The Assurance Of God’s Presence

THE ASSURANCE OF GOD’S PRESENCE

The Assurance of His Presence marks the conclusion of our teaching series titled “Anchored.” I encourage you to engage with your neighbor and inquire whether they possess a firm assurance of His presence. Praise God! This assurance is vital for maintaining our anchor in faith. To remain steadfast, it is essential for me to have a deep-seated confidence in His divine presence. I seek the certainty that God is perpetually by my side. There are moments in life when one may experience doubt regarding His proximity, leading to a crisis of faith. It is not uncommon to encounter circumstances that challenge our belief in His constant companionship, and many of us may currently be navigating such trials.

In fact, there are specific life situations that can evoke feelings of abandonment, making it seem as though God has distanced Himself from us. During these times, it is easy to question whether our struggles matter to Him or if He truly cares for our well-being. Such doubts can be particularly disheartening, especially when we feel overwhelmed by our challenges. It is crucial to remember that even in our darkest moments, the assurance of His presence can provide the strength and comfort needed to persevere. By fostering this assurance, we can remain anchored in our faith, trusting that God is always with us, regardless of the circumstances we face.

As I reflect on my upbringing, I find myself contemplating the complexities of familial relationships, particularly in the context of growing up in a polygamous household. The presence of multiple maternal figures inevitably led to comparisons, a phenomenon familiar to those who have shared similar experiences. My mother, a strict disciplinarian, embodied the archetype of a “tiger mom,” imposing high standards and unwavering expectations. Living under her roof often felt akin to residing in a strict boarding school, where leniency was a rare commodity. I vividly recall instances from my primary school days when my mother would allocate a mere few extra minutes for my return from school, which was only a short distance away. If I arrived home even slightly later than the designated time, I faced the consequences of her discipline, which could include corporal punishment. The pressure to account for my whereabouts and activities was relentless, and failure to comply often resulted in hours of punishment.

In the midst of this strict upbringing, my siblings and I occasionally found ourselves engaging in discussions about the possibility of “swapping” mothers, a whimsical notion that arose from our shared experiences. With three other maternal figures in the household, the dynamics were complex, and the allure of a more lenient environment was tempting. While my siblings might have enjoyed carefree moments playing games outside, the thought of indulging in such leisure was foreign to me, as my mother’s expectations left little room for play. Despite the challenges and frustrations of my childhood, I now recognize that those formative experiences shaped who we have become. The hardships we endured, while painful at the time, ultimately contributed to our resilience and character, allowing us to appreciate the lessons learned from our upbringing.

Praise be to Jesus, and in a similar context, the Bible articulates in the book of James, specifically in Chapter 1, that we should “count it all joy when we encounter various trials.” This passage emphasizes that the testing of our faith yields patience, and we are encouraged to allow patience to fulfill its purpose, leading us to a state of perfection and completeness, lacking in nothing. It is essential to recognize that throughout our lives, we will face a multitude of challenges. During these times, it may feel as though we are isolated, as if God has abandoned us, which can lead to a disconnection from the belief that His presence is with us. This sentiment mirrors the experience of Christ’s disciples when they found themselves in a perilous situation on a boat, struggling against the waves while Jesus rested peacefully in the stern. His tranquility was rooted in a profound understanding and trust in God, demonstrating that even amidst turmoil, one can find peace through faith.

The essence of this narrative is that, in moments of distress, it is crucial to anchor ourselves in revelation knowledge—an understanding that transcends the visible circumstances surrounding us.

This knowledge provides a steadfast foundation, allowing us to remain resolute even when external factors suggest otherwise. When faced with adversity, it is common to feel as though we are adrift, questioning the presence of God and contemplating alternative solutions or supports. However, it is vital to remember that true strength and stability come from a deep-seated faith and the assurance that God is always with us, even when we cannot perceive His presence. Embracing this revelation can transform our perspective, enabling us to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and grace, rather than succumbing to despair or seeking other sources of support.

Many Christians often seek alternative sources of support for their faith, particularly during times when it may seem as though God is distant or inactive. This tendency to rely on external affirmations can lead to a wavering commitment to spiritual practices, such as attending church. It is crucial to recognize that maintaining a steadfast faith requires a firm anchoring in the belief of God’s constant presence. The challenge arises when individuals look for validation of their faith based on their experiences rather than the unwavering truth of God’s promises. It is essential to understand that one’s personal experiences should not dictate the belief in God’s presence; rather, if God declares His presence, it is a reality that transcends individual interpretation.

Reflecting on my upbringing, I recall that my father, a businessman and politician, was often absent from home due to his commitments, whether it was executing contracts or campaigning during political seasons. His involvement in the now-defunct NPN meant that he was frequently away, leaving my mother to manage the household. This environment, filled with the complexities of political life and the presence of bodyguards, shaped my understanding of authority and responsibility. Despite the challenges and the sense of trouble that often surrounded us, it is vital to remember that the presence of difficulties does not negate God’s sovereignty. Just as my mother took charge in my father’s absence, we must recognize that God’s authority remains intact, regardless of our circumstances.

It is essential to understand that one cannot rely solely on personal experiences to validate the presence of God. For instance, during a moment of crisis when Christ was asleep in the boat, the disciples faced a dire situation as the vessel was on the verge of sinking. Despite the chaos surrounding them, God was present, yet the disciples sought a tangible experience to affirm His presence. When Jesus awakened, He addressed their lack of faith, reminding them that their fears were unfounded. His ability to calm the storm was a testament to His omnipresence, emphasizing that God is always with us, regardless of our circumstances. It is crucial to recognize that sometimes, all that is required of us is to speak a word of authority over our challenges, remaining steadfast in our faith.

Moreover, trials and tribulations serve a purpose in our spiritual journey, as articulated in the book of James. The scripture encourages believers to embrace these challenges with joy, understanding that the testing of faith cultivates patience. This process is vital for spiritual maturity, leading to a state of completeness and lack of deficiency. The assurance of God’s unwavering presence is reinforced in Hebrews, where it is stated that He will never abandon us. This promise allows us to confidently declare that the Lord is our helper, instilling a sense of courage that transcends fear of human adversities. It is imperative to remind ourselves and others that God is indeed with us, providing comfort and strength in every situation we encounter.

Praise be to Jesus, for He assures us with the promise that He is perpetually by our side, declaring, “I am always with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” This assurance was particularly significant for Joshua as he assumed leadership from Moses, a pivotal moment detailed in Joshua chapter 1. Many individuals may find themselves in similar circumstances today, having recently transitioned into new roles or positions amidst the shifting landscape of our economy. In this season of recession, numerous people are navigating changes, whether it be moving from one industry to another or adapting to new responsibilities. God has promised to guide us into uncharted territories, often referred to as “blue oceans,” and as we embark on these new journeys, it is essential to ground ourselves in the understanding of His unwavering presence.

As Joshua stepped into this new chapter, having previously accompanied Moses in leading two million people through the wilderness, he was met with divine reassurance from God regarding His constant presence. Moses himself had once implored God, stating that without His presence, they should not proceed. The Psalmist echoes this sentiment, affirming that in the presence of God, even the mightiest obstacles are overcome, and the very nature of reality is transformed. God serves as the anchor for our souls, and recognizing His omnipresence is crucial, especially during challenging times when we may lose sight of this truth. The Scriptures remind us that there is no place we can go where God is not present; whether in the depths or the heights, He is there. Therefore, it is vital to remain aware of His abiding presence, for He is Jehovah Shammah, the Lord who is always present, ever faithful, and timely in His support.

In concluding the anchor series, it is essential for someone present this morning to depart with a revitalized awareness of God’s divine presence. This renewed consciousness is crucial; therefore, I encourage you to affirm to yourself that God is with you, always by your side, and will never abandon you. It is vital to recognize that God is steadfastly holding onto you, and in turn, you must not let go of Him. Many individuals may find themselves drifting away, especially at the start of the year when expectations may not align with reality. If January has not unfolded as anticipated, it is easy to feel isolated and question the effectiveness of remaining steadfast. However, patience in God’s timing and an awareness of His constant presence are paramount.

For those facing tumultuous times, the key is to remain anchored. The intensity of the storm is less significant than the strength of your anchor and the foundation upon which you stand. A profound understanding of God’s love, as articulated in 1 John 4:4, reveals that perfect love dispels fear. When you internalize this truth, it empowers you to confront your fears. Reflecting on my own experiences during my formative years in boarding school, I recall feeling vulnerable due to my small stature. I was often overshadowed by larger peers, yet I learned that the strength of my spirit and the love surrounding me provided a sense of security. This lesson underscores the importance of recognizing and embracing the divine love that sustains us through life’s challenges.

Emeka was notably large for his age, both in height and build, which made him an imposing figure among his peers. His physical presence was such that he could easily take something from you, like your bread, leaving you powerless to respond other than to plead with him. On one occasion, I learned that my older brother was scheduled to visit me at the boarding house, and I prepared myself for Emeka’s inevitable antics. Although my brother had not yet arrived, the mere anticipation of his visit prompted me to warn Emeka to behave himself. I felt a sense of urgency as I reminded him that my brother would soon be there, but Emeka merely scoffed at my concerns, teasing me about my reliance on my brother for support.

When my brother finally arrived, I recounted my experiences with Emeka, only to be met with laughter as he playfully mocked my predicament. He pointed out that I should not wait for him to assert myself, suggesting that I was not acting like a man. However, I found solace in the belief that God is not like my brother; He is always present and does not require an invitation to be with us. The realization that God is already by our side instills a sense of courage and boldness in the face of adversity. As you prepare for your day, remember that even if God was not present in your workplace before your arrival, your consciousness of His presence brings Him with you, fulfilling His promise to always be by your side.

In the first chapter of Joshua, verse 5, it is stated that no individual will be able to confront you throughout your life, as God assures His unwavering presence, akin to His companionship with Moses. This divine promise emphasizes that when one enters into a covenant with God and is assigned a mission, God not only initiates that assignment but also accompanies the individual throughout the journey. The assurance of God’s presence is paramount; when Moses expressed his reluctance to proceed without God’s guidance, the Lord affirmed that His presence would indeed accompany them, providing peace and reassurance. This highlights the importance of divine support in fulfilling one’s purpose.

The narrative of the Israelites at the Red Sea, as recounted in the Book of Exodus, serves as a profound lesson for contemporary believers. When faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, akin to standing before a vast and daunting sea, it is crucial to recognize and trust in God’s presence. The Israelites were instructed to cease their anxious movements and instead take decisive action, demonstrating faith in God’s promise. This experience resonates with modern challenges, particularly in business or personal endeavors, where obstacles may appear overwhelming. The collective faith of a community can inspire individuals to take bold steps, as witnessing others’ testimonies can ignite one’s own courage to move forward, reinforcing the necessity of being part of a supportive faith community.

It is essential for believers to avoid walking alone in their faith journey. Engaging with a faith community, such as a church or a connect group, is crucial for spiritual growth and support. In today’s world, where motivation can often feel scarce and disheartening, being part of a community provides the encouragement needed to persevere. Regardless of the challenges faced in various industries or personal endeavors, the only true source of stability and hope lies in the revelation of God’s Word. This divine knowledge serves as the anchor for our souls, guiding us through turbulent times and reminding us of our purpose.

The parable of the sower, as explained by Jesus in Luke Chapter 8, offers profound insights into why some individuals struggle to remain anchored in their faith. The seed, representing the Word of God, is sown in different types of soil, symbolizing the hearts of those who hear it. While some receive the Word with joy, they may lack the depth of understanding necessary to sustain their faith when faced with adversity. It is vital for believers to allow the Word to take root in their hearts, fostering a deep-seated assurance of God’s presence. If doubts arise, particularly in challenging circumstances, it is crucial to revisit the promises of God rather than succumb to uncertainty.

The speaker expressed uncertainty regarding the listener’s comprehension of his message. He elaborated on the parable of the seeds, explaining that those represented by the seeds that fell on rocky ground are individuals who initially receive the word with enthusiasm and joy. However, their faith lacks depth, leading them to falter when faced with challenges or temptations. He emphasized that external pressures, such as negative reports or financial concerns, should not diminish the profound understanding and revelation one has received in their heart. The speaker urged the audience to remain steadfast and attentive, highlighting the importance of nurturing one’s spiritual growth despite life’s adversities.

Furthermore, he discussed the seeds that fell among thorns, which symbolize those who, after hearing the word, become overwhelmed by the worries, wealth, and pleasures of life, ultimately failing to produce any lasting fruit. The speaker cautioned against complacency, noting that a false sense of security can arise when one becomes too comfortable and neglects the necessity of engaging with the word of God. He reiterated that all blessings come from God, and one cannot outgrow the need for spiritual nourishment. The message culminated in a focus on the seeds that fell on good soil, representing those who, with a sincere and noble heart, not only retain the word but also cultivate it patiently, allowing it to flourish and bear fruit despite the distractions and deceitfulness of worldly pleasures.

The most significant aspects of life should never be subjected to the whims of trivial matters. The teachings of the Bible emphasize that wisdom is of utmost importance, serving as the foundation of our understanding. It is essential to begin each day with a reflective mindset, pondering what thoughts and assurances we carry in our hearts. As we prepare for the day ahead, we should consider the promises of God that anchor us, whether it be a promise of favor, deliverance, or restoration. These divine assurances are crucial as we navigate our daily interactions and challenges, ensuring that we remain steadfast and focused on what truly matters.

Moreover, it is vital to cultivate a heart that embraces the word of God, as it is described as good soil that nurtures growth. By internalizing these teachings, we allow them to flourish within us, producing fruitful outcomes over time. When we are deeply rooted in our faith, we find ourselves less concerned with external pressures and more assured of God’s presence in our lives. This unwavering confidence enables us to journey through life’s processes with a sense of purpose, trusting that God is guiding us toward a greater destination. Embracing this journey with patience and faith allows us to witness the unfolding of His promises in our lives.

In Acts of the Apostles, specifically chapter 16, verse 25, the narrative of Paul and Silas reveals a profound truth about their experience in prison. Rather than focusing solely on their desire for freedom, their hearts were centered on fellowship and worship. This perspective stemmed from their understanding that all circumstances ultimately work together for the good of those who love God. Life often presents challenges that may seem overwhelming, leading individuals to feel as though God is silent during their trials. Much like an examiner who observes a student during an examination without intervening, God may appear distant while we navigate our own tests. However, it is essential to recognize that this silence does not equate to absence; rather, it is a time for reflection and endurance.

The scripture in James 1:12 emphasizes the blessings that come to those who endure trials, stating that those who remain steadfast will receive the crown of life promised by the Lord. In moments of hardship, it is crucial to shift the focus from a desperate plea for immediate relief to a deeper engagement in fellowship with God. This approach fosters spiritual growth and understanding, as it allows individuals to trust in God’s overarching plan. While many may be preoccupied with the desire for a quick escape from their troubles, true strength lies in maintaining faith and seeking communion with God during these trying times. Ultimately, it is through this fellowship that one can find solace and assurance, knowing that deliverance will come in due time.

The scripture recounts an extraordinary event where, at midnight, praises were sung to the Lord, and the jailers were witnesses to this remarkable display of faith. It is noteworthy that their praises did not consist of pleas for liberation, such as cries for the doors to be broken open. This is evident from the subsequent earthquake that miraculously opened the prison doors; rather than seizing the opportunity to escape, the prisoners remained in their cells, continuing their worship. The jailer, astonished by their unwavering faith, questioned whether they were indeed human, as they chose to stay despite their freedom being granted. Faced with the prospect of his own demise, he sought guidance from them, asking what he must do to attain salvation, indicating that their demeanor and faith had profoundly impacted him. This scenario illustrates that the prisoners were not merely seeking physical release but were acutely aware of God’s presence in their midst.

This situation draws parallels to the account of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the third chapter of Daniel, where they boldly declared their faith in God’s ability to deliver them from the fiery furnace. They possessed a profound understanding of God’s sovereignty, expressing their willingness to face the consequences of their refusal to bow down to the king’s image, regardless of the outcome. Their declaration emphasized a deep-seated belief that all circumstances ultimately work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. When they were cast into the furnace, they were not alone; the presence of a fourth figure, described as resembling the Son of God, accompanied them, signifying God’s abiding presence in their trials. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder that, in the face of adversity, one can find solace and strength in the knowledge that God is ever-present, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Many individuals are currently experiencing significant challenges, akin to being subjected to a microwave’s intense heat, while others have endured trials that resemble the searing flames of a furnace. Those who faced such trials often found themselves in peril, yet their faith in God’s presence provided them with the strength to persevere. They anchored their souls in this belief, which ultimately led to their salvation. I declare over your life this morning, in the name of Jesus, that the enduring presence of God will become a central theme in your life. You will come to recognize and understand His presence deeply, as affirmed in the name of the Lord Jesus. This is echoed in 1 Timothy 6:12, which encourages believers to “fight the good fight of faith” and to hold firmly to the eternal life to which they have been called, ensuring that external pressures do not divert your focus from this vital truth.

As we conclude this morning, I would like to offer two recommendations for maintaining your spiritual anchor, particularly through the practice of recognizing God’s presence. When faced with discouragement and the enemy’s whispers suggesting that God has abandoned you, view this as an opportunity to actively engage with His presence. This was exemplified by Paul and Silas, who, despite their imprisonment, chose to sing praises to God, thereby affirming their faith. Engaging in the practice of His presence daily fosters a renewed awareness of His nearness. For instance, when you find yourself alone in your car, speaking the Word of God aloud serves as a powerful form of confession. By aligning your thoughts and declarations with God’s truth, you reinforce your connection to Him. Therefore, make it a habit to confess His Word regularly, as this practice will help you remain anchored in His presence amidst life’s challenges.

It is essential to communicate to the Divine that His teachings reside within your heart and are consistently on your lips.

The scripture emphasizes that the book of the Law should remain ever-present in your speech, as it is through continuous meditation on these teachings, both day and night, that one can fully adhere to all that is prescribed within. This commitment to the Law is not merely a suggestion; it is a directive that promises prosperity and success as a direct result of such dedication. The act of vocalizing these truths is a vital practice in cultivating a conscious awareness of His presence, as it is through the spoken word that one can truly engage with the divine.

By consistently affirming the word of God, you align yourself with His will, effectively taking a stand against any adversarial forces. When the teachings of God are absent from your speech, you find yourself in a state of uncertainty, caught between conflicting beliefs. However, by declaring your faith and allegiance to God’s promises, you make it clear where your loyalties lie, thereby reinforcing your identity as a believer. This principle is echoed in Psalm 91, where the psalmist proclaims trust in the Lord as a refuge and fortress. The act of declaring such truths not only serves as a personal affirmation of faith but also activates His divine presence, ensuring that you are shielded from harm and enveloped in His protection.

It is essential to engage in the practice of confessing God’s word consistently, as this serves a significant purpose in our spiritual journey. To facilitate this, we have developed an anchored confession that will be distributed shortly. It is crucial that you take this confession with you from this service and place it in a visible location, such as your wardrobe or dressing table. By doing so, you will be reminded of it regularly, perhaps even while applying your makeup. Instead of allowing your thoughts to dwell on those who may not acknowledge you, focus on proclaiming the word of God. This practice not only reinforces your faith but also helps you remain anchored in your relationship with God. When you have completed your confession, the opinions of others become inconsequential, as you have already engaged in a meaningful dialogue with the Divine.

Recently, while praying in the spirit, I found myself sitting at the edge of my bed, facing a blank wall. In that moment, I felt a prompting from God to place something there that I could read periodically. Inspired by this revelation, I approached PT and suggested that we collaborate on creating a confession for the entire congregation. This initiative was not merely for my personal benefit; it was a response to what God had communicated to me. I encourage you to select a confession that resonates with you, one that you can recite frequently. It is vital that this affirmation is always within your sight, rather than tucked away in a diary. By keeping it visible, you will be reminded to speak it aloud regularly, reinforcing your faith and commitment to God’s word.

This morning, I would like to engage in a conversation with someone regarding our aspirations for the year ahead. Many of us have set specific goals that we wish to achieve, and it is essential to articulate these ambitions clearly, as we discussed in December. Rather than simply filing them away, it is crucial to display them prominently, ensuring they remain visible in our daily lives. For instance, if your target is to reach a turnover of fifty million dollars each month, write it down and place it on a wall in your office or personal space. If you feel hesitant to display it publicly, consider keeping it in your room, where it can serve as a constant reminder. Each time you affirm this goal, you can declare it with conviction, invoking the power of faith to manifest your desires.

Moreover, if you aspire to acquire a beautiful home this year, seek out an image that closely resembles your dream house. The internet offers a plethora of free resources where you can download such images. Once you have found the perfect representation, place it in a location where you will see it frequently, reinforcing your vision with positive affirmations. By consistently focusing on what God has placed in your heart and aligning your confessions with His promises, you are actively participating in the process of bringing the intangible into reality. As you visualize and declare your intentions, you will witness the transformation of your dreams into tangible outcomes. This year, many will embark on new ventures, whether it be starting a business or taking ownership of a property that once existed only in their imagination. Let us celebrate these milestones together, affirming our faith and commitment to achieving our goals.

Today, we engage in the activation of divine presence through the act of praise, a concept that is well illustrated in Acts 16:25. The Scriptures further emphasize this in Ephesians 5:18, which advises against excessive drinking, instead urging believers to be filled with the Spirit. This filling of the Spirit is expressed through communication with one another in the form of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as well as through singing and making melody in our hearts directed towards the Lord. Verse 20 of the same chapter encourages us to give thanks for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is essential to cultivate a daily practice of singing and worshiping God, rather than reserving such expressions solely for church gatherings.

In our modern context, many individuals find themselves distracted by various forms of entertainment, such as YouTube, often leading to a sense of emptiness or discontent. Instead of spending time on content that does not nourish the spirit, one should seek to ignite divine presence through uplifting music. Utilizing features that allow for continuous play of worship songs can facilitate a deeper connection with God, even when one struggles to recall specific songs. In moments of distress, like those experienced by Paul and Silas in prison, it is crucial to remember that God can inspire a song in our hearts, even in the darkest hours. By immersing ourselves in worship, we can experience a profound reassurance of His presence, empowering us to face challenges with renewed confidence and the assurance that we are not alone.
