RELATIONSHIP AUDIT

In the second chapter of Mark, I will reference verses 1 through 5. After a period of time, Jesus returned to Capernaum, and word quickly spread that He was present in a particular house. As a result, a large crowd gathered, filling the space to the point where there was no room left, not even at the entrance. In this setting, Jesus began to preach to the assembled multitude. Among those present were four men who brought a paralyzed individual to Him. However, due to the overwhelming crowd, they were unable to reach Jesus directly. Demonstrating remarkable determination, they removed part of the roof above where Jesus was located and lowered the bed on which the paralytic lay. Upon witnessing their faith, Jesus addressed the paralytic, saying, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” It is important to note the emphasis on “their faith,” which signifies the collective belief and effort of those who brought the man to Jesus.

Today, I wish to delve deeper into the implications of this passage, particularly in the context of what I have termed a “Relationship Audit.” As we conclude this series, it is essential to revisit the theme of our relationships, a topic we began exploring last Sunday with Pastor T’s insights. My focus today is on the necessity of evaluating our relationships for their effectiveness. If you find yourself lacking a meaningful relationship with Jesus, it is crucial to reassess that connection with your Creator. Our lives are fundamentally about the relationships we cultivate, and these vital connections significantly influence our journey toward our destinies. While the paralytic faced a physical ailment, many among us may grapple with emotional struggles that are equally debilitating. It is imperative to recognize that, regardless of the nature of our challenges, the presence of Jesus in our lives can lead to profound healing and transformation.

Many individuals can relate to the challenges faced in various aspects of life, whether it be in business, personal relationships, or emotional struggles. The burdens of mismanaged emotions, sexual issues, or career difficulties can weigh heavily on one’s spirit, leading to a profound realization that a change is necessary. It is essential to acknowledge that everyone encounters their own set of challenges, often referred to as “stuff.” In the case of a particular individual who was paralyzed, the path to his miracle was obstructed by a lack of connection to the help that was available. Despite the presence of Jesus nearby, the crowd was so dense that access to assistance seemed impossible.

However, this individual was fortunate to have four remarkable friends who recognized the urgency of his situation. These companions demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination, willing to go to great lengths to ensure their friend received the help he needed. Their audacity led them to devise a plan that involved tearing through the roof of a house, fully aware of the potential consequences they might face. Their actions were not merely reckless; they were driven by a profound belief in the possibility of healing. When they lowered their friend down to Jesus, it was not just the paralytic’s condition that caught Jesus’ attention, but rather the faith exhibited by these four men. This act of faith ultimately resulted in the paralytic receiving forgiveness and healing, illustrating the power of connection and belief in the face of adversity.

The scripture illustrates a profound moment when Jesus recognized the faith of those who sought healing for their friend. It is essential to clarify that their actions were not merely bold or unconventional; they were driven by a deep-seated faith that was evident and discernible. This faith was so palpable that Jesus acknowledged it, leading Him to extend His healing power to their friend. In our own lives, we often encounter challenges and beseech God for deliverance, yet sometimes the divine response is not a direct removal from our struggles but rather an encouragement to forge meaningful connections.

Each individual we encounter serves as an extension of God’s presence, and through these connections, we can experience His assistance and guidance.

Moreover, the significance of relationships cannot be overstated, as they play a crucial role in shaping our success and overall well-being. The biblical principle that a three-fold cord is not easily broken underscores the importance of divine involvement in our connections with others. When we engage with fellow human beings, we are, in essence, engaging with God Himself. This is why communities, such as The Elevation Church, are more than mere congregations; they represent a family where every relationship is vital. The connections we nurture can either propel us toward success or hinder our progress, emphasizing that success is rarely achieved in isolation. Therefore, it is imperative to cultivate relationships that align with our aspirations and values, as they are instrumental in determining the trajectory of our lives.

In the journey of life, one may encounter individuals who proclaim their success yet lack meaningful connections with others. Such a scenario is fundamentally implausible, as true success is invariably linked to vital relationships that propel us toward our destinies. Each accomplishment can be traced back to specific connections that serve as gateways to opportunities or, conversely, pathways to failure. The essence of human interaction is that people act as doors; some lead us into realms of growth and abundance, while others may hinder our progress and lead to disappointment. Engaging with the right individuals can expand our horizons, allowing us to transcend our limitations and embrace a more expansive identity.

It is insufficient to merely seek out pleasant individuals; one must also discern the deeper potential within relationships. The friends who brought the paralytic man to Jesus in Mark Chapter 2 exemplified this understanding; they were not just kind-hearted but possessed a profound awareness of destiny and the audacity to act on their faith. This highlights the importance of recognizing the potential of relationships, as many individuals struggle in life due to their inability to identify and cultivate meaningful connections. Developing the skill to assess the potential of relationships is crucial, as it can significantly influence one’s trajectory and overall success in life.

I recall vividly the initial encounter I had with my pastor, and I often reflect on how crucial it was to approach our relationship with respect and integrity. Had I allowed any feelings of disloyalty or dishonor to cloud my judgment, or failed to appreciate the significance of our connection, the trajectory of my life could have been markedly different. For those who are just beginning their careers, I urge you to heed this advice: the individuals you are currently working alongside are pivotal to your professional journey. Recently, my older brother celebrated his 50th birthday, and during the festivities, I was reminded of a man I have known since the early 1990s, who played a vital role in my brother’s first banking position. This individual served as my brother’s manager, and their relationship has endured for nearly three decades, illustrating the profound impact that professional connections can have on one’s destiny.

The bond between my brother and his former manager has remained strong despite both having left the organization nearly twenty years ago. Their destinies intertwined in a way that has fostered a lasting partnership, as evidenced by the manager’s heartfelt remarks at the birthday celebration. He expressed his bewilderment at the depth of their connection, which has evolved to resemble that of brothers. My brother often seeks his advice on various ventures, and even after all these years, he continues to refer to him as “Oga,” a term of respect that underscores their enduring relationship. This dynamic has not only enriched my brother’s life but has also opened doors for numerous opportunities. As I reflect on my own journey, I recognize the importance of acknowledging and nurturing the relationships that God places in our lives, much like the invaluable connection I have had with my pastor for the past 25 years. Early on, I was granted the insight to appreciate the potential within these relationships, which has undoubtedly shaped my path.

I found myself reflecting on a conversation I had with him last night, recalling the moments we shared together. As I sat there, I revisited the memories of how we first met during my teenage years, while he was in his early twenties. Our discussions were filled with a sense of connection that led me to believe he was someone worth following. This realization has shaped my journey ever since. It is essential to recognize the potential within relationships, nurture those that are beneficial, and discern which ones lack promise. These three skills are crucial; they help prevent the squandering of time and energy on unworthy connections. For instance, consider the man who was brought to Jesus for healing; had he been careless in his relationships, he might have missed out on the transformative experience that changed his life.

The essence of our experiences often lies in the connections we forge.

While solutions to our challenges may exist, it is our relationships that often lead us to them. Establishing a connection with God serves as our primary relationship, while the connections we cultivate with others provide depth and meaning to that divine relationship. The wisdom found in Proverbs 27:17 illustrates this beautifully, stating that “iron sharpens iron,” emphasizing the importance of surrounding ourselves with those who can enhance our lives. Similarly, Proverbs 13:20 warns that walking with the wise leads to wisdom, while associating with fools can lead to destruction. This underscores the idea that solitary wisdom is insufficient; it is through meaningful connections that we can truly grow and thrive.

The quality of our lives is significantly enhanced when we possess a deeper understanding of the world around us. To achieve this understanding, it is often essential to cultivate the right relationships and connections. The wisdom that guides us is frequently found in the insights of others, and sometimes, this wisdom is imparted to us through divine means. The biblical text in 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns us against the dangers of associating with those who may lead us astray, emphasizing that negative influences can corrupt our morals and character. The importance of nurturing positive relationships cannot be overstated, as they play a crucial role in shaping our decisions and overall well-being.

Throughout the scriptures, we encounter numerous narratives that illustrate the consequences of poor choices influenced by misguided associations. For instance, the story of Amnon and Tamar in 1 Samuel 13 highlights how a seemingly trivial connection can lead to devastating outcomes. Amnon, driven by his misguided feelings, received harmful advice from Jonadab, which ultimately resulted in tragedy and the loss of his life. In contrast, the relationship between Naomi and Ruth serves as a powerful example of how meaningful connections can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Ruth, a Moabite woman, found her place in the lineage of Jesus through her bond with Naomi, demonstrating that even those who appear to be outside the divine plan can be woven into it through significant relationships. This narrative underscores the profound impact that our connections can have on our destinies.

The genealogy of Jesus, particularly the mention of Ruth, serves as a profound reminder of the significance of connections and relationships in our lives. Ruth’s inclusion in this lineage highlights the importance of managing our relationships wisely, discerning which connections hold promise and which do not contribute to our purpose. This process of auditing our relationships is crucial for fulfilling our destinies. In examining the scriptures, particularly John chapter 15, we find Jesus articulating the essence of this concept. He identifies Himself as the true vine, with God as the vine dresser, emphasizing that branches that do not bear fruit are removed, while those that do are pruned to enhance their productivity.

In this context, Jesus encourages believers to remain connected to Him, asserting that a genuine relationship with Him is essential for spiritual vitality. He reassures those who may be questioning their connection with Him that there is always an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment. The act of staying connected is not merely a matter of routine; it is a conscious decision to avoid the disconnection that sin can cause. Jesus emphasizes that true fruitfulness is only possible through abiding in Him, as He states that apart from Him, one can accomplish nothing. This profound truth underscores the necessity of maintaining a close relationship with Christ to achieve a life that bears much fruit.

It has been emphasized that our foremost relationship is with God, and it is possible that some individuals attending church this morning did so merely for the sake of tradition or to ease their conscience after a hectic week. In various aspects of life, one might find themselves thinking, “I attended church on Sunday, which should suffice to maintain my peace for the week.” Some may even approach their attendance as a form of negotiation with God, believing that their presence in church serves as a sufficient offering to ensure divine favor. However, this perspective reduces the significance of worship to a mere obligation rather than recognizing it as a vital means of nurturing our connection with God.

Engaging in fellowship with others not only strengthens our bonds with one another but also reinforces our relationship with the divine source of our existence.

Moreover, it is crucial to understand that maintaining this connection with Jesus is essential for a fulfilling spiritual life. Jesus metaphorically describes Himself as the vine, with believers as the branches, indicating that a continuous connection allows for the flow of divine sustenance that shapes our destinies. He further illustrates the role of a vine dresser, who performs two key actions: removing unfruitful branches and pruning those that bear fruit. This analogy serves as a reminder that we must regularly assess our relationships and spiritual connections, eliminating what does not contribute positively to our growth while refining and enhancing what does. It is imperative to engage in this process of evaluation, encouraging one another to discard the unproductive elements in our lives and to nurture the fruitful aspects that lead us closer to our purpose in Christ.

In any fruitful endeavor, it is essential to recognize that there remains work to be done, particularly in discerning which relationships should be severed and which ones require careful pruning. Some relationships may no longer serve a constructive purpose and should be eliminated entirely, while others, despite their potential, may need to be refined. The act of pruning is particularly relevant for individuals who are committed to productivity and wish to continue yielding positive outcomes. Just as a tree draws nutrients from its source, it is crucial to guide its growth in a desired direction. For instance, when cultivating certain horticultural trees, one must remove branches that divert nutrients away from the main trunk to ensure upward growth. This process of pruning is not merely about cutting away; it is about shaping the tree to reflect its inherent beauty and purpose.

Pruning serves as a metaphor for managing relationships, where the goal is to enhance the quality of connections rather than diminish them. Even in relationships that are fundamentally positive, certain behaviors or tendencies may need to be addressed to prevent the dilution of grace and productivity. For example, a friendship that includes both prayer and gossip may require the elimination of the latter to preserve the integrity of the former. By identifying and removing these excesses, individuals can maintain vital connections while ensuring that their energies are directed toward growth and fulfillment. Ultimately, effective pruning allows for a clearer understanding of one’s path and prevents the scattering of resources, enabling individuals to fully express the potential that has been bestowed upon them.

Is anyone still present with me today? I inquired whether you are still engaged with my thoughts. The concept of pruning may initially appear counterintuitive, as it suggests that one must eliminate excesses in order to fully realize their potential. This encapsulates the essence of my message: true potential cannot be unlocked without first addressing and removing the superfluous elements in our lives. Pruning involves a careful evaluation of our connections to ensure they yield fruitful outcomes. It is important to acknowledge that this process can be painful. When one prunes a tree, for instance, the sap flows, symbolizing the emotional turmoil that can accompany such decisions.

Consider the scenario where you must establish boundaries in a business relationship that has begun to blur. When you assertively communicate the need to maintain a strictly professional connection, both parties may experience a surge of emotions, akin to the flow of sap from a pruned tree. This emotional response signifies the difficulty of cutting ties with the excesses that threaten to complicate the relationship. However, by undertaking this act of pruning, you create an environment where the business can thrive, leading to mutual satisfaction and progress toward your respective destinies. It requires considerable emotional strength and audacity to redefine relationships and insist on maintaining clarity in professional interactions. Without such measures, relationships can become entangled, leading to deterioration and dissatisfaction.

Pruning can often be a challenging and emotionally taxing endeavor, akin to the sap that oozes from a tree when its branches are severed. Similarly, when one decides to prune a relationship, it can feel as though one is experiencing emotional wounds. It is essential to prepare oneself for this process, as embracing the necessary changes may lead to emotional discomfort. However, it is important to recognize that this bleeding is not permanent; just as blood eventually clots, so too will the emotional turmoil subside over time. In some instances, resolution may come within a few days, while in others, it may take a week or even a month. Nevertheless, this period of adjustment can ultimately redefine the relationship for years to come, making the temporary pain worthwhile.

When evaluating the state of a marriage, the act of taking stock can resemble the process of pruning, which may initially shock the relationship but ultimately leads to a reset. It is crucial to acknowledge that while some individuals may struggle to understand this concept, many resonate with the experience of emotional pruning. As we reflect on the importance of assessing our relationships, we can turn to the parable found in Luke 13:6-9, which illustrates the necessity of evaluating the fruitfulness of our connections. The parable recounts a man who, after three years of seeking fruit from a fig tree and finding none, instructs the keeper of the vineyard to cut it down. This serves as a poignant reminder that some relationships may no longer yield the nourishment we seek, and it may be time to let go of those that drain our energy without providing any meaningful return.

The sentiment expressed reflects a moment of frustration regarding unproductive relationships, where the speaker questions the value of maintaining connections that yield no benefits. The dialogue suggests a sense of urgency in addressing the issue, as the vine dresser contemplates cutting down a tree that has not borne fruit for three years. However, the response emphasizes patience and the importance of nurturing the relationship before making a final decision. The vine dresser proposes to dig around the tree and fertilize it, indicating that there may be underlying issues preventing growth that need to be addressed rather than hastily severing ties.

In the context of the Kingdom of God, the message underscores that relationships should not be discarded lightly, as unfruitfulness can often stem from deeper, unresolved issues rather than a lack of compatibility. The act of digging around the tree symbolizes the need to explore and understand the foundations of a relationship, suggesting that with effort and care, it may still yield positive results. The speaker warns against impulsive actions, such as divorce or separation, which may arise from fleeting emotions rather than a thoughtful evaluation of the relationship’s potential. Ultimately, the emphasis is on the necessity of commitment and the willingness to invest time and effort into nurturing relationships, as this can lead to fruitful outcomes.

I possess a unique ability to identify issues that are not functioning optimally, as well as to recognize areas that are performing well. However, my focus tends to gravitate more towards the problems that require attention. This inclination towards uncovering underlying issues has become a regular aspect of my life, and my wife has often found herself at the center of this scrutiny. As we celebrate thirteen years of marriage, I have come to see myself as somewhat of an expert in revealing these matters. My passion for fostering growth and prosperity drives this tendency, as I genuinely desire to see things flourish. Early in our marriage, I proposed to my wife that we implement a system akin to a monthly performance review (MPR) at home, similar to what she experienced in her banking career. I could sense her skepticism at the time, but my intention was clear: I wanted to cultivate an environment where we could assess our progress and ensure that we were nurturing our relationship and personal growth.

The concept of conducting an MPR at home may seem unconventional, yet it highlights a critical point about the importance of evaluating our personal lives with the same diligence we apply in professional settings. It is perplexing that individuals often invest significant effort into performance reviews at work while neglecting to assess the health of their personal relationships. Many find themselves in relationships that drain their energy without ever questioning their value or effectiveness. This lack of scrutiny can lead to unfruitful connections, whether with family, friends, or colleagues. It is essential to take the time to uncover the foundations of these relationships, asking critical questions about their dynamics and potential for growth. Rather than hastily severing ties, we should consider the wisdom of patience and exploration, as exemplified in the teachings of Jesus, who encourages us to give relationships another chance. By uncovering the underlying issues, we can discern where to extend grace and mercy, ultimately allowing us to address any deficiencies and foster a more fruitful existence.

He suggested that one should first uncover the underlying issues, then proceed to nurture the relationship by providing essential care and attention. This nurturing process involves supplying the vital emotional nutrients that may have been depleted over time, such as affection, concern, empathy, and a willingness to be vulnerable. By extending grace and demonstrating a commitment to the relationship, one can observe the potential for growth and transformation, much like tending to a garden that requires time and care to flourish.

This concept is illustrated through the story of a man who initially sought a divorce from his wife. After consulting with a counselor, he was advised to approach the situation differently. The counselor, along with a lawyer, devised a plan that involved the man showing affection and kindness to his wife, such as hugging her and expressing love daily, all while preparing for the divorce in the background. However, as he engaged in this nurturing behavior over time, he found himself rekindling his feelings for her. Ultimately, he decided to halt the divorce proceedings, realizing that their relationship had the potential to thrive once more. This narrative serves as a reminder of the importance of revitalizing our vital connections with those we care about.
