THE ROAR OF THE LION
In the thirteenth chapter of Judges, the narrative begins with a somber reflection on the moral state of the Israelites, who once again acted wickedly in the eyes of the Lord. As a consequence of their transgressions, the Lord allowed them to fall into the hands of the Philistines for a period of forty years. Within this context, we are introduced to a man named Manoah, hailing from Zorah and belonging to the Danite tribe. His wife, however, was unable to bear children. In a remarkable turn of events, the angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife, announcing that despite her barrenness, she would conceive and give birth to a son. This revelation marked the beginning of a series of divine encounters, as the angel provided specific instructions regarding the child’s upbringing, emphasizing that he would be a Nazirite dedicated to God from birth, which entailed a life of consecration and separation from certain worldly practices.
As the story unfolds, Manoah’s wife relayed the angel’s message to him, prompting Manoah to seek further guidance from the Lord. He earnestly prayed, requesting that the divine messenger return to provide additional instructions on how to raise the child destined for greatness. The Bible recounts that God heard Manoah’s plea, and the angel reappeared, reaffirming the directives given previously. This interaction not only highlights the significance of obedience to divine commandments but also underscores the importance of prayer and seeking wisdom in the face of uncertainty. The narrative sets the stage for the extraordinary life that the child, later known as Samson, would lead, marked by divine purpose and the challenges that would accompany his unique calling.
The angel of the Lord visited the woman once more while she was seated in the field, but her husband Manoah was absent at that moment. In her excitement, she hurried to inform her husband, exclaiming that the man who had previously come to her had returned. When Manoah arrived, he engaged in conversation with the angel, who instructed them to offer a sacrifice to God. Suddenly, fire descended upon the offering, and the angel ascended to heaven. Manoah, overwhelmed by the experience, expressed his fear to his wife, believing they had encountered God and were destined to perish. However, his wife reassured him, arguing that if God intended to harm them, He would not have accepted their sacrifice.
This dramatic encounter foreshadowed the birth of a child with a significant destiny, namely Samson. The narrative of Samson serves as a reminder that, similar to the prophetic word that preceded his birth, each individual has a divine purpose, even if it has not been explicitly foretold. The scriptures affirm that no prophecy is subject to personal interpretation; rather, they are inspired by the Holy Spirit. In this context, we can find assurance in Jeremiah 29:11, which declares that God has plans for us, plans filled with hope and a promising future.
It is essential for us to recognize and embrace the divine orchestration of our lives, understanding that these plans are extraordinary.
This morning, I encourage you to seek a deeper awareness of God’s intentions for your life, ensuring that you do not overlook the remarkable journey that lies ahead.
The scripture in Ephesians chapter 9, verse 11, conveys a profound truth: the race is not necessarily won by the swift, nor is victory guaranteed to the strong. Wisdom does not always lead to triumph, as the passage emphasizes that time and chance are factors that affect everyone. It is God who orchestrates these elements of time and chance, and often, we may misinterpret the events that unfold in our lives. Such misinterpretations can lead to missed opportunities or critical moments. It is my hope that as we navigate the second half of this year, divine guidance will preserve your path, ensuring that you do not overlook the significant times and chances that come your way.
In the narrative found in Judges 13, verse 24, we learn that a woman gave birth to a son named Samson, who was destined for a significant purpose: to confront the Philistines. The child grew, blessed by the Lord, and the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him in Mahaneh Dan, a location significant to his heritage as a Danite. This movement of the Spirit was a precursor to the extraordinary events that would define Samson’s life. Unlike the Old Testament, where the Spirit would come upon individuals temporarily, in the New Testament, believers experience the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This means that the Spirit is not merely a visitor but a constant presence within us, empowering and guiding our lives. If you have not yet experienced this infilling of the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to seek it earnestly, for it is through this relationship that we truly understand the depth of divine presence in our lives.
In the era of Samson, as depicted in the Acts of the Apostles, particularly in chapter 4, verse 8, we find a significant moment involving Peter. The scripture notes that Peter, empowered by the Holy Spirit, addressed the rulers and elders of Israel with remarkable confidence. He posed a critical question regarding the miraculous healing of a man, emphasizing the good deed that had been done. Despite being described as an uneducated and ordinary individual, Peter’s boldness stemmed from his spiritual empowerment, illustrating how the presence of the Holy Spirit can transform one’s demeanor and courage in the face of authority. This transformation mirrors the experience of Samson, who, although initially bewildered by the Spirit’s influence, ultimately became a vessel for divine purpose.
As the narrative unfolds, we see Samson’s journey taking him to Timnah, where he encounters a Philistine woman whom he desires to marry. His request to his parents reveals a significant cultural tension, as they question his choice to seek a spouse from among the uncircumcised Philistines rather than from his own people. Samson’s insistence on marrying this woman, stating that she pleases him, underscores a pivotal moment in his life, driven by personal desire rather than adherence to societal norms. This episode not only highlights Samson’s character but also serves as a reminder of the complexities that arise when divine purpose intersects with human choices, illustrating the profound impact of the Spirit’s movement in shaping destinies.
In examining verse 4, it becomes evident that Samson’s parents were unaware that his actions were orchestrated by the Lord, who intended to create an opportunity for Samson to confront the Philistines. At that time, the Philistines held significant power over Israel, and Samson’s life purpose was intrinsically linked to challenging their dominance. This context sheds light on his growing attraction to a Philistine woman, which puzzled his parents, who questioned his choice to marry someone from a group they viewed as adversaries. However, God’s plan was to use Samson’s entanglement with the Philistines as a means to instigate conflict and ultimately liberate Israel from their oppression.
As the narrative unfolds in verse 5, Samson, accompanied by his parents, travels to Timnah and encounters a young lion that roars at him. In a moment of divine empowerment, the Spirit of the Lord descends upon him, enabling him to defeat the lion with his bare hands, an act he chooses not to disclose to his parents. This incident serves as a metaphor for the struggles we face in life, prompting reflection on what we are either fleeing from or pursuing. Each individual grapples with their own “lion,” representing fears, failures, or challenges. The discussion of acceleration invites us to consider the direction of our pursuitsâwhether we are escaping from past pains or striving toward future achievements and divine purposes.
It is not uncommon for individuals to pursue paths that appear promising yet lack divine endorsement. One must exercise caution regarding the direction in which they are heading, whether it be fleeing from certain circumstances or gravitating towards others. Often, the very challenges one seeks to escape may actually be the opportunities that warrant pursuit. Consider the biblical figure of Samson, who, upon awakening one day, faced the unprecedented challenge of confronting a lion. There was no prior indication that he possessed the strength to overcome such a formidable foe. However, the overarching narrative of his life reveals that God had a distinct purpose for him, a plan that had been communicated to his parents even before his birth. This illustrates the profound truth that divine intentions may unfold in ways that are not immediately apparent to us.
A parallel can be drawn with the story of David, who was chosen to be the next king of Israel while tending to his father’s sheep. God had already begun to communicate with the prophet Samuel, instructing him to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as Saul’s successor. When Samuel arrived at Jesse’s household, he had to wait for David, who was preoccupied with his humble duties. Upon his arrival, despite the odor of sheep clinging to him, Samuel anointed David. However, it is crucial to note that David did not ascend to the throne immediately following this anointing. Instead, he returned to his pastoral responsibilities, illustrating that the realization of divine plans often unfolds gradually and may not align with our expectations. Some individuals, upon receiving prophetic declarations, may anticipate swift changes in their circumstances, yet the journey toward fulfilling God’s purpose can be a more intricate process than they envision.
Today, I will be sharing insights regarding the nature of divine activation, and I urge you to remain attuned to a crucial aspect of this process. Often, the manifestation of divine purpose unfolds in ways that may not align with our expectations. For instance, consider the story of David, who returned to the humble task of tending his father’s sheep in obscurity. However, as the narrative progresses, we learn that an evil spirit began to torment King Saul the moment David received his anointing. This divine intervention necessitated the search for someone who could skillfully play the harp to soothe the troubled king. Remarkably, the only individual who fit this requirement was David, the very one who had been quietly honing his musical talents in the wilderness, demonstrating obedience and diligence in his responsibilities. His introduction to the royal court was not as a future king but as a gifted musician, illustrating how divine activation can manifest in unexpected ways.
Similarly, the story of Samson provides another compelling example of divine calling and activation. Samson felt an undeniable pull towards the Philistines and expressed his desire to marry a woman from Timnah, prompting his parents to accompany him. Upon their arrival, an unexpected challenge arose when a lion suddenly confronted Samson. This encounter was significant, as it marked the first instance where Samson would demonstrate the extraordinary power bestowed upon him by God. Prior to this moment, he had not engaged in any feats that would suggest he possessed the ability to confront such a formidable creature. This pivotal event not only highlights the sudden nature of divine empowerment but also serves as a reminder that the journey towards fulfilling one’s divine purpose often begins with unforeseen challenges that reveal one’s true potential.
The lion’s roar marked a pivotal moment, as it presented an opportunity for Samson to confront his fears rather than flee from them. Many individuals, both present and those tuning in online, have been evading their challenges for far too long. Often, what they are escaping is not merely a source of discomfort but rather a divine call to fulfill God’s original purpose for their lives. The unexpected confrontation with the lion revealed Samson’s hidden strength; the beast had miscalculated by roaring at someone destined for greatness. It is essential to reflect on this notion: what is your personal lion? What are the obstacles you are avoiding that may actually be the very catalysts for your destiny?
In life, the way we perceive our challenges can significantly influence our outcomes.
While some may view their struggles as insurmountable problems, others might recognize them as opportunities for growth and transformation. Just as the young lion provoked Samson to awaken his dormant potential, so too can our own challenges compel us to rise to the occasion. Consider the story of David in 1 Samuel chapter 17, who, on a simple errand to deliver food, found himself facing Goliath at a moment when the giant had chosen the wrong adversary to intimidate. This illustrates that sometimes, the very situations we dread can lead us to our greatest victories if we choose to confront them with faith and resilience.
The biblical narrative indicates that Goliath would emerge each morning and evening to defy the God of Israel, particularly during the conflict in the valley of Elah. This confrontation was not a conventional battle where armies would clash directly; rather, it involved a champion from each side representing their respective nations. The Philistines had Goliath of Gath, whose formidable stature and presence are vividly described in 1 Samuel 17. The sight of such a daunting adversary instilled fear in the hearts of the Israelites, causing despair among them. However, the arrival of David marked a pivotal moment; while many were overwhelmed by fear, David’s spirit was ignited. His inherent qualities, deeply embedded in his being, began to awaken, suggesting that there is potential within each individual that can be stirred to confront challenges.
In this context, it is essential to recognize that the obstacles we face can serve as catalysts for our destiny. The roar of the lion, which may symbolize our fears or adversities, should not compel us to retreat but rather inspire us to advance toward our purpose. This notion is echoed in James 1:2-4, which encourages believers to embrace trials as opportunities for growth, as they cultivate patience and lead to spiritual maturity. During a recent discussion at Accelerate, the theme of joy in the face of adversity was highlighted, with Pastor Poju recounting a testimony of his sister who, despite feeling uneasy in a taxi that ultimately led to her kidnapping, chose to maintain her composure. This illustrates the power of perspective; by choosing to respond with joy rather than fear, one can transform a dire situation into a testimony of faith and resilience.
He possessed a shield carrier, which was the object of his focus as he observed David’s approach. David recounted his experiences, stating that when the lion roared at him in a desolate area, he did not flee. He explained that both the lion and the bear had confronted him, and it is noteworthy that in 1 Samuel 17, King Saul summoned David for an interview prior to his descent into the valley to confront Goliath. This meeting resembled a job interview, where Saul sought to ascertain David’s qualifications for the daunting task ahead. David, however, refrained from disclosing that the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul and that the prophet Samuel had anointed him. He likely contemplated the implications of his anointing, understanding that he had assumed the mantle of leadership that once belonged to Saul.
Saul, enveloped in ignorance regarding the divine shift that had occurred, attempted to equip David with his armor, which David instinctively rejected, perhaps thinking, “I do not wish to venture where God has withdrawn His presence.” In response to Saul’s inquiries, David recounted his past experiences as a shepherd, detailing how he pursued a lion or a bear that had taken a lamb from his flock. He emphasized his determination, stating, “I went out after it,” challenging the notion of retreat in the face of danger. This moment of confrontation with the lion and the bear was crucial; had David chosen to flee, he might have lacked the courage to face Goliath, ultimately jeopardizing his destiny. It is within the realm of seemingly mundane tasks and responsibilities that the activation of one’s purpose often occurs, highlighting the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
It is essential to recognize that the challenges we face should not be dismissed as trivial or insignificant.
If we refrain from trivializing the situation and instead approach it with sensitivity, we can begin to address the issues at hand. This morning, I spoke with an individual who is enduring harassment and threats from another person. In the name of Jesus, I declare that you will receive the courage necessary to confront this individual and assert your rightful place, as determined by your destiny. You will no longer feel compelled to retreat. As David proclaimed, he was not accustomed to fleeing from challenges. Despite the formidable presence of Goliath, he trusted in the same God who had delivered him from the lion and the bear. David’s confidence stemmed from his past victories, and he boldly declared that this Philistine would meet the same fate, having defied the armies of the living God.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy to consider the response of King Saul, who, in a moment of desperation, instructed David to confront their national crisis. This reflects a significant turning point, as it indicates a lack of faith in Saul himself, who chose to send a young boy to face a giant rather than taking action himself. Perhaps it is time for the leaders of Nigeria to recognize the potential within the younger generation, allowing them the opportunity to rise and tackle the pressing issues facing the nation. There is a unique grace bestowed upon our generation to address and resolve the challenges that confront us. Let us unite in faith and declare that every Saul, representing outdated leadership, must step aside to make way for the Davids of Nigeria, empowering them to lead with divine guidance and purpose.
It is possible to declare, through the spirit of God this morning, that every individual akin to Saul, who is holding our nation hostage, and every such figure that is imposing constraints upon your lifeâquestioning your intentions, doubting the anointing bestowed upon you, and scrutinizing the grace you embodyâwill see their influence come to an end in the name of the Lord Jesus. Every voice that contradicts the divine purpose for your life and every adversary that has been a source of fear will be silenced. I declare that you shall receive the courage to confront these challenges, to seize control of your circumstances, and to no longer retreat in fear. In the name of the Lord Jesus, I impart to you the boldness to engage and the strength to prevail, as you are destined to move forward without hesitation. May you be endowed with grace for divine acceleration, propelling you toward your true purpose and guiding you along the path of your destiny.

Although I may not know your identity, the spirit reveals that you should cease your retreat from this academic pursuit, as it is intrinsically linked to your destiny. I release divine grace upon you today; as you pursue this goal, you will find renewed strength and opportunities will manifest before you in the name of the Lord Jesus. Your needs will be met in extraordinary ways, and you will emerge victorious in this endeavor. Additionally, I have a word for another individual concerning financial matters related to a business. God has assured that you will receive favor akin to the Passover, where you will be granted the resources you require without rejection. I prophesy that every necessary provision for the successful realization of the business idea entrusted to you will be made available, as God knows your needs and is prepared to fulfill them.
