TAKE BACK YOUR JOY
As we prepare to embrace the year 2021, it is essential to reclaim the joy that may have been overshadowed by the challenges of 2020. The promise of a brighter future is a fundamental tenet of faith, as reflected in the biblical assertion that the path of a righteous individual shines ever more brightly until it reaches its zenith. This New Year presents an opportunity for personal responsibility in restoring joy to our lives, allowing the joy of the Lord to fill our hearts as we step into the future. It is crucial to recognize that joy is not merely a fleeting emotion but a source of strength that can invigorate our daily endeavors.
Reflecting on my childhood experiences, I have come to understand the profound impact of anticipation and excitement on my motivation and energy levels. Growing up in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, I vividly recall the thrill of being promised a visit to the amusement park or the zoological garden at the University of Ibadan. The mere thought of such outings filled me with joy and eagerness, making the wait feel almost unbearable. Each day leading up to the event was infused with hope, as I would often inquire about the timing of our adventure, longing for the day to arrive. This sense of anticipation is akin to the joy we can cultivate as we look forward to the New Year; by embracing this joy today, we can harness divine energy and invite the goodness of God to permeate our lives, transforming our present circumstances into a celebration of hope and fulfillment.
As you approach the New Year, it is essential to embrace the anticipation that your father is poised to bestow goodness upon you, and that divine intervention is on the horizon for both you and your family. As we transition into 2021, it is imperative to enter this new chapter fortified with joy. Joy serves as a formidable weapon in the spiritual realm; when one is filled with joy, the adversary finds it challenging to infiltrate one’s life. While the devil may have schemes for you in the coming year, it is crucial to counteract those plans with your own. This means that you should not approach the New Year in a careless manner; rather, you must be intentional about entering it with joy. This message marks the conclusion of our series on the attitude of gratitude, focusing specifically on reclaiming your joy as you step into 2021.
Despite the festive spirit that accompanies the Christmas season, many individuals find themselves grappling with a loss of joy, unable to regain it. You may have faced significant challenges recently, such as caring for a loved one in the hospital or dealing with your own health issues, which could have dampened your spirit. Questions may arise regarding your circumstances, leading to feelings of abandonment by God. Perhaps your marriage has become a source of distress, overshadowing the joy that others seem to experience during the holidays. In such moments of uncertainty, it is vital to remember that God remains sovereign over every situation. He desires for us to nurture His presence by actively reclaiming our joy and being deliberate in cultivating a joyful existence as we enter the New Year.
In the first chapter of Joel, verse 12, as rendered in the New Living Translation, we encounter a poignant depiction of desolation that resonates deeply with the challenges faced during agrarian times. The scripture states that the grapevines have dried up and the fig trees have withered, highlighting a dire situation for a society reliant on agriculture. This imagery extends beyond just the grapevines and fig trees; it encompasses the pomegranate, palm, and apple trees, all of which have succumbed to a similar fate. The text poignantly illustrates that the absence of these vital sources of nourishment and joy has led to a corresponding decline in the people’s happiness. The King James Version echoes this sentiment, asserting that joy has withered from the hearts of men, emphasizing the profound impact that external circumstances can have on internal states of being.
The implications of this scripture extend into a broader understanding of how our joy can be intricately linked to the conditions of our lives. It suggests that when certain elements that contribute to our happiness falter or diminish, our joy may also follow suit. This connection is particularly relevant in our contemporary lives, where various situations can lead to a decline in our emotional well-being. The metaphor of oil serves as a powerful illustration; just as oil can diminish over time, so too can our joy if not nurtured and replenished. The analogy of applying oil to the skin, only to find it has faded by midday, serves as a reminder of the need for continual care and attention to the sources of our joy. Thus, the scripture invites us to reflect on the fragility of joy and the importance of maintaining the elements that sustain it in our lives.
It is essential to recognize that joy, much like oil, can diminish over time, particularly after enduring a challenging period such as the year 2021. Many individuals, as I previously discussed in my sermon titled “The Class of 2020,” have faced significant trials across various aspects of life. This collective experience can lead to a depletion of joy, which often correlates with our circumstances and the flow of resources in our lives. The biblical reference in Joel 1:12 illustrates this point, indicating that the desiccation of the fields directly impacts the joy of the people. It is not uncommon for someone to feel a sense of loss in their heart, recognizing that joy has waned amidst adversity.
As we approach the conclusion of this year, particularly on this final Sunday of 2020, it is crucial to make a conscious decision to reclaim that joy. The challenges we face, such as financial difficulties or joblessness, should not dictate our emotional state. It is vital to understand that true joy is not contingent upon material wealth or favorable circumstances. While it may be easier to express joy during times of abundance—such as receiving gifts or bonuses—one must also cultivate joy in the face of hardship. Therefore, I encourage you to declare your intention to reclaim your joy, regardless of external conditions, and to share this commitment with others, reinforcing the notion that joy can be restored even in the most trying times.
The joy I experience within my heart is of a profound nature, one that transcends material possessions and favorable circumstances.
This joy is a divine gift, as articulated in Nehemiah 8:10, which emphasizes that the joy of the Lord serves as our strength. It is this spiritual joy that fortifies both you and me, providing resilience in the face of life’s challenges. The Prophet Habakkuk also alludes to this enduring joy in Habakkuk 3:17-19, where he expresses a steadfast spirit despite adverse conditions. The New King James Version of the Bible captures his sentiments, illustrating that even when the fig tree fails to blossom and the vines yield no fruit, true joy remains unshaken.
Habakkuk’s experience mirrors that of the Prophet Joel, who, in Joel 1:12, lamented the desolation that had caused joy to evaporate from the hearts of men. However, unlike Joel, Habakkuk’s response to similar trials is one of unwavering faith and joy. He acknowledges the bleakness of his circumstances—such as failed crops and the absence of livestock—yet he declares, “Yet I will rejoice.” This proclamation underscores that his joy is not contingent upon external events or material success, but rather stems from a deeper, spiritual source. Thus, Habakkuk exemplifies a profound understanding that true joy is resilient and independent of life’s fluctuations.
The essence of joy transcends mere favorable circumstances; it is a profound state of being that can be reclaimed even amidst adversity. The declaration of unwavering joy in the Lord emphasizes a deep-rooted faith that remains steadfast regardless of external situations. The speaker acknowledges that true strength is derived from God, who empowers individuals to rise above challenges. The imagery of deer’s feet symbolizes agility and resilience, suggesting that with divine strength, one can navigate life’s obstacles with grace and determination. The reference to being “unshakeable” and “immovable” illustrates a position of stability that comes from a strong spiritual foundation, allowing one to face trials with confidence.
The aspiration to ascend to “high hills” represents the pursuit of dreams and aspirations that may have seemed unattainable. Whether it involves academic achievements, entrepreneurial ventures, or personal milestones such as marriage, the promise of divine assistance in overcoming barriers is a source of encouragement. The concluding note about the composition being intended for the Chief Musician highlights the celebratory nature of this message, as it was meant to be expressed through song. This act of singing serves as a powerful affirmation of reclaiming joy, reinforcing the idea that true happiness is not contingent upon external factors but is a gift from God that sustains one through life’s trials. The joy that is rooted in faith is a profound and enduring source of strength, inviting all to embrace it wholeheartedly.
This season marks a significant turning point as you reclaim your joy while reflecting on the conclusion of this year. As you continue to celebrate, it is essential to embrace a profound sense of joy—one that is not derived from external sources and cannot be taken away by any adversary. It is crucial to recognize the distinction between joy and happiness; the latter is contingent upon external circumstances, while true joy emanates from a deeper spiritual connection. The prophet Habakkuk exemplifies this understanding by choosing to focus on the joy of the Lord rather than the transient events surrounding him. This serves as a poignant reminder of the teachings on the importance of maintaining a grateful attitude, which I previously discussed. Habakkuk’s message reiterates that one’s attitude holds greater significance than the mere facts of a situation.
Furthermore, it is vital to acknowledge that your attitude is not dictated by external influences or circumstances. You possess the power to choose your attitude regardless of the people or situations that may surround you. Many individuals mistakenly believe that a change in their environment or social circle will automatically enhance their outlook. However, true transformation comes from within, through a conscious decision to submit to the Holy Spirit and cultivate the joy that only God can provide. As we approach the new year, it is imperative to enter 2021 fortified by this divine joy, which serves as your strength. Embrace the understanding that your attitude is a personal choice, independent of external factors, and let this realization guide you into a more fulfilling and joyful future.
A sequence of favorable circumstances often leads individuals to adopt a more positive attitude; however, many tend to attribute their negative emotions and poor outlook on life to external factors. For instance, one might encounter a friend who expresses discontent, saying, “Oh, my husband is such a troublemaker.” This illustrates a common tendency to blame others for one’s emotional state. It is essential to recognize that regardless of the individuals we interact with or the challenges we face in our professional lives, we possess the power to choose our attitude. By consciously selecting a positive mindset, we invite transformative changes into our circumstances, allowing for divine intervention that can ultimately lead to favorable outcomes.
It is a misconception to believe that a shift in external circumstances will automatically result in a better attitude. In reality, it is the alteration of our internal perspective that can catalyze change in our surroundings. Many individuals wait for the perfect moment—such as entering a new relationship or achieving a particular milestone—before they allow themselves to embrace positivity. However, the call to action is to embody that positivity now, to be the person who radiates joy and kindness in the present moment. As articulated in the teachings of Habakkuk, it is not the external hardships that dictate our emotional state, but rather our internal disposition that influences our experiences. By shifting our mindset as we approach the new year, we can initiate a ripple effect of positive change, breaking free from the stagnation that often accompanies prolonged negativity.
The antithesis of joy can often be described as a sense of heaviness, a state that some individuals seem to romanticize, attributing it to their inherent temperament or personality traits. I can personally relate to this experience; there was a time when I was similarly inclined. I recall working in an environment where a colleague once confronted me about my habitual frowning upon arriving at the office. This moment of reflection prompted me to recognize that my demeanor was not a reflection of sadness but rather a manifestation of my overly serious approach to work. My mind was preoccupied with the day’s tasks, rendering me unresponsive to greetings and oblivious to the valuable relationships that surrounded me.
Upon this realization, I began to understand the importance of nurturing connections rather than merely completing tasks. Life transcends the mere execution of responsibilities; it is fundamentally about the relationships we cultivate. As we approach new beginnings, such as the year 2021, it is crucial to reshape our mindset. Tasks may not always unfold as planned, and time may be limited, yet it is essential to pause, appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us, and embrace the joy that God has provided. The Psalmist’s exhortation in Psalm 103 to bless the Lord and remember His benefits serves as a reminder that an excessive focus on deadlines and obligations can lead to a neglect of the joy and vitality that enrich our lives.
When one begins to experience struggles or moments of joy, it is not uncommon for negative influences to present themselves, tempting individuals to accept a spirit of heaviness as a normal part of life. This can lead to a dangerous mindset where one romanticizes feelings of mild depression, convincing oneself that it is acceptable to feel down occasionally. However, it is essential to recognize that the pursuit of joy is not only encouraged but is a fundamental aspect of spiritual well-being. The scriptures remind us to rejoice continually, as stated in Philippians, and to cultivate a heart filled with joy. Ephesians 5:18 further emphasizes the importance of being filled with the Spirit rather than succumbing to excesses that lead to despair. Engaging in uplifting practices such as singing psalms and hymns can foster a joyful spirit, aligning one’s heart with divine intentions.
To reclaim joy, one must adopt a proactive mindset, consciously deciding to reject the spirit of heaviness that seeks to infiltrate one’s life. It is crucial to view this heaviness as an adversary to the soul, as allowing it to take root can lead to emotional turmoil. The presence of joy and heaviness are mutually exclusive; thus, one must be intentional about which spirit is welcomed into their heart and environment. In times of loss or hardship, it is vital to guard against the emotional attacks that may arise when spiritual defenses are strong. The enemy often resorts to emotional manipulation when it cannot undermine one’s faith. Therefore, vigilance is necessary to ensure that the spirit of heaviness does not gain a foothold, allowing the joy of the Lord to prevail in every circumstance.
Doubts regarding the existence and power of God can gradually lead to a sense of heaviness that weighs down the spirit. It is crucial to maintain a firm stance against this spirit of heaviness, especially as one approaches the New Year. The imagery that the Holy Spirit often evokes in relation to heaviness is akin to the act of submerging an individual in water with a heavy object, such as a metal weight, attached to them. This weight causes the person to sink, ultimately leading to drowning. Similarly, the adversary employs the spirit of heaviness to drag individuals down, preventing them from experiencing victory and fulfillment. It is imperative to reject this spirit of heaviness, as it can severely impact one’s emotional state and overall well-being.
In this season, it is essential to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, which serves as a powerful antidote to negativity and despair. Some individuals seem to actively seek out reasons to feel anxious or unhappy, often projecting their worries onto the lives of others. For instance, one might express discontent over a friend’s troubled relationship, allowing that external situation to overshadow their own joy. However, true support for others can only be offered when one is grounded in their own happiness. The Scriptures remind us that in the presence of God, there is an abundance of joy, and entering that presence requires a heart filled with praise and thanksgiving. Therefore, it is vital to focus on personal joy and gratitude, as this not only uplifts oneself but also enables one to genuinely assist others in need.
It is essential to seek assistance in liberating oneself from the oppressive influence of negative emotions that can weigh heavily on the spirit.
This season, it is imperative to break free from the grip of such emotions, as they can lead to a pervasive sense of heaviness that hinders personal growth and joy. Emotions such as fear, worry, anxiety, bitterness, regret, anger, and shame can create an environment that fosters this heaviness, making it crucial to confront and manage these feelings as one transitions into a new year. By intentionally addressing these mood-diminishing factors, individuals can reclaim their joy and embrace a more fulfilling existence.
Moreover, the consequences of allowing negative emotions to dominate one’s life can be severe, potentially leading to experiences such as panic attacks, clinical depression, and even psychosomatic illnesses—conditions that manifest without any identifiable medical cause. Often, individuals find themselves in medical settings only to be told that their ailments stem from stress or emotional turmoil rather than physical illness. To combat this, it is advisable to adopt a mindset that prioritizes well-being and enjoyment, akin to the philosophy embraced by those who refer to themselves as the “I cannot come and kill myself” group. By choosing to focus on joy and lightness, one can effectively diminish the impact of psychosomatic issues and fully enjoy the blessings of health, peace, wealth, love, and safety that life has to offer, even amidst the uncertainties of the world.
It is essential to release any emotional burdens and negative influences that may seek to infiltrate your heart during this season. Traveling light allows you to fully embrace the advantages of the covenant. When faced with adverse circumstances that threaten to dampen your spirit, it is crucial to consciously engage with joy. There have been moments in my life where I had to intentionally choose joy, setting a specific playlist for the following day to uplift my mood. By selecting songs that resonate with positivity and playing them on repeat, I created an environment that continually fostered joy, enabling me to navigate through challenging times.
In times of distress, such as when financial difficulties arise, personal relationships falter, or employment situations become uncertain, it is vital to maintain a joyful disposition. I speak with conviction that for every setback, there is a promise of restoration; for every moment of shame, God will provide double blessings. Even when faced with rejection or the closing of doors, it is important to remember that new opportunities will emerge, often greater than those lost. Elevating your mood through praise can be a powerful tool in this process. Engaging with uplifting music and focusing on gratitude can transform your emotional state, allowing you to rise above negativity and embrace the joy that is rightfully yours.
Music plays a significant role in shaping our emotional landscape, often referred to as mood music. This type of music has the power to alleviate burdens and transform our experiences. A notable example from the Old Testament illustrates this concept: the prophet Elisha requested a minstrel to create an atmosphere conducive to receiving divine inspiration. As the music filled the air, Elisha was able to connect with a higher realm of creativity and insight, which is a gift that transcends material wealth. The right music can profoundly influence our state of mind, either uplifting or diminishing our spirits. Therefore, it is essential to curate our musical environment with uplifting genres such as Kingdom music, praise, and worship, which celebrate the unwavering faithfulness of God. Songs like “Goodness of God” by Bethel Worship serve as reminders of divine blessings, instilling hope and joy as we navigate through life’s challenges.
In addition to the uplifting power of music, laughter is another vital component for maintaining emotional well-being. Proverbs 17:22 emphasizes that a cheerful heart is akin to medicine, while a broken spirit can lead to despair. Engaging in humor and surrounding oneself with spiritually and emotionally vibrant individuals can foster a joyful atmosphere. Laughter acts as a circuit breaker, interrupting the flow of negativity and depression, much like an electrical circuit breaker protects against overloads. When faced with overwhelming emotions, the presence of laughter can disrupt the cycle of despair, allowing for a renewed sense of hope and vitality. Embracing humor and joy during difficult times is essential for cultivating resilience and maintaining a positive outlook on life.
The cycle of depression can be dismantled, and I pray that it is shattered in your life through the power of Jesus. This season is meant for you to experience a joyful heart, as such joy is known to bring healing, as affirmed by scripture. Engaging deeply with the Word of God is essential, especially during challenging times. In Jeremiah 15:16, the prophet expresses a profound connection with God’s words, stating, “Oh Lord, your words were found, and I consumed them.” This act of consuming divine wisdom brings joy and rejoicing to the heart, reinforcing the notion that revelation knowledge possesses the power to liberate. Therefore, immerse yourself in the scriptures during this season, trust in the promises of the Lord, and fortify your faith through positive affirmations.
Furthermore, the spirit of faith, as articulated in 2 Corinthians 4:13, emphasizes the importance of speaking forth what we believe. The verse reminds us that since we share the same spirit of faith, we must vocalize our beliefs. Thus, consider the words you are declaring in this season; if you seek to break free from despair and embrace joy, it is imperative to consistently speak the Word of God into your life. Additionally, connect with the joy that is set before you through hope, as highlighted in Zechariah 9:12, which encourages the “prisoners of hope” to return to their stronghold. This hope is not feeble; rather, it is a source of strength that does not disappoint, as Romans 5:5 assures us that the love of God is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Embracing joy will anchor you in hope, empowering you to navigate life’s challenges with resilience.
Embrace the concept of becoming a “prisoner of hope,” as articulated in Zechariah 9:12. This notion encourages individuals to immerse themselves in the joy that lies ahead, allowing it to shape their present circumstances. By focusing on the hope of the future, one can draw strength and joy from that vision, much like the way Christ endured the cross. He did so by recognizing the joy set before Him, which enabled Him to overlook the shame and suffering, knowing that His ultimate destination was to sit at the right hand of God in heaven. As we reflect on our own lives in 2021, it is essential to consider what we envision for our future and whether we will permit that vision to fill our hearts with joy during this season, thus facilitating a genuine new beginning in the name of Jesus.
In this journey, it is crucial to seek the Holy Spirit for the “oil of joy,” as true joy cannot be manufactured by human effort; its origin lies solely in the Holy Spirit. If joy is derived from the Holy Spirit, it remains untouchable by the adversary. Conversely, if one allows the devil to be the source of their joy—through material possessions or fleeting circumstances—then that joy becomes vulnerable and dependent on external factors. However, when the Holy Spirit is the foundation of one’s joy, it flows continuously, provided there is an ongoing fellowship with Him. This understanding emphasizes the importance of nurturing a relationship with the Holy Spirit to experience a lasting and profound joy that transcends worldly influences.
