THE ANOINTING UPON
God desires to bestow His power upon you and to manifest Himself through your being. This divine intention is rooted in the dual nature of Christ Jesus, as articulated in 1 Corinthians chapter 1. In verses 22 and onward, it is noted that while the Greeks pursue wisdom, the message we proclaim is that of Christ crucified, which serves as a stumbling block to the Jews and appears as foolishness to the Greeks. However, for those who are called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, Christ embodies both the power of God and the wisdom of God. This duality is essential for a holistic understanding of Christ’s role in our lives.
A notable concern within Pentecostal Christianity, particularly as it has been practiced in various regions of Africa and beyond, is the disproportionate emphasis placed on the power of God, often overshadowing His wisdom. The Scriptures affirm that Christ is both the power and the wisdom of God, suggesting that one can appreciate the wisdom of Christ without fully embracing His power. Individuals who prioritize intellectual understanding may find themselves struggling with the concept of divine power, as it often defies logical reasoning. This tension is reflected in the biblical narrative, where the Jews sought signs and the Greeks sought rational explanations, leading to the perception of Christ as a stumbling block or foolishness. Historically, the prophets addressed the Jewish people, who were in search of signs to validate the fulfillment of prophecies, highlighting the ongoing quest for understanding and evidence in the spiritual journey.
Throughout history, prophets have delivered messages to the Jewish people, who have consistently sought the fulfillment of these prophecies. This pursuit has fostered a deep understanding of God’s power among them, as their ancestral narratives often emphasize miraculous events such as the parting of the Red Sea and the plagues in Egypt. Consequently, the Jewish tradition has cultivated a perception of Jehovah as a deity of immense power, leading them to remain vigilant for signs of divine intervention. In contrast, the ancient Greeks, recognized as the epicenter of knowledge and civilization, laid the groundwork for various fields, including mathematics and physics, with figures like Pythagoras exemplifying their intellectual prowess. Their quest for understanding has created a dichotomy between those who seek empirical evidence and those who embrace faith in the supernatural.
The biblical text in 1 Corinthians 1:24 suggests that Christ aims to bridge the gap between these two perspectives, allowing for a harmonious engagement with divine wisdom and human intellect. This integration enables individuals to navigate complex issues through the guidance of the Holy Spirit while simultaneously witnessing the manifestation of God’s power. Contrary to the notion that faith requires the suspension of reason, it is essential to recognize that God desires to utilize our intellect without allowing it to obstruct our connection to His power. An illustrative example can be found in the account of a man healed by Jesus, who, despite the unconventional method of applying mud to his eyes, obediently followed the instruction to wash in the pool. This narrative underscores the importance of faith and obedience, even when the path to healing may seem illogical to the human mind.
In the context of engaging with divine wisdom, it is essential to shift one’s focus from superficial actions to a deeper understanding of the message being conveyed. The narrative illustrates that merely performing rituals or adhering to societal expectations, such as washing oneself after being in mud, does not equate to a genuine connection with God’s power. Instead, one must concentrate on the essence of the teachings and the speaker’s intent. This principle is exemplified in the interactions of Jesus, who demonstrated profound wisdom that captivated those around him. For instance, when confronted with the question of whether to pay taxes to Caesar, Jesus skillfully navigated the dilemma by asking for a coin and inquiring about its inscription. His response, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s,” not only deflected the trap set for him but also revealed a deeper understanding of the relationship between earthly authority and divine obligation.
Furthermore, the account of the woman caught in adultery highlights the complexities of human judgment and the often unjust treatment of women. The accusers, having only brought forth the woman while allowing the man to escape, exemplified a longstanding societal tendency to place blame disproportionately on women. In this precarious situation, Jesus employed divine wisdom by challenging those present to reflect on their own sins before casting judgment. His statement that only those without sin should cast the first stone resonated deeply, prompting the accusers to reconsider their actions. As a result, one by one, they dropped their stones, illustrating the transformative power of self-reflection and the importance of mercy over condemnation. This narrative serves as a reminder of the necessity to engage one’s mind fully in understanding the complexities of moral and ethical dilemmas, rather than succumbing to the pressures of societal norms.
Wisdom is a profound gift that does not require debate or extensive discussion; it simply exists as a guiding force. As we transition into 2018, one can anticipate the enjoyment of wisdom that will aid in navigating intricate issues across various domains, including government, corporate environments, and familial relationships, all in the name of the Lord Jesus. It is essential to recognize that God desires to empower us significantly, a transformation that occurs when one is filled with the Holy Spirit. Last week, we explored the concept of the anointing within, drawing upon the prophetic insights found in Isaiah chapter 11, which characterizes the Holy Spirit as embodying wisdom, knowledge, might, counsel, and reverence for the Lord.
Isaiah 11:2 articulates that the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him, encompassing wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. It is crucial to understand that the fear of God mentioned in the Scriptures does not imply a sense of terror akin to fearing a criminal. Instead, it reflects a deep respect and honor for God, akin to the reverence one feels towards a parent who has made significant sacrifices, such as paying for education. This honor is not born out of dread but from a place of love and gratitude for all that God has done and continues to do. In essence, the fear of God is about recognizing His greatness and responding with reverence, rather than living in a state of anxiety or terror.
He consistently meets our expectations, and we give glory to Jesus for this unwavering faithfulness.
This reverence is what God desires from us, and it is facilitated through the Holy Spirit. It is essential to comprehend that the workings of the anointing within us are significant, but today, I wish to focus on the anointing that rests upon us. Our discussion began last week with Acts chapter 2, verse 1, which states that on the day of Pentecost, the believers were gathered together in unity. Verse 2 describes a sudden sound from heaven, akin to a powerful rushing wind, which filled the entire house where they were assembled. This phenomenon illustrates the concept of corporate anointing, a topic I previously addressed and wish to reiterate, as it is crucial for understanding the importance of gathering with fellow believers.
Many individuals fail to appreciate the significance of corporate anointing, which can hinder their participation in communal worship. It is vital to resist any distractions that may prevent you from joining the fellowship of believers, as this gathering is not merely a social event but an opportunity to experience a divine presence that cannot be replicated in isolation. The scripture indicates that this corporate anointing enveloped the assembly, and in verse 3, it describes how cloven tongues, resembling fire, appeared and rested upon each individual. Subsequently, verse 4 reveals that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in various tongues as the Spirit enabled them. This passage highlights three distinct manifestations of the Holy Spirit: the collective presence of God among the believers, the anointing that rested upon each person, and the individual filling of the Holy Spirit, empowering them to speak in tongues as directed by the Spirit.
It is essential to recognize that God’s intention is to empower His people not for mere display, but for the advancement of His kingdom. The essence of the Kingdom of God transcends mere words, as articulated in verse 20, emphasizing that it is fundamentally rooted in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul consistently sought to convey through his epistles that believers should earnestly desire this divine power. In 1 Corinthians 2:3-5, he reflects on his own experience, stating that he approached the Corinthians in a state of weakness and trepidation, and that his preaching was not characterized by eloquent human wisdom but rather by a demonstration of the Spirit’s power. This approach was intentional, as Paul aimed for their faith to be anchored not in human intellect but in the profound power of God.
As believers, it is crucial to understand the distinction between relying on human wisdom and tapping into the divine power that God offers. While there is merit in the insights provided by motivational literature, such wisdom is limited and cannot compare to the transformative power that comes from God. Paul, acknowledging his own writing abilities, cautioned against placing faith solely in eloquence or persuasive speech; instead, he urged believers to seek the tangible manifestations of God’s power in their lives. Each believer is called to have a personal testimony that reflects an encounter with this divine power, reinforcing the notion that the Kingdom of God is fundamentally about power rather than mere words. As we approach the new year, it is vital to embrace the understanding that God desires to empower us, urging us to enter 2018 not in an ordinary state, but equipped and anointed for His purpose.
The narrative centers around a young man named Saul, who was employed in his father’s business during a pivotal time in Israel’s history. His father, Kish, was the first king of Israel, and the nation was in a state of unrest, yearning for a monarch to lead them. Amidst this backdrop, Saul was likely engaged in pastoral duties, tending to livestock. One day, a crisis arose when some of their donkeys went missing, prompting Saul to feel a sense of urgency. Accompanied by his father’s servants, he embarked on a quest to locate the lost animals, traversing various regions, including Shaalim and Shalisha, as detailed in the biblical account found in 1 Samuel chapter 9. This journey can be likened to navigating familiar areas in Lagos, such as moving from Oshodi to Egbeda and then towards Berger, illustrating the aimless wandering in search of something vital.
As Saul and his companions continued their search, a moment of clarity struck him. He inquired of his father’s servant whether there was a prophet in the city who could provide divine guidance, thus preventing them from aimlessly wandering without purpose. The servant informed him of a seer, a man of God, who resided nearby and often ascended the mountain to commune with the Lord. This revelation marked a turning point in their journey, as they set out to find Samuel, the prophet, who held the key to divine insight and direction. This encounter not only highlights Saul’s growing awareness of the spiritual realm but also foreshadows his significant role in the unfolding narrative of Israel’s monarchy. As one reflects on this story, it serves as a reminder that in times of uncertainty, seeking divine guidance can lead to clarity and purpose.
Samuel, the son of Hannah, is a significant biblical figure known for his unwavering faith in God, particularly after enduring years of infertility. Hannah’s heartfelt prayer for a child was met with divine favor, leading her to promise that if granted a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord’s service. True to her word, she brought Samuel to the temple, where he grew into a devoted prophet, deeply committed to following God’s will. His prophetic insight was remarkable, as evidenced by his recognition of Saul, the man God had chosen to be the future king of Israel. This pivotal moment in Samuel’s life illustrates his profound connection with the divine and his role as a spiritual leader during a transformative period in Israel’s history.
In a significant event recorded in the scriptures, Samuel anointed Saul, marking the beginning of Saul’s divine empowerment for leadership. The act of anointing, performed with a flask of oil, symbolized God’s selection and blessing upon Saul as he was appointed commander over God’s people. Samuel’s prophetic words to Saul were not only a declaration of his new role but also a foretelling of events that would soon unfold, including the reassurance regarding Saul’s father’s concerns for him. This anointing was not merely a ceremonial act; it represented the Holy Spirit’s influence, which not only brings peace and restoration to the individual but also addresses the external challenges and anxieties they face. As Samuel instructed Saul to continue on his journey, he emphasized the transformative power of divine anointing, which equips individuals to confront and resolve the issues that cause distress in their lives.
Three individuals will ascend to God at Bethel, and you will encounter them along your journey. One will be carrying three young goats, another will have three loaves of bread, and the third will be transporting a skin of wine. According to verse 4, they will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you are to accept from their hands. As you enter the year 2018, anticipate receiving divine empowerment that will provide you with everything necessary for the fulfillment of your destiny. Individuals will cross your path, bringing with them their skills, knowledge, and resources to assist you in reaching your goals. This is the essence of divine empowerment; when the anointing is upon you, all that you require for your destiny will find you, regardless of where it may be located in the world.
Furthermore, verse 5 indicates that you will arrive at the hill of God, where the Philistine garrison is situated. Upon reaching the city, you will encounter a group of prophets descending from a high place, accompanied by musical instruments such as a string instrument, tambourine, flute, and harp. They will be prophesying, and when the Spirit of the Lord descends upon you, you will join them in prophecy and be transformed into a new person. The anointing brings about divine empowerment, awakening latent capacities within you that have remained dormant. It ignites potential that you may not have previously recognized, leading to the emergence of new passions, insights, and a strong desire to pursue endeavors that were once unexplored. This transformative experience is a testament to the power of divine anointing in your life.
The experience of engaging in something entirely new is a significant aspect of the transformative influence of the Holy Spirit, as highlighted in verse seven. This transformation is not merely a personal journey but a collective recognition of divine presence. In 2018, individuals will find themselves responding to circumstances in ways that reflect this divine guidance, and it will be evident to those around them that God is actively involved in their lives. The assurance of God’s companionship will manifest in various situations, leading to a profound awareness of His influence in their actions and decisions.
The narrative from 1 Samuel illustrates the profound impact of anointing on one’s identity. When Saul began to prophesy, a new facet of his character emerged, prompting others to question his transformation, asking if he was indeed among the prophets. As we approach the New Year, it is my prayer that the Holy Spirit will unveil new dimensions of your identity, prompting others to recognize your growth and transformation. They may wonder if you have become a skilled professional or a dedicated public servant, or even question your spiritual rebirth. This change is akin to a friend who, after experiencing a spiritual awakening, began to share his revelations, ultimately leading to his own conversion and active participation in the community of faith. Such transformations serve as powerful testimonies of the work of God in our lives.
He dedicated his life to Christ, and shortly thereafter, his friend suggested that he meet his pastor. Following a service, his friend introduced him to me, marking the beginning of our friendship, which has endured since that initial encounter. This transformation is often noticeable to others, as the influence of the Holy Spirit brings about a distinct change in one’s life. However, a significant issue we face today is the lack of desire for the presence and infilling of the Holy Spirit. In a recent service, I emphasized that it is impossible to be under two influences simultaneously. If one finds solace in substances like alcohol or drugs, a choice must be made between allowing the Holy Spirit to empower and inspire them or continuing down a path of dependency on these substances.
The truth is straightforward; it is a decision that each individual must confront, whether to embrace the Holy Spirit or cling to their vices.
The Bible, specifically in Ephesians 5:18, advises against drunkenness, urging believers to be filled with the Holy Spirit instead. God understands that life can be frustrating, and many seek to alleviate their struggles through intoxicating means. Yet, the Holy Spirit offers a form of intoxication that can help one navigate through life’s challenges while remaining steadfast. I challenge anyone to contest my experience; I can assure you that my high is unparalleled. After a gathering, while others may leave, I can remain elevated in spirit for hours. The reality is that true fulfillment cannot be found in drunkenness, as it leaves one ill-equipped to face life’s demands, such as seeking financial assistance when needed.
In these challenging times, it is imperative to exercise caution, as we may encounter numerous frustrations that could tempt us to revert to our previous lifestyles. It is during such moments that reliance on the Holy Spirit becomes essential. Many believers often overlook their initial fervor for the Holy Spirit, which was so palpable when they first encountered Jesus. This neglect can lead to a week passing without any contemplation of the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives, which ultimately hinders their spiritual empowerment. Without this connection, one cannot experience the transformative power that the Holy Spirit offers, akin to a vehicle lacking the necessary fuel to operate effectively.
The anointing of the Holy Spirit is crucial for asserting one’s spiritual authority and gaining the boldness required to confront challenges, including rebuking the adversary. When one is under the anointing, decisions that should be rejected are dismissed, allowing for the manifestation of one’s inheritance in Christ. The anointing equips individuals to fulfill their divine purpose, and it is vital to understand the different dimensions of this anointing. The anointing within cultivates personal transformation, while the anointing upon empowers one to assist others. As we explore the distinctions between the gifts and fruits of the Spirit, it becomes clear that the anointing from the Holy One imparts wisdom and enables us to navigate the complexities of life, as articulated in the scripture that highlights the diversity of gifts and ministries, all stemming from the same divine source.
The manifestation of the Spirit is bestowed upon each individual for the collective benefit of all. This anointing, which is conferred upon you, serves the purpose of enriching the community, while the anointing that resides within you is essential for living a fulfilling Christian life. It is crucial to recognize that the responsibility of nurturing this inner anointing lies with you, as it is instrumental in enhancing your spiritual journey. The anointing upon you is a gracious gift from God, which may not always require your active participation; for instance, in biblical accounts, even a donkey was able to prophesy to Balaam, illustrating that the anointing can manifest in unexpected ways. To receive this anointing, one must remain in a position where God can utilize them, ensuring that they are receptive to His divine purpose.
In the Gospel of Luke, it is emphasized that the gifts of the Spirit are intended for the benefit of all. Various manifestations, such as the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, diverse tongues, and their interpretation, are all distributed by the same Holy Spirit. This Spirit operates with a sovereign will, granting these gifts to individuals as He sees fit. It is important to understand that these gifts are not merely for personal gain but are meant to empower you to be a blessing to others. As you move forward, particularly into the new year, it is vital to embrace the responsibility of utilizing the anointing upon you to seek opportunities to bless those around you, as God desires to work through you for the greater good.
The empowerment of the Holy Spirit is essential for undertaking righteous and challenging endeavors. In the year 2018, there are individuals who will experience the profound ability to lay hands on the sick, resulting in their healing. This miraculous recovery will occur not through personal effort but through the divine influence of the Holy Spirit working through them. Furthermore, one may find themselves in a business environment where they are presented with a problem, and without the need for reference materials, they will provide an effective solution. This ability to resolve issues for others is a manifestation of the spiritual gifts that one should earnestly seek, as indicated in the Scriptures, which encourage believers to desire the greater gifts and to ask for them in faith, as outlined in James 1:6.
To effectively release the anointing that blesses others, it is crucial to cultivate an emotional connection with those around you. Engaging with individuals who may be in distress is not merely a matter of passing by; rather, it involves asking questions and showing genuine concern. This approach is exemplified in Matthew 14:14, where Jesus, moved by compassion, healed all who were sick. Similarly, when Joseph encountered the butler and baker in prison, his inquiry into their sadness led to the activation of his gift of dream interpretation. Had he chosen to ignore their plight, that gift would have remained dormant. Therefore, it is imperative to walk in love and maintain emotional ties with others, as well as to dedicate time to worship, which serves to provoke the movement of the Spirit in our lives.
In Acts 13, beginning around verse 1, it is noted that certain prophets in Antioch came together for the purpose of ministering to the Lord while engaging in fasting. During this time of worship, the Holy Spirit communicated a significant message, indicating that through their devotion, they would witness the activation and manifestation of spiritual gifts. This highlights the importance of dedicating time to worship, as it serves as a catalyst for the outpouring of the Spirit’s gifts. Furthermore, it is essential to recognize that grace and spiritual gifts can be influenced by those who already possess them. This concept is supported by Paul’s letter to Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6, where he urges Timothy to rekindle the gift of God that was imparted to him through the laying on of hands. This act of laying hands is a means of transferring grace and blessings from one individual to another, emphasizing the communal aspect of spiritual empowerment.
Moreover, it is imperative for individuals to actively cultivate and enhance the grace bestowed upon them. The call to “fan it to flame” signifies the necessity of igniting the gifts of God within oneself. In verse 10, it is stated that each person has received a gift and is encouraged to minister it to others, acting as good stewards of God’s diverse grace. The scripture further instructs that if anyone speaks, they should do so as if they are delivering the very words of God, and if anyone serves, they should do so with the strength that God provides. This ensures that in all actions, God is glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom eternal glory and dominion belong. Therefore, it is crucial to utilize one’s gifts actively and purposefully, contributing to the collective growth and edification of the community.
