THE WORKINGS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians chapter 5, beginning at verse 14, presents a profound message, particularly as rendered in the Amplified Classic version. The text states, “Therefore He says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.” This passage emphasizes the importance of living with intention and purpose. It urges individuals to conduct their lives with wisdom and discernment, contrasting the behavior of the unwise with that of those who are sensible and intelligent. The exhortation to “make the very most of the time” and to seize opportunities reflects a divine desire for believers to cultivate meaningful and impactful lives. The Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, addresses the church in Ephesus, and by extension, all congregations, including those in Lagos and beyond, encouraging them to embrace a life of purpose and clarity.

Furthermore, the scripture warns against living in a state of vagueness or thoughtlessness, as articulated in verse 17. The call to avoid ambiguity is crucial, as it highlights the necessity of being specific and intentional in one’s life journey. Many individuals, even within spiritual communities, may respond to inquiries about their well-being with vague affirmations, such as “It is well,” without addressing underlying issues that require attention. This lack of specificity can hinder the engagement of the Holy Spirit’s power and the support of fellow believers. The Bible underscores the importance of seeking counsel, stating that “in the multitude of counsel, there is safety.” It is essential for individuals to recognize that they do not have to navigate life’s challenges in isolation; rather, they should be open to seeking guidance and support from others, especially during times of difficulty.

It is essential to maintain a level of discretion regarding personal struggles, as it is often unwise for others to be privy to our internal battles. There are instances when individuals, despite inquiries about their well-being, respond with reassurances such as “don’t worry, everything will be fine.” This response can be perplexing, as it may indicate a desire to dismiss genuine concerns. In moments of prayer, a single word or revelation can profoundly impact one’s understanding, as the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in transforming the written word of God into a living, spoken truth within our hearts. Engaging with scripture alongside the Holy Spirit allows for a deeper comprehension of God’s will, guiding us through challenging times. It is imperative to seek clarity and wisdom, as the Bible encourages us to avoid being thoughtless or foolish, but rather to strive for understanding and discernment in our lives.

When individuals find themselves in turmoil, they may resort to various substances as a means of escape. The scripture warns against the dangers of excessive indulgence, particularly in the context of alcohol, which can lead to debauchery—a term that signifies an overindulgence in sensual pleasures. This behavior often serves as a temporary solution to overwhelming emotions, such as anger or frustration. For instance, one might seek solace in substances to numb feelings of rage or to cope with the pressures of work deadlines. Such actions, while providing momentary relief, ultimately distract from addressing the underlying issues. It is crucial to recognize these tendencies and instead seek fulfillment and peace through a deeper connection with God and His word, rather than through fleeting distractions that may lead to further complications.

In moments of distress, individuals often resort to temporary distractions, such as consuming alcohol, in an attempt to escape their problems. However, this approach is not sustainable, as it merely postpones the inevitable return to one’s difficulties. The Bible emphasizes that such a lifestyle is not conducive to true fulfillment. Instead, it highlights the presence of a divine helper, appointed by God and sent through Jesus Christ, whose purpose is to guide individuals in navigating their singular life in a manner that is both meaningful and successful. Engaging with this divine assistance can lead to significant positive transformations aligned with God’s will.

To maintain a consistent connection with the Holy Spirit, the Bible instructs believers to engage in uplifting practices, such as sharing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, thereby fostering an atmosphere of praise and gratitude. Many individuals, however, find themselves caught in a cycle of entertainment, dedicating their time to binge-watching series that provide momentary amusement but fail to instigate any real change in their lives. This contrast between mere amusement and genuine transformation is stark; one can spend an entire weekend engrossed in entertainment, only to return to the same stress and uncertainty on Monday morning. In contrast, when one consciously chooses to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, they can experience tangible improvements in their circumstances, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful existence.

It is often emphasized that one should express praise through vocalization, musical instruments, and heartfelt melodies directed towards the Lord at all times, offering gratitude for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. This practice is highlighted in Ephesians 5:21, which serves as a reminder that a consistent filling of the Holy Spirit is assured through mutual submission among believers, done out of reverence for Christ. Many may not realize that living a spirit-filled life involves a commitment to being subject to one another. The passage further elaborates on this concept by addressing the roles within marriage, specifically in Ephesians 5:22, where wives are instructed to submit to their husbands as they would to Christ, followed by the exhortation in verses 23-24 for husbands to love their wives.

The underlying truth is that without mutual submission, it becomes challenging to live in the Spirit and experience the continuous infilling of the Holy Ghost.

When individuals are overly focused on their own desires and fleshly inclinations, they may struggle to yield to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This is particularly relevant for those who may be experiencing disconnection in their relationships, such as married couples who are not communicating effectively. Some may adopt a solitary approach to their spiritual journey, akin to a Bluetooth device that can only connect to one device at a time. However, the Bible clearly states the importance of mutual submission, indicating that the enjoyment of divine presence relies on various factors, including this principle of submission. Husbands are called to love their wives genuinely; thus, one cannot expect to experience the power of the Holy Spirit while neglecting the call to love and submit within their relationships.

The challenges individuals face often stem from a disconnection from divinely appointed sources of support and guidance, as well as from those to whom we are meant to submit. It is essential to recognize that God desires to empower each of us, and we should encourage one another in this pursuit. When we embrace this truth, we open ourselves to the transformative influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. A life characterized by a yearning for the Holy Spirit, a willingness to submit to one another, and a practice of gratitude fosters an environment where the presence of God becomes palpable. As we cultivate this awareness, we begin to witness the manifestations of the Holy Spirit in our daily experiences.

It is crucial to understand that the workings of the Holy Spirit are accessible to believers in every facet of life, regardless of their circumstances. The Scriptures affirm that the manifestation of the Spirit is bestowed upon each individual for the collective benefit of all. This divine presence empowers us to address challenges in various areas, including our personal and professional lives. The Holy Spirit is ever-active and does not tire or take breaks; rather, it is we who may inadvertently hinder its influence by allowing distractions to overwhelm us. Therefore, it is advisable to consciously seek peace and rest, particularly when faced with anxiety. By intentionally casting our burdens upon the Holy Spirit, we can experience a profound sense of relief and empowerment, allowing divine guidance to take precedence in our lives.

It is akin to carrying multiple burdens, perhaps four or five items, while struggling under their weight. When someone offers assistance, the instinctive response may be to decline, driven by the belief that if one does not visibly struggle, others will not recognize their efforts. This mindset reflects a broader attitude where individuals feel compelled to demonstrate their hardships, particularly in a bustling environment like Lagos. The notion persists that if one does not visibly endure the challenges of life, such as the complexities of marriage, their struggles may go unnoticed. However, the Holy Spirit encourages a different approach, urging individuals to relinquish their burdens and trust in divine support. The scripture reminds us to cast our cares upon Him, for He genuinely cares for us and desires to lighten our load.

Many individuals experience persistent stress and anxiety, often manifesting as physical symptoms like headaches, stemming from excessive worry and overthinking, particularly regarding financial matters. The relentless focus on money can lead to a state where even dreams are consumed by thoughts of wealth, yet the reality upon waking starkly contrasts with these visions. Recognizing the futility of this cycle is crucial; instead of being consumed by financial concerns, one should consciously cultivate joy, contentment, and peace. This practice not only aligns with a righteous life but also invites the presence of God into daily existence. As one embraces this mindset, the workings of the Holy Spirit become more apparent. It is my prayer that this week, individuals will witness the hand of God at work and engage meaningfully with the Holy Spirit, experiencing His transformative power in their lives.

The Holy Spirit plays a significant role in both our individual lives and our collective experiences. Contrary to the belief that one must attend church to feel the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, it is entirely possible to encounter this divine influence in the comfort of one’s own home. Whether one is in the living room, the kitchen, or even the bathroom, the Holy Spirit can bring about profound revelations that transform sorrow into joy. For instance, while preparing a meal, an individual may suddenly experience an overwhelming sense of joy, prompting laughter and a realization that everything will ultimately be alright. This personal encounter with the Holy Spirit can ignite a deep understanding that challenges such as barrenness are not permanent, leading to a newfound confidence in the promises of God.

Furthermore, the benefits of having the Holy Spirit actively working in one’s life are manifold. The Holy Spirit imparts wisdom and knowledge essential for effective living, guiding individuals toward their purpose and destiny. For those who find themselves at a crossroads, seeking clarity on God’s plan, it is crucial to invite the Holy Spirit into the decision-making process. The biblical account of Ananias in Acts chapter 9 illustrates this beautifully; he received specific instructions from the Holy Spirit in a vision, demonstrating how divine guidance can lead to significant actions. Ananias’s readiness to respond to the Lord’s call exemplifies the importance of being attuned to the Holy Spirit’s direction, which can illuminate the path forward in any aspect of life.

It is akin to a divine directive, instructing one to rise and proceed to a specific location, such as Admiralty Street, which is situated in Lagos and Lekki Phase One. The instruction is to seek out a particular residence belonging to a man named Judas, who is associated with Saul of Tarsus. This individual is currently engaged in prayer. To summarize, God sent Ananias with precise instructions regarding Saul’s whereabouts, revealing that Saul had been divinely incapacitated and was now in a state of prayer. Ananias was tasked with the mission of praying for Saul, assuring him that his sight would be restored, as God was already working within Saul’s heart. This illustrates the specificity with which the Holy Spirit operates, guiding individuals to recognize pivotal moments and seasons in their lives.

It is crucial to remain attuned to these significant seasons, as failing to do so can lead to dire consequences, including health deterioration or untimely death. This disconnection can be likened to dressing inappropriately for the weather, such as wearing a light shirt in winter. Such misalignment with the seasons of life can leave one vulnerable to spiritual attacks. The Holy Spirit plays an essential role in helping individuals discern their current season, which may require a commitment to sowing seeds of righteousness, particularly during designated times such as the mid-year Accelerate season. The scripture from Isaiah 10:12 emphasizes the importance of breaking up fallow ground and seeking God earnestly. This season may demand a departure from spiritual apathy, necessitating a personal investment of time and effort to foster growth and renewal in one’s spiritual journey.

When one dedicates their focus and attention, there are moments when the Holy Spirit may prompt an individual to make a significant financial contribution, often referred to as “sowing a seed.” It is essential to recognize that amidst the various schemes and manipulations surrounding financial matters, this particular guidance is not part of such gimmicks. My insights stem from a profound spiritual experience that has shaped my life for many years. The principle that where one’s treasure lies, there also resides the heart, resonates deeply with me. I recall a pivotal moment in 2002, as I was preparing for my wedding, a time when I believed I had a substantial amount saved—approximately 75,000 naira. During a service at Daystar Christian Centre, the Holy Spirit began to communicate with me, urging me to clear my account and write a cheque to my pastor. Initially, I resisted this notion, questioning the wisdom of giving away my savings just before my wedding.

However, what I failed to understand at that moment was that the Holy Spirit was guiding me toward a deeper reliance on God, shifting my focus away from material concerns. I share this experience not as a directive for others to follow blindly, but rather as a personal testimony of faith. It is crucial to discern whether the Holy Spirit is speaking to you individually; otherwise, one may find themselves acting without divine guidance. After much contemplation, I ultimately decided to write that cheque, leaving only a nominal amount in my account. This act of faith profoundly impacted my spiritual journey, bringing me to a place of humility and dependence on God. In the aftermath, I witnessed remarkable movements in my life, affirming the power of obedience to divine instruction.

Two weeks after the service, a gentleman approached me and remarked, “Oh PG, I heard you’re getting married.” At that time, he owned a boutique in Ikeja, and if someone had suggested that I would don a suit from his shop for my wedding, I would have dismissed the idea as absurd. To be candid, the suit he provided was priced at 45,000 Naira, while my entire savings for the wedding amounted to 75,000 Naira. Thus, on my wedding day, I found myself stepping out in a designer suit, which may have led some to believe that I was quite affluent, perhaps even speculating that I had misappropriated church funds. However, this was simply a manifestation of the Holy Spirit at work, guiding me to embrace wisdom and directing my path. This experience exemplifies how we have navigated our lives, not through mere tricks or gimmicks, but through a profound understanding of divine guidance as illustrated in the Scriptures.

For many of you listening today, you may have experienced similar moments in your life, yet now you find yourself overly burdened by rationality and intellect, meticulously calculating every decision. In youth, it often feels simpler to act on faith, even when faced with financial obligations like school fees. When someone encourages you to sow a seed, it is easy to dismiss such suggestions as the antics of pastors. However, I can attest to the numerous testimonies that have emerged from this congregation, particularly during the Accelerate Conference three years ago when God prompted me to lead the congregation in sowing seeds as an act of thanksgiving and gratitude. This act was not always tied to specific requests but served as a means to align our hearts with divine intentions. As individuals began to seek God earnestly, they witnessed remarkable breakthroughs in their lives. May this season bring forth similar breakthroughs for you as well.

In this season of your life, I encourage you to embrace the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, which can lead to significant breakthroughs. Walking in the Spirit naturally cultivates wisdom, a defining characteristic of our spiritual family. Just as siblings may share certain physical traits while differing in appearance, those who possess the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit exhibit a profound similarity in the manifestation of divine wisdom. This wisdom operates actively in their lives, reflecting the glory of God. It is essential to recognize that the Holy Spirit is not merely a passive presence; He desires to guide and direct your path, ensuring that you make choices aligned with divine purpose.

The account in Acts chapter 16 illustrates how the Holy Spirit actively guided the Apostle Paul and his companions during their missionary journey. As they traveled through Phrygia and Galatia, they encountered restrictions imposed by the Holy Spirit, who prevented them from preaching in Asia. Their attempts to enter Bithynia were similarly thwarted, demonstrating the protective nature of the Spirit’s guidance. Eventually, Paul received a vision directing him to Macedonia, which they interpreted as a divine call to assist those in need. This narrative underscores the importance of seeking the Holy Spirit’s counsel in all aspects of life, from career decisions to personal investments. The key question arises: how can one discern the voice of the Holy Spirit from their own thoughts? This inquiry is vital for those seeking to deepen their relationship with the Spirit and to follow His leading effectively.

During a recent midweek Q&A session, a participant raised an important question regarding the discernment of the Holy Spirit’s voice. The inquiry referenced Matthew 7:11, which states that if even those with flawed natures can provide good gifts to their children, how much more will our heavenly Father bestow good things upon those who seek Him. It is crucial to grasp that cultivating a relationship with God through the Holy Spirit involves engaging in worship, prayer, and immersing oneself in Scripture. By meditating on God’s Word throughout the day, rather than allowing fear and anxiety to dominate our thoughts, we create a deeper connection with the Holy Spirit. This relationship develops over time, making it increasingly intuitive to recognize His guidance.

The ability to discern the Holy Spirit’s voice is akin to recognizing the familiar voice of a close friend. For instance, one might easily identify a friend’s voice on the phone, even if they attempt to disguise it. This familiarity stems from a relationship built on consistent interaction. The Holy Spirit often communicates through gentle nudges, encouraging us to act kindly or make positive choices, which may initially be dismissed. However, over time, one learns to recognize these promptings as divine guidance. It is essential to practice this discernment in everyday situations rather than waiting for significant life decisions. Ignoring the small, everyday instructions from the Holy Spirit can lead to a disconnect, making it more challenging to seek His counsel during critical moments.

There exists a significant issue that requires attention, as articulated by Paul, who cautioned against frustrating or grieving the Holy Spirit. When an individual consistently neglects or ignores another, it leads to emotional distress and withdrawal. It is possible that someone listening today feels as though the Holy Spirit has distanced Himself from their life. However, it is entirely within your power to invite Him back into your life today. By doing so, you can create an environment that allows the Holy Spirit to operate freely, as God desires to communicate with you. This notion is supported by Matthew 7:11, which emphasizes that earthly fathers, when asked for bread, do not provide stones. If they are capable of doing good for their children, how much more will God be inclined to be present in your life? The key factor here is your attitude; a dismissive or indifferent mindset can hinder your relationship with the divine.

Moreover, it is crucial to understand that material wealth is not a definitive indicator of God’s presence or absence in one’s life.

While anyone can achieve financial success through adherence to natural principles, the true question lies in the character and identity one develops in the absence of the Holy Spirit. The essence of trans-generational wealth is rooted in the blessings of Abraham, which promise not only personal prosperity but also the ability to bless future generations. This covenant, overseen by the Holy Spirit, is vital for sustaining such blessings. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit empowers individuals, providing them with the divine capability to fulfill their responsibilities and achieve their goals.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in shaping and refining an individual’s character, a facet of Christianity that is often overlooked. It is essential to recognize that the true testament to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is not manifested through the volume of one’s speech or the occurrence of miraculous events. Rather, the most significant evidence of God’s work in a person’s life is reflected in their character. The development of character is a profound indicator of spiritual growth, as the Holy Spirit cultivates the fruit of the Spirit within us, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23. These attributes, which include love, joy, patience, kindness, and self-control, are powerful forces that transcend any earthly law, demonstrating the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit provides essential support in managing personal challenges, such as anger, which can jeopardize relationships and professional stability. When individuals experience overwhelming anger, it can lead to destructive behaviors that affect their interactions with others, including outbursts directed at loved ones or colleagues. However, by allowing the Holy Spirit to work within, individuals can gain clarity and wisdom, enabling them to navigate these emotional struggles more effectively. This divine guidance fosters a sense of uncommon sense, leading to healthier responses and improved relationships. Ultimately, the presence of the Holy Spirit not only enhances personal character but also brings about a profound transformation in how one engages with the world, reflecting the glory of Jesus in every aspect of life.
