SHINE
I have chosen to title this message “Shine,” and I urge you to inform your neighbor that it is time to illuminate the world with your light. It is essential to convey the message that one should not remain passive; rather, it is imperative to shine brightly. Beyond the confines of the church, God desires for you to radiate your light, bringing glory to His name. Last Sunday, we highlighted the importance of engaging actively in our community, and I would like to express my gratitude to all those who participated in the ministry fair. We encouraged individuals to connect and serve alongside us, contributing to the vision of Elevation Church, which aims to foster greatness and disseminate the message of Christ globally. Our mission includes planting churches and nurturing families and faith communities that exemplify the transformative power of the vision bestowed upon us by God. As we celebrate each transformed life, marriage, and enterprise, we invite you to be more than a mere observer; we seek individuals whom God can depend on to serve Him and create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Furthermore, I want to inspire you to recognize that God also calls you to shine your light beyond the church walls, particularly in the marketplace and in every environment where you find yourself. In Matthew 20:3-7, as translated in the New King James Version, we see that God is perpetually engaged in the work of recruitment. Jesus illustrated this principle through a parable, stating that at the third hour, God noticed individuals idly standing in the marketplace. He invited them to join Him in the vineyard, promising fair compensation for their efforts. This narrative continues as He reaches out again at the sixth and ninth hours, emphasizing the ongoing opportunity for participation in His divine work. This serves as a reminder that God is always seeking willing hearts to join Him in His mission, encouraging us to step forward and shine our light wherever we are called.
A steward must conduct themselves with integrity and accountability, particularly when striving to fulfill the obligations of a covenant. To truly embrace the fullness of this covenant, one must take ownership of their actions and the skills they possess, ensuring that they are applied effectively in various situations. In Exodus chapter 31, we find a significant moment where Moses is entrusted with the monumental task of constructing a temple for God. In this context, God informs Moses that He has already prepared individuals with the necessary skills for this undertaking. Specifically, in verses 1 to 5, God identifies Bezalel, the son of Uri from the tribe of Judah, declaring that He has endowed him with the Spirit of God, granting him wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship essential for the project at hand.
Furthermore, in verse 6, God emphasizes that He has also appointed Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach from the tribe of Dan, alongside Bezalel, and has infused wisdom into the hearts of all skilled artisans involved. This divine selection underscores the importance of recognizing and utilizing the talents that individuals have cultivated over time. It is evident that these artisans were not merely waiting for an opportunity; rather, they had diligently honed their abilities, preparing themselves for the moment when their skills would be called upon. Thus, while the immediate task was the construction of the temple, the broader implication is that God had a vision that extended beyond this singular project, highlighting the significance of preparation and the responsible use of one’s gifts in fulfilling divine assignments.
Moses, I urge you to pursue these individuals, as they have evidently excelled in their endeavors within the marketplace. It is noteworthy that even Jesus, prior to commencing His ministry at the age of thirty, was engaged in carpentry. When people questioned His background, asking if He was not merely a carpenter and if His parents were not known to them, it is possible that some of those individuals were seated on furniture crafted by Him. In that era, reaching the age of thirty without having accomplished significant work was uncommon, as individuals typically began their trades early in life. No one accused Jesus of being a fraud or suggested that He turned to ministry out of failure in carpentry; rather, they acknowledged His craftsmanship. There is no record in the Gospels of anyone criticizing His work, despite their skepticism about His origins. The term “tekton,” which refers to a skilled craftsman, reflects the respect He garnered for His abilities, and this respect remained intact even as He transitioned into His divine mission.
I want to convey to you that God desires to utilize your talents both within the church and in the broader world. It is essential that you do not remain idle in the marketplace, as this is not aligned with God’s intentions for you. Your light should not be hidden; rather, it should shine brightly in the environments where you are placed, whether in your professional practice or workplace. Are you recognized as a bearer of God’s glory? Are you actively illuminating your surroundings with the light of God? It is crucial to reflect on these questions and ensure that your presence in the marketplace is a testament to your faith and purpose.
Kingdom service extends far beyond the confines of the church; it encompasses a broader mission that begins within our immediate surroundings. While it is true that charity starts at home, the divine intention is for our influence to resonate within the faith community where we are situated. However, this mission does not conclude there. Kingdom service involves addressing challenges and embodying God’s presence in every environment we inhabit. When I apply my God-given talents in the marketplace, the impact can be even more profound than within the church community. The essence of our work should not merely be about earning a paycheck; rather, it is about fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives and the various spheres He places us in.
Many individuals have unfortunately reduced their professional endeavors to mere survival, often referring to it as their “hustle.” This mindset can inadvertently diminish our divine calling and the significant influence we are meant to exert. It is essential to recognize that our presence in any city or community should not solely revolve around financial gain. Instead, we are called to illuminate our surroundings and represent God in the marketplace. As we navigate through different areas of influence, we must remember that our mission is to shine brightly and reflect God’s glory. In alignment with our guiding scripture from Isaiah 60:1, we are encouraged to “arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” This call to action reminds us that our purpose transcends mere existence; it is about making a meaningful impact in the world around us.
The verse states that the glory of the Lord has risen upon you, emphasizing that while darkness may cover the earth and deep shadows may envelop the people, the Lord will shine His light upon you, making His glory evident. This notion is particularly poignant when considering the presence of Christians in some of the most challenging and morally ambiguous sectors of society. It is essential to recognize that God does not dispatch angels to illuminate these dark corners of the world; rather, He calls upon individuals to be the bearers of His light. For instance, in the context of Nigerian politics, it is clear that divine intervention will not manifest through celestial beings but through the active participation of believers who are positioned to influence their environments.
In various spheres of influence, often referred to as the “mountains of influence,” it is incumbent upon Christians to occupy these spaces and shine their light. The current discourse surrounding the judiciary in Nigeria highlights the critical role that believers play in these institutions. Despite the pervasive darkness in certain areas, there are Christians who are tasked with the responsibility of being beacons of hope and righteousness. The transformation of our nation hinges on the willingness of believers to engage actively in these sectors. As I reflect on the scriptures, particularly the book of Jeremiah, I am reminded of the profound impact that God’s word can have on a nation. It is evident that throughout history, people have often pursued their own agendas while expecting divine intervention, a pattern that must change if we are to witness the results we desire for our country.
It is imperative that we do not allow our significant spheres of influence to be overshadowed by darkness.
Many individuals within the church profess their faith in Christ, and the Scriptures encourage us to rise, proclaiming that the light has come and the glory of God is upon us. However, when we enter various environments, it seems that we may inadvertently shield our light, perhaps using metaphorical umbrellas, preventing it from making a meaningful impact. In this congregation, we refuse to remain silent, as we firmly believe that the Church of Jesus Christ serves as the beacon of hope for the world. We are not merely the foundation and pillar of truth within the church walls; our mission extends into the marketplace and every sector of society.
In every arena, whether it be politics, economics, or corporate Nigeria, it is essential to acknowledge the troubling realities that exist. There are significant issues, including corruption, that have been perpetuated within corporate Nigeria, and it is crucial to confront these truths. The responsibility for corruption cannot solely rest on the shoulders of politicians; it is often facilitated by the banking system and civil servants who are not elected officials. These individuals, who may also attend our places of worship, play a role in enabling the very issues we lament. It is vital that we do not merely complain but instead choose to illuminate our surroundings with our light. If we collectively decide to shine brightly in our nation, we can dispel the darkness, and our prayers will be more readily answered. We cannot abdicate our responsibility for change to God while continuing to act irresponsibly; as children of God, we must engage actively in the transformation of our society.
It is essential to recognize that one cannot engage in education while delivering subpar performance. A notable mentor of mine, Bill Hybels, the founding pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, articulated a principle that resonates deeply with me: excellence honors God and inspires people. In my professional endeavors, I strive to exemplify this principle by not merely focusing on financial gain but by embodying the light of Christ through my actions. This commitment to excellence serves a dual purpose; it not only brings honor to God but also piques the curiosity of those around me, prompting them to seek the source of my inspiration. Without the need for overt preaching, my conduct becomes a testament to my faith, illuminating the path for others.
Furthermore, the impact of delivering my best extends beyond personal fulfillment; it creates a ripple effect that honors God, inspires those around me, and ignites the curiosity of non-believers. As articulated in Matthew 5:14, we are called to be the light of the world, akin to a city on a hill that cannot be concealed. Our good works should shine brightly, allowing others to witness them and, in turn, glorify our Father in heaven. This process not only reveals our source of strength but also encourages others to explore their own relationship with God, ultimately leading them to give glory back to Him. Thus, the pursuit of excellence in our respective callings is not merely a personal endeavor; it is a divine mandate that has the power to transform lives and draw others closer to the divine.
Praise be to Jesus, for it is through Him that we recognize the significance of our individual contributions and the platforms from which we serve. Your lampstand symbolizes the arena in which you create value and provide exceptional service. This lampstand represents your unique brilliance, whether it is found in educational institutions where you impart knowledge, in the marketplace where you operate your business, or in the digital realm where you showcase your programming talents and innovative products. For some, the lampstand may be situated in a hospital setting, where you dedicate yourself to healing, or in a courtroom, where you advocate for your clients. Each of these locations serves as a beacon, illuminating the path for others and allowing your light to shine forth in a world that is in need of guidance and inspiration.
In Romans chapter 12, verse 6, we are reminded that we each possess distinct gifts that are bestowed upon us according to divine grace, and it is our responsibility to utilize these gifts effectively. The scripture encourages us to engage in our respective callings, whether it be through prophecy, ministry, teaching, or acts of generosity and leadership. As a leader, for instance, it is imperative to lead with diligence, skill, and wisdom, ensuring that our actions reflect the light we are meant to share. Within our church community, we foster various interest-based small groups, inviting individuals to connect over shared passions such as food, entertainment, and fashion. This collaborative approach not only strengthens our bonds but also strategically enhances our collective ability to shine brightly within our community.
I hold in high regard and commend all individuals who are part of professional organizations, as these affiliations are essential for establishing the networks necessary to advance one’s career. However, within the faith community, it is equally important to foster connections with fellow professionals. Engaging with peers in the same field can be mutually beneficial; their approaches may serve as a source of inspiration, while your own methods may inspire them in return. This interaction also presents a valuable opportunity to mentor younger individuals entering the profession, guiding them not only towards professional excellence but also instilling in them the importance of navigating their careers with a sense of integrity and reverence for God. If we allow the current generation of bankers to be influenced solely by those who prioritize self-interest, we risk perpetuating a culture of corruption and moral decay. Conversely, by reaching out to the youth embarking on their professional journeys, we can encourage them to operate with a mindset that emphasizes their role as beacons of light, reflecting the values of Jesus Christ.
As I conclude this discussion, I would like to highlight three essential principles for excelling in your service. The first principle is to work for God. This concept emphasizes the understanding that God is the ultimate employer and source of reward. As stated in Colossians 3:23-24, whatever task you undertake, do it wholeheartedly as if you are serving the Lord. This perspective can be particularly empowering for individuals who may feel undervalued in their personal or professional lives. For those who experience feelings of neglect or lack of appreciation at home, adopting the mindset of serving God can provide solace and motivation. By recognizing that your efforts are not solely for the acknowledgment of others, but rather as a fulfillment of your responsibilities under divine guidance, you can navigate feelings of frustration and resentment with grace and purpose.
In the workplace, it is not uncommon for individuals to find themselves feeling discontented or unmotivated.
This dissatisfaction often stems from negative experiences related to treatment by colleagues or inadequate compensation. Such feelings can lead to a decline in work performance, which in turn hinders opportunities for advancement. It is essential to recognize that one cannot expect positive outcomes while cultivating a negative attitude. Regardless of the challenges presented by a toxic work environment, it is crucial to maintain the perspective that one’s efforts are ultimately for a higher purpose. The belief that one is working for God, rather than merely for human supervisors, can provide a sense of motivation and integrity.
The story of Joseph serves as a powerful reminder of how maintaining a strong work ethic, even in adverse circumstances, can lead to unexpected rewards. Despite facing significant hardships, including wrongful imprisonment, Joseph’s commitment to excellence in his work led to his eventual rise to prominence. This narrative illustrates that even in the most challenging situations, such as being labeled a slave in Potiphar’s house, a dedication to performing well can alter one’s fate. It is vital to avoid making excuses for subpar performance, especially when one has not faced the same level of adversity as others. Embracing the understanding that all work can be an act of worship can transform one’s approach to their job, reinforcing the idea that every individual, regardless of their role, is ultimately serving a divine purpose through their labor.
Work is often regarded as a form of worship, emphasizing the importance of engaging in meaningful and purposeful labor. It is essential to avoid work that lacks substance or significance, as such endeavors do not contribute to a fulfilling life. The concept of work as worship represents a balanced theological perspective, highlighting the intrinsic value of labor. A historical example of this principle can be found in the Quakers, a group that emerged in the 1700s during the Industrial Revolution in Europe. Known for their exceptional work ethic, the Quakers were devout Christians who believed in cultivating a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. This connection inspired them to perform their tasks with diligence, as they felt a divine presence observing their efforts. Consequently, they became highly sought after in the workforce, as their commitment to integrity and excellence set them apart from their contemporaries.
As the Quakers faced criticism for their faith, they took the initiative to establish their own businesses, demonstrating resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Their legacy is evident in the founding of several prominent companies, including Lloyds Bank, Barclays Bank, and Quaker Oats, among others. These enterprises were often initiated by individual families or groups within the Quaker community, driven by a strong ethical framework that guided their operations. The enduring success of these companies can be attributed to the values instilled by their founders, which continue to resonate in the business world today. For Christians, particularly Pentecostals in Nigeria, the example set by the Quakers serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for creating a lasting legacy through principled work. Emulating their commitment to excellence and integrity may pave the way for a more significant impact in society.
It is essential to acknowledge the divine presence in our endeavors, affirming that our ultimate allegiance lies with God, who serves as our supreme employer and source of reward. Regardless of the circumstances that may arise in our professional environment, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we embody the spirit of our excellent God, we are empowered to produce outstanding work and illuminate our surroundings with positivity. It is crucial to communicate this conviction to those around us, reinforcing the idea that our dedication to serving God transcends any challenges we may face in our workplaces.
Furthermore, it is imperative to embrace responsibility and actively seek opportunities for growth and improvement. To truly shine, one must adopt a solution-oriented mindset, focusing on finding answers rather than dwelling on problems. This proactive approach aligns with the wisdom imparted in Ephesians 5:15, which encourages us to navigate life with discernment and to seize every opportunity, especially in challenging times. In addition, relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit is vital as we strive to excel in our respective fields. The Holy Spirit equips us with the strength and insight needed to navigate the complexities of the marketplace, ensuring that we can respond effectively to adversity and maintain our integrity amidst negativity. By committing ourselves to this divine assistance, we can confidently face any challenges that arise, knowing that we are supported in our pursuit of excellence.
It is not feasible to rely solely on human emotions, as one cannot maintain a state of anger continuously while effectively seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is essential to intentionally depend on the assistance of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 10:38, the scripture illustrates that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, enabling Him to perform acts of goodness and to heal those who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. The multitude of good deeds that Jesus accomplished, particularly outside the temple, was a direct result of His reliance on the Holy Spirit, who empowered Him at all times. God desires to utilize you to enact goodness in the world, and the power of the Holy Spirit is readily available to assist you in shining brightly. Therefore, it is imperative to rise and embrace this divine empowerment.
