RECEIVING HEAVEN’S SIGNAL

In the narrative found in 1 Kings 18, we are reminded of the importance of being attuned to the metaphorical clouds that gather in our lives, particularly in this year characterized by extraordinary advancements. The focal scripture for this year is Isaiah 60:1-5, which serves as a guiding principle. Additionally, we will delve into the account of Elijah in 1 Kings 18, where he exemplifies the necessity of being observant to the signs that God provides. In December, a divine message was imparted to me, urging the congregation to remain vigilant regarding the types of clouds that are forming in their lives. This theme of clouds will be explored in our teachings throughout January, as Ecclesiastes 11:3 reminds us that when clouds are full, they release their contents upon the earth. Many individuals may feel overwhelmed when faced with adverse circumstances, unaware of the process involved in cultivating the clouds of blessing in their lives. For those who missed last Sunday’s sermon, I encourage you to access the message on YouTube, as it provides valuable insights into how one can intentionally influence the clouds that surround them.

Today, I wish to underscore the notion that clouds serve as signals, and it is imperative to position ourselves this year to receive these heavenly messages. In verses 41-44 of the same chapter, we observe Elijah instructing Ahab to eat and drink, for he hears the sound of an impending rainstorm. Ahab complied, while Elijah ascended Mount Carmel, where he humbly bowed down and fervently prayed, placing his face between his knees. This posture signifies deep supplication and earnestness in seeking divine intervention. Elijah then sent his servant to survey the sea, demonstrating his expectation of the fulfillment of God’s promise. This account illustrates the profound connection between prayer, faith, and the recognition of divine signals, urging us to remain alert and responsive to the spiritual indicators that may herald significant changes in our lives.

He ascended to survey the situation and declared that there was nothing to be seen. Reiterating his observation, he instructed his servant to ascend once more and gaze towards the sea. The servant complied, returning with the same report of emptiness, repeating this seven times. It was only on the seventh occasion that he announced the sighting of a small cloud, comparable in size to a man’s hand, emerging from the sea. The prophet then commanded him to relay a message to Ahab, urging him to prepare his chariot and depart before the impending rain hindered his journey. As recorded in verse 45, the atmosphere shifted dramatically, with the sky darkening under the weight of clouds and wind, culminating in a torrential downpour. Ahab hastily rode away to Jezreel, as the once modest cloud transformed into a formidable storm, bringing forth abundant rain.

This narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the often-overlooked signs of divine intervention and blessing. It is entirely possible to witness a seemingly insignificant cloud, yet fail to comprehend the magnitude of what it heralds. The arrival of Jesus on Earth exemplifies this phenomenon; despite the presence of the divine in their midst, many in Bethlehem were oblivious to the significance of His arrival. This illustrates a broader truth: individuals may find themselves in a position where they are unable to recognize the opportunities and blessings that surround them. Conversely, there exists a posture that allows one to discern the workings of God, enabling them to engage with the unfolding opportunities. In the Old Testament, the cloud is emblematic of God’s presence and guidance, as evidenced by His manifestation as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness.

In the wilderness, a cloud consistently enveloped the vast multitude accompanying Moses, providing both protection and guidance. Picture the scene: approximately two million individuals traversing the arid landscape, shielded from the relentless heat of the sun by this divine cloud. Its significance extended beyond mere shelter; it served as a divine signal for movement. God instructed Moses that the people should remain stationary unless the cloud shifted. When the cloud began to move, even in the stillness of night, the people were required to awaken and follow its lead. This necessity for vigilance and readiness stands in stark contrast to the impatience often exhibited in modern life, where even minor delays, such as waiting at a traffic light, can provoke frustration and agitation.

The teachings of Jesus in Luke 12:54-56 further illuminate the importance of discernment in recognizing divine timing. He pointed out the ability of the people to predict weather changes based on observable signs, yet they struggled to perceive the spiritual significance of their times. This lack of discernment is likened to hypocrisy, as they could interpret the natural world but failed to understand the spiritual implications surrounding them. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reinforces this notion by stating that there is a time and season for every purpose under heaven. As we navigate through 2023, it is essential to cultivate the ability to discern our own seasons and to align ourselves with divine timing, ensuring that we are responsive to the movements of God in our lives.

In 2023, I pray that you align yourself with divine timing, invoking the precious name of Jesus. The prophet Elijah exemplified a profound sensitivity to God’s guidance, which enabled him to discern the divine agenda. He proclaimed that he could hear the sound of an impending abundance of rain, prompting him to remain vigilant and send his servant to observe the horizon seven times. It is crucial to recognize that some individuals may find themselves disheartened after only a few attempts, feeling frustrated with God. However, had Elijah succumbed to frustration after the third attempt, he would not have continued to send his servant. This serves as a reminder that God often desires us to remain patient, watchful, and engaged in prayer.

As we embark on the twelfth day of our fasting journey this January, I have encountered the challenges that accompany such spiritual discipline, particularly while traveling. The temptation to indulge in food while seated next to fellow passengers can be overwhelming, yet I find solace in prayer and the simplicity of requesting water. These experiences, particularly during my flights between cities and Lagos, have been both interesting and testing. It is essential to understand that if you have not joined us in fasting, this message is particularly relevant for you. To enhance your spiritual sensitivity in 2023, it is imperative not to take your spiritual life lightly. I will elaborate on the significance of sharpening your spiritual edge, which is vital for discerning God’s movements and acting at the appropriate times. Cultivating this discernment allows us to navigate life with greater accuracy, avoiding presumptions about God’s will and the seasons we encounter. Let us embrace the principle of watchfulness and prayer, affirming that it is indeed time to engage in this vital practice.

It is important to acknowledge the significance of spiritual practices such as fasting and prayer, particularly in the context of communal support. As we approach the opportunity to fast, it is essential to encourage those around us to participate, even if they may have already consumed breakfast. While it may be too late for some to join in today, the invitation remains open for tomorrow. It is crucial to recognize that the day has progressed, and at this point in Nigeria, it is already 10 AM, marking the conclusion of today’s fasting opportunity. Therefore, we should focus on the future and the collective journey ahead, praising God for the strength and guidance He provides.

The principle of “Watch and Pray” is a vital aspect of our spiritual lives, as illustrated in Matthew 26, where Jesus faced one of the most challenging moments of His earthly existence in the Garden of Gethsemane. In this passage, He expressed profound sorrow, stating, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful even unto death,” highlighting the depth of His anguish. This experience serves as a reminder that everyone will encounter their own Gethsemane moments, where trials and tribulations are inevitable. Jesus emphasized the importance of prayer, warning that a lack of it can lead to vulnerability in the face of temptation and hardship. The resilience of individuals in the face of adversity varies greatly; while some may stand firm and overcome challenges, others may falter. This disparity often reflects the strength of the foundations built in one’s life, whether in personal relationships, business endeavors, or spiritual commitments.

One of the fundamental ways we fortify our spiritual foundation is through the acquisition of revelation knowledge, which is cultivated in the sacred practices of prayer, fasting, worship, and remaining in the presence of God. Jesus illustrated this concept by likening a well-constructed house to one built on solid rock, emphasizing that it will withstand the fierce onslaught of storms, winds, and waves. These elements symbolize the trials, tribulations, and temptations that inevitably test the strength of our spiritual foundation. As we embark on this New Year, it is imperative that we take our spiritual disciplines seriously, for they provide us with the depth and resilience necessary to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

In the Gospel of Matthew, we find a poignant moment where Jesus, in His anguish, implores His disciples to remain vigilant in prayer. He expresses His sorrow, urging them to stay awake and support Him during His time of need. This narrative serves as a reminder of the importance of being alert and discerning as we enter a new year filled with potential. It is crucial to be aware of the emotional and spiritual climates surrounding us, as they can significantly influence our lives. Engaging in prayer and fasting allows us to identify and address any negative affections or overwhelming emotions that may arise, ensuring that we maintain clarity and focus as we navigate the months ahead.

It is often the case that individuals may find themselves making poor decisions without fully understanding the underlying reasons for those choices. These decisions are frequently influenced by misguided sources, leading to a cycle of misjudgment. Instead of allowing these negative influences to accumulate until they reach a breaking point, engaging in prayer and fasting can serve as a powerful means to dismantle inappropriate attachments. This spiritual practice enables one to attune to the correct signals and discernment necessary for making sound decisions. It is my hope that this becomes a personal testimony for you, and I encourage a resounding affirmation of faith in this truth.

In the biblical context, God is actively cultivating a community of vigilant individuals dedicated to prayer. Jesus consistently urged His disciples to engage in both prayer and vigilance, emphasizing that these two practices are designed to complement one another. This principle is evident in the actions of the prophet Elijah, who prayed fervently while simultaneously sending his servant to observe the physical realm. This dual approach underscores the importance of being aware of both spiritual and physical realities. By fostering a heightened sense of discernment through prayer and vigilance, one can effectively bridge the gap between spiritual insights and tangible occurrences, thereby positioning oneself advantageously for the opportunities that God is preparing. This proactive stance allows for the identification of potential opportunities before they become apparent to the wider community.

Ancient cities were often fortified with watchtowers and watchmen who were tasked with the critical role of observing the horizon for any signs of invaders. This vigilant practice is echoed in various scriptures that reference watchmen stationed on towers, whose duty was to alert the city of impending threats. The importance of such vigilance extends beyond mere physical defense; it serves as a metaphor for the necessity of prayer and watchfulness over one’s family and business. Without these protective measures, one becomes vulnerable to unforeseen dangers, akin to a city lacking walls and watchtowers. By maintaining a posture of prayer and awareness, individuals can discern potential threats from a distance, allowing them to adjust their strategies and communicate effectively with their support systems.

In the context of family dynamics, the act of prayer and observation can yield significant insights.

For instance, one may receive divine signals or dreams that reveal concerns regarding loved ones, prompting proactive measures. It is not uncommon for parents to express their awareness of their children’s activities, often reminding them that their actions are not hidden from divine scrutiny. This approach fosters an environment of open communication, where children feel encouraged to share their experiences. By simply observing behavioral changes or interactions, a parent can initiate conversations that clarify situations, thereby guiding their prayers and interventions. This blend of spiritual vigilance and practical observation creates a protective framework that nurtures both awareness and understanding within the family unit.

It is essential to recognize that certain matters are of such significance that one cannot afford to ignore them. We are not merely passive observers; rather, we are actively seeking signs of destiny that guide our paths. The act of watching is not a trivial endeavor; it is a proactive engagement that enables us to discern and prepare for the opportunities that life presents. This concept of vigilance is crucial, as it allows us to pick up on subtle cues that may otherwise go unnoticed. The importance of this practice cannot be overstated, and it is vital to understand the implications of being watchful in our spiritual journey.

In Ephesians 6:18, the Apostle Paul emphasizes the necessity of constant prayer coupled with vigilance, urging believers to remain alert and persistent in their supplications. When Paul instructs us to pray always and to be watchful, he is highlighting the interconnectedness of prayer and awareness. It is not sufficient to engage in prayer without being attuned to the dynamics of our surroundings, particularly in our relationships. For instance, one may be fervently praying while neglecting to notice the emotional state of a spouse who has been unhappy for an extended period. This lack of awareness can lead to ineffective prayers that lack substance and understanding. True spiritual engagement requires a balance of prayer and attentiveness, as demonstrated by Jesus, who exemplified the practice of watching and praying. It is imperative to integrate our emotional intelligence into our spiritual practices, rather than relying solely on ritualistic prayers devoid of genuine insight.

In the context of spiritual warfare, it is essential to identify the specific adversary one is confronting. Often, the true challenge lies not in external forces but within oneself, as individuals may neglect their responsibilities and fail to focus on critical aspects of their lives. This notion is echoed in the exhortation to remain vigilant in prayer, as articulated in Nehemiah 4:9, where the prophet emphasizes the importance of both supplication and watchfulness. Nehemiah and his companions were acutely aware of their adversaries, dedicating themselves to prayer while simultaneously maintaining a watchful eye on potential threats. This dual approach underscores the necessity of being proactive in both spiritual and practical matters, particularly in the realm of business, where one must be attuned to financial realities rather than solely relying on prayer.

The narrative of Elisha and the sons of the prophets in 2 Kings 6 further illustrates the importance of divine guidance in managing resources effectively. As they sought to expand their capabilities, the incident with the borrowed axe head serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with neglecting oversight. The exclamation of the prophet’s apprentice, “Alas, master, for it was borrowed,” highlights the gravity of losing valuable resources without the foresight to prevent such losses. When divine presence is acknowledged and sought, individuals are better equipped to navigate challenges and avoid unnecessary setbacks. The expectation of simply “bouncing back” after financial losses is unrealistic if one does not engage in diligent stewardship and seek prophetic insight to guide their decisions.

The act of borrowing money, equipment, or machinery can lead to significant consequences, as illustrated in the story of Elisha. He was approached with a request to identify the location where an axe head had fallen into the water. The underlying issue for many believers lies in their inability to observe and discern the circumstances surrounding their challenges. Elisha demonstrated a solution by cutting a branch from a tree and placing it at the precise spot where the axe head had sunk. This act serves as a metaphor for the importance of awareness and attentiveness in our spiritual lives. Had the individual not been able to specify where the axe head fell, he would have faced the burden of repayment, highlighting the necessity of vigilance in our actions and responsibilities.

The narrative emphasizes that ignorance and negligence can hinder divine intervention in our lives. There are situations where individuals may find themselves in a position where God’s assistance seems unattainable due to their lack of awareness or refusal to heed spiritual guidance. For instance, in the context of marriage, a person may engage in behaviors that ultimately lead to its dissolution, necessitating a painful learning process. This reality raises questions about the suffering experienced by Christians, which can stem from various sources, including ignorance or a failure to mature spiritually. It is crucial to understand that being a Christian does not exempt one from life’s hardships; rather, it is through vigilance and prayer that one can navigate challenges effectively. The biblical principle that Jesus learned obedience through suffering serves as a reminder that believers, too, may learn valuable lessons through their trials, provided they remain watchful and engaged in their faith.

In examining the dynamics of prayer and observation within certain religious communities, particularly among Christians, it becomes evident that there exists a notable disparity between the two. Individuals often engage in fervent prayer yet exhibit a lack of awareness regarding critical industry indicators. For instance, when preparing for a job interview, many fail to conduct basic research about the prospective employer, such as understanding the company’s recent achievements, strategic objectives, or overarching vision. This lack of preparation can lead to awkward situations during interviews, where candidates are unable to articulate their alignment with the company’s goals or demonstrate how their skills could contribute to its success. Such scenarios highlight a disconnect between spiritual devotion and practical engagement with the professional landscape.

Moreover, this phenomenon is not limited to individual experiences but reflects a broader cultural tendency. A conversation with an HR professional revealed that applications from Nigerian candidates often contain a humorous reliance on divine intervention rather than concrete qualifications or strategic planning. This reliance on faith, while admirable, can undermine the seriousness with which candidates approach their professional aspirations. In contrast, organizations that prioritize observation and analysis, such as consulting firms, consistently produce insightful reports and forecasts that inform their strategic decisions. At the Elevation Church, for example, the Vantage Forum serves as a platform for discussing future trends and preparing for upcoming events, yet participation can be lacking. This illustrates the need for a balanced approach that combines spiritual practices with diligent observation and preparation in the business realm.

It has been observed that while individuals may actively participate in business-related activities, they often neglect the importance of communal prayer, particularly when it comes to spiritual warfare. The tendency to engage in prayer only when it pertains to breaking the strongholds of adversaries is concerning. It is essential to emphasize that consistent participation in prayer, especially as a congregation, is vital for spiritual growth and resilience. This afternoon, there will be a collective prayer session, and it is imperative that everyone attends. However, it is crucial to approach this with a mindset of community rather than isolation, as collective prayer fosters a stronger spiritual connection and support system.

Furthermore, the relationship between prayer and vigilance cannot be overstated. A lack of prayer coupled with excessive consumption of media can lead to a state of defeat, while an overemphasis on watching without prayer can result in superstition and the proliferation of unfounded conspiracy theories. This phenomenon was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where many individuals turned to various news outlets, such as Fox and CNN, to piece together narratives that often lacked a spiritual foundation. The tendency to prioritize media consumption over spiritual engagement can lead to a distorted perception of reality, where even basic truths may be dismissed. It is important to recognize that a carnal mindset struggles to comprehend spiritual matters, as these require discernment that transcends mere observation.

The individual described is one who is primarily influenced by the five senses, allowing these sensory experiences to dictate their actions and perceptions. When one focuses intensely on observation, they become governed by these senses. However, by engaging in both watching and prayer, a harmonious balance can be achieved between the physical and the spiritual realms, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of life’s challenges. This balance is essential for a well-rounded perspective, and it is important to acknowledge the divine presence in this journey, as expressed in the phrase “glory be to Jesus.”

To illustrate this concept, consider the example of a group of individuals who set out on a mission to an island, believing it to be a place ripe for spiritual outreach. They dedicated themselves to prayer, sought to overcome spiritual obstacles, and gathered resources for their endeavor. However, upon reaching the nearest city and chartering a boat, they were filled with enthusiasm, singing hymns and preparing for their mission. A conversation with the boat’s pilot revealed a startling truth: the island was uninhabited, and their preparations were misguided. This oversight highlights the importance of thorough investigation and discernment, akin to the biblical account of Elijah sending his servant to scout the land, emphasizing that spiritual fervor must be complemented by practical awareness and understanding.

Elijah’s experience of returning seven times serves as a profound reminder of the importance of vigilance in prayer. While engaged in prayer, it is crucial to remain observant and aware of the circumstances surrounding us, whether in our professional lives or personal relationships. It is essential to take stock of our environment and not merely participate in prayer gatherings without a clear understanding or discernment of the issues at hand. The frustration of being a Christian who prays without insight can be disheartening. Therefore, it is imperative to combine fervent prayer with keen observation, as this synergy can lead to empowerment and triumph. I encourage everyone to embrace this principle, as it is through high levels of prayer and watchfulness that we can truly experience the power and victory that we seek in our lives, particularly in the year 2023.

In the context of specific prayers, such as those for fertility, it is vital to remain attentive to the signs and trends that may influence outcomes.

Monitoring one’s cycle and being aware of familial patterns can provide critical insights that inform our prayers. For instance, if there are recurring issues within a family lineage, it is essential to actively pray against these familiar spirits to prevent their re-emergence. This approach mirrors the practices in medical settings, where healthcare professionals inquire about family histories to identify potential health trends. Similarly, in the financial realm, recognizing and analyzing trends is crucial for making informed decisions. As we seek to understand what God is communicating and doing in our lives, businesses, and communities in 2023, it is vital for us as a church to position ourselves to discern His will. This is why I will be addressing significant topics with the congregation on the last Sunday of this month, as we collectively seek to understand our divine purpose and direction.

It is important to understand how to engage with the divine message and discern what God intends for our church in this new season. As we remain patient and observant, we must pay attention to the global circumstances that influence our positioning. This approach should also apply to your personal decisions; rather than following the crowd or reacting impulsively to the actions of others—such as those who are leaving the country without careful consideration—it is crucial to approach these matters with prayerful reflection. We have encountered individuals who, in their haste, have found themselves in difficult situations abroad, and we are increasingly weary from responding to their calls for assistance. Therefore, it is essential to engage in this process thoughtfully and with spiritual awareness.
