THE GREATNESS CURRICULUM
In the Gospel of Matthew, specifically in chapter 20, verses 25 to 27, Jesus articulates a profound understanding of true greatness. He addresses His followers, highlighting the contrast between the leadership styles of worldly rulers and the principles that should govern His disciples. While the leaders of the Gentiles exert authority and dominance over their subjects, Jesus emphasizes that such behavior should not characterize His followers. Instead, He presents a radical redefinition of greatness, stating that those who aspire to be great must embrace the role of a servant, and those who wish to be first must adopt the position of a slave. This teaching serves as a foundational principle for the church, establishing a divine mandate to foster an environment where greatness is synonymous with selfless service.
The church is called to cultivate a space where individuals can thrive and realize their potential through acts of service, thereby impacting the lives of others positively. This understanding of greatness must be localized, particularly in the context of national development and community building. In a time when societal challenges are prevalent, the church’s role becomes increasingly critical. It is essential for the church to engage actively in addressing the issues facing the nation, as this is where the need for transformative action is most urgent. The call to greatness through service is not merely a spiritual ideal but a practical necessity for the betterment of society.
Initially, there may have been frustration regarding the criticism directed at the church, particularly when it is blamed for the myriad problems plaguing the nation, such as the failing educational and political systems. However, a deeper understanding reveals that the church is indeed meant to be a beacon of hope and a preservative force against societal decay. As Jesus proclaimed that His followers are the light of the world and the salt of the earth, it becomes clear that the responsibility lies with the church to illuminate the darkness and combat the destructive forces that lead to poverty and despair. The acknowledgment of this role fosters a sense of accountability, urging the church to rise to the occasion and fulfill its purpose in bringing about positive change and abundant life, as promised by Christ.
It is imperative that we no longer be categorized among the poorest nations globally, with a staggering 61% of our population living beneath the poverty threshold. Regardless of whether one adheres to the United Nations’ definition or any alternative interpretation, the essence of poverty remains unchanged. This situation signifies that our efforts are not yielding the desired impact, and it suggests that our influence is diminishing. Consequently, it appears that the church has been marginalized, and it is essential for us to rise from this state of despair. We must embrace our role as a beacon of hope and a source of preservation, acknowledging that true greatness is rooted in our commitment to service.
The call to greatness is not merely a lofty aspiration; it is a responsibility that we must accept wholeheartedly. This notion is echoed in the biblical narrative of Genesis 12, where God instructed Abraham to leave his homeland and promised to transform him into a great nation. The divine assurance that Abraham would be a blessing and that his name would be exalted serves as a profound reminder of our potential. As descendants of Abraham, we are called to embody these principles, reflecting the greatness that is inherent in our identity. It is essential to recognize that this greatness is not self-serving but is fundamentally about serving others, as emphasized by Jesus, who taught that true greatness is found in acts of service.
In our pursuit of greatness, we must first engage in self-leadership, a theme that will be explored in our upcoming midweek services through a series of leadership seminars. The wisdom found in Proverbs 6:6-11 encourages us to observe the industriousness of ants, which operate without a designated leader yet manage to prepare and gather resources effectively. This serves as a powerful metaphor for the importance of initiative and diligence in our own lives. By learning from the example of the ants, we can cultivate a mindset of responsibility and proactive engagement, ultimately contributing to the elevation of our community and the fulfillment of our collective potential.
A fundamental inquiry that arises whenever I engage with that particular scripture pertains to the cognitive capacity of an ant, even as the ant itself possesses a limited brain. This prompts a reflection on the significant potential that we, as humans, carry within ourselves. The scripture encourages us to observe the ant, which, despite its diminutive size, exhibits remarkable abilities to navigate its environment and address challenges independently, without the need for a guiding authority or ruler. This observation serves as a profound lesson in self-sufficiency and resilience, and I anticipate the opportunity to delve deeper into this topic in future discussions, particularly as we explore themes of leadership in various contexts.
The ant, though small, embodies a unique grace and divine endowment that enables it to thrive and resolve its own issues autonomously.
In contrast, many individuals often seek external sources to attribute their failures or challenges, rather than taking personal responsibility. The essence of true leadership and greatness begins with self-leadership; one must first master the ability to lead oneself effectively. If an individual is unable to navigate their own life and resolve personal dilemmas, it becomes exceedingly challenging to extend that capability to others. The journey toward greatness is rooted in the ability to confront and solve one’s own problems, which subsequently empowers one to address larger societal issues.
In the context of Nigeria, a significant challenge within the political landscape is the prevalence of individuals who have not adequately addressed their own issues yet aspire to resolve the problems faced by the populace. Many of these individuals lack a track record of contributing positively to the economy or enhancing the nation’s GDP prior to their political endeavors. This raises questions about their capacity to lead effectively and foster growth. True greatness is achieved through serving others, and effective service is contingent upon one’s ability to lead oneself proficiently. It is imperative for individuals to recognize the importance of self-leadership, as the overarching leadership challenges in Nigeria underscore the urgent need for capable problem solvers who can rise to the occasion and address the pressing issues facing the nation.
Nigeria is currently facing a multitude of challenges, yet within these difficulties lie significant opportunities that can be harnessed for progress. The nation possesses vast potential that remains largely untapped, and it is crucial for its citizens to recognize and unleash this potential. Unfortunately, there seems to be a pervasive mindset that obscures our vision and hinders our ability to see beyond our immediate grievances. When individuals come together, the predominant activity often becomes lamentation, which serves as a distraction from the proactive measures that could be taken. It is essential to understand that such complaints are reminiscent of a mindset that is more akin to servitude than to freedom.
Historical parallels can be drawn from the experiences of the Israelites as they transitioned from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. During their time in Egypt, their focus was on blaming Pharaoh for their plight, and once in the wilderness, they shifted their blame to Moses. This pattern of seeking someone to hold accountable for their circumstances reflects a deeper issue of dependency and a reluctance to take ownership of their situation. The Israelites even expressed a longing to return to their previous state of bondage, preferring the familiarity of their past over the uncertainty of their future. This tendency to complain and seek scapegoats is evident among many Nigerians today, suggesting a lingering mentality that inhibits progress and self-empowerment.
While it is true that leadership plays a critical role in addressing the nation’s issues, the responsibility for enacting change does not rest solely on their shoulders. The power of the citizenry is paramount and should be recognized as a force capable of driving transformation. Citizens have the right and ability to influence their environment and advocate for solutions to the problems they face. As I travel and engage with fellow Nigerians, I often find myself weary of the cycle of complaints that seems to dominate discussions about the country’s challenges. This constant focus on grievances can lead to a sense of helplessness, perpetuated by a belief that change is unattainable. It is imperative for individuals to shift their mindset from one of blame to one of action, recognizing that they possess the agency to effect meaningful change in their society.
During my address at the Saturday service last night, a profound thought struck me regarding the Lagos International Airport. It became increasingly clear that there is a pressing need for focused prayers or perhaps a collective spiritual intervention. The transformation of an airport or the establishment of a well-functioning facility should not be an insurmountable task. However, it appears that there are forces at play that recognize the significance of such gateways into a city. When these critical entry points are neglected and left in a state of disrepair, it sends a discouraging message to visitors, particularly to Nigerians returning from abroad. The first impression they receive from a dilapidated airport can lead to feelings of disillusionment and apprehension about their homeland.
The adversarial forces seem intent on creating a narrative that discourages potential returnees, echoing the biblical account of the spies sent by Moses to scout the Promised Land. Those spies, upon their return, were overwhelmed by what they perceived, leading to a sense of fear and reluctance among the people. Similarly, upon landing at our airport, one might be met with an oppressive heat and the frustration of inadequate facilities, which can evoke a sense of despair about the state of the nation. This initial experience can shape perceptions and attitudes, reinforcing a negative image that is far from the reality of what Nigeria has to offer. It is crucial to recognize that these feelings are not merely personal but are part of a larger spiritual battle for the identity and future of our nation.
In light of these reflections, I have resolved to adopt a proactive stance every time I pass through that airport. Rather than succumbing to negativity, I will declare blessings over this gateway to our nation, envisioning its transformation into a beacon of hope and progress. I firmly believe that the potential for greatness exists within our country, as evidenced by the ambitious projects currently underway, such as the construction of a major refinery. This serves as a testament to the possibilities that lie ahead. By shifting our perspective and recognizing the challenges we face as opportunities for growth, we can collectively work towards a brighter future for Nigeria. It is essential to maintain faith and optimism, as the solutions to our problems are often intertwined with the very challenges we encounter.
In Acts 10:38, the scripture reveals that God anointed Jesus Christ of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, enabling Him to perform good deeds and heal those oppressed by the devil, as God was with Him. The essence of this anointing is fundamentally linked to problem-solving. Within the context of Nigerian and African Christianity, there is a strong desire to harness this anointing for personal breakthroughs. If today’s service were designated as an anointing service focused on breakthroughs, the attendance would likely exceed the capacity of the venue, reflecting the deep-seated deprivation experienced by many. This preoccupation with individual needs often overshadows the broader necessity for visionary thinking and problem-solving skills, which are more critical now than ever.
It is imperative that we cultivate a renewed vision for ourselves and our nation, especially in a context where visionary pursuits are not adequately recognized.
The absence of a collective vision among the populace exacerbates the challenges we face, as many individuals prioritize their personal aspirations at the expense of national progress. This self-centered approach has led to a situation where some individuals are willing to exploit the nation’s resources for their own gain, disregarding the collective welfare. Therefore, it is essential to realign our individual ambitions with a shared vision that promotes the common good, fostering a sense of unity and purpose that can drive meaningful change in our society.
This morning, as I made my way to church, I was deeply disheartened by an article I encountered on Punch Online regarding the ongoing primaries and national conventions of the major political parties. The report detailed an event that took place in the South-South region, and given Punch’s reputation as a credible news source, I found the information particularly alarming. The article included interviews with individuals departing from the convention, many of whom were seen carrying substantial amounts of cash—specifically, $9,000 each. It is crucial to note that this is not mere speculation or gossip; it is a serious report from a respected newspaper, not a casual blog.
The article highlighted a troubling sentiment expressed by one delegate, who remarked that they wished the primaries would be canceled so that another round could be organized, allowing them to collect even more money. This delegate was not alone in their experience; it was reported that one candidate distributed $3,000 to each delegate, while another increased their offering from $4,000 to $5,000. Consequently, some delegates left with as much as $9,000, and others even more, having received funds from multiple candidates. This practice has led some to cynically refer to these funds as their “national cake,” a term that underscores the expectation of financial gain every four years during such political events.
The presence of approximately 4,000 delegates at the convention raises significant concerns about the source of these funds, especially considering that many candidates lack any registered businesses capable of generating such wealth. This situation reflects a broader issue within our political landscape, where individuals in power often benefit at the expense of the populace. It is imperative that we do not remain complacent in the face of such corruption. While personal breakthroughs are important, we must also focus on the collective advancement of Nigeria. As your pastor, I am invested in your individual successes, but I urge you to consider how we can collectively improve our nation, as our personal achievements are intertwined with the health of our society.
Several months ago, or perhaps a year or two in the past, our national currency experienced an official devaluation. This significant economic shift resulted in a dramatic reduction in the value of all assets denominated in naira, effectively halving their worth. Even the wealthiest individuals in Nigeria, who were once celebrated on the Forbes list, saw their financial standings diminish as a direct consequence of this devaluation. This situation reflects a broader issue of poverty that has been inflicted upon the populace due to the mismanagement of our nation’s resources and governance. It is crucial to recognize that this decline was not a result of individual failings but rather a manifestation of the profound impact that governance and political decisions can have on the lives of citizens.
One of the critical oversights made by the church has been its failure to acknowledge its role within the political landscape. By not recognizing itself as a significant political entity, the church is forfeiting substantial influence and ground in societal matters. The dynamics of spiritual warfare are often intertwined with political contexts, and it is essential to understand that many of the challenges faced are not merely spiritual in nature but are deeply rooted in political struggles. True spiritual warfare transcends the superficial manifestations of demonic oppression; it encompasses the broader societal implications of policies and laws that fundamentally alter the fabric of human life. For instance, the legalization of abortion or the advancement of movements that contradict biblical teachings are not just moral issues but are indicative of a larger political contest that affects the lives of many.
It is imperative to approach these issues with a spirit of love and understanding, particularly towards individuals who may identify with same-sex attraction. While it is essential to provide support and counsel to those navigating these challenges, it is equally important to uphold the teachings of the Bible, which categorically reject certain lifestyles. Accepting these practices as normative would imply that the biblical text is outdated or irrelevant, which undermines its authority and infallibility. The church must engage in these discussions with compassion while remaining steadfast in its beliefs, ensuring that it does not compromise its principles in the face of societal pressures. By doing so, the church can maintain its integrity and continue to be a guiding force in addressing the moral and ethical dilemmas of our time.
The question of self-love and acceptance of individuals with same-sex attraction is a complex and sensitive topic. It is essential to affirm the importance of loving oneself and encouraging others, regardless of their sexual orientation. However, the acceptance of such lifestyles must be approached with caution, particularly when it comes to reconciling these views with biblical teachings. The challenge arises when expressing these beliefs can lead to severe repercussions, including legal consequences in certain jurisdictions. This situation highlights a significant spiritual conflict, where the teachings of the Bible risk being rendered irrelevant, potentially leading future generations to dismiss it as an outdated text devoid of meaning.
It is crucial to recognize that the church’s diminishing influence in the political arena stems from a lack of understanding regarding the inherently political nature of faith. The birth of Jesus was heralded with the proclamation of a king, which instigated fear in figures like Herod. The announcement of a king’s birth signified a challenge to existing power structures, prompting Herod to take drastic measures to eliminate this perceived threat. The historical context reveals that the opposition to Jesus was not merely due to His miraculous acts but rather because He identified Himself as the King of the Jews, which inherently suggested a political agenda aimed at transforming governance and societal structures for the betterment of the people.
If Jesus were present in today’s society, His approach to healing and societal well-being would likely extend beyond individual miracles. He would prioritize systemic changes that ensure resources are allocated towards the prevention of illness and the promotion of health. Rather than focusing solely on the number of people healed through direct intervention, His efforts would be directed towards advocating for policies and practices that address the root causes of health issues. This proactive stance would reflect a commitment to transforming lives through comprehensive care and support, emphasizing the importance of governance that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens.
The Scriptures affirm that Christ embodies both the wisdom and power of God. In the context of the African church, there has been a predominant focus on the power aspect of Jesus, often overshadowing the equally significant dimension of His wisdom. The wisdom of God is deeply engaged in the realms of research, particularly in the areas of disease control, prevention, and the development of effective treatments that can eradicate diseases comprehensively. In contrast, the approach often taken in church settings tends to be more reactive, akin to addressing issues on a smaller scale rather than seeking holistic solutions. It is essential to recognize that the Bible teaches that all knowledge originates from God, and while the hidden matters belong to Him, the revelations granted to humanity are meant for our benefit and that of future generations.
The pursuit of medical advancements and cures for diseases is ultimately a manifestation of God’s will, as He desires for humanity to thrive rather than succumb to illness. Achieving breakthroughs in healthcare requires a collective effort, often necessitating political will and substantial resources. Africa is endowed with vast resources that have the potential to uplift not only its own nations but the entire continent. The film “Black Panther” serves as a metaphorical prophecy, symbolizing the latent potential within Africa, represented by the fictional element Vibranium. This concept suggests that there are spiritual and inherent qualities within the African identity that, when fully realized, can lead to significant advancements and leadership on a global scale. It is imperative for individuals to engage in prayer and action to unlock this potential, as Africa is poised for a transformative role in the world.
It is crucial for us to recognize our responsibilities in this endeavor. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus speaks to Peter, affirming his role in the establishment of the church, declaring that the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. This reference to the “gates of hell” transcends mere physical barriers; it pertains to the influential decision-making entities that operate within the spiritual realm. During the time of Jesus, these gates symbolized the places where leaders and decision-makers convened. Therefore, understanding this context encourages us to actively participate in the spiritual and practical aspects of our faith, recognizing that our contributions are vital in the ongoing battle against the forces that seek to undermine our progress and well-being.
In Proverbs 31:23, the woman described is commended for her husband’s esteemed position at the city gate, a place where the elders of the community convene. This verse highlights the significance of her influence and the respect her husband garners within the societal framework. The city gate serves as a metaphorical representation of authority and decision-making, suggesting that the values and principles upheld by this woman contribute to the well-being of her family and, by extension, the community. The implication is that the moral and ethical standards she embodies are crucial for the societal fabric, particularly in the context of governance and leadership.
The narrative draws parallels with historical figures such as Moses, David, Joseph, Daniel, and Esther, who engaged in the political arenas of their times to address not only personal challenges but also broader national issues. This underscores the notion that individual success is intertwined with collective progress. In Nigeria, it is imperative for the church and its members to recognize that while personal breakthroughs are significant, there is a divine expectation for them to contribute to the transformation of the nation. The call to action is clear: believers are urged to actively participate in the political landscape, as their involvement is essential for fostering change and implementing kingdom values that can lead to national restoration.
The discourse emphasizes that Jesus is deeply concerned with the political dynamics of every nation, as He is invested in both the spiritual and physical welfare of the populace. The quality of life and financial stability of individuals are closely linked to effective governance and political integrity. For instance, if systemic changes were to occur within the nation, many of the current prayers for basic needs could become unnecessary. The establishment of a robust credit system, social welfare programs, and affordable housing initiatives would alleviate the struggles faced by many citizens. Consequently, individuals would no longer find themselves in desperate situations, as access to resources and opportunities would be significantly improved, allowing them to focus on building their lives rather than merely surviving.
The essence of my previous statement lies in the observation that significant changes within Nigeria could lead to a transformation of many of our current prayer requests. As the nation evolves, the nature of our prayers may shift, reflecting new challenges and opportunities. It is imperative to acknowledge this dynamic and to express gratitude for the potential for positive change. In light of this, it is essential to consider practical ways to engage with the political landscape, starting with the fundamental act of prayer. Intercessory prayer should encompass all individuals in positions of authority, including leaders and government officials, as it is through such prayers that we can aspire to lead lives characterized by tranquility, godliness, and respect.
Another critical avenue for involvement is voter registration. The ability to influence governance is significantly diminished if one is unable to cast a vote. Therefore, obtaining a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) is a crucial step in this process. The campaign to secure PVCs represents merely the initial phase of our engagement; it is vital to transition from merely obtaining a PVC to actively participating in a political party as a registered member. Regardless of whether one aspires to hold public office, the primary objective should be to engage in the political process and contribute to the transformation of our governance system. Recently, the major political parties in Lagos conducted selections for gubernatorial candidates, highlighting the importance of participation in these critical decisions.
It is disheartening to note the lack of engagement among the populace, as evidenced by the minimal participation in the recent party selections. Out of approximately 2,000 adults present, only a single individual raised their hand to indicate participation in the voting process. This stark reality serves as a wake-up call, emphasizing the need for greater involvement in political matters. We often prioritize various aspects of our lives while neglecting the fundamental responsibility of civic engagement. As you depart from this gathering, I urge you to reflect on the significance of these issues. Consider revisiting this message, whether through online resources or recorded materials, to deepen your understanding of how political decisions can profoundly affect not only individual jobs but entire industries. A lack of effective governance can lead to widespread economic decline, underscoring the urgency of our collective involvement in shaping the future of our nation.
In our fast-paced lives, it is common to feel overwhelmed and reluctant to engage with our communities. However, it is essential to encourage those around us to awaken to their potential and responsibilities. By urging our neighbors and acquaintances to rise to the occasion, we can foster a culture of excellence in every endeavor. Striving for excellence not only enhances personal credibility but also cultivates influence that can be instrumental in various fields, including politics. Whether one is a banker, lawyer, or entrepreneur, establishing a reputation for integrity and competence is crucial for long-term success and respect within the community.
If one feels a calling towards a political career, it is vital to engage in community service and projects that address the needs of those around us. This hands-on approach not only demonstrates a commitment to public welfare but also builds a foundation of trust and respect among constituents. A notable example from my upbringing in Ibadan, Oyo State, is the individual known as the “Amala politics man,” who effectively utilized local cuisine to connect with the community. This concept has evolved into what is now referred to as “stomach infrastructure,” highlighting the importance of meeting basic needs as a pathway to gaining political support. Such initiatives illustrate that people are often drawn to leaders who prioritize the welfare of their communities.
As a church, we actively participate in various outreach programs, such as medical assistance and food distribution, which serve to uplift those in need. These efforts not only enhance our influence but also establish a credible track record of service that is essential for anyone considering a political path. It is imperative to begin this journey of helping others within one’s own family and gradually extend that support to the broader community. Without a history of altruism and community engagement, one should reconsider their aspirations in politics. Ultimately, genuine contributions to societal betterment are the cornerstone of effective leadership and are vital for fostering a more compassionate and equitable nation.
It is essential to provide financial support to politicians who are genuinely seeking office, particularly those candidates who demonstrate credibility and integrity. The reality is that those who finance political campaigns often have significant influence over the direction of governance. It is no longer sufficient to merely lament the dominance of political patrons who wield their financial power to shape outcomes. Many emerging politicians are turning to crowdfunding as a means to finance their campaigns, yet the question remains: where will they secure the necessary funds to compete effectively? If we persist in our current approach, the political landscape will remain unchanged, and the same narratives will continue to prevail.
A single credible candidate has the potential to transform the political arena, and it is imperative to adopt a practical mindset to facilitate this change. Personally, I have consistently supported friends who have pursued political office, regardless of the outcome of their campaigns. Many of these individuals reach out to me for assistance, and I am selective in my support, choosing to invest in those whom I genuinely believe in. It is important to clarify that the funds I contribute come from my personal finances, not from any church resources. I make these contributions through bank transfers, which I believe is a transparent and responsible method of support, reflecting my commitment to their aspirations.
I have friends contesting elections in various regions, and when they approach me for assistance, I willingly provide financial support, whether it be 20,000 or 50,000. This is a reflection of my belief in their capabilities and the values they represent. I encourage others to follow suit, as collective action is necessary to elevate credible candidates into positions of power. By doing so, we can gradually disrupt the entrenched systems that have proven ineffective. While the journey may take a decade or two, the potential for meaningful change is within our reach. Let us unite in this endeavor, celebrating our shared commitment to fostering a political environment that truly serves the people.
