The Duty Of Care

THE DUTY OF CARE

This morning, I am addressing a topic entitled “The Duty of Care” as part of our ongoing Love Struck series, which focuses on the profound love of God manifested through Christ Jesus. It is with great reverence that I proclaim glory to Jesus. Our scriptural reference for today is found in Matthew chapter 25. To streamline our reading, I will begin at verse 37, where the text reveals a dialogue between the righteous and the Lord. The righteous inquire, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you as a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?” The King responds, affirming that whatever was done for the least of His brethren was done for Him.

Continuing to verse 41, we encounter a stark contrast as the King addresses those on His left, instructing them to depart into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. He recounts their failures to provide for Him in times of need, stating, “I was hungry, and you gave me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink.” The condemned will respond, bewildered, asking when they failed to minister to Him. The King will clarify that their neglect of the least of His brethren equated to neglecting Him. This passage serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibilities toward one another, emphasizing that our actions toward the marginalized reflect our relationship with Christ. Let us take a moment to pray, asking the Father to bless the sharing of His Word this morning, that it may impart grace to all who hear it, transforming lives, bringing healing, and offering deliverance.

The Holy Spirit is invited to touch the lives of everyone present, including those watching online and those who will engage with this message in the future. May His grace fill our hearts, fostering profound transformation that inspires us to become devoted lovers of both humanity and the Kingdom of God. In the name of Jesus, we seek a resounding affirmation of this prayer. In this segment of scripture, Jesus emphasizes the consequences that arise when God confronts individuals regarding their neglect or failure to act towards others. He equates their actions towards fellow human beings with their actions towards Him, highlighting the interconnectedness of our treatment of others and our relationship with the divine. Following this service, some may be approached with questions regarding their interactions with others, and it is important to approach these discussions with openness, recognizing that we are all on a journey of growth and understanding.

Jesus presents a compelling illustration of the responsibility we bear to care for one another, underscoring that our actions—or inactions—towards others reflect our understanding of God’s Kingdom. Each person we encounter is an extension of God, and our kindness or neglect towards them can be seen as a reflection of our service to Him. The acts of visiting the sick, clothing the naked, and supporting the imprisoned are not merely charitable deeds; they are, in essence, acts of service to God Himself. To further contextualize this, it is worth noting that the legal principle of duty of care, established in landmark cases within common law, serves as a foundational concept that underscores our moral and ethical obligations to one another. This principle aligns with the teachings of Jesus, reinforcing the idea that our responsibilities extend beyond mere legalities to encompass a deeper, spiritual duty to care for our fellow beings.

The case of Donoghue v. Stevenson, which took place in 1932, is a landmark legal matter that arose from an incident involving Miss May Donoghue. While visiting a store, she was given a bottle of ginger beer by a friend. Unfortunately, the bottle, which was not made of clear glass, contained a decomposing snail, a fact that Miss Donoghue only discovered after consuming a significant portion of the beverage. Following this unsettling revelation, she fell ill and was diagnosed with gastroenteritis by a physician. In light of her condition, Donoghue decided to pursue legal action against Mr. David Stevenson, the manufacturer of the ginger beer, seeking damages amounting to £500, a considerable sum at that time.

Donoghue’s legal strategy was complicated by the fact that she had not purchased the drink herself, which precluded her from suing Stevenson for breach of contract. Instead, her legal counsel argued that Stevenson had failed in his duty of care towards consumers, resulting in injury due to negligence. At that time, the legal framework surrounding such claims was largely untested, and Stevenson’s legal team contested Donoghue’s case on the grounds that no precedent existed for her claim. Although her initial lawsuit was unsuccessful, she was granted the opportunity to appeal to the House of Lords, which held the authority to review appellate cases. The pivotal judgment delivered by Lord Atkin established that manufacturers have a responsibility for the safety of their products, particularly when they cannot be inspected by consumers, thereby laying the groundwork for modern negligence law. Lord Atkin articulated the principle that one must exercise reasonable care to avoid actions that could foreseeably harm others, a doctrine that has since become a cornerstone of tort law.

In legal terms, the question of who constitutes my neighbor is answered by identifying those individuals who are directly and significantly impacted by my actions. It is essential to consider these individuals when evaluating my conduct or any potential omissions. This understanding laid the groundwork for the Principle of Negligence within the realm of Tort Law, a concept that is likely familiar to the legal professionals present today. For those who may not be versed in law, as Pastor TJ mentioned earlier, it is beneficial to be aware of the concept of Tort Law and the associated Duty of Care, particularly exemplified by the landmark case of Donoghue v. Stevenson. This case serves as a pivotal reference point in discussions surrounding negligence and the responsibilities we hold towards others.

Reflecting on personal experiences, I recall an incident that occurred two years ago at the Mainland Centre, where I was invited to speak on a Saturday morning. After my engagement, my assistant and I decided to stop at a well-known eatery in the Maryland Ikeja area for a snack and a drink. Upon purchasing a meat pie and a beverage, I noticed something unusual when attempting to open the drink; it lacked carbonation, which immediately raised my suspicions. Upon further inspection, I discovered a concerning amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Rather than resorting to social media to voice my concerns, which can often lead to unnecessary complications, I opted to have my assistant contact the company directly. This approach not only reflects a more responsible course of action but also acknowledges the potential personal connections one might have with the business in question.

The situation arose because you chose to make your concerns public without first attempting to communicate with the involved parties privately. Consequently, we reached out to them, and after approximately a week, I received a courteous email acknowledging my status as a public figure. They expressed gratitude for my discretion in not disclosing the matter publicly. This led me to ponder the implications of pursuing legal action against the establishment or the manufacturers of the beverage in question. Unlike Miss Donoghue, who took legal steps after suffering illness from a product she consumed, I had not ingested the drink. Therefore, I refrained from initiating any legal proceedings. Instead, I received two crates of the beverage as a conciliatory gesture from the company, which I found repulsive and ultimately discarded, as I feared that consuming it could jeopardize my health. The gesture of sending two crates was not what I sought; my intention was not to receive a product but to highlight the ongoing issues stemming from thoughtless actions that affect others.

To illustrate this point further, consider a scenario where you return home after a long day, perhaps to a semi-detached house in a residential estate. After attending various services, you arrive only to discover that your neighbor is hosting a party without prior notification. The estate management failed to inform you, and your neighbor neglected to communicate their plans, leaving you unable to enjoy a peaceful Sunday evening. Such disruptions can be particularly frustrating, especially when you seek solace and quietude after a busy day. In some instances, the noise from these gatherings can be so overwhelming that it disrupts the ability of others within a considerable radius to engage in their own activities, including spiritual practices. This scenario underscores a broader issue: the tendency of individuals to act without considering the repercussions of their actions on those around them, thereby creating an environment where personal desires overshadow communal harmony.

It is essential to grasp the significance of the concepts I am conveying, particularly in relation to the responsibilities that arise from our duty of care.

This month, our discussions have centered around the profound theme of love, specifically the love of God as manifested in Christ Jesus. In the context of this discourse, I urge you to reflect on the words of 1 John 4:7, which states, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” This passage emphasizes that true love is not merely an emotional response but rather a conscious decision. The essence of love, as illustrated in John 3:16, underscores that God’s love for the world was demonstrated through His willingness to give. This prompts us to consider how our own expressions of love translate into tangible actions and responsibilities toward others.

In our daily lives, it is crucial to recognize that love must manifest as a commitment to the well-being of those around us. This recognition of duty of care implies that our actions, whether direct or indirect, can have significant consequences for others. It is not sufficient to adopt an indifferent attitude toward the potential negative impacts of our behavior. The legal precedent established in the case of Donoghue vs. Stevenson highlights the expectation that we must exercise due diligence to prevent harm to others. In contemporary society, this principle is often overlooked, particularly in public services such as transportation, where a lack of care can lead to adverse experiences for individuals. For instance, one might find themselves in a public bus that is poorly maintained, risking damage to their clothing without any recourse for complaint. This scenario illustrates the broader implications of our duty of care and the necessity for a more conscientious approach to our interactions and responsibilities toward one another.

As Christians, it is imperative to recognize that our responsibilities extend far beyond mere financial contributions or adherence to societal norms. The act of building a home for others cannot be superficial; it must be rooted in genuine care and compassion. If a dwelling is fraught with leaks and structural issues, it reflects a lack of commitment to the well-being of those who inhabit it. Simply fulfilling one’s financial obligations, such as paying tithes, does not equate to being a good Christian. True Christian values emphasize that our actions towards others are a reflection of our relationship with God. In Matthew 25, it is articulated that acts of kindness towards others are, in essence, acts of service to God Himself. Therefore, it is crucial to introspect on how often we may have acted in ways that disregard the welfare of others, as this is a significant moral consideration.

Moreover, our duty to care for the world around us is not merely a suggestion; it is an obligation that stems from our identity as individuals born of God. The scripture in 1 John 4:7 emphasizes that those who are born of God are inherently born of love, as God embodies love itself. This understanding compels us to operate under a higher moral framework that transcends human laws, which often dictate a minimal standard of care. The law of love, as established by God, calls us to actively seek the well-being of others, not just to refrain from causing harm. This principle is exemplified in the landmark case of Donoghue v. Stevenson, which highlights the legal duty of care. However, the divine law of love urges us to go further, encouraging us to engage in acts that uplift and bless others, thereby fulfilling our true Christian calling.

It is essential to recognize that our responsibilities extend beyond merely avoiding being a nuisance; they encompass the active pursuit of being a blessing to those around us.

This morning, I encourage you to reflect on your interactions with your neighbors and consider how you can intentionally contribute positively to their lives during this season. Let us seek divine assistance in our efforts to embody this spirit of generosity and kindness. It is crucial to understand that our care for others should not be motivated by the desire for personal gain or recognition. There are individuals who only exhibit concern when they anticipate some form of reward or acknowledgment, which undermines the true essence of altruism. For instance, one might spend a significant amount on a charitable act while investing even more in promoting that act through media channels, revealing a self-serving motive rather than genuine compassion.

This brings us to a pivotal question: if every member of the congregation mirrored your behavior, what kind of environment would the church cultivate? Would it be a warm and welcoming community, or would it lean towards being cold and calculating? This inquiry is vital, as it compels us to evaluate how our actions and inactions influence God’s overarching plan for our lives and the world around us. From our families to our places of worship and workplaces, the impact of our conduct is far-reaching. It is imperative that we engage in self-reflection to ensure that our contributions align with the values of love and service, as emphasized in 1 Corinthians 13, which reminds us that even the most sacrificial acts devoid of love are ultimately meaningless.

The Scriptures indicate that God has a purpose for placing individuals within families, suggesting that any familial connections we find ourselves in are part of a divine plan. This implies that there is a specific role or responsibility that each person is meant to fulfill within their family unit. When one neglects this responsibility, they may inadvertently obstruct the work that God intends to accomplish through them. Similarly, in a spiritual context, the Bible asserts that those who are rooted in the house of God will thrive in His presence. This notion emphasizes that being part of a church community is not merely a matter of attendance but involves active participation and contribution to the collective well-being of the congregation.

In this church, numerous acts of kindness and service occur spontaneously, reflecting the commitment of its members to one another and to the community. For instance, upon entering the church, one might notice individuals assisting with parking, offering warm greetings, and providing hand sanitizers—all actions performed without any formal request. This raises an important question: what would the church environment look like if these selfless contributions ceased? There are remarkable stories of individuals who take initiative without being prompted, such as a dedicated member who tends to the church’s garden, enhancing its beauty without any official role. Additionally, a brother in the congregation recently expressed his desire to expand the reach of the church’s television broadcast, demonstrating the proactive spirit that thrives within this community. Such examples highlight the vital role that each member plays in fostering a vibrant and supportive church atmosphere.

I have committed to sponsoring an additional station from the church and have decided to cover the costs for TVC this year, which amounts to millions of naira on a quarterly basis. This morning, while parking in the car park, I observed that the signage we had placed on the floor had significantly faded. Pastor TJ informed me that two individuals had reached out regarding this issue; one inquired about the cost, while the other offered to send people to address it. It is evident that these individuals feel a divine prompting to take action, and their willingness to respond is commendable. If everyone in our community exhibited such initiative, we would not witness any deterioration in our church’s facilities.

Moreover, there are numerous individuals who contribute to specific initiatives, such as the Elevate program, which encompasses 200 different outreach efforts, often without any expectation of recognition. We are fortunate to have professionals within our congregation, such as lawyers who provide pro bono services, assisting those in need without charge. Our legal aid department diligently takes on cases for free, and we have a public relations firm, operated by a church member, that has supported us pro bono for the past four years. Additionally, one of our esteemed leaders, a partner in a highly regarded law firm, offers legal assistance to the church at no cost. If everyone contributed as generously as these individuals, we would not face challenges such as inadequate air conditioning in our worship space. It is easy for attendees to attribute the church’s successes solely to the lead pastor or the pastoral team, yet many of the positive developments occur behind the scenes, often unbeknownst to me until after the fact. My role is to pray for those who respond to the divine call to serve, as their actions are instrumental in making our church a thriving community.

Within this church community, there exists a dedicated group of human resources professionals who are deeply committed to fostering the career development of individuals. Additionally, there are medical personnel who go above and beyond to ensure that members regain their health. In critical health situations, we have access to medical professionals who can be contacted directly. They often provide guidance on whether a patient should be referred to a general hospital or a specialist, and in many cases, they offer their services at little to no cost. This collaborative spirit allows us to address numerous medical challenges without incurring significant expenses, as these individuals actively seek to meet the needs of others.

The church also plays a vital role in supporting education through scholarship programs for underprivileged students. School owners within the community have reached out to us, offering to sponsor two or three students from reputable institutions in Victoria Island as part of our church’s scholarship initiative. Furthermore, many members have generously donated their vehicles to assist fellow congregants in need. This culture of generosity extends to various connect groups that mobilize resources to help one another, whether it be covering rent, paying school fees, or providing assistance to families facing difficulties. Such acts of kindness raise an important question: if every member were to adopt a self-centered approach, disregarding the struggles of others, what kind of church community would we ultimately create?

It is essential for us to reflect on the nature of our church and the role it plays in our lives and communities. As we embark on this journey of introspection, we must not settle for the current state of love that we experience; rather, we should strive to ignite a deeper passion for love and service. I commend those who are actively contributing to our community, yet it is crucial to recognize that this is merely the beginning of our mission. The world is in dire need of love, and we must start by fostering it within our immediate families and extend it to our spiritual family. From this foundation, we can reach out to the broader world, understanding that the responsibility of nurturing a loving church does not rest solely on the shoulders of the pastors. The scripture reminds us in 1 John 4:7 that we are called to love one another, as love originates from God.

Let us envision the transformative impact on both our church and the world if everyone were to contribute as you do. Consider the implications if every individual served with the same dedication you exhibit; would we have enough volunteers to usher or maintain order during services? Would there be a robust outreach to the less fortunate, including those in prisons or other marginalized communities? In a few weeks, we will host the UBOMI outreach, a significant medical initiative aimed at assisting thousands. If everyone mirrored your commitment, would there be sufficient volunteers or resources to support this endeavor? Furthermore, if everyone drove with the same caution as you, would our streets be safer, or would hospitals be overwhelmed with accident victims? Lastly, if everyone prayed with the same fervor as you, would we witness a revival in our communities? The power of prayer extends beyond personal petitions; it can catalyze change on a larger scale, as evidenced by those who have fervently prayed for their neighborhoods, leading to restored marriages and revitalized communities.

In recent times, the role of family has become increasingly significant within the community, particularly among those who engage in prayer to combat addiction. There exists a troubling number of children who have fallen victim to heroin and cannabis use, yet through the power of prayer, many have found salvation. This illustrates the profound impact that collective prayer can have on transforming our world. If individuals were to pray with the same fervor for change and healing, rather than solely for financial gain or personal breakthroughs, we might witness a remarkable shift in our society. Jesus seeks out those who are willing to be agents of change, and it is through prayer that we can initiate this transformation.

Moreover, the concept of forgiveness plays a crucial role in fostering love and understanding within our communities. It is disheartening to observe that some individuals exhaust their capacity for forgiveness early in the year, often forgetting its importance as time progresses. If everyone embraced forgiveness as you do, the presence of love in our world would be far more pronounced. Additionally, the manner in which we communicate significantly influences the self-esteem of others. Words can either uplift or devastate; corrosive language can strip away a person’s sense of identity, much like acid erodes physical matter. Therefore, it is essential to approach written communication with care. Before sending an email, one should reflect on how the message might be received, considering the potential impact on the recipient’s self-worth. By doing so, we contribute positively to the emotional well-being of those around us, fostering an environment of support rather than one of discouragement.

It is essential to recognize the impact of our actions on others, particularly when we impose demands that may render them feeling inadequate or unvalued. The question arises: if everyone were to act with such expectations, would it be possible for society to maintain its sanity? This reflection prompts us to consider our sensitivity to the needs of those around us, regardless of whether those needs are significant or minor. As we conclude this message, it is imperative for each individual to grasp that the demands of business should never serve as a justification for neglecting the care and compassion we owe to one another.

The example of Jesus serves as a profound reminder of the importance of attentiveness and kindness. He was never too preoccupied to extend compassion, whether it was to Peter’s mother-in-law, children, or the blind man Bartimaeus. Jesus even took notice of Zacchaeus, who, despite his efforts to be seen by climbing a sycamore tree, might have gone unnoticed by others too busy with their own lives. In a remarkable display of empathy, Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’s home without any prior request from the man. This illustrates a vital principle: we all bear a responsibility to care for one another, and we should strive to inspire love in others through the strength of our own compassion. This morning, let us reflect on how our love can encourage others to love more deeply, a question that holds significant weight in our interactions. Glory be to Jesus.
