approaches the beginning of the year. The foundational scripture for our new teaching series, “A New Me,” is drawn from Isaiah 43, specifically verses 18 and 19. This passage was shared during our New Year’s Eve service, and for those who were unable to attend, I encourage you to access the message and engage with it repeatedly. We plan to upload the specific message to YouTube later today, and the entire service is already available for viewing. If you are particularly interested in the message, you can easily navigate to that segment, which lasts approximately 50 to 55 minutes. It is essential to immerse yourself in this teaching until it resonates deeply within your spirit, as it has already garnered around 12,000 views since last night.

Isaiah 43:18-19 states, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?” This inquiry is crucial, as it emphasizes the importance of awareness in our spiritual journey. During the New Year’s Eve service, I highlighted that God operates within both logical and illogical realms, and it is vital to understand Him in both contexts. He encourages us to plan and think critically while simultaneously possessing the power to transcend our processes and expedite our destinies. God is the one who instructs us that diligence is necessary for sustenance, yet He also provided manna to those who were unable to work due to their transitional state. Life often places us in periods of transition, but God remains present in those moments, whether we find ourselves in the depths of a valley or on the heights of a mountain. His unwavering presence assures us that He can orchestrate all things for our good, provided we earnestly seek Him.

It is essential to recognize that you possess an understanding of His intentions and the actions He is about to undertake.

Kindly inform your neighbor that it is time to release the burdens of your struggles. One prevalent challenge, particularly at the start of a new year, is the tendency to establish New Year resolutions. While I do not oppose the concept of New Year resolutions, I share a sense of fatigue regarding them. Often, these resolutions are formulated based on our perceived ability to exercise self-discipline, with declarations such as “I will do this more” or “I will stop doing that.” However, a more profound perspective is offered by scripture, which suggests that the term “repentance” holds greater significance than mere resolution. Repentance signifies an internal transformation, a genuine turning away from past behaviors, in contrast to the superficial commitment implied by resolution.

The essence of who we are fundamentally influences our actions; without a transformation of self, attempts to enact change may prove futile. For instance, if I claim not to be a dog yet attempt to bark occasionally, the incongruity of my actions will eventually reveal my true nature. This analogy reflects the behavior of many individuals who, upon observing trends or practices that appear appealing, feel compelled to imitate them without a genuine alignment to their identity. The decision to become a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, for example, should stem from a deep-seated commitment to that identity, making adherence to a Bible study plan a natural extension of one’s beliefs. Conversely, if one remains a mere drifter in their journey, the resolve to implement meaningful changes becomes increasingly challenging, as the lack of a solid foundation undermines the ability to commit to a new path.

Faith originates from the heart, and as articulated in James chapter 2, particularly verse 17, it is evident that faith and works must coexist harmoniously. When one concentrates solely on actions without the underpinning of faith, the result is a disconnection that renders those actions ineffective. Works are tangible and physical, while faith is an internal conviction that resides within the heart. The essence of belief is rooted in the heart, making it paramount to prioritize matters of the heart over mere actions. The core issue is not simply about what one does, but rather the condition of one’s heart. If one aspires to experience a transformative new life, it necessitates a corresponding transformation of the self, which can only occur through an internal change facilitated by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit for those who believe. This process must unfold from the inside out; one cannot genuinely progress externally while remaining stagnant internally.

Moreover, while altering habits can indeed lead to a change in life circumstances, it is crucial to recognize that a misguided direction can still result in unfavorable outcomes. Many motivational speakers and life coaches emphasize the importance of habit change as a pathway to life improvement. However, if one modifies their habits without addressing the underlying direction, they may find themselves aimlessly drifting. To illustrate this concept, I recall an experience from my single days when my church organized a singles outing to Taco Bay Beach. At that time, my swimming skills were limited, and I was unaware of the potential dangers of the water. This experience served as a poignant reminder of the importance of not only changing habits but also ensuring that one’s direction is aligned with their goals to avoid becoming a drifter in life.

In my past experiences working offshore, I learned the importance of proper swimming training, particularly when employed by one of the major oil companies. This training included obtaining swimming licenses, which ultimately contributed to my improved swimming abilities. I urge you not to judge my current skills based on my earlier experiences. Recently, I took my family to Taco Bay beach, located off the coast of Lagos, where we enjoyed playing in the water. One notable aspect of this beach is its tendency to carry away items left near the water’s edge. On one occasion, my daughter inadvertently left her slippers at the shoreline, and when we returned, only one slipper remained. Just as I was contemplating the loss of the second slipper, the waves unexpectedly returned it to me, prompting a moment of gratitude for what seemed like a small miracle.

As we continued to play in the water, I was reminded of my earlier struggles with swimming. Despite my limited skills, I found myself in a situation where I suddenly lost all visibility, engulfed in darkness. My instincts kicked in, and I attempted to wave my hand, only to realize that it was submerged and unresponsive. It became clear to me that something was amiss, and as I struggled beneath the surface, I sensed a presence behind me. When I was finally grasped by someone, a wave of relief washed over me, as I understood that in such precarious situations, the instinct to fight back could lead to further danger. This experience served as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of the ocean and the importance of remaining calm in the face of adversity.

An individual unexpectedly seized me and propelled me forward, and together we ascended, a process that took considerable time. It was during this ascent that I became acutely aware of the depth of my predicament. Eventually, I caught sight of a ray of light, prompting me to reflect on our surroundings. I began to realize that we had been submerged for an extended period, and the situation was becoming increasingly serious. It was then that I recognized the person who had jumped from his boat—a fisherman—who had inadvertently contributed to my drifting far from the shore. Meanwhile, members of the Singles fellowship were anxiously searching for me, uncertain of my whereabouts. At that time, I was not yet a pastor, and their concern was palpable, as they speculated about my fate, whether I had wandered off or remained submerged in the water. The rapid current had swept me away so swiftly that they were left in a state of confusion.

The fisherman ultimately managed to bring me back to the shore, where a gathering of fellowship members awaited, ready to celebrate and give thanks to God for my safe return. The atmosphere shifted to one of calmness as everyone quietly exited the water, reflecting on the day’s events. Following this incident, during the remainder of our picnic under the shelter, a strict rule was enforced prohibiting anyone from entering the water again. This experience, which occurred approximately 25 years ago, remains etched in my memory, primarily because it served as a profound lesson in divine intervention and the importance of personal agency. I came to understand that life often mirrors the currents of water; if left unchecked, individuals can drift aimlessly, losing control over their destinies. Many find themselves adrift, lacking the skills or awareness to navigate their circumstances, leading to destructive patterns that can ensnare them, much like the currents that once carried me away.

In contemplating the nature of existence, one may observe the paradox of individuals who, in their pursuit of fulfillment, sell everything they possess only to invest in pursuits that ultimately lead to their own destruction. This reflection serves as a poignant reminder that life is replete with lessons, and one significant insight gleaned from such experiences is the realization that while we may drift through life, this aimlessness is not aligned with the divine purpose intended for us. As the new year unfolds, it is imperative to engage in introspection and pose the critical question: “What direction is my life taking?” The commencement of a new year provides a unique opportunity to assess one’s current position in life and juxtapose it against desired aspirations.

Many individuals find themselves in a state of drift, akin to being carried along by the currents of an ocean, as opposed to the stillness of a swimming pool. Life, much like the ocean, is fraught with unpredictable currents that can easily divert one from their intended path. It is essential to recognize the necessity of establishing a clear direction; without it, one risks arriving at an undesired destination. When we advocate for the setting of goals for the year ahead and emphasize the importance of beginning with a spiritual foundation, we are underscoring the need for a conscious effort to envision a renewed self. The upcoming 21-day fast is designed to harness spiritual and emotional energy, allowing individuals to resist the currents that may lead to unproductive drifting. It is crucial to acknowledge that the excuse of lacking time is often a misrepresentation; rather, it is a matter of prioritization. Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, and the true measure of importance lies in how one chooses to allocate that time.

It is a straightforward concept that one confronts their own lack of understanding when they claim that prayer holds no significance for them. The reality is that when something truly matters to an individual, they will allocate time for it. Each day consists of 24 hours, and how we distribute that time reflects our priorities. A life that progresses requires a conscious sharing of time with these priorities in mind. Conversely, a life that remains stagnant or aimless tends to squander time without purpose. If one desires to advance in life, it is essential to concentrate on what is important and to allocate the available hours accordingly. In contrast, those who choose to drift through life often fail to invest their time wisely, instead allowing it to slip away unproductively.

As we embark on a new year, it is crucial to identify and prioritize the direction we wish to take in our lives. The aspiration should be to rise and soar, much like an aircraft, rather than to remain grounded or adrift. The beginning of the year presents an opportunity to reassess and balance the ledger of our lives, ensuring that we are aligned with our true purpose. In the context of spiritual growth, the scripture emphasizes that through Christ, we are made anew, shedding the old and embracing the new. This transformation is not merely a change in status but a divine reconciliation that empowers us to engage in the ministry of reconciliation. By understanding this profound truth, we can better navigate our lives, ensuring that we are not only aware of our past but also committed to a future filled with purpose and direction.

The concept of reconciliation, particularly in the context of our relationship with God, emphasizes the profound nature of salvation through Jesus Christ. This reconciliation signifies not only our restored relationship with the divine but also highlights the imperative for us to assist others in achieving the same reconciliation. The term “reconciliation” extends beyond theological discourse; it is a fundamental principle in various professional fields, notably in accounting. For those familiar with the intricacies of financial management, reconciliation involves ensuring that financial records are accurate and balanced, a task that is essential for maintaining the integrity of financial operations.

In the realm of accounting, particularly in banking, reconciliation is a critical process that involves comparing actual financial statements with expected outcomes to identify discrepancies. This process requires meticulous attention to detail, as accountants must analyze the differences between what is recorded and what should be recorded. When discrepancies arise, adjustments must be made to align the records with the established standards, ensuring that the financial picture is accurate by the end of the reporting period. This practice underscores the importance of reconciliation not only as a spiritual concept but also as a vital operational procedure in the financial sector, illustrating the interconnectedness of these ideas in both faith and profession.

At the end of each month, it is essential to review the activities and transactions that have taken place, allowing for necessary adjustments to be made. This process often reveals discrepancies, such as incorrect postings or instances where individuals may have engaged in unethical practices, often referred to as “window dressing.” Such evaluations are crucial as they help identify negative behaviors, fraudulent activities, misappropriations, and unintentional errors. It is important to recognize these issues to maintain integrity and accuracy in financial reporting and management.

In the context of spiritual and personal growth, the teachings from 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 emphasize the importance of reconciliation with God. Verse 18 highlights that God has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ and entrusted us with the ministry of reconciliation. This concept extends beyond spiritual matters; it serves as a reminder for individuals to regularly assess their alignment with God’s standards and purposes. Just as a pilot must make course corrections to navigate an aircraft effectively, individuals must also ensure they are not drifting away from their intended path. Failing to conduct regular reconciliations can lead to significant oversights, such as being unaware of outstanding debts or financial imbalances, which can ultimately result in failure. Therefore, it is imperative to engage in this reflective practice to ensure a balanced and purposeful approach to both personal and professional endeavors.

In the journey of life, it is essential to realign oneself with the intended path, much like an aircraft must adjust its course to ensure a safe landing at its designated airport, such as Heathrow, rather than veering off course to an unintended destination like Afghanistan. This metaphor illustrates how even minor deviations can lead to significant misalignments in various aspects of life, including relationships and careers. As we enter the year 2020, it is imperative to seek divine grace and favor for a thorough reconciliation of our lives with God’s plan. This process of course correction is vital, as it allows individuals to assess their current circumstances against the divine blueprint, identify discrepancies, and take the necessary steps to realign themselves.

The concept of reconciliation extends beyond superficial resolutions often made at the start of a new year; it embodies a deeper, ongoing transformation that is essential for spiritual growth and fulfillment. True newness is not merely about a one-time commitment to faith but involves a continuous journey of self-improvement and alignment with God’s will. As we reflect on various facets of our lives—spiritual, mental, physical, emotional, and intellectual—it becomes clear that gaps may exist that hinder our progress. The beginning of January presents an opportunity to confront these gaps and challenge ourselves to bridge them, fostering a renewed sense of self that aligns with our divine purpose. By addressing these areas, we can cultivate a more holistic and fulfilling existence, ultimately glorifying the transformative power of faith.

In the past decade, numerous individuals have faced significant challenges largely due to the pervasive ignorance that permeates their lives. When one possesses greater experience and engages in conversation with someone less informed, it often becomes apparent through subtle gestures, such as shaking one’s head, that the latter’s misconceptions may hinder their professional advancement. This reality underscores the importance of mentorship, as it serves to bridge the gaps in knowledge and understanding. As we enter the year 2020, it is crucial to reflect on who will guide us in various aspects of our lives—spiritually, emotionally, and professionally. Mentorship and coaching are essential components for success, as no champion in any discipline achieves greatness without the support of a coach. The most accomplished individuals, such as Anthony Joshua, who recently secured another boxing title, exemplify this principle; they rely on coaches to refine their skills, demonstrating that even the best require guidance.

As we embark on this new year, it is imperative to avoid drifting aimlessly through life without direction or accountability.

Each individual must take responsibility for their personal growth and seek out mentors who can facilitate course corrections and foster reconciliation in their lives. The call to action is clear: do not allow yourself to remain stagnant in 2020; instead, strive for a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to self-improvement. In closing, I urge everyone to engage in introspection regarding their spiritual journey. Are you evolving to reflect the qualities of divinity? The scripture from the New King James Version highlights the importance of removing the veil of ignorance that obscures understanding, urging us to confront our own limitations and strive for enlightenment.

In the context of the Old Testament, it is noted that the veil obscuring understanding is lifted through Christ. However, even today, when the teachings of Moses are examined, a veil remains over the hearts of many. This veil can only be removed when one turns towards the Lord. The Lord embodies the spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is present, there exists true liberty. As we approach God with unveiled faces, reflecting upon His glory as if gazing into a mirror, we undergo a transformation into His likeness, progressing from one degree of glory to another, facilitated by the spirit of God. To bridge the spiritual gaps in our lives, it is essential to recognize the necessity of removing these veils.

The experience of Moses serves as a poignant illustration; when he encountered God, his face radiated divine glory, prompting the Israelites to request that he cover his face with a veil, as they could not bear to witness such brilliance. This veil, as described in scripture, transitioned from Moses’ face to the hearts of the Israelites, resulting in a contemporary Jewish experience where many remain unable to perceive Christ within the Old Testament, thus remaining entrenched in Judaism. The scripture asserts that upon entering into a relationship with Christ, this veil is lifted, allowing individuals to behold the glory of God, which in turn reveals their true identity. It is crucial to understand that without a vision of a renewed self, transformation cannot occur. There exists a distinction between one’s current circumstances and the divine purpose God has intended. To facilitate this reconciliation, one must begin with a renewed self-perception. Engaging in transformative conversations, such as the one Jesus had with Peter in Matthew 16:18, can significantly alter the course of one’s life.

In the passage from Matthew 16:17-19, Jesus addresses Simon, also known as Peter, affirming his blessed status. He emphasizes that this revelation did not come from human understanding but was divinely imparted by God the Father. Jesus declares that Simon will henceforth be known as Peter, which means “rock,” signifying a foundational role in the establishment of His church. He assures Peter that the forces of evil will not overcome it, and He grants him the keys to the kingdom of heaven, empowering him with the authority to bind and loose on earth, which will be reflected in heaven. This pivotal moment serves as a profound transformation for Peter, marking a significant shift in his identity and purpose.

Similarly, in Acts 9, we witness another transformative encounter, this time involving Saul, who later becomes known as Paul. Initially, Saul is depicted as a fierce persecutor of the early Christians, actively seeking to imprison those who followed “the Way,” a term used to describe the followers of Jesus. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. This encounter not only alters his identity but also redirects his mission from one of persecution to one of evangelism and discipleship. Both narratives illustrate the power of divine revelation and the potential for radical change in one’s life and purpose through a personal encounter with God.

The perception of individuals belonging to a particular group, often referred to as “the Way,” was a significant aspect of the narrative surrounding Saul’s journey. His mission was to identify and apprehend these individuals, ultimately leading to their prosecution. This task was sanctioned by the high priest, who provided him with a letter authorizing him to seek out the followers of the Way in Damascus. However, during his journey, Saul experienced a profound encounter that altered the course of his life. As he traveled, he was struck down and confronted by a voice that called out to him, questioning his actions of persecution. In that moment, Saul recognized the authority of the voice, which he instinctively acknowledged as Lord, leading him to inquire about the identity of the speaker.

The revelation that followed was transformative; the voice identified itself as Jesus, the very figure Saul had been persecuting. This encounter marked a pivotal turning point in Saul’s life, as he had previously relied on his abilities and zeal in a misguided manner. Instead of contemplating ways to enhance his efforts in persecution, such as acquiring a faster horse or sharper weapons, Saul was confronted with the reality of his misguided direction. God sought to reconcile him, urging him to redirect his life towards a purpose aligned with the gospel rather than against it. Following this divine intervention, Saul was temporarily blinded and instructed to seek out Ananias for healing and guidance. This series of events ultimately led to Saul’s transformation into Paul, setting him on a path that would fulfill his true destiny as a proponent of the Christian faith, as detailed in Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9.

As we enter 2020 and the new decade, the pursuit of genuine reconciliation becomes paramount. Will you seek the God who transformed Simon into Peter, Saul into Paul, and enabled Elisha to succeed Elijah, signifying a complete reconciliation of purpose? If you identify with Thomas, remember that he did not remain a skeptic; could this year be the turning point for you, where doubts are dispelled? A crucial question to consider is what will catalyze your spiritual transformation, as it is essential to cease drifting. Please turn to your neighbor and encourage them to stop drifting, for there is a divine purpose awaiting realization in your life, and now is the opportune moment. I would like to draw your attention to last Sunday’s message titled “Press into His Presence,” delivered powerfully by three of our pastors at the Island Centre. As we embark on this period of prayer and fasting, it is vital to recognize that fasting helps us subdue our flesh, engage in the ministry of reconciliation, and align ourselves with the divine speed necessary for our destinies. There is nothing more effortless than the fulfillment of God’s will when He is ready to act; thus, it is imperative to identify and commit ourselves to the divine plans He has for our lives.
