This June marks the tenth anniversary of that incident, which was undeniably tragic. A few years prior, my wife and I had invested in a beautiful home located on the Mainland of Lagos, where I was serving as an Associate Pastor at Daystar Christian Centre, our home church. With God’s blessings, we secured a mortgage for this lovely house, where we lived with our children. However, the inception of The Elevation Church brought about a drastic change in our financial circumstances. For several months, I found myself without a source of income, particularly six months after departing from Daystar, while still being obligated to meet our mortgage payments. The financial burden fell heavily on my wife, as the church was unable to provide any remuneration that could cover our living expenses. This house, which we cherished deeply, required immense faith and commitment to maintain.
On or around June 11th, I concluded my preaching duties at the initial location of The Elevation Church, situated at Magnolia Hall on Lagos Island. As I drove home across the Third Mainland Bridge, a familiar route for many, I noticed an unusual rise in the water level, which appeared brownish and alarming. After arriving home, I momentarily dismissed the concern, enjoying lunch and taking a nap, unaware that the rain, which had persisted throughout the day, was causing significant issues. Around 6 PM, I was awakened to the distressing news that our guest room on the ground floor was beginning to flood, with water seeping in from an unknown source. It became evident that our estate was experiencing severe flooding due to the relentless rain over several days, compounded by a malfunctioning drainage system. Before long, the water began to infiltrate our home, marking the beginning of a challenging ordeal.
Residents of Lagos, Nigeria, can relate to the distressing experience of severe flooding, particularly when it affects one’s home. In my case, the ground floor of my house was inundated almost to the lintel level, rendering it uninhabitable. At that time, I had recently embarked on a new journey by establishing The Elevation Church, driven by a sense of divine purpose. Faced with mounting bills and the weight of financial responsibilities, I found myself grappling with feelings of despair. I questioned whether these challenges were a test of my faith or a sign of impending ruin, especially as I had invested my life savings into this property.
