WHY PRAY

The inquiry into the significance of prayer is a profound one, prompting us to reflect on its necessity in our lives. In the context of our exploration, we turn to the teachings found in James chapter 5, particularly verses 13 to 16, which provide a compelling framework for understanding the role of prayer in addressing various human conditions. The passage begins by addressing those who are suffering or facing afflictions, urging them to engage in prayer as a means of seeking solace and support. The text emphasizes that prayer is not merely a suggestion but a vital response to adversity, highlighting the importance of turning to God in times of distress. Furthermore, it encourages those who are joyful to express their gratitude through praise, illustrating the dual nature of prayer as both a plea for help and a celebration of blessings.

As we delve deeper into the scripture, we encounter the call for communal support through prayer, particularly in the context of illness. The directive to seek the elders of the church for prayer and anointing underscores the significance of community in the healing process. The passage assures us that the prayer offered in faith holds the power to restore not only physical health but also spiritual well-being, as it encompasses forgiveness for sins. The emphasis on accountability and vulnerability in verse 16 further enriches our understanding of prayer, as it invites believers to confess their shortcomings and intercede for one another. This interconnectedness is vital, as it fosters a supportive environment where the “earnest, heartfelt, continued prayer of a righteous man” is said to unleash tremendous power, capable of effecting change in various aspects of life. The dynamic nature of this power suggests that prayer is not a one-dimensional act but a multifaceted tool that can influence diverse situations, reinforcing the idea that through sincere prayer, individuals can tap into a divine strength that transcends ordinary capabilities.

The question of who constitutes a righteous individual is profound and merits careful consideration. This morning, I will not delve deeply into this topic, but I wish to emphasize that my righteousness is not derived from my own efforts; rather, it is a gift that comes from the righteousness of Christ. When I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, I was bestowed with the gift of righteousness, which empowers me in my prayers. This scriptural truth indicates that my prayers hold the same potency as those of Jesus, who is inherently righteous. Without this divine gift, my prayers would lack strength; however, by recognizing that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, I can confidently approach God in prayer. This transformation is rooted in my rebirth, which is not from a corruptible seed but from the incorruptible seed of God’s Word, which endures eternally in my heart. This understanding liberates me from feelings of condemnation and guilt, as I acknowledge that my righteousness is not my own but is found in Jesus. This realization grants me the authority to pray effectively and witness the manifestation of God’s power in my life.

As we explore this topic further, it is essential to recognize that God desires to fill us and invites us to engage with His presence.

The primary purpose of prayer is to establish a foundation for intimacy with God. He created humanity for the express purpose of fostering a relationship with Him, prioritizing this connection above all else. Just as a fish cannot thrive outside of water, I find that I cannot exist outside of His presence. My very being is designed for intimacy with God, and it is within this sacred space that I am meant to dwell. This understanding compels me to seek His presence continually, as it is in this divine communion that I find my true purpose and fulfillment. Are you still with me today? It is crucial to grasp that our existence is intertwined with the desire for closeness to our Creator, and through prayer, we can cultivate this vital relationship.

I inquired whether you are still present. It is essential to recognize that one must embody the qualities of Mary rather than those of Martha, and I will elaborate on this distinction. The narrative found in Luke chapter 10, beginning at verse 38, recounts the visit of Jesus to the home of Mary and Martha. In this passage, we learn that Martha welcomed Jesus into her abode, while her sister Mary chose to sit at His feet, absorbing His teachings. However, Martha became preoccupied with the demands of hospitality, as indicated in verse 40, where she approached Jesus, expressing her frustration that Mary had left her to manage the serving alone. Jesus responded gently, addressing Martha’s worries and distractions, emphasizing that she was troubled by many concerns.

Let us engage in a collective exercise this morning. I invite you to ask your neighbor for their name. Once you have their name, we will read the aforementioned verse together, substituting their name for Martha’s. This exercise is designed to deepen your understanding of the scripture, as it becomes more personal when you insert your own name. For instance, when Jesus addresses Martha, you might hear Him say, “Godman, you are worried and troubled about many things.” The subsequent verse highlights that only one thing is truly necessary, and Mary has chosen that essential aspect, which is to cultivate a close relationship with God. In contrast, many individuals today mirror Martha’s behavior, preoccupied with logistical concerns such as meal preparations and other mundane tasks, rather than embracing the opportunity for spiritual intimacy.

The activities that Mary engaged in while conversing with Jesus highlight a profound spiritual connection, as she absorbed revelations that were shaping her destiny. In contrast, Martha was preoccupied with various tasks, illustrating the dichotomy between action and contemplation. This scenario underscores the fundamental truth that human beings are inherently designed for connection, with the primary relationship being that with God. The second layer of connection involves interactions with other individuals and the surrounding world. Prayer serves as a vital conduit for fostering intimacy with God, a concept that is essential for everyone to grasp. The essence of humanity is rooted in the need for connection, both with the divine and with fellow beings.

To substantiate this notion, one can refer to Genesis chapter 2, particularly verse 7, which describes God’s creation of man from the dust of the earth. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes evident that the first interaction of humanity was with God, establishing a foundational relationship that transcends all others. The intimacy and knowledge of God are paramount, as prayer is the primary means through which this relationship is nurtured. When God breathed life into Adam, the first human being had no knowledge apart from what was imparted by God. Thus, the initial environment and the first entity Adam encountered were divine in nature. By verse 15, God assigns Adam the responsibility of tending to the Garden of Eden, marking the beginning of his purpose and job description in the world.

In the beginning, God established a purpose for humanity, assigning specific tasks to Adam. It was only in verse 18 that God recognized the inherent need for companionship, declaring that it was not good for man to be alone. Having experienced God’s presence and understanding His intentions, Adam was ready to receive a suitable helper. This moment marked the beginning of human relationships, emphasizing the importance of connection with others. In contemporary society, many individuals approach life with a mindset of relentless striving, often referring to their daily endeavors as “hustling.” However, this term can imply a sense of chaos and aimlessness, which diverges from the divine guidance that God intends for His followers.

The notion of hustling, while popular and seemingly acceptable in modern vernacular, does not align with the identity of a child of God. As believers, we are part of a covenant that promises direction and favor, much like the covenant God established with Abraham. Abraham’s journey was characterized by obedience to divine instruction rather than frantic efforts to achieve success. It is essential to recognize that our language and mindset should reflect our identity as God’s children, rather than conforming to societal norms that may dilute our understanding of divine purpose. By embracing our role as heirs of the covenant, we can navigate life with assurance, knowing that we are guided by God’s wisdom rather than merely hustling through our days.

In contemporary society, it is common for individuals to distance themselves from the divine presence of God, which should be the foremost pursuit in their lives. Instead, many find themselves preoccupied with the demands of work or the distractions of interpersonal relationships. This shift in focus leads to a neglect of the essential connection with God, who is the ultimate source of all existence. Before Adam engaged in labor or formed relationships with others, he had a profound awareness of God. His initial experience was one of enjoying the divine presence and receiving guidance directly from God, who instructed him on his purpose. This raises a critical question about the nature of our primary connection in life and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and nurturing that bond.

Prayer serves as a vital means of reconnecting with this primary relationship, fostering an ongoing awareness of God’s presence in our lives. It is through prayer that we maintain our connection with the divine, allowing us to feel assured of God’s companionship. The example set by Jesus during His earthly ministry underscores this principle. In Mark 1:35, it is noted that Jesus rose early in the morning to seek solitude for prayer, demonstrating His understanding of the necessity of this practice. Despite His divine nature, Jesus recognized the importance of engaging in prayer to access God’s power while on Earth, where the dynamics differ from those in heaven. His actions illustrate that even the Son of God adhered to the protocol of prayer, highlighting its significance for all believers.

In Mark chapter 1, verse 36, we observe Simon and his companions actively searching for Jesus. By verse 37, upon finding Him, they express their concern, stating, “All men seek thee.” This passage highlights a profound truth for believers: cultivating a relationship with God through prayer fosters a deep intimacy with Him. When one prioritizes seeking God’s presence, it naturally draws others to them, eliminating the need for relentless pursuit of human validation. The example of Jesus illustrates that while He dedicated time to prayer, people were drawn to Him, as evidenced by His disciples’ report that everyone was looking for Him.

In contemporary times, the dynamic appears reversed; it seems that God is searching for us while we chase after various distractions. It is crucial for individuals to internalize the understanding that God desires us to seek Him, which is why He established the principle of prayer. Attempting to bypass this principle will not yield the expected flow of divine power or enhance one’s intimacy with God. Just as relationships with others require communication to flourish, so too does our relationship with God necessitate consistent engagement through prayer and worship. Without this commitment, the relationship may stagnate or deteriorate, much like a friendship where one party is always reaching out while the other remains silent.

In this context, the phrase “one chance” is often used to signify a situation where someone is being deceived or misled. It serves as a cautionary term, particularly for those unfamiliar with its implications. This concept can be likened to the dynamics of our relationship with God, where it may appear that God is the only one earnestly seeking us, while we remain indifferent to His presence. In moments of turmoil, such as when we face storms in our lives, these challenges may serve as divine nudges, prompting us to redirect our focus towards God. The psalmist expresses this sentiment beautifully, stating, “I will look up to the hills from whence comes my help; my help comes from the Lord.” Unfortunately, some individuals, even in their dire need, overlook divine assistance and instead seek help from others, often leading to disappointment and rejection. It is crucial to remember that true solace and support come from God, as the promise of joy follows the trials we endure.

Understanding the importance of prayer is vital in nurturing our connection with God, as He created us for this very purpose. Prayer serves as the primary means through which we engage with the divine, allowing us to acknowledge His presence in our lives. Jesus exemplified the significance of prayer throughout His ministry, dedicating time to communicate with the Father. This Wednesday, we will delve into the various prayers of Jesus, exploring their depth and significance, which may inspire us to adopt a similar focus in our own prayer lives. It is essential to recognize that prayer is not a means of assisting God; rather, it is a transformative practice that benefits us, enhancing our sensitivity to His divine presence and fostering a deeper relationship with Him.

It is essential to recognize that while water itself remains unaffected, it is the fish that require the water for survival. This analogy serves to illustrate that prayer does not serve to alter God; rather, it is a means through which we, as individuals, can experience transformation. The act of praying does not change the divine nature of God but instead facilitates a change within ourselves. As we engage in prayer, we begin to perceive our circumstances differently, and it is within the presence of God that we find true joy and fulfillment. The Bible emphasizes that in His presence, there is an abundance of joy, and at His right hand, there are eternal pleasures. When we immerse ourselves in this divine presence, our perspectives shift, allowing God to initiate movement in our lives.

Furthermore, the concept of intimacy with God is paramount in understanding the purpose of prayer. In John chapter 4, the interaction between Jesus and the woman at the well exemplifies this notion. Jesus initiated a dialogue by asking for water, which led to a deeper discussion about spiritual sustenance. The woman, caught in a theological debate regarding the proper place of worship, was gently redirected by Jesus to recognize that true worship transcends physical locations and is rooted in spirit and truth. This conversation highlights the necessity of delving deeper into our spiritual experiences. Many individuals remain superficial in their relationship with God due to their reluctance to explore the depths of faith. It is crucial to understand that God invites us to deepen our connection with Him, and through prayer, we gain the ability to draw from His infinite resources.

The essence of spiritual fulfillment lies in the ability to draw deeply from the divine source. One cannot expect to receive the profound blessings of living water by merely skimming the surface; true nourishment is found in the depths of one’s being. The reference to “out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” emphasizes the importance of inner depth rather than superficial engagement. A fleeting prayer of just a few minutes will not suffice if one desires to access the richness of God’s gifts. It is essential to cultivate a deeper relationship with the divine, moving beyond surface-level interactions to truly connect with the essence of God.

To achieve genuine intimacy, whether in a marital relationship or in one’s spiritual life, one must delve deeper than mere pleasantries. Shallow conversations and superficial exchanges can lead to a sense of disconnection, even in the closest of relationships. Just as a meaningful marriage requires probing and understanding to uncover the true feelings of one’s partner, so too does one’s relationship with God demand a commitment to deeper engagement. It is crucial to move beyond casual greetings and simplistic prayers, recognizing that God desires a more profound connection. For those who have not yet experienced the fullness of the Holy Spirit, this is the time to seek that deeper filling, enabling a more vital and enriching communion with the divine.

It is an opportune moment to engage in heartfelt worship, to raise your hands in reverence, whether you find yourself alone in a room or driving in your car. This personal act of devotion allows for a profound connection with Jesus, as you spend several minutes expressing your gratitude and acknowledging His unwavering faithfulness. In moments of trial, when circumstances appear dire, it is essential to affirm your belief in His reliability, declaring that you have experienced His power and trust in His goodness despite the challenges you face. The call to prayer is not merely a suggestion; it is a directive to seek divine intervention rather than resorting to complaints or social media distractions.

In times of affliction, the emphasis should be on prayer as a means of addressing temptations and overcoming negative emotions. Engaging in prayer can be a transformative experience, enabling individuals to release burdens and find solace. Research has indicated that those who actively participate in worship and seek God’s presence tend to recover from feelings of depression more swiftly than those who isolate themselves. This highlights the importance of cultivating a connection with the divine, as it can lead to the alleviation of emotional distress and the lifting of heavy burdens from one’s mind. Thus, it is crucial to recognize the power of prayer and worship in fostering emotional resilience and spiritual depth.

I have developed a clear perception of God, which enables me to navigate my circumstances more effectively. Rather than succumbing to feelings of being overwhelmed, I find myself in a position to confront and manage the challenges I face. This transformation occurs when I actively cultivate a sense of His presence in my life. In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22, verse 40, Jesus instructs His disciples to pray in order to avoid falling into temptation. Prayer serves as the most effective preparation for the trials that inevitably arise. While temptations are a certainty, being grounded in prayer equips one to handle them. If one frequently finds themselves struggling, it may indicate a lack of a robust prayer life.

To effectively confront temptation, it is essential to dedicate more time to prayer. When faced with challenges, a well-established prayer life provides the insight needed to navigate them. Recently, I shared an experience with some fellow pastors that illustrates this point. Upon meeting an individual, I immediately sensed a disturbance in my spirit, alerting me to the potential for deceit. As the conversation unfolded, the Holy Spirit revealed specific details about the individual’s intentions, allowing me to recognize the fraudulent nature of his claims. I was able to take swift action by informing my assistant to investigate further, which confirmed my suspicions. This ability to discern is not solely a result of my pastoral role; rather, it stems from the time I invest in seeking His presence. Many within our community have shared similar experiences, underscoring the importance of a committed prayer life.

I recall a conversation with my brother in which he recounted an experience he had while traveling to Abuja for a contract opportunity. He mentioned that upon his arrival at the office building, he felt a strong conviction in his spirit, a result of his prior prayers regarding the situation. He sensed that the first individual to enter the room would secure the contract, yet he was not the first to arrive. As he observed others casually reading newspapers and waiting, he set aside distractions and focused intently on the door. When the door finally opened, he sprang forward, and before anyone could establish who had arrived first, he was invited in. Remarkably, he ended up securing the contract, although he speculated that perhaps the decision-maker was only present for a brief period that day.

This incident highlights the importance of spiritual awareness and readiness. While some individuals, possibly even fellow Christians, may have remained passive, believing there was no urgency in the situation, my brother’s sensitivity to the spiritual realm allowed him to seize the opportunity. Many fail to recognize the interconnectedness of their destinies, often due to a lack of spiritual engagement and communication with God. This connection is vital, as it enables one to hear divine guidance and respond accordingly. Prayer serves as a powerful tool for managing negative emotions and resisting temptation, as emphasized in Philippians 4:6, which encourages believers to remain free from anxiety and to focus on prayer and thanksgiving, thereby presenting their requests to God.

Prayer and gratitude serve as powerful tools for managing anxiety, agitation, and a range of negative emotions, including guilt. In moments of distress, I find solace in prayer, where I feel reassured by God’s unwavering presence and love. Despite my shortcomings and moments of foolishness, the divine message remains clear: I am still cherished and supported. This transformative experience is not achieved through idle conversations over drinks, lamenting about life’s uncertainties, but rather through sincere engagement in prayer and worship. It is through this practice that one can truly connect with the divine and find peace amidst turmoil.

Moreover, prayer empowers individuals to envision and shape their future.

As stated in the book of Jeremiah, God promises to reveal profound and mighty truths that remain unknown to us. Unfortunately, many individuals today are turning away from prayer and instead seeking guidance from prophets, which can lead to a reliance on external sources rather than fostering a personal relationship with God. While the prophetic gift is indeed valuable and can be beneficial, it should not overshadow the essential process of discipleship. Developing a direct line of communication with God is crucial; relying solely on others for spiritual direction can hinder personal growth. It is imperative to cultivate one’s own ability to discern divine messages, ensuring that one does not become ensnared in practices that stray from the true essence of faith.

A true believer should never reach a stage where decision-making is solely dependent on consulting a prophet, as this indicates a lack of direct communication with God. If one finds themselves unable to engage with God without intermediary assistance, it raises questions about their relationship with the divine. A genuine child of God has the privilege of conversing with their Heavenly Father directly, establishing a personal connection that is fundamental to their faith. While it is acceptable to seek guidance from spiritual mentors or leaders—akin to uncles who may provide counsel based on their experience with the Father—this should not replace the primary relationship between the believer and God. The role of prophetic gifts is to offer insights and guidance that enhance one’s understanding of God’s will, not to serve as a barrier to direct communication.

Moreover, relying excessively on a prophet can lead to a distorted relationship with God, where the prophet inadvertently becomes a substitute for divine authority. It is essential to recognize that while prophetic insights can be beneficial, they should not overshadow the believer’s ability to hear from God directly. In a community that values direct communication with God, believers are encouraged to engage in prayer and seek counsel from pastors and spiritual leaders without making them the primary source of divine revelation. Personal experiences, such as receiving a prophetic word about employment, illustrate the power of faith and prayer, but they should always be viewed as affirmations of God’s promises rather than the sole means of understanding His will. Ultimately, the believer’s relationship with God should be characterized by direct dialogue and personal engagement, fostering a deeper spiritual connection.

This individual is a medical doctor who has been actively seeking employment, a situation that raises questions about the typical job search process for someone in his profession. Despite the uncertainties surrounding his job hunt, he has maintained a strong faith, engaging in prayer and trusting in divine guidance. He has received a sense of assurance from God, which has been affirmed through prophetic insight, and this has led to positive outcomes in his search. It is important to note that the narrative surrounding his situation should not be influenced by unfounded claims, such as the notion that familial curses are hindering his job prospects. Such beliefs can divert focus from constructive actions, such as job searching, and instead lead to misguided prayers against family members. It is crucial to recognize that prayer should serve as a means of aligning oneself with God’s purpose, allowing for clarity and direction in one’s endeavors.
