THE HONOUR CODE

The teachings encapsulated in “The Honour Code” over the next four to five weeks aim to deepen our understanding of the significance of honour in our relationship with God. This series is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their connection with the Divine, ensuring that their service and worship are pleasing to Him. It will explore the culture of honour within the Kingdom of God, emphasizing the blessings that accompany those who embody honour and show reverence to God. The title “The Honour Code” reflects the core focus of these teachings, which will also include discussions on biblical principles of financial stewardship, recognizing that stewardship is an integral aspect of discipleship.

In examining Malachi Chapter 1, particularly verse 6 from the New King James Version, we find a profound assertion regarding honour. The scripture states that a son honours his father and a servant his master, prompting a divine inquiry: if God is indeed our Father, where is the honour due to Him? This passage highlights the essential nature of honour in both father-son and master-servant relationships, underscoring that honour is a fundamental characteristic of these bonds. God’s demand for honour and reverence is clear; He seeks acknowledgment and respect from His people, reinforcing the idea that honour is not merely a concept but a vital expression of our relationship with Him.

In the context of divine relationships, it is emphasized that if God is indeed our Father, then it is incumbent upon us to honor Him. Similarly, if He is our Master, He rightfully expects reverence from us. These concepts of honor and reverence are not inherently natural to human behavior, particularly as we navigate our daily lives. It is not typical for individuals to extend honor and respect to everyone they encounter. However, God, due to the unique and profound relationship He has established with humanity, mandates that these two elements—honor and reverence—be integral to our interactions with Him. This principle is articulated in the New Testament, specifically in Matthew 22:37, where Jesus instructs His followers to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind, identifying this as the foremost commandment. The second commandment, which parallels the first, is to love one’s neighbor as oneself, highlighting the importance of both divine and interpersonal relationships.

The inquiry posed to Jesus regarding the greatest commandment reveals the significance of love as a foundational aspect of our relationship with God. Jesus underscores that the greatest commandment is one that calls for a deep, unwavering love for God, which is expressed through honor and reverence. This love is not merely an emotional sentiment but is demonstrated through our actions and attitudes towards God. One might question the rationale behind honoring God, and the answer lies in His omnipotence and sovereignty. As stated in Jeremiah 32:27, God proclaims, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there anything too hard for me to do?” Such a declaration from the Almighty, who governs all creation, certainly warrants our honor and respect. Recognizing His supreme authority and capability should inspire a profound sense of reverence within us, compelling us to acknowledge His greatness in our lives.

It is essential to express gratitude and reverence towards a being of such profound significance, one who embodies divinity itself. The scripture from Hebrews 12:9 in the New King James Version emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our earthly fathers, who discipline us and earn our respect. The author poses a compelling question regarding our relationship with the Father of spirits, urging us to consider the necessity of submitting to the Creator of all existence. This divine entity, who sustains everything through His powerful word, undoubtedly merits our utmost respect and honor.

Furthermore, Psalm 24:1 reinforces the notion that the earth and everything within it belongs to the Lord, highlighting His sovereignty over all creation. The biblical narrative asserts that all things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing exists. This profound truth underscores the significance of worshiping and honoring the one who is not only the creator but also the sustainer of life. As we gather in this service, it is imperative to recognize the importance of living a life that reflects our reverence for God, who is not merely a paternal figure but the ultimate authority and source of all that is.

The essence of the discussion revolves around the imperative to honor a higher power, whether referred to as God the Father or Godfather, emphasizing that such a being is deserving of our respect and reverence. The term “honor” itself is multifaceted, encompassing the notions of high esteem, regard, and respect. It is important to recognize that the concept of honor is deeply rooted in cultural contexts, varying significantly across different societies and professions. For instance, within the legal field, a judge is addressed as “My Lord,” reflecting the respect accorded to their position. Similarly, in ecclesiastical settings, titles such as “His Grace” are employed to denote respect for bishops and archbishops, illustrating the diverse ways in which honor is expressed across various domains.

In monarchies, honor is conveyed through specific titles, such as “Her Majesty” for the Queen of England, or “His Royal Majesty” in various African cultures, including Nigeria. These titles serve to acknowledge the elevated status of individuals in positions of authority. Furthermore, in legislative contexts, elected officials are often referred to as “Honorable,” a title that signifies respect for their role in governance. Across different cultures, honor manifests in various forms, whether through professional titles like “Doctor” in academia or through traditional designations such as “Chief” in community settings. This rich tapestry of honor underscores the importance of recognizing and respecting those in positions of influence, while also prompting reflection on the reverence owed to the Creator of all.

In various professional and academic contexts, individuals are often recognized by their titles, such as professors and doctors, which reflect their achievements and the respect they command. These titles serve as markers of honor, showcasing the experiences and knowledge that individuals have accumulated throughout their careers. However, it is essential to recognize that when engaging with the divine, particularly in the context of grace and liberty, there is a tendency to overlook the profound significance of honoring God. This oversight can lead to a failure to appreciate the blessings and goodness that come from a relationship with the divine, which is a stark contrast to the respect we are expected to show to our fellow human beings. The message here emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the divine as the ultimate source of all good things, deserving of our utmost honor and reverence.

The concept of honor is deeply rooted in cultural practices, particularly in various African traditions. For instance, in many African cultures, it is customary to show respect to elders by prostrating oneself, a gesture that signifies honor rather than servitude. This practice, which may resemble a form of physical exercise, is a cultural expression of respect that has been instilled from a young age. In contrast, other cultures may express honor through different gestures, such as handshakes or cheek kisses, each reflecting the values and traditions of that society. The diversity in how honor is demonstrated across cultures highlights the universal importance of respect and recognition, reminding us that honoring others, regardless of their status, is a fundamental aspect of human interaction.

When engaging in discussions with my daughters, who reside with me in Africa, I strive to impart an understanding of the rich cultural nuances that define our continent. It is essential for them to grasp how these cultural elements influence perceptions of honor, both in relation to oneself and in the context of honoring others. Across the globe, every culture possesses unique methods of expressing honor, and this principle extends into the realm of the Kingdom of God. Within this divine kingdom, there exists a distinct culture that emphasizes the importance of honor, which can be manifested in various ways.

One significant aspect of demonstrating honor in God’s Kingdom is through accountability.

The parable of the talents, as recounted in Matthew 25, illustrates this concept vividly. In the narrative, upon the master’s return, he requires an account of the servants’ stewardship, prompting reflection on whether one lives in a manner that honors God through accountability. This includes being responsible for all that has been entrusted to us, including our very lives. Additionally, obedience plays a crucial role in honoring God, as exemplified by Abraham’s prompt response to God’s call in Genesis 12. His immediate departure signifies a profound act of obedience that honors the divine. Furthermore, cultivating a spirit of gratitude is another vital expression of honor within the Kingdom of God, reinforcing the importance of recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us.

Gratitude is an essential expression of appreciation for the blessings and actions bestowed upon us, particularly in our relationship with the divine. It is through acts of praise, often infused with joy and humor, that we convey our thankfulness. As we approach the month of May, it is crucial to recognize that honoring God through our gratitude is a fundamental expectation. If you have found yourself in a cycle of complaints, now is the moment to abandon those grievances and excuses that hinder your ability to express gratitude. Failing to do so can be seen as a lack of honor, as true appreciation should flow freely from our hearts and manifest in our actions. This is why praise should continually emanate from Zion, the house of God, as it reflects our commitment to honoring Him.

Worship, which is a profound form of reverence, serves as a vital avenue for demonstrating our gratitude. Whether in solitude at home or in a communal gathering, worship must originate from a sincere place within us. It is insufficient to merely acknowledge God’s greatness while remaining passive; genuine worship requires active participation of our entire being—our hands, bodies, minds, and emotions must engage in this sacred connection. This engagement is part of the honor code within the kingdom of God. It is imperative to reassess and transform any attitudes that have long been ingrained, as the relationship between a father and son, or a master and servant, is built on mutual respect and reverence. As we embark on this teaching series, we will explore themes of accountability, obedience, gratitude, worship, and reverence, all of which are integral to deepening our connection with the divine.

Reverence is a fundamental aspect of worship, reflecting our attitude when we enter into the presence of the divine, whether in a communal setting or in solitude. It is essential to conduct ourselves appropriately during worship, as our demeanor can significantly impact both our experience and that of others. For instance, engaging in activities such as chewing gum while participating in public worship may not inherently be wrong, but it can serve as a distraction, diverting attention away from the sacredness of the moment. When we approach God, it is vital to present ourselves in a manner that is respectful and conducive to meaningful communication. This includes being mindful of our physical state and ensuring that we are prepared to engage fully, both in body and spirit.

Moreover, the distractions of modern life, such as social media and mobile devices, can further detract from our worship experience. It is not uncommon for individuals to find themselves scrolling through Instagram or watching videos during an online service, which raises questions about the sincerity of their reverence. Even in private prayer, interruptions from phone calls or messages can disrupt our connection with God, suggesting a lack of commitment to the relationship we seek to cultivate. True reverence requires us to prioritize our communication with the divine, setting aside distractions and fully engaging in the moment. This commitment to honoring God in both public and private settings is crucial for fostering a deeper and more meaningful spiritual connection.

Generosity serves as a profound expression of our reverence and respect for God. When we extend our generosity towards God and those in need, we are actively honoring Him. This act of giving is not merely a transaction; it is a reflection of our commitment to uphold God’s values in our lives. Furthermore, it is essential to recognize that honoring God encompasses the stewardship of the gifts He has bestowed upon us, including our time, resources, and talents. Each individual is endowed with unique abilities and opportunities, and it is our responsibility to utilize these gifts in a manner that glorifies God. In this discourse, we will explore the significance of honoring God through these three vital areas.

As we reflect on the theme of honoring God, particularly in the context of our challenges and the gifts we possess, it is crucial to understand the binary nature of honor within the kingdom’s framework. There exists no neutral position; one either honors God through their actions or dishonors Him. The condition of our hearts serves as a critical measure of our honor towards God, as He continually observes our inner motivations. When our hearts begin to drift away from God, our capacity to honor Him diminishes correspondingly. Therefore, it is imperative to cultivate a heart aligned with God’s will, ensuring that our actions consistently reflect our commitment to honor Him in all aspects of our lives.

The significance of divine matters may diminish in one’s life, akin to the feelings that arise when one is at odds with another individual. This disconnection often manifests as a reluctance to engage, whether it be ignoring phone calls or deliberately avoiding conversation, stemming from a lack of desire to show respect. Such behavior can similarly extend to one’s relationship with God, where a conscious or subconscious decision to disregard Him may lead to a perceived dishonor. The author of the book of Romans elucidates this concept, emphasizing that the root of dishonor towards God often begins with neglecting to keep Him present in our thoughts and hearts.

In the biblical narrative found in Genesis, the contrasting offerings of Cain and Abel serve as a poignant illustration of this principle. Cain presented an offering derived from his agricultural produce, while Abel offered the finest of his livestock. The scripture indicates that God favored Abel’s offering, but did not accept Cain’s, suggesting that the quality of their gifts reflected their respective attitudes and reverence towards God. This rejection implies that one’s relationship with God is intrinsically linked to both the heart behind the offering and the offering itself. It is crucial to recognize that our approach to God and the sincerity of our offerings are intertwined, as they reveal the true state of our honor and commitment to Him.

It is imperative to cease making excuses such as “I didn’t know” or “I had no other choice.” Instead, one must cultivate a deeper relationship with God and learn to honor Him through one’s life choices and interactions. This commitment to honoring God is essential for reaping the full benefits of this divine relationship. The biblical account of Cain illustrates this point vividly; after God expressed disapproval of Cain’s offering, Cain succumbed to anger and sulked. In response, God questioned Cain’s behavior, emphasizing that if he acted righteously, he would be accepted. However, God also warned that failure to do so would leave him vulnerable to sin, which lies in wait, eager to ensnare him. This narrative underscores the importance of approaching God with sincerity and respect, as demonstrated by Abel, who offered the best of his flock, while Cain merely presented a lackluster offering.

Furthermore, it is crucial to recognize that one’s professional life is intrinsically linked to one’s spiritual life.

As we commemorate Workers’ Day globally, it is vital to understand that the value we provide in our workplaces is not solely a contractual obligation but also a reflection of our commitment to God. By performing our duties with excellence, we honor not only our employers but also the divine gifts bestowed upon us. Therefore, it is essential to manage our talents in a manner that glorifies God. The question arises: how are you stewarding your talents? This reflection is not merely an exercise in self-assessment but a call to action, urging individuals to align their professional endeavors with their spiritual values, thereby ensuring that every aspect of their lives is a testament to their faith.

It is acknowledged that some individuals may have been unemployed for an extended period. As we conclude this service, we will offer prayers for you, trusting that our God will elevate your circumstances significantly in this season, in the name of Jesus. However, it is crucial to recognize that merely existing day by day without actively utilizing your potential does not honor God. Every action you take—whether at work, at home, in your business, or along your career path—is interconnected with your Christian life. These aspects are not separate; rather, they collectively form an integral part of your Christian experience. Praise be to Jesus.

According to 1 Peter 4:10, as rendered in the Amplified Translation, each individual has received unique gifts, talents, and abilities graciously bestowed by God. The scripture encourages us to employ these gifts in service to one another, reflecting good stewardship of God’s manifold grace. This passage emphasizes the importance of utilizing your talents effectively, as they are not solely for personal advancement but are intended for the betterment of humanity and the promotion of God’s kingdom. It is, therefore, a disservice to God when one neglects to develop their gifts. The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-29 illustrates this point, where the servant who failed to utilize his talent was deemed wicked and unprofitable. May this not be your story; instead, in this season, may your efforts be fruitful, your work be blessed, and may you bring glory to God and His kingdom through your endeavors.

It is imperative to recognize that one should not bring shame upon the kingdom of God, and in the esteemed name of Jesus, let us affirm this truth with a resounding amen. It is unfortunate that some individuals tend to undervalue their own talents by engaging in comparisons with the abilities of others. However, it is essential to understand that one’s worth is not determined by the talents possessed by others; rather, each person will be held accountable solely for what God has entrusted to them. I would much prefer to be a person with a single talent who diligently cultivates that gift than to envy someone who possesses five talents and is thriving. It is crucial to celebrate the unique gifts bestowed upon us by God, much like David, who, armed only with a sling, triumphed over Goliath, or Moses, who wielded a simple rod that ultimately vanquished the sorcery of the magicians in Egypt.

As you navigate your professional journey, I pray that divine grace will elevate you to a position of leadership rather than subservience. The gifts you possess have the potential to confound the forces of darkness and malevolent powers in the environment where God has placed you. It is vital to cultivate a belief in the abilities that God has granted you, as the fulfillment of His purpose for your life is not contingent upon the pace of others’ achievements. It is unwise to measure your own progress against that of another. Many individuals remain unaware of the gifts they hold, and I would like to emphasize that there are three levels of awareness regarding the talents bestowed upon us. For those who feel uncertain about their gifts, I pray that this season will bring forth divine revelations, allowing you to recognize and embrace the grace that resides within you, as God sends individuals to illuminate your path in the name of the Lord Jesus.

There are individuals who express the belief that they can recognize their inherent talents, yet they find themselves not fully utilizing these gifts. This season is one in which divine assistance is sought to enhance and optimize the abilities that have been bestowed upon each individual. In the esteemed name of Jesus, I extend my prayers to those who have yet to fully harness the grace and gifts that God has placed in their lives. May the Almighty provide you with new avenues for expression and collaboration, enabling you to synergize effectively and maximize your potential. I pray that you will encounter individuals who will support and position you in such a way that your light may shine brightly, allowing your talents to serve as a blessing to countless others.

Furthermore, there exists a group of individuals who assert that they are effectively utilizing their gifts. While not everyone may be able to make this claim, for those who are, I pray that divine grace will multiply in your endeavors, empowering you to deploy your gifts even more appropriately. As you navigate the coming days of this year, may your light shine increasingly brighter, undiminished in any aspect of your life, whether at work or at home. Everything you undertake will prosper under God’s guidance, as affirmed in the precious name of the Lord Jesus. It is essential to recognize that your work should reflect positively on the Kingdom of God; your productivity is a form of worship that honors Him. The integration of your vocational life with your Christian faith is vital, as emphasized in the scriptures, which remind us to approach our work with sincerity and reverence, serving not merely for the approval of others but with a genuine heart that fears God.

It is possible that someone is currently listening to my words, perhaps while in the company of a supervisor or a partner who exhibits a stern demeanor. The Scriptures instruct us to perform our duties as if we are serving God Himself, as this is the only manner in which our character can effectively influence those around us. It is essential to reflect on how we are utilizing the gifts bestowed upon us by God; we must strive to honor Him with our talents and all that we possess. By doing so, when we eventually stand before God, we will be able to hear the commendation, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, and much more will be entrusted to you.” This affirmation will serve as your testimony in the precious name of the Lord Jesus. We appreciate your attention and sincerely hope you find inspiration in these words.
